Welcome to National Coconut Cream Pie Day!

The coconut is not a nut. In fact, it isn’t a fruit either. It is a seed!

Coconut oils accelerate the metabolism. Of course, if you put them in pie you may not notice the effect.

The sailors aboard Vasco de Gama’s ships gave the coconut its name. They called it “Coco”, named after a grimacing face or hobgoblin.

The water from the coconut has traditionally been used when commercial IV solutions of plasma have not been available.

Coconut oils also contain four growth hormones, called cytokinins, and three sets of chromosomes – or triploids – that help the development of many organisms.

Syracuse Football: Experts have SU ranked in top-20 of preseason poll (itlh.com; Edsen Jr)

Syracuse football is garnering some respect across college football after a historic 2018. How much love are they getting? Here are the details.

The Syracuse football season is still several months away but a wide variety of media outlets have already made their feelings known with their annual (sometimes monthly) preseason college football polls.

The folks over at FanSided (Cody Williams) moved Syracuse up to No. 17 on their big board (previously SU was ranked 22nd), here were some of the highlights of their argument:

Losing Eric Dungey hurts them, but they believe Tommy DeVito will step up to the plate “and has the pedigree to develop into a high-level starting quarterback in college football.”
On top of that, the Orange return eight starters from their 2018 defense and have high hopes on that side of the ball that their experience can carry them.

Babers and the Orange should continue to be a threat in the ACC.

But FanSided isn’t the only site offering some delicious preseason polls, here are some other prominent ones and where they have Syracuse ranked:

Syracuse Football: Shyheim Cullen skipping out on SU is right move (itlh; Mlodzinski)

Syracuse football will be down another LB this season with Shyheim Cullen skipping town. Here’s what that means for his future.

Syracuse football will be replacing their linebacking corps for the third straight year. One of the names who was supposed to step up to the plate is now stepping away from the program.

Former Syracuse linebacker Shyheim Cullen has decided not to return to the Orange for his final year of eligibility, per his stepfather, John Brewer via Stephen Bailey of Syracuse.com.

Cullen, who redshirted during the 2015 season, saw an increase of playing time last season, after only playing in 12 total games from 2016 to 2017. Last year alone, Cullen suited up for 10 games, and according to sportsreference.com, registered 31 total tackles and a sack.

While these numbers may not seem overly impressive, he did this behind two superb seniors, in Ryan Guthrie and Kielan Whitner.

While Cullen’s college career may be over, he still looks to embark on a professional football journey. Cullen plans on entering the NFL’s supplemental draft, which is open to any player who becomes ineligible for college football after the deadline to enter the NFL Draft.

Syracuse Football Season Ticket Sales Soar Ahead of 2019 Season (ticketnews.com; Perreault)

Syracuse Football is seeing a huge boost in sales before the season is even underway, selling over 6,000 new season tickets.

John Wildhack, Syracuse athletic director, announced on Monday that the school had sold out of single-game tickets for the game against Clemson this season, Syrcause.com reports. He noted that the team’s success last season likely has to do with the surge of new season ticket holders, since last year, the team only sold 2,300 new season tickets.

“The best we’ve ever had is a little over 8,000 in 1998,” Wildhack said. “We’re thrilled and we’re thankful for the support of our fans, for their response to last year’s great season. … We’re sitting here in May. The number of 6,000 this early is tremendous.”

He added that if fans want to see Syracuse take on Clemson and are interested in a three-game plan, “you’re better served to act soon,” as fewer than 4,500 season tickets are available, including less than 300 in the first level.

Last season, the team went 10-3, which helped Syracuse garner the most wins since 2001, and they went on to win the Camping World Bowl. The 2019 season begins on August 31 where they’re set to play Liberty. Throughout the season, they’ll take on Maryland, Clemson, Western Michigan, Holy Cross, North Carolina State, Pittsburgh, Florida State, Boston College, Duke, Louisville, and Wake Forest.

Clemson Tigers — 2019 Syracuse Football preview - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

for gbo

As we countdown to kickoff in August, we’re going to be doing a team-by-team preview each week over the summer. SU will begin its ACC portion of the 2019 season when it hosts Clemson on Sept. 14.

