Welcome to National Mutt Day!

National Mutt Day celebrates mixed breed dogs, and was created by Colleen Paige, a pet and family lifestyle expert and animal advocate, who also created days such as National Dog Day, National Puppy Day, and National Cat Day. The goal of the day is to embrace, save, and celebrate mixed breed dogs by creating awareness about the great numbers of them in animal shelters that are in need of a home. Mixed breed dogs make up the largest percentage of dogs that are abandoned and euthanized, and make up about 80% of dogs in shelters. In an effort to further raise awareness, National Mutt Day takes place on two days during the year. The hoped for result of the day is that people visit animal shelters and adopt a mixed breed dog, or possibly donate their time and money to shelters.

SU News

https://sujuiceonline.com/2019/07/31/dino-babers-has-changed-perception-of-syracuse-football/ (the juice; McGlynn)

Football season is almost finally upon us and Syracuse enters the year with its highest expectations in over a decade.

Win projections for the Orange are all over the map. There is certainly a target on the back of the program following its first winning season since 2013.

One thing is clear though, a 6-6 season would be nothing but a disappointment. The fact the expectations are raised is a credit to the job Dino Babers has done in revitalizing the team.
In addition to the high hopes that follow SU around, there is a sense of a much higher floor. From 2014 to 2017, Syracuse did not win more than four games.

For the first time since Doug Marrone was the head coach, there is an expectation for the Orange to finish the season with a winning record. 6-6 being a disappointment is a good thing. It shows how much Babers has shifted the perception of the team.

And he deserves that kind of credit. This is solidly his team now. Only a few players remain from the Scott Schafer era and the key playmakers across the board are Babers recruits, whether it was out of high school or as transfer targets.

Only Christopher Fredrick, Andrejas Duerig, Jake Pickard, Evan Adams and Sterling Hofrickter remain of players recruited who entered the season with Shafer as the head coach. Babers took over at the end of 2015, meaning the 2016 class all knew with plenty of time that he was going to be the head coach.

This team is all Babers’ and has his fingerprints all over it.

Some of the new perception, or perhaps just the return to what Syracuse football used to be perceived as, comes from Babers’ leadership. He wears his heart on his sleeve. Something players have come to respect.

Syracuse Football: 4-star WR Bryce Gowdy skips out on Orange (itlh; Esden Jr)

Syracuse football just snagged their biggest recruit of the offseason in 4-star WR Bryce Gowdy. Here are all the details and what this means.

The Syracuse football squad has done a very nice job on the recruiting field, but the Orange were hoping to land a supreme star in 2020 4-star wide receiver Bryce Gowdy, but sadly the Orange just missed out on what would’ve been Syracuse’s best recruit of the 2020 class.
Bryce revealed on social media that he’ll be making his decision on Instagram at 6:00 p.m., but the decision was delayed.

His “Skaye Bryce” account went live around 6:45 p.m. with a Syracuse football hat sitting on the dashboard of his car, the only hat that was seen in the vehicle and he grabbed it, what appeared to be a sneak peek of the night, resulted in utter disappointment for Orange fans.
He officially made his announcement at a local sports bar and it was streamed on his Instagram account.

https://insidetheloudhouse.com/2019/07/30/tale-of-the-tape-canadian-pipeline-pays-off-for-orange-again/ (itlh; Carey)

The Syracuse football squad went back to the Canadian pipeline and it paid off. Here are all the details and who is coming to the Orange.
Syracuse football notched their 12th and 13th commits in the class of 2020 this past weekend. It all got started on Saturday, with Ben Labrosse. Labrosse is a defensive back from Montreal, Quebec and attends Vanier College in Canada.
Labrosse was on the Syracuse Campus this past weekend, attending Dino Babers’final summer camp. Apparently, he impressed, as Labrosse was offered a scholarship, which he gave a verbal commit to, on the spot.

At 6-foot-2 and 200-pounds, Labrosse is the ideal candidate for safety. Quite frankly, he is already bigger than some of the safeties on the Orange roster at 200 pounds. But you could see him shifted anywhere from linebacker to cornerback once he’s on campus.
Labrosse was not rated by any major recruiting services until his commitment. According to 247sports.com, he is a 3-star prospect and the 716th best player in the class of 2020. He also is rated the second-best player in Canada by Canada Football Chat, right behind Malick Meiga, another Syracuse target.
The Syracuse pipeline in Canada continues to grow. Tyrell Richards, Patrick Davis, Geoff Cantin-Arku, and Matthew Bergeron are all from the Great White North and on the Orange roster.
Credit Mike Lynch and Nick Monroe as the primary recruiters.

