Welcome to National Respect Canada Day!

Apparently today's National Respect Canada Day.
But if you forgot, we don't blame you. Why?
1.) You've probably apologized a dozen times for it (it's the Canadian thing to do).
2.) It's a lame holiday. Everyone knows National Respect Canada Day is every day for true Canucks.

3.) It's also National Tapioca Pudding Day and those pudding cups certainly aren't going to eat themselves.

SU News

https://www.syracuse.com/orangebask...ower-index-favors-syracuse-in-nine-games.html (PS; Carlson)

ESPN published the projections formed by its Football Power Index calculations earlier this week, and there are two ways for Syracuse fans to view the numbers.

On one hand, Syracuse is calculated as a favorite in nine of its 12 games. On the other hand, ESPN’s projections, which include 10,000 simulations, average out to a season record of 6.7-5.3.

Games, of course, are not played via computer or mathematical simulation, and the same system (along with almost everybody else) vastly underrated Syracuse last season.

The projections do, however, provide a couple of things that are worth keeping in mind as the season approaches. The schedule includes just one gimme, and there are a lot of games that could go either way.

The system gives Syracuse a 98.3 percent chance of beating Holy Cross. The most likely FBS win for the Orange is against Liberty, where Syracuse is calculated to have an 84.6 percent probability of winning.

The toughest game on the schedule is, of course, Clemson. ESPN calculates Syracuse has a 6.3 percent chance of beating the defending national champions in the Carrier Dome.

While the Week 3 game against Clemson looks like a sure sellout and a potential opportunity for ESPN’s “College Gameday” to visit Syracuse for the first time, the Orange has at least one tricky test to pass before that happens. ESPN calculates Syracuse has a 57.3 percent chance of winning at Maryland, which SU would need to beat to set up the biggest game on the SU campus in years.

ESPN’s calculations make the Orange the favorite in nine of 12 games next season, including all of its nonconference games. The only games ESPN views Syracuse as an underdog in come at home against Clemson and on the road against North Carolina State and Florida State.

https://insidetheloudhouse.com/2019/07/12/syracuse-football-espn-fpi-analytics-good-bad-ugly/ (itlh; Esden Jr)

The latest ESPN FPI Analytics has been released and here is the good, bad, and the ugly on the Syracuse football squad for the 2019 season.
Syracuse football is used to being underrated. For much of the 21st century they’ve deserved the criticism, but you’d think after their record-breaking 2018 campaign (10-3) they would’ve earned a bit more respect.

The latest ESPN FPI Analytics was released this week and the Orange were ranked as the 49th best team overall per these rankings.

Which is good enough for eighth-best among ACC teams:

  • Clemson (No. 1)
  • Florida State (No. 21)
  • Miami (No. 27)
  • Virginia Tech (No. 32)
  • Virginia (No. 43)
  • NC State (No. 46)
  • Pitt (No. 48)
Speaking of the conference, Syracuse has a 0.3 percent chance to win the ACC according to the experts. The Tigers own the highest odds at 88.2 percent, with the remaining 11.8 percent divided up among nine other squads in the ACC. While four teams have literally a zero percent chance to win the conference (Georgia Tech, Louisville, Boston College, and Wake Forest).

Item: The ACC released its 2019 football media guide this week, including the conference bowl protocol for selecting teams to play in which postseason games following the upcoming season. After last year when the Orange Bowl hosted a College Football Playoff semi-final matchup, the game is back in play for the ACC champion in 2019 (although a top four ranked ACC title team goes to the CFP), giving Syracuse a goal to shoot for after a decisive Camping World Bowl victory last season.

Dino Babers has been talking about winning national championships as a Northeast-based program this summer, raising eyebrows amidst his tour of football camps around the fertile recruiting territory that makes up an approximately six hour driving distance radius from Syracuse.

Heck, teams from the south have won 12 of the last 13 national titles, so in year four of his rebuild from scratch, Babers is raring to keep constructing a program that can contend with the Clemson’s, Florida State’s and Miami’s and their winning traditions and warmer climates.

