Here are some ideas I had for what the ACC might be able to do about the money situation... [SIZE=5][B]Rx: Main TV Contract.[/B][/SIZE] The next "look-in" for the ACC and ESPN is reportedly scheduled for 2022. What is the purpose of these look-ins, and how might the ACC be able to use them to increase revenue? The ACC’s contract with ESPN calls for periodic “look-ins” - times when executives from both entities will be able to sit down and discuss whether the contract terms needs to be renegotiated. This is NOT an automatic adjustment based on performance! Whether the ACC exceeds expectations or grossly under-performs has no bearing on the contract. So what good are these look-ins? The purpose of the look-in is to address changes in the media marketplace and make adjustments in the ACC/ESPN contract accordingly. How could that play out? Let's say the internet-based TV market is really taking off by then (not hard to imagine). Could there be a market for an a la carte ACC digital network? One of the major reasons why the Tigers are expected to dominate the ACC and get back to the playoff is because of Heisman contender Trevor Lawrence at quarterback. Lawrence, now a sophomore, led the Tigers to a perfect 15-0 season taking over as the starter as a freshman and never looked back. He was the Offensive MVP of the National Championship game. That was true five years ago. It's just as true now as teams recruit their 2020 classes. LSU, Alabama and Georgia are ranked in the top five. Ten SEC schools, including [URL='https://www.knoxnews.com/sports/govolsxtra/']Tennessee[/URL], are ranked in the top 25 in 247Sports' composite rankings. But a couple of SEC outsiders could provide even more competition, thanks to new coaching hires at North Carolina and Georgia Tech. Mack Brown, who won 158 games in 16 seasons at Texas, came out of retirement after last season and returned to North Carolina, where he coached from 1988 to 1997. Brown’s first two teams at North Carolina won one game apiece. His last two teams there each won 10 games. Brown has won wherever he has been. He also has recruited well. He apparently hasn’t lost his recruiting touch. The Tar Heels already have 15 commitments, including four four-stars, for 2020. It’s highly unlikely Brown will out-recruit UT, which ranked 12th nationally in 2019 in coach Jeremy Pruitt’s first full recruiting year. The Vols currently are No. 25. But Brown might make it more difficult to get players out of North Carolina. Geoff Collins isn’t recruiting as well as North Carolina in his first year at Georgia Tech. However, his recruiting work far exceeds that of his predecessor, Paul Johnson. And Collins' initial success – 15 commitments (but only one four-star) – has the Yellow Jackets ranked 14th. Like Pruitt, Collins built his coaching reputation as a defensive coordinator and a recruiter. He’s also a good promoter, which he’s already demonstrating at Georgia Tech. It’s not easy for a college program to generate publicity in a pro town the size of Atlanta. Moreover, Georgia Tech long has been overshadowed by Georgia. That’s why Collins’ promotional skills could have an impact. So could his recruiting. There are former Noles littered across the league with multiple players making Pro Bowls recently. Jalen Ramsey, Xavier Rhodes, Derwin James and [URL='https://chopchat.com/2019/03/13/fsu-alums-lamarcus-joyner-signs-huge-deal-oakland-raiders/']Lamarcus Joyner[/URL] just to name a few who have signed contracts worth millions of dollars. However, none of those former players could help the ‘Noles secondary last season who gave up a record 30 passing touchdowns and over 3,200 passing yards. It was a rough season for [URL='https://chopchat.com/2018/11/26/fsu-football-3-reasons-harlon-barnett-deserves-a-pass-for-2018/']Harlon Barnett[/URL] in his first year as defensive coordinator. A former NFL defensive back himself, he couldn’t be happy with that unit’s performance last season. I wrote how I expect the defense to bounce back as a whole in 2019 as they had a lot of things going against them. However, one thing that definitely needs to improve is the play of the defensive backs.