CuseNation.com was the first to break the news:

BREAKING: 2020 Canadian Safety Ben LaBrosse (@BenLabrosse) has committed to Syracuse after picking up an offer today at camp. Story with quote and exclusive highlights from his camp performance:

Is it really playoff or bust for the Syracuse football squad in 2019? Our Paul A. Esden Sr explains why that’s the case and why the Orange have arrived!

Read this very carefully: Syracuse football should have a “playoff or bust” mindset in 2019.
Whoa, what did you say?

I will say it again; the Quest for the Playoffs begins NOW! Orange fans we sit still in the glow of the aftermath of one of the best seasons in Orange history.
Posting a 10-3 record that perhaps only this writer saw coming. (Flashback to last year and my prediction for a 9-3 regular season was 100% accurate!)
Okay, okay as I take a minute to put ice on my arm from patting myself on the back let’s get this party started. Even as awesome as our record was last year it could’ve been even better.

https://bigredlouie.com/2019/07/30/louisville-football-brl-writers-predict-every-2019-game/ (bigredlouie.com; Meyer)

As the 2019 Louisville football season approaches, Big Red Louie writers give their game-by-game predictions and break down how they think the season will pan out.
It’s tough to remember a season that was more difficult to predict than that of a bottom-dwelling Louisville football in 2019.

After an abysmal showing in 2018, the Cards were voted dead last in the ACC conference at the ACC Kick-off by the various ACC media members.
The Cards are looking to rebound, and so are the Big Red Louie site experts. After totally buying into the Bobby Petrino hype train, Jacob (10-2) and Presley (9-3) had a hard time figuring out where the losses would come in 2018. Never have we been so wrong.
To be fair, tons of bright, intelligent football minds pegged the Cards as ACC Atlantic contenders. Still, we thought that this year it would be a great idea to include some of our contributors to get a full spectrum of opinions.
...
...
Syracuse
DJ: Syracuse has had success their program has felt in the years recently. This will be Louisville’s senior night and the energy in the crowd will be electric. However, Louisville doesn’t have the horses to compete with the up and coming with Syracuse.
Louisville 27, Syracuse 38 (3-8)
Will: The Syracuse Orange won their first game against the Cards since 2012 last season, winning in Louisville in dominant fashion, 54-23. This is the game where I see this team showing why they’re different than the 2018 version of themselves. It’s not gonna be easy, Syracuse won 10 games last season for the first time since 2001. Star QB Eric Dungey has finally graduated so they’ll have questions at the most important position on the field. I think this is the one where the Cards surprise us all.
Louisville 35, Syracuse 32 (4-7)
Alan: Louisville comes to play in this one and shows a lot of fight in between the hashes, but Syracuse begins hitting their stride, ruining the Cardinals’ chances at a bowl game appearance.
Louisville 20, Syracuse 35 (4-7)
Presley: Syracuse is building something pretty special under Dino Babers, and though it’s senior day and Louisville’s final home game, the Cards don’t match up well with the Orange. Syracuse will be as lethal as ever on offense, and their defensive line will be among the best in the ACC. The Cards have the talent to be in these type of games this year, but at this juncture, I just don’t see them putting the pieces together until 2020.
Louisville 17, Syracuse 28
Ethan: Dino Babers has done a great job at Syracuse, he has them ranked in most polls coming into the season, and they’ve even earned a couple of first place votes in the Atlantic. Eric Dungey is gone, but Syracuse still brings a lot back. Expect Louisville to lost a hard-fought game in this one.
Louisville 21, Syracuse 28 (5-6)

Our daily ACC previews continue with Duke, a team that's replacing their quarterback this season. The Blue Devils will host Syracuse on November 16th, and open up their season against Alabama on August 31st.

Which ACC school boasts the best running back units heading into the 2019 season? Clemson returns a ton of production with both Travis Etienne and Lyn-J Dixon back in the mix, but who else joins the list?

The CBS Sports college football crew breaks down their ACC predictions ahead of this season.

https://accsports.com/acc-news/football/2019-acc-football-roundtable-part-2-is-willie-taggart-on-the-hot-seat-plus-nfl-prospects-after-trevor-lawrence/ (accsports.com; Roundtable)

The 2019 college football season kicks off in a little under a month. To help gear up, the ACC Sports Journal staff decided to huddle up and look at several key ACC Football questions before things get started.
David Glenn and Josh Graham joined me for Part 1 of the 2019 ACC Football Roundtable to talk all things ACC. If you missed that, make sure to circle back. Without further ado, let’s jump back in.