With that in mind, there’s no place to go but up for the ‘Cuse in the ACC bowl game pecking order for 2019, after finishing as the only team besides national champion Clemson in the final 2018 Top 25 poll. That would mean a couple of scenarios:

It’s still a little early for legitimate opponent scouting for us as fans, but it’s certainly never too early to take a look around the conference, especially as the ACC Media Day approaches. And why not start with the top of the conference? I had the opportunity to talk with Ryan Kantor of Shakin the Southland, our Clemson sister site, about his outlook on his favorite team, what UNC fans might look for when the two match up, and, briefly, what he as an outsider thinks of UNC’s sideline overhaul this year. You can check out my answers to his questions about UNC over at STS, or through following this link. Otherwise, keep reading:

THB: Last year’s Tigers defensive line made waves after deciding en masse to stay in school and hunt a championship rather than be likely high-value NFL Draft picks, and then made good on that vow before making the jump to the pros. Clemson’s obviously got a stable of highly-ranked guys behind them, but what have you seen from the presumed starting defensive front for 2019 and what do you expect this year from them?

RK: Last year’s defensive line, affectionately known as the “Power Rangers,” was really special. Christian Wilkins, Clelin Ferrell, and Austin Bryant all chose to put off the NFL draft for another year and joined rising Junior DT Dexter Lawrence for one more go-round. Last year, Bryant actually tore his pectoral muscle, but rather than having season-ending surgery, chose to play through the pain (there wasn’t a significant risk of it worsening) and help his team get back to the top. That group is irreplaceable, but we’ll obviously have to try. Fortunately, there’s great talent ready to replace them.

Florida State picked up a commitment for its 2020 recruiting class on Friday.

Emanuel Rogers, a consensus three-star defensive tackle from Jensen Beach announced his commitment to the Seminoles to TC Palm.

Rogers, who is 6-6 and 305 pounds, has only played football for one season. He had 45 tackles (21 for a loss) and eight sacks in 2018. The rising Jensen Beach High senior chose FSU over offers from several Power 5 programs such as Florida, Tennessee, Auburn, Georgia, Miami and Michigan.

Rogers told TC Palm that FSU assistant coach Odell Haggins was a key reason why he selected the Seminoles.

“He’s been there for 25-plus years and I know when I get here he’s not going to leave and I’m going to have some other coach,” Rogers said, according to TC Palm. “I know he’s going to make me grow as a man and help me through life. That connection was very important to me. I don’t really trust people like that, so when I heard him talking, he had my trust. When I went to other colleges, it didn’t feel the same as when I went to Florida State.”

Media days - the unofficial kickoff to the start of the 2019 college football season - are nearly here.

This is the peak of "talkin' season," and college football's best players and coaches will be in the spotlight with news conferences in front of the national media. That of course, begs the question: What kind of questions can we expect?

MORE: SN preseason rankings, All-Americans, predictions and more

Here are five storylines that will emerge during the Power 5 conference media days, which begin on Monday with the SEC and the Big 12:

SEC: Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa
SEC Media Days run Monday through Thursday, and Alabama will take the spotlight in its customary Wednesday spot. Tagovailoa, a second-team Sporting News All-American, will take centerstage alongside teammates Jerry Jeudy and Dylan Moses. Last year, Tagovailoa was riding the high of a pinch-hit appearance that led the Crimson Tide to a national championship in 2017. The hype was real, as he finished with 3,966 passing yards and 43 touchdowns to just six interceptions en route to a second-place finish in the Heisman race.

Now, a full-scale dissection begins. Can he stay healthy? What will the offense be like with new coordinator Steve Sarkisian? Can he be considered a franchise quarterback at the next level? Alabama coach Nick Saban can bristle at those questions. How Tagovailoa reacts will generate a larger reaction.

Sporting News has Tagovailoa as the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Of course, we already know who the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft is going to be - but he won't be at ACC Kickoff.

