Miami football 2019 strength of schedule huge discrepancy overall and Non-conference (caneswarning.com; Rubenstein)
In recent rankings by a pair of media outlets, there is a huge discrepancy between the Miami football program’s 2019 overall strength of schedule and the non-conference games they have scheduled.
The prevailing thinking would be that the 2019 overall strength of schedule for the Miami football program should be stronger than what the Hurricanes non-conference schedule would be ranked. Miami opens with Florida and then plays Bethune-Cookman, Central Michigan and Florida International later in the season.
Oklahoma City newspaper the Oklahoman, college football writer Berry Tramel ranked the 64 power five teams, non-conference schedules for 2019. Matt Smith of SouthernPigskin.com ranked the Power five programs overall strength schedule for 2019. The discrepancies of those lists were surprising.
Miami will host Virginia, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech and Louisville in their ACC games this season. The Hurricanes travel to North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Florida State and Duke in 2019. The analysis of the outlook for Miami contending in the ACC Coastal has pointed to their favorable schedule this season as a major reason.
Tremel ranked Miami’s 2019 schedule one spot higher than the middle of the 64 power five teams. He suggests in his short synopsis that if the Miami football program wants to return to past glories that they have a non-conference schedule to match.
33. Miami: Florida in Orlando, Bethune-Cookman, Central Michigan, Florida International in Miami. The Hurricanes need a better schedule than this to resurrect their brand.
Canes Warning examined the need for teams from the FBS in general and the ACC and Miami football program more specifically in 2017 to stop scheduling games against FCS programs.

SouthernPigskin.Com and Smith have a drastically different outlook for the strength of schedule for the 2019 Miami football team than Tremel and the Oklahoman. Although no analysis was written about the strength of schedule provided by Southern Pigskin it is obvious they have no respect for the ACC Coastal Division.
Miami is ranked 61st out of 66 power five teams that include BYU and Notre Dame with the 64 teams in the power five conferences. North Carolina State, Virginia and Virginia Tech are ranked from 62-64 in their strength of schedule rankings.
The low rankings for Miami, Virginia and VaTech’s schedules are a clear indication of Southern Pigskin’s projections for North Carolina, Duke, Pittsburgh and Georgia Tech. The Tar Heels, Blue Devils, Panthers and Yellow Jackets are hard to read entering 2018.
UNC has Mack Brown returning to Chapel Hill in his first season. Duke has to replace quarterback Daniel Jones who was the sixth pick in the NFL: Draft. Pittsburgh is coming off a surprising run to win the ACC Coastal in 2019 despite an overall record of 7-7.
Georgia Tech is finally switching out of the triple option offense under new head coach Geoff Collins. The projected bottom half of the ACC Coastal Division clearly brings down the schedules of the Cavaliers, Hokies and Hurricanes. The latter three teams are the favorites to win the Coastal.

Mendenhall's extended U.Va. contract assures him $4.45M in 2024 (dailypress.com; Teel)
Virginia football coach Bronco Mendenhall’s extended contract echoes his original with $150,000 annual increases in supplemental pay, assuring him $4.45 million in total compensation for the deal’s final year, 2024.
Hired in December 2016, Mendenhall’s first contract called for him to make at least $3.7 million in 2019, $3.85 million in 2020, $4 million in 2021 and $4.15 million in 2022. The amended pact does not change those minimums and guarantees him $4.3 million in 2023 and $4.45 million in 2024.
ACC head football coaches contracted to make more than Mendenhall in 2019 include Clemson’s Dabo Swinney ($10.25 million), Florida State’s Willie Taggart ($5 million) and Virginia Tech’s Justin Fuente ($4 million).
Signed in April, Swinney’s new 10-year pact averages $9.3 million in guaranteed compensation. He’s making more in 2019 because of a $1 million retention bonus paid in March and a $1 million insurance premium due in September.
After a 2-10 finish in Mendenhall’s 2016 debut, Virginia has progressed steadily. The Cavaliers went 6-7 in 2017 and qualified for postseason for the first time in six years. Last year they finished 8-5 and defeated South Carolina in the Belk Bowl, the program’s first bowl victory since 2005.
Mendenhall won 99 games in 11 seasons with Brigham Young before succeeding Mike London at U.Va.
Mendenhall’s $500,000 base salary and following bonuses remain the same in his extended contract.