4. Which ACC coach has the least amount of job security entering the season?
There was plenty of turnover in the coaching ranks after the 2018 season. Could we see more on the horizon in 2019?

David Glenn
Willie Taggart, Florida State.
Once upon a time, a college football coach was given more time to build a successful program. Did you know, for example, that Frank Beamer finished 2-8-1 in his SIXTH season at Virginia Tech? He not only retained his job after that brutal 1992 campaign, he kept it for the next 23 years, too, before retiring in 2015 as the winningest active FBS coach (280 career victories) in the entire nation.
It may seem odd to list any second-year coach as the answer to this question, but remember the extraordinary circumstances here. FSU is a football-first school with an extremely proud, highly prominent program that in Taggart’s first season finished 5-7 and missed the postseason for the first time in 36 years.

Taggart says he thinks the negativity around the program made it harder to sign all #FSU's commits in December.
— Curt Weiler (@CurtMWeiler) February 6, 2019

Some experts believe FSU will have the second-best team in the ACC this season, behind only mighty Clemson. If Taggart’s 2019 record ends up reflecting that, of course, there will be no postseason debate about his future in Tallahassee. A second straight flop, however, would raise serious questions about whether a cash-strapped university such as FSU could afford a massive (reportedly $17 million at the end of the 2019 season) buyout just two years into Taggart’s original six-year, $30 million deal.

Brian Geisinger
Justin Fuente, Virginia Tech
The ACC is in an interesting place right now when it comes to coaching. Four new head coaches enter the league this season, which translates to over 25 percent of the league bring in a new coach. That’s fairly high turnover.
Plenty of other coaches, like Dave Clawson at Wake Forest or Dave Doeren at NC State (despite turnover on his own staff this offseason), have found success and seem to be on solid footing when it comes to job security.
Doeren fell just short of cracking the 10-win ceiling in Raleigh the past two seasons, but the Pack have five straight winning seasons, five straight bowl appearances and continue to put players in the NFL. (It certainly doesn’t hurt that Doeren has won four out of the last five against UNC, including three straight.)
In Winston-Salem, it’s an ideal partnership between Clawson and Wake Forest.

Appears an 8-year contract extension for Dave Clawson, which has seemingly been in the works for months.
— Conor O'Neill (@ConorONeillWSJ) April 30, 2019

The same could be said for Bronco Mendenhall at Virginia; during his four years at UVA, the former BYU head man has turned things around quickly in Charlottesville — winning eight games last season and ranking inside the AP Top 25 for the first time since 2011.
Of course, there’s Dabo Swinney, too, who I’m pretty sure is the King of South Carolina, by this point.

Dabo literally drops his mic upon reflecting on Clemson's smashing of Alabama as the 2018 seniors get their championship rings at midfield.
— Larry Williams (@LarryWilliamsTI) April 6, 2019

On the other end of the spectrum, things approached disaster status last season for Willie Taggart at Florida State. However, Taggart was handed a bit of a mess thanks to Christmas Tree appreciator Jimbo Fisher, and he’s in just his second season of a six-year, $30 million deal. He should be afforded more runway to recruit and try to get things going in a positive direction.
This leaves one more choice: Justin Fuente at Virginia Tech. Perhaps that’s rash for a guy who won 19 games in his first two seasons and has been to three straight bowl games. But the wheels of the program started to get a little rickety in 2018. A plethora of players left the program — starting in the 2018 offseason and intensifying after the 2018 regular season wrapped up — as the Hokies won just six games.

A new era has begun for the Georgia Tech football program.
Paul Johnson, who coached the Yellow Jackets for the past 11 seasons, retired after the 2018 campaign. And Johnson’s run-heavy option offense left campus along with him.

Johnson’s successor, former Temple coach Geoff Collins, has brought a spread attack to Atlanta.

“He’s unlocking our potential to actually just go and make plays,” Georgia Tech linebacker David Curry said this month at ACC football media days in Charlotte, North Carolina.
“With the triple option, that is a scheme-based offense. So if you look at our offensive line the past few years, they’ve been smaller, more agile, very fast, very athletic. You don’t really see a lot of offensive lines like that around. We had to recruit guys based on that scheme.
“But now we’re a player-based scheme. So we want to recruit the five-stars, … we want to recruit the best players now. … We don’t have to recruit for a scheme now.”