ACC: Clemson coach Dabo Swinney
The ACC Kickoff runs Wednesday and Thursday and will offer Dabo Swinney the chance to address media as a national champion for the second time in three years. This is no longer "little 'ole Clemson." The Tigers have been in the national spotlight, with everything from a candlelit fast-food dinner at the White House, a drug test appeal that was denied by the NCAA and Swinney's joke that he was "Osama bin Dabo" in Alabama.

https://247sports.com/college/virgi...9-ACC-Football-Head-Coach-Hot-Seat-133613045/ (247sports.com; Sis)

In the 2019 offseason, North Carolina, Louisville, Georgia Tech, and Miami all introduced new head coaches. These ACC programs decided to go a new direction, a common theme across football programs that do not meet expectations within a few years.

Of the fourteen ACC programs, only N.C. State, Duke, Clemson, Boston College, and Wake Forest have had the same head coach for five or more seasons.

So how do the current coaches in the ACC fare in terms of job security?

Recently, CBSSports rated every Head Coach of all 130 FBS programs, which can be found here. These are the rankings used to rate each head coach.

Scale:
...
...
Syracuse, Dino Babers

Dino Babers' 3 seasons - 18-19
Hot Seat Rating: 2 - All good... for now
Analysis: Syracuse hasn't been a national power since the 90s. Before the arrival of Dino Babers, Syracuse had not ended in the AP Top 25 since 2001. Babers first two seasons didn't offer much promise with back-to-back 4-8 seasons, but the 2018 10-3 breakout season has the program back on the rise. Syracuse defeated Clemson in 2017 and nearly took them down in Death Valley in 2018. Syracuse has installed a potent offense and are beginning to pick up the pieces on the defensive end. After the peak of the last 17 years last season on the football field, Babers might be more than all good for now.

College football’s long offseason ends this week with the arrival of conference media days.
The Gators will meet with reporters in Hoover, Ala., on Monday during the SEC’s four-day marathon. USF and UCF will have their day Tuesday in Newport, R.I., with Florida State and Miami getting the spotlight Wednesday and Thursday at the ACC Football Kickoff in Charlotte.
[ MORE COLLEGE FOOTBALL: We ranked every 2019 college football game involving Florida teams ]
Here are five things to watch:
1. AAC realignment
American Athletic Conference Commissioner Mike Aresco addresses the media during a past media day in Newport, R.I. (AP Photo/Stew Milne, File)Advertisement

We know UConn is bolting the AAC for the Big East, but we don’t yet know how the AAC will respond. Expect some insight, if not a final decision, when commissioner Mike Aresco addresses reporters Tuesday morning.
[ RELATED: UConn calls USF ‘Southern Florida’ in AAC breakup letter ]
Whatever the AAC decides will give us a glimpse at what metrics will matter when the next big wave of conference realignment hits (probably around 2023-25).

If the league adds a big football name (Boise State), then maybe brand names matter even more than they did during the last round.

If the league chooses a school with a national fan base (BYU, Army), then maybe TV markets don’t matter as much as they did when the Big Ten added Rutgers.

Or the league could go the other way and consider an up-and-coming school from a top-50 TV market (North Texas, Georgia State, Old Dominion), which suggests that cord-cutting hasn’t lessened the importance of potential viewers.

If being good at football and men’s basketball matters most, then Buffalo and Alabama-Birmingham could make sense.

And if the AAC stays at 11 teams —the most likely bet — that says there aren’t any teams that add value to the conference. It also means the pool of potential expansion candidates won’t be large in the next shift.

2. The ACC Network

[ RELATED: FSU SEMINOLES Florida State, Miami will have two early games on upcoming ACC Network ]
But distribution for new networks is always tricky, and negotiations often come down to the final days before kickoff, which is why you’re seeing electronic billboards about it around Tampa. Commissioner John Swofford will update the media on where the conference and its network stand.

https://chopchat.com/2019/07/14/fsu-football-website-says-noles-miami-must-make-acc-bounce-back/ (chopchat.com; Parker)

FSU Football and their rivals from Coral Gables were supposed to dominate the conference, but it seems like the two teams will never meet in Charlotte.

When the rival Miami Hurricanes joined the ACC before the 2004 football season, it was thought that when the conference held their first championship game for the sport the following season that the Canes and FSU football would meet year after year after year as arguably the two biggest names in the conference at the time.
In the 14 seasons that the ACC has had a football title game, the teams have met on the field in either Jacksonville, Tampa, Orlando or Charlotte a total of…zero times. Over the same span, the Seminoles have made it to the title game five times (winning four of them) while Miami has had more losing seasons (two) than title game appearances (one) over that span.

