Welcome to National Corn Fritter Day!
Corn fritters, a popular fried food, are celebrated today. There is some debate on exactly what fritters consist of, but one thing is certain, they are fried, either in a pan or in a deep fryer. In fact, their name is derived from the Latin word "frictura," which means "a fry." That word was derived from "frigere," which means "to fry". In general, a fritter has a batter or breading, and usually has fillings such as meat, seafood, vegetables, or fruit, although fillings are not absolutely necessary for it to be considered a fritter. Today we specifically celebrate corn fritters.
Corn fritters are sweet and savory, and are made with corn kernels (often whole canned corn), flour, milk, eggs, and melted butter. They are often served with fruit, jam, cream, or honey. Sometimes they are also made with creamed corn, and then baked and served with maple syrup. They were likely invented in the Southern United States, where they are popular like other fried foods, such as fried chicken. Their roots are in Native American cuisine: Native Americans ate many types of corn products in the Pre-Columbian era, although they didn't do any deep frying. Corn fritters were likely invented sometime after the Europeans arrived.

Watch: Syracuse long-snapper Aaron Bolinsky crushes Bottle Cap Challenge viral video (PS; Carlson)
The Bottle Cap Challenge is this month’s viral video craze, pitting celebrities, athletes, Otto the Orange and regular old social media users against each other in a competition to create the most unique and impressive way to spin a bottle cap off a bottle.
Syracuse long-snapper Aaron Bolinsky contributed his version over the weekend, showing just how precise he can be. Bolinsky’s perfect snap nicked only the cap and left the rest of the bottle perfectly intact.
Incoming Syracuse long-snapper Michael Midkiff, who will be a preferred walk-on this year, offered his version as well.
Bolinsky was part of an impressive Syracuse special teams unit last season. He replaced injured long-snapper Matt Keller midway through the season and was part of punting and kicking units that were likely the best in the ACC.
Kicker Andre Szmyt won the Lou Groza Award as the country’s top placekicker, while punter Sterling Hofrichter was All-ACC First Team.

Syracuse Football: Orange hoping to land 2020 No. 1 WR, Bryce Gowdy (itlh; Carey)
Syracuse football has done great work in the 2020 class, but they still have its eyes on another prospect. Here are the full details and what’s next.
Bryce Gowdy a 6-foot 2 205-pound wide receiver from Florida will be making his college decision later on this month. Gowdy is from Deerfield Beach, Florida and attends football powerhouse, Deerfield Beach High School.
Gowdy has trimmed his list of schools to just five heading into his commitment on July 30: Syracuse, Georgia Tech, Penn State, Oregon, and West Virginia are all vying for his services.
In addition to that impressive top five, Gowdy also holds offers from the likes of Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Nebraska, among others.
According to 247sports.com, Gowdy is a 4-star prospect and the 307th best player in the country (using their composite ranking). Gowdy took official visits to Georgia Tech on May 25th, West Virginia on June 14th, and Syracuse on June 20th.
The Orange and defensive backs coach, Nick Monroe, were the first to offer Gowdy a scholarship back in 2017. Since then, he has been interested in Syracuse and kept in touch with the coaching staff the entire time.

Former Syracuse center Pat Killorin cleared the way for some of program’s glory days (PS; Kramer)
Back in the days that Pat Killorin played center for Syracuse, the ball usually ended up in the hands of running backs Floyd Little, Larry Csonka or Jim Nance.
That was understandable. That trio was among the greatest to play for any college team anywhere, at any time.
They often got where they were going in large part because of the road-grading efforts of Killorin. As befitting his position most of the glory diverted around the Watertown native, though that was alright with him. Killorin was versed in one undeniable fact that put him into the hub of the action.
“It’s a real privilege because basically I got my hands on the ball every play. I can say that,” Killorin said Monday. “You’re part of a team. I’ve always believed that. Football is a two-thing sport. It’s a team and it’s a family. Football’s like a brotherhood. Whatever you’re doing, you’re doing as a part of a team.”
Monday, Killorin got an individual honor he so clearly earned when he was named part of the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame’s 2019 class. It was another tribute for a man who anchored offensive lines for Ben Schwartzwalder-coached teams in 1963-65. Those teams won 22 of 31 games and went 13-2 in Archbold Stadium. Killorin was a two-time first team All-American.
And even decades later, Killorin, 75, still gets to walk stride for stride with Little. The ex-Denver Broncos great and NFL Hall of Famer was also tabbed for this year’s class.
“I’ll tell you what. It couldn’t have been any better," Killorin said of going in with Little. “He’s one of the finest people I’ve ever known in my life. To me he’s an example of a person that I want myself and all my family to be like.”

