Welcome to Cow Appreciation Day!

On Cow Appreciation Day, people wear cow costumes—or even any sort of cow apparel—and head to Chick-fil-A to receive free food. Adults receive a free entrée, and children receive a free kids meal. In 2017, about 1.8 million people participated at over 2,200 restaurants. Why cows? The day honors Chick-fil-A's "Eat Mor Chikin" Cows. They were introduced in 1995 on a billboard, where a cow was sitting on the back of another cow and painting "Eat Mor Chikin." The cows have since been used in advertisements using mediums such as television and the internet, and have even been on water towers.

Chick-fil-A is giving out free food in honor of their annual Cow Appreciation Day.

On Tuesday, July 9, chicken lovers are invited to go to their local Chick-fil-A restaurant from opening until 7 p.m. and receive a free entree.

Chick-fil-A teased the event on twitter saying, “#CowAppreciationDay is only a few days away, do you think that’s what this is referring to? Either way, we’re excited to celebrate with you on July 9th!”

How much does Syracuse spend on each sport? 2 lead the country, football lags (PS; Carlson)

The Syracuse athletic department generated record revenues for the second consecutive year in 2017-18 and, as is generally the case with college athletic departments, it also spent a record amount.

Syracuse reported that it took in $93.8 million in revenue from athletics in 2017-18. It reported spending $77.1 million.
Syracuse, and every other school in the country, self-reports financial information to the federal government annually in order to comply with the Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act. The most recent numbers cover the 2017-18 academic year.
With 16 sport offerings (cross country, indoor track and outdoor track are combined), Syracuse offers a relatively small array of sports compared to most power-five schools. The benefit of that limited number is that the athletic department can fund most of them at very high levels.

Only one program at Syracuse, the football team, was funded at a level that ranked in the bottom half of ACC schools. Syracuse reported that eight of its programs ranked in the Top 10 in the country in spending, including two programs that spent the most on their sport.

Schools often argue that the EADA data shouldn't be used for comparisons because accounting methods can differ at different universities. But the federal data provides one of the rare windows into athletic spending of private schools such as Syracuse, and the federal government provides detailed explanations on how the accounting should be done in order to keep the data as accurate as possible.

Item: While Orange-dreaming in mid-summer about next week’s ACC football media kickoff event and how the ‘Cuse program will be perceived, and about next month’s educational and cultural excursion to Italy for the young basketball team, it never gets old to be reminded that Syracuse is in select company as one of only a handful of major college programs, and the only one in the ACC, to win both the football and basketball national championships.

What’s even more impressive about this dual-trophy feat is that all but two of the 10 schools on the list are major state universities with huge enrollments, leading to the other takeaway that as the fellow private school, Syracuse really is the “Stanford of the East Coast.”
Select company. The 10 schools that have won national championships in football (the years listed first) and basketball (the years listed second), with some schools sharing the football title votes of multiple polls in different eras, and Florida the only school to possess both trophies simultaneously:

For the second-straight year, Syracuse football is represented on a list of the freakiest players in college football.
It’s which player earning such distinction that may surprise some.

Special teams ace and running back Otto Zaccardo, a walk-on senior from Sudbury, Mass., landed at No. 49 on Bruce Feldman’s 2019 Freaks List.

Feldman is a national college football writer for The Athletic who combs the country for the top weight-room warriors, the players who physically and athletically stand out among their peers.

He wrote of Zaccardo:

One of the Orange’s top coverage guys on their outstanding special teams units, the 5-11, 207-pound walk-on is a powerful dude, squatting 615 pounds and benching 355. He also does 225 for 28 reps and hang cleans 320. Zaccardo is pretty fast too, clocking a 4.51 40 this offseason.

Zaccardo embodies the strides the Orange has gained in the weight room since coach Dino Babers and staff arrived in Syracuse ahead of the 2016 season.

It’s Clemson’s world, and the rest of the ACC is just living in it.
Things have trended that way for nearly half a decade. The Tigers are 34-2 in ACC play since 2015 and have won four straight league titles, making them the first team in conference history to do so in outright fashion consecutively. There isn’t much evidence Clemson will slow down entering 2019, especially given the majority of one of college football’s most talented offenses returns.
Thus, the question the ACC at large faces in 2019 is simple: Can anyone challenge these Tigers?