Alin Edouard is an American quarterback for the Rhode Island Rams, which represents the University of Rhode Island. He began his college football career at Syracuse University , before transferring from the school. He attended Independence Community Collegewhere he played one season in 2016.
Contents

Personal life[edit]
Alin Edouard was born and raised in Miami Florida, after his father, Edlin, flew down from Haiti in 1990.[2] He grew up with his father, his mother Jocelyne, and his two brothers, Adlin and Irlin. Alin is the second child out of 3 kids.
High school career[edit]
In high school, Edouard played for Hialeah High.[3] In his senior year, Edouard led the Hialeah Thoroughbreds to the District-13 8A Playoffs with 2,398 passing yards and 45 touchdowns, as well as 632 rushing yards, averaging 7.8 yards per carry.[2]
In February 2013, Edouard initially committed to the University of Miami Hurricanes, before decommitting from the school in September.[4][5] Edouard then announced his commitment to Syracuse University on October 20, 2013.[6][7]
In high school, Edouard was listed as a four-star dual-threat QB.[6] However, his Rivals rating is 3 stars.[8] Edouard was the second QB in Syracuse's 2014 recruiting class.[9] He was considered one of the 15 best dual threat quarterbacks nationally.[10]

Sporting News 2019 preseason top 25
25. Nebraska

The Huskers were picked by the media to win the Big Ten West, and there's a lot of hype around Scott Frost entering his second season. Adrian Martinez will improve as a sophomore after totaling 25 touchdowns last year, but a defense that gave up 31.2 points per game in 2018 still must improve. The Sept. 28 home matchup against Ohio State is a candidate for ESPN "College GameDay." We'll find out then if the hype is warranted.
24. UCF
McKenzie Milton remains on the comeback trail, and quarterback remains the biggest question after Darriel Mack Jr. was also injured in the offseason. That puts the pressure on Notre Dame transfer Brandon Wimbush to keep the Knights on track in the American Athletic Conference for a third straight championship run. UCF faces FAU, Stanford and Pitt Weeks 2-4 in nonconference play. It will know where it stands by the time the Knights head into the conference slate.
23. Washington State
Mike Leach won't have Gardner Minshew in 2019, but he continues to make it work with a pass-happy system where it's next man up. Anthony Gordon took the lead in the spring, but Eastern Washington transfer Gage Gubrud will be in the mix in fall camp. The Cougars have been close to a Pac-12 championship, but that next step won't happen until they unseat rival Washington in the Apple Cup. The Cougars travel to Utah, Oregon and Washington this season, too.
22. Stanford
K.J. Costello returns at quarterback, and he will have to be a difference-maker if Stanford wants to be more than just a contender under David Shaw. Cameron Scarlett is slated to take over at tailback for Bryce Love, but did miss most of the spring. The offensive line will be a strength behind preseason All-American tackle Walker Little. The Cardinal will get all the attention they need in season-opening stretch against Northwestern, USC, UCF and Oregon.
21. Wisconsin
Wisconsin slipped to 8-5 in Paul Chryst's fourth season, and Alex Hornibrook transferred to Florida State. Who starts at quarterback now? Jack Coan could take the first snap, but freshman Graham Mertz will push for playing time early. That's the missing piece for a roster that's good enough to win the Big Ten. Doak Walker Award winner Jonathan Taylor returns. The crossover games against Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State are tough, but Chryst never shies away from that challenge.
MORE: Top 40 players of 2019
20. Iowa State
Matt Campbell is 19-19 after three seasons in Ames, and the Cyclones were close to a Big 12 championship game berth last season. Sophomore quarterback Brock Purdy will be the main leader of the offense now that receiver Hakeem Butler and running back David Montgomery are gone, but there was plenty of spring-practice buzz around four-star running back Breece Hall. Iowa State plays four of its first five games at home. The Cyclones will get off to a fast start, but will have to beat Oklahoma and Texas in November to keep their Big 12 hopes alive.
19. Mississippi State
The Bulldogs won four of their last five regular-season games and offered a glimpse of what could be with second-year coach Joe Moorhead. There are huge losses on defense with Montez Sweat and Jeffery Simmons and Johnathan Abram, not to mention quarterback Nick Fitzgerald on offense. Now it is either Keytaon Thompson or Penn State transfer Tommy Stevens' turn. Stevens played well given the chance last season and ran with the first team in the spring. If the Bulldogs can get through midseason road trips to Auburn and Tennessee, then November presents an opportunity in Starkville.
18. Syracuse
Syracuse is the best bet to challenge Clemson in the ACC Atlantic. Dino Babers and the Orange have proven that the last two seasons. Tommy DeVito takes over at quarterback, and he was 13 of 15 for 160 yards and two touchdowns in the spring game. The offensive line's development is worth monitoring, but most of the skill players return from an offense that averaged 40.2 points per game last season. Preseason All-American safety Andre Cisco leads the defense, and the special teams are in good hands with Andre Szmyt. Clemson visits the Carrier Dome on Sept. 14.