Several Syracuse football players were featured on the Bednarik Award watch list. Here’s why a SU player will win it for the 1st time in program history.
Syracuse football made history in 2018 and they have another opportunity to do it again in 2019.
On Monday afternoon the Maxwell Football Club released the preseason watch list for the Bednarik Award and two Syracuse football players were featured on the list:
- Andre Cisco, sophomore, defensive back.
- Alton Robinson, senior, defensive end.
In 2019 one of these two will bring the hardware back to Syracuse University.
Andre Cisco registered seven interceptions in his freshman season which was good enough to lead the nation.

The media will get an easy chance to bump up its “winning percentage” at the ACC kickoff in Charlotte this week when it fills out its preseason predictions for the Atlantic Division.
Clemson, which has won the division four years in a row, should be the unanimous choice. What happens after the Tigers is up for debate.
One guess at the predicted order of finish:
1. CLEMSON
Coach: Dabo Swinney, 12th season (116-30 overall)
2018: 15-0, 8-0 ACC; ACC champions, national champions
S&P+ rankings: offense (5), defense (3)
Key games: Texas A&M (Sept. 7), at Syracuse (Sept. 14)

They’re back: QB Trevor Lawrence, RB Travis Etienne
Clemson played exactly one ACC game last year that was decided by single digits (a 27-23 home win over Syracuse) and that was when quarterback Trevor Lawrence was injured.
With Lawrence settled in after starting the season in a rotation with Kelly Bryant, the Tigers beat Wake Forest by 60, N.C. State by 34, FSU by 49 and Louisville by 61 before throttling it back in a 20-point win at Boston College and a 29-point home win over Duke.
Clemson’s point differential, in seven ACC games with Lawrence as the starter, was plus-285. That’s fairly ridiculous. You’re certainly welcome to argue, “Yeah, but that was against the ACC,” but that doesn’t really explain a 27-point win over Notre Dame or a 28-point win over Alabama in the playoffs.
Lawrence (30 TDs, 4 INTs), only a sophomore, is a generational supernova. Like Joe Montana in his prime, it’s unfair that Lawrence is surrounded by such a talented cast. With defenses focused on Lawrence, running back Travis Etienne put up huge numbers (8.8 yards per carry, 1,658 yards) and will again. Justyn Ross had 1,000 receiving yards despite catching three passes or fewer in 10 games.
Even with a new cast up front on defense, don’t expect the Tigers to fall back too much from the No. 1 scoring unit in the country.
ACC coaches (and Nick Saban) are counting the days until Lawrence goes pro, which can’t happen until after the 2020 season at the earliest. The best plan for the rest of the ACC is to load up and prepare for 2021.
2. SYRACUSE
Coach: Dino Babers, fourth season 18-19 (55-35 overall)
2018: 10-3, 6-2 ACC
S&P+ rankings: offense (44), defense (60)
Key games: at N.C. State (Oct. 10), at Florida State (Oct. 26)
They’re gone: QB Eric Dungey, WR Jamal Custis
They’re back: DE Alton Robinson, RB Moe Neal
Syracuse’s jump from 4-8 to 10-3 was not rocket science. The Orange scored more points last season (40.2 points per game, up from 27.4 in 2017) and gave up fewer points (27.0 ppg, compared to 32.2 in 2017).
Many of the same parts on the improved defense, led by senior defensive ends Alton Robinson and Kendall Coleman, are still in place. That’s the good news for coach Dino Babers.
There’s a good chunk of the offense returning from last year’s group, too. There’s a plug-and-play element to Babers’ offense at receiver but Sean Riley and Nykeim Johnson are effective options in the slot.
The big question is how will quarterback Tommy DeVito handle going from safety net to featured role? DeVito had some moments in relief of Eric Dungey last season, notably in an overtime win over UNC.
Dungey’s running ability (he ran for 15 touchdowns) was a key element to Syracuse’s success. The Orange won’t have that option with DeVito, a pocket-passer.
Still, as long as the defense stays on track, Syracuse’s schedule sets up for a quick start and another second-place finish in the division.

