Welcome to Yada Yada Yada Day!

On April 17, 2015, Michael W. Casby saw there was a Blah, Blah, Blah Day. He then tweeted at Checkiday, declaring July 23 as Yada, Yada, Yada Day. He also created Facebook and Twitter pages for the day. Casby said that the Seinfeld episode "The Yada Yada" was "part of the creative inspiration for the establishment of the day." "The Yada Yada" was the 153rd episode in the series and aired on April 24, 1997. It soon became one of the most popular Seinfeld episodes.

The phrase "yada, yada, yada"—which means "so on and so forth," or "blah, blah, blah"—was used in the episode. It is a phrase that had been in use before, but the episode increased its popularity. It had previously been used by comedian Lenny Bruce in the 1950s and 1960s, and by other television shows in the 1980s and 1990s. Yada, Yada, Yada Day gained in popularity on the internet after its creation. Eventually, Jerry Seinfeld himself referenced the day, when he released an episode of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, on the holiday in 2017.

Syracuse football was picked to finish second in the ACC Atlantic Division by voting members of the media covering the conference.

It's the highest Syracuse has been ranked in the preseason order of finish since starting ACC play in 2013.
The previous high was fourth in 2014, when the Orange was coming off a 7-6 record and a victory in the Texas Bowl.

Here is how ACC media sees the conference shaking out this season, as well as its prediction for the ACC championship game.

ACC ATLANTIC
1. CLEMSON
The Tigers have won the division each of the past four seasons and are the runaway favorite to do it a fifth-straight time, racking up 171 of 173 first-place votes.
Clemson has a stacked offense led by Heisman Trophy candidate Trevor Lawrence at quarterback.

2. SYRACUSE
The Orange is coming off its first 10-win season since 2001 and returns the bulk of a defensive line that was among the most disruptive in the nation a year ago.
Add a deep, experienced secondary, and it's no wonder coach Dino Babers called the defense the strength of his team heading into fall camp.
Two voters picked Syracuse to win the ACC.

3. FLORIDA STATE
The only other time Florida State was picked to finish outside the top two in the division was in 2008, when it was picked to finish third.
FSU bolstered its quarterback depth by adding Wisconsin graduate transfer Alex Hornibrook, and new offensive coordinator Kendal Briles will bring many of the offensive principles to Tallahassee that Babers has installed at Syracuse.

https://www.syracuse.com/orangebasketball/2019/07/syracuse-university-will-use-one-of-the-biggest-cranes-in-the-us-to-build-carrier-dome-roof.html (PS; Carlson)

Syracuse’s new Carrier Dome roof will require the university to use one of the country’s biggest cranes, stationing it on campus through January.

Syracuse Vice President and Chief Facilities Officer Pete Sala said the crane’s boom will be more than 500 feet long, more than four times the current height of the Carrier Dome. He said the current roof rises approximately 120 feet into the air.

Jim Jatho, a heavy lift and rigging planner with Buckner Heavylift Cranes, said the main boom on the LR-1100 crane measures 217 feet. An attached jib measures 295 feet.

“It’s going to dominate the skyline,” Jatho said. “If you can see the Carrier Dome, it’ll be a couple hundred feet above it.”

By the time the crane is completely built, it will have taken between 85 and 87 truck loads to bring all of the pieces to Syracuse. Manufactured by Liebherr, a German crane company, it will weigh approximately 1,100 tons. It will take multiple weeks, and the power of multiple other cranes, just to build the LR-1100.

The massive crane will be key to erecting the crown-truss that will eventually support the Carrier Dome’s new roof. Sala said he expects the crown-truss to be completed by January.

Syracuse is renting the equipment from Buckner Heavylift Cranes, a company located in North Carolina. Buckner will have a supervisor in Syracuse to oversee its use.

“Putting that one crane together is going to take three or four other cranes,” Sala said. “It’s one of the biggest cranes in the United States. ... There’s a crane ... on the other side of the building. That is a massive, massive crane as well. We’ve kind of downplayed that one. To see a crane that big put another crane together is pretty funny."

Construction finally underway for $118M facelift to Carrier Dome (cnycentral.com; video; Haiswirth)

It's perhaps the biggest construction project the City of Syracuse has seen in several years.

The $118 million renovations to the Carrier Dome is finally underway after two years of detailed planning.

Syracuse University, along with neighboring school SUNY ESF and the city itself, have been hard at work making sure the project goes off without a hitch this summer.