Looking at things a little under two months out from the season, finding a legitimate contender is a murky process — at best. The league’s two Florida powerhouses (Florida State, Miami) are trying to hop from rebuilding mode to contending mode. Meanwhile, the ACC Coastal is searching for a representative that will be more than a Clemson College Football Playoff sacrifice.
247Sports will preview each of the power five conferences over the coming week to get you ready for the 2019 college football season. We begin with the ACC.
Three Major Storylines

  1. Manny Diaz’s Miami Reshuffle: No team in the Coastal Division comes with the ceiling of Miami. Yet few teams in that league come with more questions than the Hurricanes. Miami promoted Manny Diaz to head coach, after a bit pit stop at Temple, following Mark Richt’s abrupt retirement. Diaz’s first head coaching job comes in his hometown. Diaz replaced Miami’s entire offensive staff his first week on the job hoping to spark a group that finished 75th nationally in yards per play. Diaz hired Alabama quarterbacks coach Dan Enos to run his offense, a leader with experience coaching Miami’s biggest weakness – quarterbacks. In that vein, Miami is still looking for its lead signal-caller. Ohio State transfer Tate Martell is in contention, but he’s yet to separate from incumbent starter N’Kosi Perry and redshirt freshman Jarren Williams. Quarterback’s been a Hurricane bugaboo for the last two seasons, largely spoiling defenses and skill talent capable of winning championships. Miami has the framework of championship contender, especially after notable transfer portal additions, but the quarterback quandary will dog Miami until a solution is found. Diaz knows that’s priority No. 1 of his tenure.
  2. Can Florida State Rebound? We’ve seen an offseason PR blitz by Florida State to shuffle any blame for the Seminoles’ current woes toward the old regime run by Jimbo Fisher. But it’s still Willie Taggart’s regime that saw a record-setting 36-year bowl streak snapped. The Seminoles had a number of issues in Year 1 of Taggart’s tenure. First among them, and the thing that had to be addressed this summer, was the offensive line. Florida State’s quarterbacks were reduced to mobile tackling dummies for much of last season, and the offense finished 129th nationally in yards per carry. The offensive line will have four new starters in 2019 along with a new OC (Kendal Briles) and a new o-line coach (Randy Clements). Both should help the Seminole offense play closer to its talent level. If that happens, and that’s a big if, the Seminoles should at the least jump two or three games in the win column. Even if o-line improvement occurs, it’s hard to see Florida State challenging Clemson. Taggart needs a season or two to reset both the talent floor (Fisher’s final recruiting efforts left something to be desired) and the overall culture.

Way too early Louisville football game-by-game predictions (bigredlouie.com; Lane)

...
Syracuse
November 23rd

Just like that senior day arrives, and the Cards will say goodbye to 17 seniors.

There will forever be a special place for this group of seniors and guys like G.G. Robinson, Seth Dawkins, Amonte Caban, Boosie Whitlow, Jordan Davis, and plenty of others who have put their bodies on the line for four or five seasons, helping the Cards reach new heights but also seeing the end of an era in devastating lows. They’ll be remembered for having helped usher in a new era under Scott Satterfield, giving it all they have to help leave the program in a better place than it had been during their time as Cardinals.

Unfortunately for them, they’ll do it against a team like Syracuse who’s electric, uptempo offense will test the depth and stamina of the Cards defense.

In what would normally be a year of transition, Dino Babers has a program ready to take another step in the ACC as Tommy DeVito takes over at quarterback after the graduation of oft-injured Eric Dungey. Unlike most backups, DeVito is experienced having played in seven games last season. The offense will transition a bit, becoming more balanced, but will maintain the high speed.

Moe Neal and Abdul Adams return and will give Syracuse another dynamic running attack, while speedy receivers Sean Riley and Nykeim Johnson will challenge the secondary of Louisville in a major way.

Even with there being nothing to play late last season, the Cards competed against Syracuse early before ultimately giving in as they did in most competitions. If Louisville can get pressure on the offensive line and keep the Orange from making big plays that keep the field and more importantly the clock moving than maybe they can hang in for a while. But with nearly every position on the defense lacking depth and proven experience, it could be a long game for the Cards.
Prediction: Louisville 30, Syracuse 44
Record: 5-6

The Miami football program had one of the busiest 2019 offseasons in college football. With 47 days remaining until they kickoff against Florida the newsworthy Hurricanes should continue into fall.

The Miami football program’s whirlwind offseason began when Mark Richt abruptly announced his retirement just three days after the Hurricanes blowout loss to Wisconsin in the Pinstripe Bowl on December 27. Manny Diaz was hired11 hours later after Richt’s retirement and 18 days after being hired by Temple.
The offseason was off and running. Diaz fired Richt’s entire offensive staff on New Year’s Eve. The next month became a Hurricane watch as Diaz rebuilt the offensive staff and added players to the Miami football roster through the transfer portal. Diaz kept fans and the media engaged by using social media for cryptic announcements.

The addition of former Ohio State quarterback Tate Martell brought the most attention. That continued into February when Diaz announced a major shakeup of the recruiting staff. The interest in the Miami football program during the 2019 offseason has been the highest its been in over a decade.
The excitement entering 2019 from most close followers of the Miami Hurricanes is cautiously optimistic. Opening against and one of Diaz’s mentors, Dan Mullen adds more salt to the beginning of the 2019 season. The trip to Orlando to face the Gators cannot come soon enough.