SWINNEY SIGNS RICHEST COLLEGE COACH CONTRACT

Last year, Clemson became the first team since the 1800s to finish a season a perfect 15-0.

You have to dig pretty far back in the record books to find a comparison, with the 1897 Penn and 1984 Yale teams as the only FBS-level teams to accomplish that achievement.

The Tigers handsomely rewarded head coach Dabo Swinney for his success, inking him to 10-year, $92 million deal in April that runs through 2028, making him the highest paid coach in college football.

There are two unique clauses to his contract.

First, like many contracts, if Swinney decides to leave for another school, there will be a steep buyout. But the buyout increases if Swinney takes the head coaching position at Alabama, where he was a walk-on wide receiver and assistant coach in the 1990s.

If he leaves in 2019 or 2020, the buyout of going to Alabama is $6 million ($4 million for any other school). Both numbers decrease over time, but even in the tail end of the contract in 2027, the buyout would be $1 million for any school and $1.5 million for Alabama.

The second unique kicker to the contract involves Swinney continuing to be one of the highest paid college coaches.

If Swinney guides Clemson to the college football semifinal, the contract requires him to be one of college football’s top three paid head coac
hes the following year. If Clemson doesn’t match the money, he can leave without needing a buyout.

Doughty's Dump (Tuesday, May 7): Ranking FBS Jobs, Trump Confusion, Syracuse (herosports.com; Doughty)

SORRY, LAS CRUCES

Athlon Sports ranked all 130 FBS head-coaching jobs "based on the attractiveness of the position from a coaching perspective." They considered "tradition, facilities, location, money, ability to recruit talent," and simply asked themselves: "Where would we want to coach?"

They would not want to coach at New Mexico State, which sits in one of the most unique areas of the country (I said unique, not best) and ranks dead last among the 130 jobs.

In this impossibly difficult task, I think, among other things: USC and Illinois are too high, Notre Dame and South Carolina are too low.

Also: Ralph Russo of the Associated Press ranked first-year coaches by those most likely to succeed.

MORE LOVE FOR SYRACUSE?

Connor O'Gara from Saturday Down South made a list of teams that aren't getting enough love in the very-early top 25 rankings for the 2019 college football season. Among them: Syracuse, who is also being oddly vague in discussing Dino Babers' new contract extension. The Orange lost quarterback Eric Dungey but are loaded at the skill positions and have a strong defensive line.

How to Say Goodbye – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Edelstein)

Over the years, players and coaches come and go. Rarely is it that things stay the same.

Even this past year with Syracuse basketball returning all five starters, it was a completely different team. Elijah Hughes became eligible to play. Buddy Boeheim joined the team and left an impression. Jalen Carey came off the bench as well.

But as we get caught up in the day to day transactions, one thing we don’t think much about is how to say goodbye. Usually the day comes where a player or coach leaves, we talk about it for a moment, and then we move on.

While fans might cheer for the same team year after year and we sports staff may cover teams through the seasons, really, the team is constantly changing. As fans cheer for the Orange, they are really shouting praise for so many different people who have worn the color over time. It comes to represent all of them together. Forever Orange.

It’s part of the deal. To have the great moments—whether it be a great player for one season, two seasons, three or four or whether it is a great coach who then decides to go to another school as Mike Hopkins did—those moments come at the price of having to say goodbye at some point. And maybe we like to ignore it in the moment or just get carried away with the present, but, eventually, a player or a coach moves on from Syracuse.

Eric Dungey was sent off this year at the highest of highs. He had a true origin story four years ago when he took the field in the first quarter of his first college game. Then fans chanted his name as he walked off the Carrier Dome turf for the last time as a four-year starter.

Tyus Battle said “so long” in a letter and gave fans final high fives as he walked off the court.

The same goes for us writers here at The Fizz. Just like the players, we have four years to give it our all, to play hard and continue to improve. We hope to build a fan base here at Orange Fizz through our writing, tweets, FizzCasts and Fizz Radio.

And so we do. But it’s also part of our deal that we will move on, hoping to be “drafted” to work professionally as well.

So, players say their thanks as they move on, and here is my moment to be nostalgic, too. I try to make my posts about the games and the players, not about me (though they sometimes may include my blogging thoughts and opinions put out there for consideration, and I’ve definitely seen and heard your Syracuse sports opinions over time as well). But I would be remiss if I did not take a moment to thank you as well as I move on, just as the Syracuse figures we write about do.