As far as SU's Chief Facilities Officer Pete Sala is concerned, the project is on-time and fully prepared to move forward.

The first visible evidence of construction began in recent days, as workers were using cranes and lifts to assemble the first phase of the steel installation.

Monday's work is called 'ex-bracing', and the construction workers will install the steel beams in all four corners of the Carrier Dome.

The steel beams being installed are in place to take away the strain and force ahead of when the crown truss [the new roof] gets put into place.

The numbers regarding the project are astronomical, in terms of height and amount of loads of the crane being equipped to install the new roof.

Item: The ACC Monday released the annual preseason media poll of the predicted order of finish, and the school receiving the most votes after defending national champion Clemson being the Orange. What does it mean? Recognition of the fact that the program has arrived in the ACC in year seven of membership, the express lane pace engineered by Dino Babers’ master plan which requires recruiting players to his exact specifications.

It was certainly no surprise that Syracuse was finished to pick second in the Atlantic Division behind the big bad Tigers, who recruit as well as anybody with facilities that are similarly top-notch, by 290 total points among the 170 media members voting, the ‘Cuse even receiving two first place votes, and the following order of Florida State, N.C. State, B.C. Wake Forest and Louisville was our logical choice as well.

It’s the Coastal Division that is totally unpredictable, with all seven team receiving at least one first-place vote, topped by Virginia, then Miami, Va. Tech, Pitt, Duke, N. Carolina, and Ga. Tech. We think Virginia is ready to break through the pack although it is simply an educated guess, but we do not think Ga. Tech will not finish last under new coach Geoff Collins.

» Related: Syracuse QB Tommy DeVito: ‘We haven’t reached our full potential yet’

As for the Orange, senior defensive lineman Kendall Coleman and his returning 32 tackles (23 solo) last season, including 12 for a loss, echoed the mantra Babers has preached with the accompanying attention to winning as he explained pleasantries with the media in Charlotte last week at the league’s season kickoff event.

“Clemson’s a great team, they’re at the top right now, that’s undisputed,” Coleman succinctly told a hefty crowd around his interview table. “We put together one season of work that displayed we were good enough to come (in) second to them,” he continued. “But one season doesn’t define everything. We’ve got to go out there and establish ourselves as a consistent team that can do this all the time.”

In addition to the Orange’s meaty preseason predicted spot in the standings, no less than five SU players have been named to the watch lists for awards at their respective positions and/or have garnered national media preseason first-team All-American recognition, something that would have been unimaginable only five short seasons ago.

https://accnation.net/syracuse-football-questions-that-must-be-answered/ (accnation.net; Ojanen)

We know two things about the ACC Atlantic this year. First, that Clemson will be the unanimous favorite to win the division. Second, Louisville will be last. In the middle of that division is a huge question mark. A lot of talk surrounds Syracuse football as the second place team in the Atlantic this year. In fact, the results from ACC Media Day released this morning echoes this sentiment.

But, Syracuse’s win totals by betting sites have been all over the place. From as few as five wins to as many as nine. Why is that? Here are a couple of reasons from where I sit.

The Quarterback Situation
People are high on Tommy DeVito. He’s stepping into some big shoes as the replacement for Eric Dungey. He has a bit of experience playing last season and there is plenty of hype surrounding him.

He’s also a career 50% completion passer. There’s nothing here to lead me to believe he is ‘the guy’. At least, not yet. His most significant action from last season wasn’t overwhelming statistically. DeVito went 14 for 31 in their game against Notre Dame.

Turnovers
There is absolutely no doubt that Syracuse football benefited greatly from turnovers last season. The defense forced an ACC high of 31 last year. Trends, however, are not in their favor to repeat that performance this year.

Every team that has led the league in turnovers since 2011 has experienced a drop off the next season. Sometimes it’s small, as in 4 and then there’s the rock bottom collapse of 17.

Are You Listening To ACC Nation Radio?

This is also a team that gave up 427 yards per game on defense. That’s 10th in the ACC and 88th nationally. At the very least, these stats should lead you, like it has me, to believe that there will be some drop off this season defensively. It may be a bit of a pipe dream to believe otherwise.

Syracuse Football
There’s no doubt Dino Babers is building a quality program at Syracuse. Frankly, I’m a fan of what he’s done and is doing with the team. But, to say they are the consensus second best team in the Atlantic?

With these aforementioned stats and perhaps a bit of common sense is it any wonder that people think they will be a borderline bowl team this season?