If Mendenhall leaves U.Va. prior to Dec. 4, he owes the university $3 million. That amount decreases $600,000 annually.
If Virginia fires Mendenhall without cause, it owes him all remaining guaranteed salary through 2024, offset by his income from subsequent employment.
Four Cardinals Named to Phil Steele's All-ACC Team - University of Louisville Athletics (gocards.com; Gasparro)
Highlighted by offensive tackle Mekhi Becton, four University of Louisville football standouts have been named preseason All-ACC by Phil Steele in his 2019 College Football Preview.
Becton earned first-team honors, while wide receiver Dez Fitzpatrick, linebacker C.J. Avery and kick returner Hassan were named to the fourth team.
A 6-foot-7,368-pounder, Becton started all 12 games for the Cardinals last season at left tackle, while starting 22 in his career. The native of Highland Springs,Va.,scored his first career touchdown when he plowed in from one yard in a win over Indiana State.
Fitzpatrick was second on the tem with 31 receptions for 422 yards and three touchdowns, while averaging 13.6 yards per catch. The product of Farmington Hills, Mich., caught a season high five passes for 62 yards at Virginia and had three other contests when he caught four passes. In 25 career games, Fitzpatrick has caught 76 passes for 1.121 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Moving to linebacker last season, Avery was second on the team with 56 tackles in nine games. The native of Grenada, Miss., led the team in interceptions with two -- the first of his career. He posted a career high 15 tackles in a loss at Boston College and added seven stops versus Wake Forest and Kentucky.
Hall, a true freshman last year, proved to be one of the top kick returners in the country. The Atlanta, Ga., product finished with 818 kick return yards, the sixth-most in school history. Hall averaged 24.1 yards a return, which ranked 35th nationally. The 6-foot-0 rising sophomore returned a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown versus Clemson.

USA TODAY Sports is getting ready for the 2019 college football season by breaking down the best players at each position in the Bowl Subdivision. Up next: the running backs.
The list includes an AJ (Dillon), a J.K. (Dobbins) and a CJ (Verdell) but just one senior, a former Power Five transfer who might lead the SEC in rushing. As at quarterback, it's a top-heavy group: Wisconsin's Jonathan Taylor and Clemson's Travis Etienne are the consensus top players at the position.
1. Jonathan Taylor, Wisconsin (Jr.)
Taylor has cracked 100 yards in all but five of his 27 career games and has run for 4,171 yards across his first two seasons, setting the All-America product on pace to become the leading rusher in FBS history. He'll shoulder an even bigger load in 2019 as the Badgers break in a first-year starting quarterback.
2. Travis Etienne, Clemson (Jr.)
Etienne is no longer flying under the radar after his sophomore successes, which included an FBS-best 24 rushing touchdowns on 8.13 yards per carry during the Tigers' perfect season. He combines with sophomore quarterback Trevor Lawrence to give Clemson the best backfield in college football.
3. D'Andre Swift, Georgia (Jr.)
Swift's talent has outweighed his touches across his first two years with the Bulldogs, though his production saw a significant uptick across the second half of last season. He's in line for even more carries as a junior, which should give Georgia another Heisman Trophy contender to go with Jake Fromm.
4. AJ Dillon, Boston College (Jr.)
Injuries slowed Dillon in 2018, though he still ended up edging Etienne by a hair to lead the ACC in rushing yards per game. The centerpiece of the Eagles' offense — and a tone-setter for the program's physical approach — Dillon is in line for 1,500 yards and double-digit scores behind a line that's inexperienced but loaded with potential.