Cheap joke aside, there is no doubt that the ACC has not gotten all it thought of when FSU football and the Hurricanes became conference foes – and after a 2018 season where the conference took a step back among Power Five leagues, each team knows they have to do their part to bring it back.

One website took it a step further as College Football News put it squarely on both the Seminoles and the ‘Canes when they previewed the ACC this past week – and while they are not saying either team is going to upset Clemson this season, they alluded to what the future may hold.

After another nine-win season in 2018, NC State coach Dave Doeren was a hot commodity in the college football world. With numerous Power 5 schools interested in him, NC State locked him down with a new contract and a raise.

Doeren is set to make $3.25 million a year through 2023. He’s pushed the Wolfpack toward the top of the ACC’s Atlantic Division, but this year will be a test because he has some holes to fill on both sides of the ball.

Orlando Sentinel college insider Matt Murschel ranked all 130 FBS teams in the country entering the 2019 season. The Sentinel staff will take a closer look at a new team daily, counting backward from No. 130 to our projected No. 1 team.

Today at No. 41: NC State

Coach: David Doeren (43-34, entering seventh season; 66-38 overall)

2018 record: 9-4 overall, 5-3 in ACC; third in Atlantic Division

Look back: The Wolfpack had the offensive firepower to get through the season with a 5-3 ACC record thanks to the play of All-ACC quarterback Ryan Finley. Finley completed 68% of his passes and led the conference with 3,789 yards and 24 touchdowns. It was the second consecutive nine-win season for NC State, but an otherwise impressive year ended with a disappointing 52-13 loss to Texas A&M in the Gator Bowl.

Offensive starters returning: 3

Offensive starters lost: 5

Defensive starters returning: 6

Defensive starters lost: 4

Key losses: QB Ryan Finley, LT Tyler Jones, LG Terronne Prescod, C Garrett Bradbury, RB Reggie Gallaspy Jr., P A.J. Cole III, DE Darian Roseboro, DT Eurndraus Bryant, FS Dexter Wright

The ACC announced Thursday that it has finalized a new six-year bowl lineup, which begins in 2020 and runs through 2025. The changes are not dramatic, but they are definitely for the better. Namely, you can say goodbye to those bowl games in Detroit and Shreveport.

Say hello to the Holiday Bowl (yay!) and a yet-to-be-named bowl game that will be played annually at Fenway Park. Trading Detroit and Shreveport for Boston and San Diego is a win, I’d say. Additionally, ACC teams will play in the Gator Bowl on an annual basis beginning in 2020, rather than on a rotational basis.

The 2020-2025 bowl lineup:

  • Capital One Orange Bowl (Miami Gardens, Florida)
  • Belk Bowl (Charlotte, North Carolina)
  • Camping World Bowl (Orlando, Florida)
  • Hyundai Sun Bowl (El Paso, Texas)
  • Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grumman (Annapolis, Maryland)
  • New Era Pinstripe Bowl (New York City)
  • Outback Bowl (Tampa, Florida) – if the ACC’s opponent in the Capital One Orange Bowl is from the Big Ten
  • San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl (San Diego, California)
  • TaxSlayer Gator Bowl (Jacksonville, Florida)
  • Bowl game (Boston, Massachusetts) – managed by ESPN Events and Fenway Sports Management
Each season the ACC will also send one team to either the Gasparilla Bowl (Tampa), the Birmingham Bowl, or the First Responder Bowl (Dallas).

Football season inches closer with each passing day and it's time to turn our attention to Florida State's 2019 season.

The Seminoles will jump right into the mix with a neutral-site opener Boise State in Jacksonville on Aug. 31 at TIAA Bank Field.

FSU is coming off a 5-7 season in coach Willie Taggart's first year in 2018. It was the first losing season for the program since 1976.

Taggart and his revamped coaching staff have been working diligently this off-season to get the program headed in the right direction. But a coach is only as good as the players he has around him.