Football season officially starts next month with Syracuse!! They ended the season ranked 15th. This game will also be the LU coaching debut of Hugh Freeze. Should be an amazing atmosphere at Williams Stadium

Let's not be too impressed with SU last season and preseason rankings. Most of the teams they beat had loosing records and were in re-building seasons. SU lost their leading rusher in QB Eric Dungey and their run defense has gotten worse. They're also pretty shallow in their o-line depth chart, weak secondary with no SS and are making due with pretty much one QB. I'm from the SU area and their is much concern regarding the season outlook. A big win by Liberty would pretty much confirm all SU fan base fears about the team. Not to mention that Liberty is a much improved team with a great coach edition HCHF. This win by Liberty would set the season off right for Liberty and wrong for SU!

This really is a potential statement game for Liberty. The debut of Hugh Freeze, the first game of year two in FBS, potential ESPN game, and a rocking house potentially if the weather is better than ODU last year...if we win this one, as long as we don't pull a "typical Liberty", it could catapult us into a real special season

If we were to play SU 100 times we might win one. I would love to see us do it, but let's be realistic. New coach, new system, new players, etc. I will be at the game, hoping for the best and excited to see the energy of a big game atmosphere on the mountain.

One of these seasons a challenger will rise up from the scrum of ACC mediocrity to give Clemson a decent fight that isn’t a fluke.
When?
Looks like 2020 or later.
Which program?
Harder to tell.
1. Florida State. Because there is still a lot of Tallahassee talent.
2. Miami. New head coach Manny Diaz is off to a good off-season start. Then again, we said that about Mark Richt and Al Golden.
3. Virginia Tech. Or a hotter seat for Justin Fuente.
4. N.C. State. So close, yet so far away.
5. North Carolina. Always such potential, and presently more than the 2-9 record of 2018 indicates.
And other big questions heading into the annual ACC Football Kickoff event set for Wednesday and Thursday in Charlotte (in predicted order of finish):

Can the Tigers effectively address their only 2018 weakness, punting and (to a lesser extent) kicking? Will it matter until late December? Will Travis Etienne and Trevor Lawrence both get to New York for the Heisman Trophy ceremony?

Can head coach Willie Taggart get his guys to ignore a harsh Seminole wind that comes with a 5-7 season, whining fans and lots of empty seats?
Boston College
Can running back AJ Dillon team with a group that includes redshirt freshman running back Javian Dayne (son of former Heisman winner Ron Dayne of Wisconsin) to form one of college football’s best power running committees?
Syracuse
Was almost knocking Clemson out of the College Football Playoff in 2018 the high-water mark for Dino Babers’ Orange? Or will a defensive line led by Alton Robinson and Kendall Coleman rattle quarterbacks while the offense comes along?

- Disney and Charter are currently negotiating a new carriage renewal deal, which has a deadline in early August.
- Talks that used to revolve around how much programming fees should rise now also revolve around how the introduction of direct-to-consumer services impact the value of linear networks.
- Charter and Disney are talking about what type of flexibility Disney will have with taking certain events from ESPN and also placing them on ESPN+.

‘Dangerously high’ heat index could top 100 in Upstate NY (PS; Coin)
Brutal heat is headed for Upstate New York, making the air feel like 100 degrees or more by the weekend.
Heat and humidity will build throughout the week, with the hottest days coming Friday and Saturday.
“Dangerously high apparent temperatures are expected on Saturday,” the National Weather Service said. Apparent temperature refers to the heat index, the combination of air temperature and humidity that makes the air feel hotter to human skin.
In some parts of Central New York, the heat index could near 110 degrees, the weather service said.
The heat begins today, with temperatures near 90 in some parts of Upstate New York. After a slightly cooler day Wednesday, thanks to clouds from the remnants of tropical storm Barry that could bring heavy rain, the heat begins to build on Thursday, with temperatures getting into the high 80s.
Record-breaking heat is possible beginning Friday, when temperatures are expected to rise into the mid 90s. Syracuse is forecast to be 94 on Friday and Saturday; the record for both July 18 and 19 is 97 degrees.
That’s just the temperature. The humidity will also be high, with dew points of 70 degrees or higher. The weather service considers any dew point above 65 to be “oppressive.” Dew point is the temperature at which water in the air condenses; the higher the dew point, the more humid the air.
Sunday will be a few degrees cooler, but there probably won’t be any real relief from the heat until next Tuesday.
As is typical with hot, humid weather, thunderstorms are possible starting today and through the weekend. Wednesday’s rain could be heavy as the remnants of Barry make their way into Upstate New York. There’s a 10 to 20% chance of rain heavy enough to cause flash flooding in the southern half of Upstate New York, according to the Weather Prediction Center, an arm of the weather service.