It was reported that Clemson football WR Amari Rodgers was making a speedy recovery from his torn ACL, being months ahead of schedule.
Clemson 247’s Anna Hickey first reported that Tiger wide receiver Amari Rodgers was on pace to be two months ahead in his recovery following an ACL tear earlier this spring.
Rodgers, a junior wide receiver for Clemson football, tore his ACL during spring practice in March and was expected to miss the majority of the 2019 season due to the injury.
With the news that Rodgers is on pace to recover nearly two months earlier than what was originally expected, it is certainly conceivable that he could be back on the football field before the end of the regular season.
The typical recovery time for an athlete to be back at 100 percent following ACL surgery is 9-12 months. There have been rare cases where an athlete is able to return before that timeframe, but that is the normal amount of time it takes.
For Rodgers to be ahead of schedule, it means he is taking his rehab seriously and is working the muscles to get better sooner rather than later.
However, I still wouldn’t expect him to be back on the field much earlier than that nine month window. With recovery and rehab going from April to November, that would put him right at eight months.
It’s certainly possible that Rodgers could return for, perhaps, the South Carolina game to end the regular season and then participate in postseason activity, which could include the ACC Championship game and a berth in the CFB Playoff if the Tigers are able to get back there for a fifth-straight season.
Rodgers could play in up to four games and still redshirt, saving a year of eligibility.
Currently, it’s still early in the process to know when Rodgers will return to the field. He is clearly making great progress and is putting in the work to get back as soon as possible. Right now, I’d expect to see him back on the field before the 2019 Clemson football season comes to a close, but how soon still remains a question mark.

Then the SEC and B1G snapped their fingers and "poof!" 2018 happened.

USF at Georgia Tech
Georgia Tech's football team knew the USF Bulls were no pushovers, but the Yellow Jackets were winning on the road when the home team erupted for 21 points in the 4th quarter.
Old Dominion at Virginia Tech
The Hokies already held the record for one of the worst upset losses in college football history (James Madison), but VT had no reason to think that a winless C-USA team would hand them their first loss of the season... right? That game was in Norfolk, this one is in Blacksburg - and it's personal!
...and while I'm not holding out a lot of hope, I'd like to see last year's losses avenged in these games, too:

It had been 6 years since the Seminoles lost to the Gators, but last year UF came into Doak Campbell and beat the home team by 27; now it's payback time, if not this year then as soon as possible.

Clemson at Syracuse (Sept. 14)
Clemson is 17-1 against the ACC over the past two seasons, and 15 of those wins came by at least a 14-point margin. Syracuse has been the exception to the rule, upsetting the Tigers two years ago when Kelly Bryant suffered an injury in the first half and darn near knocking off Clemson in Death Valley last year when Trevor Lawrence got hurt late in the second quarter. Could the Orange do it again despite losing quarterback Eric Dungey?
Notre Dame at Stanford (Nov. 30)
If either the Irish or the Cardinal are still in the playoff hunt by the end of November, this will be one of the most important games—perhaps the singularly most important one—of the year. Conversely, if both teams are hovering at 8-3 and this is merely a non-conference showdown between teams on the outer fringe of the New Year's Six conversation, it wouldn't even be one of the five most intriguing games of the day.
And the latter scenario is more likely, given the difficulty of each team's schedule leading up to this point.

5. Notre Dame at Michigan (Oct. 26)
What happened in 2018: In a Week 1 showdown with massive season-long implications, Notre Dame jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first eight minutes of what then became a defensive grind. Aside from a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and a relatively meaningless 80-yard drive in the closing minutes, Michigan never got going in a 24-17 Notre Dame victory.
What's changed: It was Shea Patterson's first game with Michigan and Ian Book didn't even take a snap for Notre Dame in last year's contest, so the quarterback situation is different on both sides. And each team lost critical starters from all three levels of the defense, making it tough to know if either, both or neither will be great on that side of the field again. We're fairly confident Michigan will be, but Notre Dame is a tougher call.