FSU beat writers Wayne McGahee III and Curt Weiler continue their countdown of the 30 most important players for the Seminoles if they're going to get back on track in 2019 with No. 18.

Wayne McGahee III: Defensive back Levonta Taylor
FSU's Levonta Taylor warms up before their game against Virginia Tech to open the season at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, Fla. On Monday Sept. 3, 2018.

Senior Levonta Taylor made an impact at FSU from the first day he arrived on campus.

The former five-star recruit -- and No. 1 cornerback in the country coming out of high school -- played in 12 games as a freshman and was one of the best cornerbacks in the country as a sophomore in 2017.

Taylor injured his back in the preseason before the 2018 and was limited to eight games after the injury was discovered midseason. He finished the year with 19 tackles, three pass break-ups, and his interception return for a touchdown that sealed the win over Samford.

His role in the FSU secondary changed in the spring. Taylor spent the spring playing safety rather than corner and looked very good during the transition.

We’re nearly one month away from college football starting up again, which has led to a plethora of preseason predictions over the past few days. Earlier this week, ESPN was the latest media outlet to jump in with their projections, as it released the latest version of its Football Power Index.

The FPI serves as a predictor for a team’s performance heading into next season. It shows which program rank above or below average.

In addition to ranking teams, the FPI also gives a projected record for each program that includes a potential conference championship.

As you’d expect, the highest-ranked team in the ACC is Clemson. The defending champions also have the best rank of any team in all of college football.

https://thespun.com/acc/clemson-tigers/link

Here is how the rest of the ACC unfolds based on projected records, per ESPN’s FPI:

ACC Atlantic:

  1. Clemson (12.3-0.7)
  2. Florida State (8.1-3.9)
  3. NC State (7.4-4.6)
  4. Syracuse (6.7-5.3)
  5. Wake Forest (6.1-5.9)
  6. Boston College (5.1-6.9)
  7. Louisville (4.4-7.6)
ACC Coastal:
  1. Virginia Tech (8.4-3.9)
  2. Miami (8.2-4.1)
  3. Virginia (7.4-4.7)
  4. Pittsburgh (6.7-5.5)
  5. North Carolina (5.4-4.6)
  6. Duke (5.3-6.7)
  7. Georgia Tech (3.7-8.3)

Did you catch it? A new movie on Netflix features a shout-out to Syracuse.

“Point Blank,” directed by Syracuse University alumnus Joe Lynch, premiered on the streaming service Friday. The action thriller stars Anthony Mackie and Frank Grillo, who both appeared in two “Captain America” movies and “Avengers: Endgame,” as an ER nurse and the murder suspect he must team up with to save his pregnant wife while battling rival criminals and corrupt cops along the way.

About 26 minutes into the movie, the characters meet at a Cincinnati train station as a PA system announces: “Last call, the 11:05 for Syracuse is now boarding.”

The reference, snuck in between a chase scene and a cool fight in a car wash, serves as a brief nod to Lynch’s alma mater -- and his wife’s hometown. The filmmaker met his wife Briana Mackay, a Cicero-North Syracuse High School graduate whose family still lives in Central New York, while both attended SU.

This Netflix video still shows a reference to Syracuse in the streaming service's new movie Point Blank, directed by Syracuse University alumnus Joe Lynch.

Lynch filmed two shorts while attending Syracuse University, “mAHARBA” and “hiBeams,” which earned him Filmmaker of the Year honors in 1999 in The Long Island Voice. He graduated in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in visual and performing arts, and credits his time at SU with cultivating his interest in acting, writing and directing.

“Since I was already shooting short films and developing my visual style thanks to watching ‘Evil Dead 2,’ ‘Goodfellas’ and ‘Raising Arizona’ way too many times as a kid... [Studying] film drama seemed to be the right choice," he told syracuse.com in 2013.

ACC is starting the year very weak at QB. A lot of turnover and other than TL and the guy at UVA not much in established starters returning. BC and Wake, big blah.

I think Tommy is quickly seen at the 3rd best QB in the league.

Not totally unrelated...

...BTW, the 2 Syracuse losses were (a) both to LSU, and (b) both BEFORE Dino Babers arrived.