The Boston College football team on Monday was selected to finish fifth in the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Atlantic Division, as voted by the 173 media members present at the ACC’s Kickoff event last week in Charlotte, N.C.

The Eagles garnered 588 points to finish ahead of Wake Forest (462) and Louisville (253) in the division ballot.

To no one’s surprise, Clemson, the reigning national champion, received all but three first-place votes overall, garnering 170 as the likely pick to win the ACC conference championship ahead of division rival Syracuse (two first-place votes) and Coastal Division favorite Virginia (one first-place vote).

The Tigers, the runaway favorite to win the Atlantic Division, garnered 171 first-place votes and 1,209 points in the division preseason ballot while Syracuse finished second with 913 points.

In addition to Clemson and Syracuse, BC was predicted to finish behind third-place Florida State (753 points) and fourth-place North Carolina State (666) in the Atlantic Division.

The Eagles will travel to Clemson Oct. 26 and Syracuse Nov. 2 on back-to-back weekend road trips in what will be BC’s toughest stretch of the season. Those conference road games will be bookended by home games against North Carolina State (Oct. 19) and Florida State (Nov. 9).

You know that old saying: “No. 2 tries harder.’’

Perhaps it will prove true for the Miami Hurricanes, who will likely not only try harder, but maybe make that effort pay off with an ultimate Atlantic Coast Conference Coastal Division title.

For the first time in three years, the ACC media did not project the Hurricanes to win the 2019 Coastal Division title.

Miami was predicted to finish second, followed by Virginia Tech, Pitt, Duke, North Carolina and Georgia Tech.

The Atlantic Division was projected to be led by defending national champion Clemson, followed by Syracuse, Florida State, NC State, Boston College, Wake Forest and Louisville.

Clemson was projected to beat Virginia in the ACC title game by a landslide. The Tigers, who finished 15-0 in 2018 after pummeling Alabama in the national title game, got 170 of 173 votes to win the conference championship. Syracuse got two votes and Virginia, one.

The football season will be before we know it. With camps about to start back up, everyone is excited to fill their weekends back with action on the gridiron. For Wake Forest and the other teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference, the ACC can boast as the Clemson Tigers enter the season as the defending national champions, along with being the favorite to repeat.

Barring some unforeseeable circumstances, Clemson will again be the team to beat. After a 15-0 season, capped off with a national championship, and returning perhaps the favorite for the Heisman Trophy, QB Trevor Lawrence, the Tigers will be a force to be reckoned with. However, after Clemson, there is room for competition as teams will jockey for position within the Coastal and Atlantic (after Clemson) Divisions.

ACC Coastal
The Coastal is no stranger to parity. Last season, no team in the division had more than eight total wins. As the in-depth preview from ESPN commentary points out (which you can find here), this division is marked with unpredictability.

The Miami Hurricanes are the favorite here with their talent level but questions at quarterback, even with QB Tate Martell getting approval to not sit out a year after transferring from Ohio State, makes the offense hard to picture.

Virginia Tech seems to be a contender for the Coastal as well with their suffocating defense. The Hokies offense has traditionally been the weaker side of the ball but should be strong with returning partial starter Ryan Willis.

https://balldurham.com/2019/07/22/media-torn-duke-football-will-finish-acc-coastal/ (balldurham.com; Connelly)

Members of the ACC Media are torn on where the Duke Football team will finish this year in the ACC Coastal Division.
Many thought this would be a rebuilding year for the Duke Football team, but the ACC released its media poll on Monday afternoon and things seem to be up in the air for the Coastal Division.

The Duke Blue Devils received six first place votes to come in first in the Costal and 566 overall, which puts them at No. 6 in the pre-season media rankings.

Every team in the Coastal received at least one first place vote, Virginia getting the most with 82 and North Carolina and Georgia Tech getting the least with one each.

The Miami Hurricanes, Virginia Tech Hokies, and Pittsburgh Panthers all come in ahead of the Blue Devils and below the Cavaliers.

Miami has 55 first place votes, while Virginia Tech has 20, and Pittsburgh with eight.

As many would expect, the Atlantic Division was a runaway, but the Clemson Tigers were not a unanimous selection to win the division, the Syracuse Orange received two first place votes, while the defending National Champions took in the other 171.

Duke is coming off of an 8-5 season, but going just 3-5 in ACC play. However, the season was capped off with a victory over Temple in the Walk-On’s Independence Bowl.

The Blue Devils loose a lot of talent on both sides of the ball heading into the 2019-20 season, but perhaps most importantly, Duke must replace its starting quarterback, Daniel Jones, who was the No. 6 overall pick in of the New York Giants in the NFL Draft.