ACCN News - 5/8/19 (RX; HM)

ACCN News - 5/8/19

ACC Commissioner John Swofford met with reporters this Monday (it's an annual meeting), and of course there were questions about the upcoming ACC Network channel. Here are some useful highlights:

Disney, the parent company of ESPN, has yet to reach a deal for the ACC Network with Comcast, Charter/Spectrum, Dish Network or AT&T U-verse. It’s expected that several of those deals could drag out until around the launch date (August 22nd, 2019). Swofford feels that the ACC Network has leverage in the marketplace thanks to partnering with ESPN - "Mickey Mouse carries a lot of weight,” he said. We recently reported on rumors that Charter intends to carry the ACCN [LINK], and indeed Swofford did mention ongoing negotiations with Charter and AT&T, but didn’t provide many details.

Swofford also said the network is still developing original programming ideas to complement the live games, and that events like the scholar-athlete luncheon and the ACC Legends event could be broadcast on the network. The re-airing of classic games will also be part of the programming.

Swofford also envisions more spring football exposure on the ACCN next spring. When asked if they wanted to air more spring football, he replied "The simple answer is yes". This year, roughly half of ACC teams televised their spring game (8 did, 6 did not). The ACC policy is to let member schools decide whether or not to televise their spring games, and there are no plans to change that - officially. But while schools won’t be contractually obligated to put their spring games on the network, the conference wants to get more of those games on the air - and so does ESPN.

The Y'ALL factor (RX; HM)

Yes, it's true... most of the country does NOT say "Y'all" for the plural form of you - that's a Southern thing. So why am I addressing it on an ACC football blog? Because it's not totally irrelevant.

National Champions.

In the last couple of decades, we can break down championships into teams where they say Y'all and teams where they don't:

Y'all Teams: 17
You Guys Teams: 3

* for a breakdown by year, see below.

In other words, Southern teams have won 85% of the championships in the last two decades. That's why many Southern fans only want Southern teams added to the ACC - they feel that's where football matters most, and therefore, those are the teams they think are most likely to help ACC football. They may have a point - at least when it comes to national championships. Southern culture includes football culture.

Speaking of culture...

Conference Realignment misfits.

Some people like to point out that there is a bit of a North/South strain within the ACC - which, before 2004, was strictly a Southern conference. I don't think there's nearly as much strain as people think, and I'd counter it by pointing out other factors which make sense of the newest additions, but... strictly from a Northern/Southern point of view, there are some teams which seem out of place after the last round of conference realignment. However, that's true of every Power 5 conference except the Pac-12, as shown here:

Conf Mainly Misfits
ACC Y'all BC, Syracuse, Pitt, Notre Dame
B1G You Guys Maryland
SEC Y'all Missouri
XII Y'all Kansas, KSU, ISU

A Look at Virginia Tech's 2019 Roster (RX; HM)

So I thought I'd take some time this off-season to evaluate rosters of other ACC teams, starting with the one I know best. Here's a list of the blue-chip players currently on the roster at Virginia Tech:

PLAYER'S NAME POS. CLASS
Jaden Payoute ATH Fr.
Tayvion Robinson ATH Fr.
Chamarri Conner S So.
Devon Hunter DB R-So.
J.R. Walker DB Fr.
Jeremy Webb DB R-Jr.
Nathan Proctor DL R-So.
TyJuan Garbutt DL R-So.
Alan Tisdale OLB R-Fr.
Dax Hollifield ILB So.
Dylan Rivers LB Jr.
Bryan Hudson OL Fr.
Doug Nester OL Fr.
Braxton Burmeister QB 2020*
Hendon Hooker QB R-So.
Quincy Patterson II QB R-Fr.
Keyshawn King RB Fr.
James Mitchell TE So.
Jacoby Pinckney WR Fr.
Tre Turner WR So.

There's a total here of 20 blue-chip players (all of them 4-stars). It's probably worth noting, too, that 7 of these 20 are true freshmen, 2 more are redshirt freshmen, and another was at Oregon* last season - meaning that half of these 4-stars weren't even on the roster when the Hokies went 6-7 in 2018.
