Welcome to National Arbor Day!

Most appropriate given the discussions about trees in the Syracuse Development thread...

Many holidays commemorate some event from the past, but National Arbor Day is about investing in the future. It focuses on the care and preservation of existing trees, as well as on the planting of new ones. Appropriately, it takes place during a time of the year when it is favorable to plant trees in most parts of the United States. Although National Arbor Day takes place on the last Friday of April, some states observe Arbor Day on other days. Many other countries also celebrate Arbor Day—or a similar holiday—on other days.

The holiday's name comes from the Latin word arbor, which means tree. In 1594, the mayor of the Spanish village of Mondoñedo organized a tree-planting festival—the first festival of its kind. Another Spanish village, Villanueva de la Sierra, held the first Arbor Day in 1805.

Syracuse Football Mock Draft 2019: Final Mock Draft, SU 1st round history (itlh; Esden Jr)

Here’s the latest buzz with 2019 mock drafts. Plus here’s the recent history of Syracuse football players going in the 1st round.

Right off the bat, I’ve got some bad news, no Syracuse football player is expected to be taken in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

That would be the sixth straight year that a former member of the Orange has NOT heard his name called in primetime.

In fact, since 2003 there have only been two Syracuse football players taken in the opening round:

Justin Pugh, 19th overall, 2013 NFL Draft.

Chandler Jones, 21st overall, 2012 NFL Draft.

Projecting forward for a second, there does appear to be some optimism that drought will end sooner rather than later over the next couple of years with talented current Syracuse players like:

Andre Cisco

Led all of college football in interceptions in 2018 (seven interceptions), his first year in Orange. If Cisco accomplishes this feat, he’d be the first defensive back at Syracuse to be taken in the first round since Will Allen back in the 2001 draft (he went 22nd overall to the New York Giants).

Tommy DeVito

Quarterbacks always have a chance to be taken in the first round. If Tommy lives up to the hype he could be the first Syracuse quarterback selected in the first round since Donovan McNabb went second overall back to the Philadelphia Eagles in the 1999 NFL Draft.

Alton Robinson

Robinson had 10 sacks for the Orange in 2018 and will look to build upon that in 2019 his final season with Syracuse. We don’t have to go back far to find the last pass rusher to be taken in the first that was the aforementioned Chandler Jones in 2012 to the New England Patriots.

Kendall Coleman

Speaking of double-digit sack seasons, Kendall also had one of those last year with 10. Prior to Chandler being taken in the first round, the last edge rusher to come off the board on the opening night was future Hall of Famer Dwight Freeney back in 2001 to the Indianapolis Colts (11th overall).

The Latest: Tim McGraw on tap for 2nd night of NFL draft :: WRALSportsFan.com (wralsportsfan.com)

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell estimates 200,000 turned out for the first night of the NFL draft in Nashville on a rainy night, and Music City has an even bigger show ready in the wings.

Country star Tim McGraw will perform a free concert Friday night on the draft stage once the third round concludes along with fireworks.

Not even rain, at times heavy enough to drip through the massive tent where the media worked, affected all the fans that stuck around for the draft picks, music and fireworks of the first round.

Luckily for Friday, only partly sunny skies are expected.

Another first round of the NFL draft is in the books, and the Southeastern Conference has bragging rights yet again.

The SEC led all conferences with nine players drafted followed by eight from the Atlantic Coast Conference and seven from the Big Ten. National champ Clemson matched Alabama and Mississippi State with three players apiece selected.

Defense had the edge as teams took 18 defenders compared to 14 offensive players, and 19 were underclassmen with three players who graduated early but went to the NFL with eligibility still remaining.

Only one player came from outside the Football Bowl Subdivision. Houston took offensive tackle Tytus Howard from Alabama State from the FCS.

The NFL draft's green room still had five prospects still on hand when the first round ended.

A total of 22 prospects came to Nashville for the draft once Kyler Murray got to town, and they went through a variety of events and walked the red carpet before the first round Thursday night.

We ate 50 different foods at Golden Corral, and these are the best (and worst) (PS; Pucci & Miller)

It's Swing Time at the Golden Corral in Syracuse. It's 3:45 p.m., and we have 15 minutes before lunch eases into dinner. (And we have 15 minutes before the price jumps from $10.49 to $16.49.)

That's just enough time to grab a burger from the grill. And by the time we wolf that down, we can head back and order a sirloin steak from that same grill.

We are here working hard, trying as much of the food that we can at the popular new all-you-can-eat buffet just off Erie Boulevard East in Syracuse.

Our goal is to give you a guide of what to consume when you decide to brave the long line that forms outside daily.

Golden Corral told us the average patron spends around 45 minutes in the restaurant. We spent just over two hours.

Welcome to Golden Corral!

Before we grabbed our first of many plates at the Corral, we checked with the corporate office in North Carolina for the most popular of the 150 items offered.

They are (in no particular order):

Fried chicken
Sirloin steak
Burger bar
Butterfly shrimp
Fried fish
Macaroni & cheese
Mashed potatoes
Carrot cake
Cotton candy
Chocolate fountain

We ended up trying 50 items--just about every entree and side dish available when we visited. We avoided the salad bar altogether because, really, what fun is that?

Here's what we got:

34c_goldencorral3.jpeg

We started with the build-your-own burger bar because we only had a few minutes before it would magically transform into the steak bar.

One of us is lactose-intolerant (Charlie) and asked for a burger sans cheese. So Robert, the guy grilling all the beef, grabbed a fresh (not frozen) patty, sprinkled on some seasoning and tossed it on the heat. He said to grab some food and come back in about five minutes.

That's exactly what we did. When we returned, the burger was done. Well done.

The patty was thick and flavorful, if a bit too loosely-packed and crumbly. A slice of melted cheese probably would've helped keep it together.

We topped it with cooked mushrooms, peppers and onions. The burgers are served on warm yeast rolls (also available on their own at a different buffet station), which taste good, but aren't the most structurally-sound.

The thick fries were crispy on the outside and inside. We suggest you wait until a fresh batch arrives, because they cool down quickly.

The burger bar debuted earlier this year, and for the most part, it's a winner.

Burger: Keeper
Fries: Only if hot