Chris Hummer of 247 Sports has Miami as the ACC’s number one storyline entering the 2019 season. Miami will be the favorite to win the ACC Coastal Division by many prognosticators.

Examining (again) whether Notre Dame Football should join a conference (slapthesign.com; Belden)

One of the most perpetual of discussions in the college football world is if and when Notre Dame football will join a conference.

The Notre Dame football program has long frustrated a faction of fans who think it’s time that the Irish should take their talents to one of the nation’s power five conferences. I’ve long been over how Notre Dame absolutely does not have to join a conference. They just don’t. Them joining a conference proves nothing. A “13th data point” proves nothing for a program that regularly plays one of the most difficult and diverse schedules in college football.
Before Notre Dame reached an agreement with the ACC, they essentially were in a conference without actually being in a conference: Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue, Boston College, Pittsburgh, Stanford, USC, and Navy were the teams in Notre Dame’s “conference.”

Notre Dame played most of those teams pretty much every year, with obvious occasional replacements and substitutions when schedules just didn’t work out. Schools like Tennessee would make brief appearances on Notre Dame’s schedule in such cases.

My Take on Notre Dame - 2019 (RX; HM)

My Take on Notre Dame - 2019

There have been a number of articles posted in the last few days about whether Notre Dame should be "forced" to join the ACC - or any conference, for that matter. Some examples:

Chopchat: Why ACC Football must force Notre Dame to join as full time member
The ACC football world is essentially being held hostage by the decision from Notre Dame to join the conference as a full time member in all other sports.
SaturdayBlitz: Notre Dame Football: It’s time the Fighting Irish finally join a conference
The Fighting Irish have been successful, but they must have a perfect season now to make it to the College Football Playoff. If they had a conference championship, they could make it to the playoff with a mistake along the way.
SlapTheSign: Examining (again) whether Notre Dame Football should join a conference
Before Notre Dame reached an agreement with the ACC, they essentially were in a conference without actually being in a conference: Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue, Boston College, Pittsburgh, Stanford, USC, and Navy were the teams in Notre Dame’s “conference.”
Here's my take:
Would it be fun to have 3 more ACC football games involving Notre Dame every year? Yes.
Would it be fun to watch Notre Dame play in the ACC Championship Game? Yes.
That said, the current situation IS mutually beneficial and I have no problem with it as-is.

How does the Notre Dame deal benefit the ACC?
The 5-game scheduling agreement between the ACC and Notre Dame benefits the ACC from a revenue perspective:

  • better attendance - stadiums are full when the Irish are in town
  • higher prices/demand for tickets - Notre Dame is often the most valuable ticket
  • higher tv ratings when an ACC team plays Notre Dame
  • better ACCN distribution thanks to Irish fans
However, the Irish should not be confused with the ACC football champion - those five games are strictly non-conference. It is a marquee scheduling agreement - nothing more, nothing less.

Nearly 9,000 in CNY will get $6.7M in medical debt erased; say thanks to CBA student (PS; Mulder)

Nearly $7 million in medical debt owed by Central New Yorkers is being paid off thanks to the fundraising efforts of a Jamesville teenager.
Talia Zames, 18, who graduated from Christian Brothers Academy last month, collected $20,000 in a fundraising campaign.
The money will wipe out $6.7 million in medical debt for 8,860 people living in Onondaga, Madison and Oneida counties who are either insolvent or earn less than two times the federal poverty level or about $51,500 for a family of four.

Central New Yorkers whose bills are being erased will be notified by RIP in letters that will start arriving by mail around Friday.

Zames turned the money over to RIP Medical Debt of Rye, N.Y. That nonprofit, founded five years ago by two former debt collectors, uses donations to buy old unpaid medical debt for pennies on the dollar. RIP then forgives the debt for those in need. RIP says it abolishes medical debt permanently, leaving debtors with no tax liability or other adverse consequences.
RIP became prominent in 2016 when television host John Oliver worked with the nonprofit to pay off medical debt for about 9,000 people.

Zames got the idea for the fundraiser from her grandmother, Barbara Davis, who read about two women from Ithaca who raised $12,500 and donated it last year to RIP. That money was used to pay off medical debt for nearly 1,200 upstate New York residents. Zames visited RIP’s website and decided to start a campaign of her own called, “Project Eraser.”

Zames said her family struggled with medical debt when one of her younger sisters was rushed to the hospital with severe internal bleeding. The cost of the week-long hospitalization exceeded $150,000. Even though her parents, Mark and Phyllis Zames, had health insurance, their out-of-pocket portion of the bill was about $30,000.

“My family was fortunate enough to be able to pay off the debt, but many people are not that lucky,” she said.

He is going to ask for a waiver to play immediately. But the NCAA just tightened the criteria under which waivers will be granted. I think his chances of getting the waiver are now greatly diminished.

You snooze, you lose.