Luckily for Duke, head coach David Cutcliffe will turn to an experienced veteran in Quentin Harris who started two games last season replacing Jones who was down with an injury.

Things won’t be easy for the Blue Devils as they will play two National Championship contenders, Alabama on August 31 in the season opener and Notre Dame at Wallace Wade Stadium on November 9.

for gbo

My, how things have changed in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The biggest takeaway from Monday’s preseason media poll wasn’t that Clemson was a runaway favorite to win its fifth consecutive league title, but rather that Syracuse was acknowledged as the biggest threat to the Tigers’ dominance.

Have the Orange supplanted the Seminoles as Clemson’s primary challenger? Apparently.

Syracuse received the other two first-place votes in the Atlantic Division, which would have been unfathomable just a few short years ago, but shouldn’t be all that surprising given recent history.

Four of the past five games between Clemson and Syracuse have been decided by 10 points or less and the most recent two have been downright nail-biters. Syracuse – the last team to defeat Clemson, by the way – stunned the Tigers at the Carrier Dome 27-24 in 2017; last season Clemson escaped Death Valley with a 27-23 victory that required plenty of late-game heroics, including a fourth-down conversion by back-up quarterback Chase Brice and key sack by freshman defensive end Xavier Thomas in the final minute.

This year’s game has the potential to follow suit for multiple reasons. Among them:

► Syracuse isn’t intimidated by Clemson, as it has proven the past two years. The Orange return 13 starters from a team that capped its first 10-win season in 17 years with a 34-18 win against West Virginia in the Camping World Bowl.

► Syracuse's Dino Babers is a good coach. Dino loves Dabo and Dabo loves Dino, and that mutual respect was evident a couple of years ago when Dabo strolled unannounced into the Syracuse locker room to congratulate the team on its upset victory.

Clemson football is 34-2 versus its ACC rivals over the past four years. To match Florida State’s 1992-2000 ownership of the league, all the Tigers need to do is win their next 36 conference games.

Yes, FSU went 70-2 against its ACC brethren in its first nine seasons as a member, falling only at Virginia in 1995 and North Carolina State in 1998. The league was smaller then — nine programs instead of today’s 14 — but still produced 26 end-of-year ranked teams during the Seminoles’ run, an average of nearly three per season.

Florida State’s dynasty — the Seminoles finished among the Associated Press’ top five every year from 1987-2000 and won the 1993 and ’99 national championships — was invaluable to the ACC. Bobby Bowden’s program enhanced the league’s bowl partnerships, generated more television revenue and motiva

For a guy who has never played or coached in the Atlantic Coast Conference, first-year Louisville football coach Scott Satterfield won’t need a crash course in league history.

Satterfield grew up in Durham, where he played little league ball and sold programs at Duke football games.
“We had to sell 10 programs to get in free,” Satterfield said. “We had a concession stand inside of Wallace Wade [Stadium]. So, I grew up going to all the Duke football games.

“This was back when [Steve] Spurrier was the [offensive coordinator]. It was a long time ago. I liked NFL football, too. I liked Randall Cunningham, John Elway — some of the guys who could run and throw.”
For college, Satterfield went to Appalachian State as a non-scholarship player and was an All-Southern Conference choice as a senior, when he had 2,000 yards in total offense, including 649 on the ground, for a team that went 11-0 in the regular season.

“I didn’t really know anything about App State when I went there,” he said of his college choice. “They called and asked me to walk on and, next thing you know, I’d been there 23 years.”

Satterfield’s parents live 14 miles from Durham in Hillsborough, N.C., and while Louisville is in the ACC’s Atlantic Division and won’t be facing Duke, which is in the Coastal Division, the Cardinals will be visiting Wake Forest and N.C. State.

ACC media believes it will be a rough year for Louisville football (bigredlouie.com; Lane)

Louisville football will enter a new era under Scott Satterfield with hopes of a bright future, but the ACC media doesn’t have much faith in a quick turnaround for 2019.

The 2019 edition of the ACC Kick-Off has come and gone, and the voting results have found their way to the public as of this morning. To no one’s surprise, Clemson sits atop as king once again in the ACC Coastal, while our beloved Louisville football was picked to finish where they ultimately ended up last season – dead last.

It should come as no surprise to any of us, regardless of how we feel or think the season may play out that the new look Louisville Cardinal football program under the tutelage of Scott Satterfield was picked to finish last, receiving an ACC low 253 total points.