https://armchairallamericans.com/eagles-predicted-to-finish-fifth-in-acc-atlantic/ (armchairallamericans.com; Malley)

The college football season is almost underway, and the ACC converged on Charlotte last week for the ACC Kickoff. At the Kickoff, 173 media members were polled, and they concluded that Boston College would finish fifth in the ACC Atlantic this season.
These media members also voted on who they believe will win the ACC championship, with Clemson far and away the favorites, receiving 170 votes, while Syracuse received two and Virginia received one.

Seeing as they are the overwhelming favorites to win the entire ACC, it is unsurprising that Clemson was also picked to reign over the Atlantic as well. Syracuse was predicted to come in second, with Florida Statebehind them, followed by NC State, BC, Wake Forest, and Louisville, in that order.

Clemson, who dominated Alabama in the national championship last year by a final score of 44-16, is deserving of being the heavy favorites in the conference, and possibly even the nation. However, the rest of the predicted standings are questionable.

Syracuse is a popular dark horse pick in the ACC this season, with quarterback Tommy DeVito receiving much praise after his brief, yet effective appearances last season. Additionally, their defense was spectacular, finishing second in the conference in both sacks and interceptions, as well as finishing in the top half in scoring defense.

The rest of the division appears to be up for grabs, with Florida State, NC State, and BC all receiving a similar number of votes. It is perplexing that the media is so high on the Seminoles, considering how bad they played last season, finishing second-to-last in the division. NC State and Boston College are both schools that showed flashes of promise, something that Florida State never did.

...

https://n./news/ask-farrell-which-team-will-surprise-in-the-acc- (; Farrell & Gorney)

Florida State went 5-7 last season, lost to Miami, got blown out by Clemson and Florida and there seemed to be almost immediate frustration with how the program was going under first-year coach Willie Taggart.
It was the Seminoles’ first losing season since 1976, which also happened to be Bobby Bowden’s first year. It would turn out to be Bowden’s only losing campaign.

Turning the page to 2019, the Seminoles are picked to finish second in the ACC Atlantic by Street & Smith’s but third in the division by Athlon Sports with a projected finish of 7-5, which would be considered another disappointment by fans in Tallahassee.

There is reason for optimism as offensive coordinator Kendal Briles takes over the offense and he’s known to put up points quickly. There is high-level talent at running back and wide receiver and the defense should be improved after a really average showing last season. The schedule is slightly easier although some road trips to Virginia, Clemson, Boston College and Florida will still pose a challenge.

Florida State is not the only ACC program who could surprise this season.
Under first-year coach Manny Diaz, Miami could make a major statement in Week 1 against Florida - unlike last season when the Hurricanes got thumped by LSU in the opener - although that program also has some questions to answer.

A lot of preseason prognosticators are high on Syracuse heading into this season as Athlon predicts a 9-win season and Virginia Tech could make a comeback into ACC Coastal relevance after a bad 6-7 season. If the ball bounces the right way, Virginia could be headed toward at least a 10-win season.

We ask http:/// National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell which team - Florida State, Miami or otherwise - could be the biggest surprise in the ACC this season.

FARRELL'S TAKE

“This is a tough call and I’m going to go with a team that’s hasn’t been mentioned and that’s Boston College.

2013 Florida State vs. 2018 Clemson: Who Wins?
From the ACC Digital Network:
The ACC has produced two of college football's most prolific champions in recent years. The 2013 Florida State Seminoles were led by Heisman Trophy Winner Jameis Winston, who directed one of the FBS' most prolific offense of all-time, scoring a single-season record of 723 points. The Seminoles also boasted the nation's top defense that season surrendering 12.1 points per game and loaded with NFL talent. The 2018 Clemson Tigers blazed through their 2018 slate, becoming college football's first 15-0 team since 1897. The Tigers' offense featured freshman sensation Trevor Lawrence and running back Travis Etienne. Clemson's defense led the nation in scoring defense and quarterback sacks, featuring one of the best defensive lines in college football history led by Christian Wilkins.
