Welcome to "The Stars and Stripes Forever" Day!

Today's holiday takes place on the anniversary of the first public performance of "The Stars and Stripes Forever," and is thus dedicated to the march. The march was first performed on May 14, 1897, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on the occasion of the unveiling of a statue of George Washington. President William McKinley was even in attendance.

John Philip Sousa had been the director of the United States Marine Band from 1880 to 1892. The most popular musical star of his era, Sousa was known as the "March King" by the 1890s, and started his own band and toured the country after leaving the Marine band. But at this time, he had yet to write what would become his most well-known piece.

Preview 2019: Syracuse. 5 Things You Need To Know, Season Prediction (CFN; Fiutak)

2018 Record: 10-3 overall, 6-2 in ACC
Head Coach: Dino Babers, 4th year, 18-19

5. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE SYRACUSE OFFENSE
– Now there’s the offense we’ve all been waiting for. The first part of the Dino Babers era showed off plenty of pyrotechnics for the passing game, but there wasn’t any consistency, and the points just weren’t there like they were supposed to be. Last year’s attack averaged 40 points and 465 yards per game with a good balance and a whole lot of explosion. There’s turnover with five starters gone, but it’ll still be a dangerous attack as long as …

– The Orange have to get past the Eric Dungey era. The former quarterback was the heart-and-soul type who ran well put up big numbers, and took a beating as he closed out with an All-ACC final season. But Tommy DeVito just might be better … at least that’s according to the hype. He has to be more accurate, but he’s got the huge arm and the passing skills to make the passing game shine, especially because …

Depth Separates SU Football From Others – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Shults)

Over Dino Babers’ tenure at Syracuse, he’s flipped the trajectory of the program. Gone are the days of 4-8 seasons. Now, it’s not crazy for SU fans to imagine consistent 10 win seasons. Babers’ up-tempo offense has played a huge role in the turnaround. So has a much improved offensive line and defense. But another reason why the Orange are hanging with the top teams in the ACC is the depth that has accumulated in the past couple of seasons.

When Babers arrived to Syracuse, he was dealing with a depleted roster that needed a full revamping. Now his back-ups have quality back-ups. Last year SU had to replace its two star linebackers, Paris Bennett and Zaire Franklin, that served as anchors to the defense. Ryan Guthrie and Kielan Whitner stepped up and each had at least 100 tackles. This season, the pressure’s on Andrew Armstrong and Lakiem Williams. Armstrong had some bright moments a year ago, including a game sealing interception against NC State. Meanwhile Williams didn’t play much last season, but neither had Guthrie and Whitner before last season. And if Williams or Armstrong struggle, Babers has a couple talented freshman waiting to hear their names called.

On the offensive line, Babers has been stocking up talent for a couple of years in preparation of graduations this past year. Next year, SU will have three new starters, including a redshirt freshman left tackle. After a year in the program Carlos Vettorello is tasked with protecting Tommy DeVito’s blind side. In the past two recruiting cycles, Babers signed seven offensive lineman. If there’s any position group that a coach needs to sign back-ups to fill in for injuries, it’s the offensive line.

Syracuse Football: Steve Ishmael still chasing his NFL dream with Colts (itlh; Esden Jr)

Former Syracuse football wideout Steve Ishmael is still chasing his NFL dream. Here’s how he can make the final 53 man roster and stay there.

All the talk around the town has been about the latest batch of Syracuse football players trying to make it in the NFL. But there are still some older Orange players chasing that dream like Steve Ishmael.

Ishmael is still only 23 years old and he’s hoping to make the final 53 man roster this time around with the Indianapolis Colts.

Last year Ishmael wasn’t selected in the 2018 NFL Draft but quickly signed on with the Colts a few hours later. While he impressed in spurts, it wasn’t enough to make the roster.

Syracuse Football: Shamarko Thomas is the unorthodox NFL safety (itlh; Esden Jr)

Former Syracuse football player Shamarko Thomas is keeping his NFL dreams alive. Despite his lack of size, Thomas continues to make his impact known.

Former Syracuse football star Shamarko Thomas is still in the NFL after seven years. If you just look at his size (5-foot-9, 205 pounds) you’d be surprised he’s in the league at all.

When you look around the league at the starting safeties they’re simply built differently:

Remember the beerball? It was once the life of every party (PS; Cazentre)

If you remember any part of the period from the late-1970s to the mid-1990s, you may remember the beerball. (Although if you drank from a beerball, it is possible you don’t remember it).

The beerball was a hard plastic container, perfectly round, that held a little more than 5 gallons of draft beer (more than two cases of 12-ounce cans or bottles). Attach a tap, give it a few pumps, and wait for the foam to blow off. Then have a ball.

Beerballs seemed to be everywhere a party was happening.

“I remember a lot of guys in the early ‘80’s always having a tap for them in their car trunks,” said David Rivers, who grew up in Liverpool, where he worked and sold beerballs at the Galeville Grocery run by his father, Bernie. “If you were going to a party, instead of 2 cases of beer we’d grab a beerball … And someone always had a tap.”