The next lowest points received were by Georgia Tech (302) and Wake Forest (462), who were picked to finish last in the Coastal and second to last in the Atlantic respectively.

Only two programs received first-place votes in the Atlantic, with Clemson receiving 171 and Syracuse receiving two.

On the Coastal side of the things, Louisville’s week nine opponent Virginia received 82 total first-place votes, which would give Bronco Mendenhall his first title since coming over from BYU, with Miami (55), Virginia Tech (20), and Pittsburgh (8) closing out the top four.

Eliminating Protected Crossovers
ACC crossover pairs
This post was inspired by a YouTube video from College Football Chronicle:

Why Alabama and Auburn Should Move to SEC East

Alabama and Auburn are currently in the SEC West but they shouldn't be. In this video, I'll talk about why I think the Tigers and Crimson Tide should move to the SEC East and realign the SEC divisions to make way for a more balanced 8-game or 9-game SEC schedule.

Dustin's point is that if Alabama and Auburn both moved to the SEC East (in exchange for Missouri and Vanderbilt to the West) there would no longer be a need for protected crossover games(Alabama/Tennessee and Auburn/Georgia being the only really important ones anyway), thus freeing up the SEC to play 2 rotating cross-division games every year (or, if they went with a 9-game conference schedule, 3 rotating games).

The question: is there any way to divide the ACC so that you could do the same thing?

At first, you might be tempted to go with a North/South split. That would result in something like this:

NorthSouth
SyracuseDuke
Boston CollegeUNC
PittNC State
LouisvilleClemson
VirginiaGa Tech
Va TechFlorida St
Wake ForestMiami

Two obvious problems jump out which I've highlighted in bold: Virginia and Wake Forest are isolated from their biggest rivals, UNC and NC State.

You can fix one of those by putting Miami in the North, where the Canes have lots of traditional rivals. However, that doesn't address the root cause - and the reason why no true North/South split works in the ACC - is because there are simply more teams in the South (and those teams are tightly bound to each other). Besides, isn't geographic isolation one of the reasons Miami left the Big East to join the ACC in the first place?

So next you'll probably want to try an Original vs. Expansion team split, like this:

OriginalExpansion
ClemsonBoston College
DukeFlorida St
Ga TechLouisville
NC StateMiami

2019: living rent-free in SEC heads

If you're unfortunate enough to have to rent a home or an apartment in one of the thriving cities in the ACC footprint, no doubt you're shocked by how much rent has gone up in the past year or so... However, there's one place where ACC fans - and especially those who call Clemson their team - can live rent-free this off-season: in the heads of SEC fans!

One fan on Tigernet had this to say about it:
Looks like the entire SEC has come down with Jake Bentley derangement syndrome... after leading his team to a 56-7 loss Bentley says “everyone could see they weren’t that much better than us”. Now after giving up 44 points in loss to the Tigers a BAMA LB “says they weren’t that physical”....
The Tigers went 3-0 last year against the SEC (A&M, U5Cjr, BAMA), besting them by an average score of 42-25.... The SEC just doesn’t have Clemson speed

Which is likely referring to this quote from South Carolina QB Jake Bentley on Saturday Down South.

The company will spend $20 million on upgrades to its movie theaters at Destiny, Crossgates Mall near Albany and Walden Galleria near Buffalo, according to Syracuse-based Pyramid, which owns all three properties. The work will include new seating, cafés with new food and drink offerings and new screens.

Destiny and Crossgates will both get the following upgrades:

  • Full renovations of lobbies and auditoriums
  • New café and coffee shop from Lavazza
  • New smoothie bar by B.fresh
  • 4DX Cinema Experience: The upgrade adds multiple special effects to the in-theater experience, including motion-synchronized seats, wind, fog, rain, lightning, snow, bubbles, vibrations and scents.
  • ScreenX Cinema Experience: The upgrade will extend the screen to the auditorium walls to create 270-degree panoramic views surrounding the audience.
  • Restroom upgrades
  • Corridor upgrades
  • New LED signs throughout the venue
  • New seating in all auditoriums, including VIP sections with luxury recliners

The Regal location at Walden will get the 4DX upgrade.

With these aforementioned stats and perhaps a bit of common sense is it any wonder that people think they will be a borderline bowl team this season?

That sentence stuck out to me, too. It could be interpreted as all people think that way, or at least many people think so. Much more accurate would be some people. (And, in my biased opinion, that some would be very few.)
