Welcome to National Creamsicle Day!

In 1905, eleven-year-old Frank Epperson encased vanilla ice cream inside of frozen fruit juice and called it an Epsicle. His creation is similar to what we now call a Creamsicle, the cool treat which we celebrate today. The Creamsicle has a flat bar shape with rounded ends, vanilla cream at its center, and a fruity ice covering. Because of its two main components, it is sometimes known as a 50-50 bar. The classic flavor is orange, but it comes in a variety of flavors, including raspberry, lime, cherry, grape, and blueberry. It is also available in healthier options, such as low-fat, low-calorie, or sugar-free.

Adelson: The 2019 Syracuse football team 'is scared of nobody' - The Juice Online (the juice; podcast; Cheng)

ESPN.com’s Andrea Adelson calls in to preview the 2019 ACC and Syracuse football season with host Wes Cheng on The Juice on the Cuse podcast hosted by SNY.tv. TJO editor in chief Brad Bierman then calls in to chat about Syracuse’s first exhibition game in Italy.

Syracuse football’s Justin Lustig one of assistant coaches to watch in 2019 (PS; Burrows)

Syracuse football’s Justin Lustig is an assistant coach to watch for in 2019, according to The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman.
Feldman put together a list of the top assistant coaches in the country that teams looking for a new head coach may try to target, and Lustig made an appearance.

Here’s what Feldman had to say:
One of the best-kept secrets in Power 5 football, Lustig is regarded by his peers as one of the top STCs in all of football. He opted to remain with Dino Babers instead of possibly going to Penn State. He also has some impressive head coaching credentials, having turned an 0-11 Division II program at Edinboro into one that went 9-2 after he took over. The turnaround was the largest in Division II football history. He spent five years at Ball State and probably will be a smart option for the Cardinals or other MAC schools if they opt for a coaching change.

Lustig was promoted to assistant head coach by Dino Babers in February but also serves as SU’s special teams coordinator/outside receivers coach.

Lustig has received much of the credit for SU’s outstanding special teams play and earned a nomination for the Broyles Award in 2018, which is given to the nation’s top assistant coach.

Syracuse football training camp blog 2019: Defense dominates Saturday scrimmage, SU loses James Conners to injury (DO; Graham & Black)

Syracuse football training camp opened Friday, Aug. 2. The Daily Orange beat writers, Eric Black, Andrew Graham and Josh Schafer, will keep a running tab of updates from each SU practice this summer before the Orange’s first game at Liberty on Aug. 31. Follow along here and on Twitter @DOsports.

Tuesday, Aug. 13

Syracuse head coach Dino Babers couldn’t stop praising his defense’s performance during the team’s first scrimmage of the season last Saturday. During his first media availability of the second full week of practice on Tuesday, Babers explained that the SU defense stifled the offense across the board, especially at the line of scrimmage.

He described the scrimmage as “shock treatment” for the new additions to the offensive line rotation, which include the likes of Carlos Vettorello, Anthony Red and Ryan Alexander.

“Our defense is really, really good right now,” Babers said. “So every time (the new offensive linemen) go in, they’re like running around with their head cut off.”

Babers continued, saying that the offense as a whole got frustrated on Saturday because it didn’t move the ball the way it wanted to. He attributed that to the mental aspect of the game as opposed to physically, such as players not knowing the correct package or going the wrong direction on certain plays.

The 90-minute scrimmage included 144 plays, of which just five resulted in a touchdown for the offense. In total, the defense recorded seven sacks, an interception and a safety, when Alton Robinson took down Tommy DeVito on the first play of the day, per SU Athletics’ press release.

“I saw a defense dominate the entire scrimmage,” Babers said. “If you’ve got a good defense, suppose you have a chance to win, right? So I’m excited about that, we need to do some more things on offense.”

Not only did the offense struggle in the scrimmage, they also didn’t emerge unscathed. Redshirt junior tight end Jesse Conners broke a bone and is expected to be out 4-6 weeks, Babers said. That timeline sets him up to return at some point during the beginning of September, when SU plays at Maryland on Sept. 7 or hosts Clemson the following week. Conners transferred to Syracuse from Holy Cross in 2017 and has yet to see the field.

Hackett will likely also see time lined up as a fullback. The tight end/fullback group (which includes Hackett, Jesse Conners, Luke Benson, Zack Lesko and Chris Elmore) split off for a few minutes to work on their own. That’s Elmore in the green non-contact jersey.
— Eric Black (@esblack34) August 7, 2019
Conners’ injury leaves just four healthy players in the group, which includes FB/TE Chris Elmore and tight ends Zack Lesko, Aaron Hackett and Luke Benson. Elmore, who donned a green non-contact jersey during practice last week, suited up in pads and a regular jersey like normal on Tuesday. Babers said he’s looking for Hackett to act as the leader for the group, especially with the absence of Conners.

“We’ve got some young guys in there playing,” Babers said. “We just had an injury there. So we expect a lot out of him and he’s gonna have to hold that group together.”

Focus for Syracuse's Dino Babers: Prove last year no fluke (auburnpub.com; AP)

Coach Dino Babers begins his fourth season at Syracuse with a big goal — to prove that last season was no fluke.
Syracuse finished 10-3 in 2018 and was No. 15 in the AP's final poll. It was only the Orange's fourth season above .500 since 2001 and came after three consecutive 4-8 finishes.

"We have high expectations, but we've got to go out there and prove ourselves," Babers said.

The key to that sudden success was a high-powered offense keyed by dual-threat quarterback Eric Dungey, an opportunistic defense that produced 31 turnovers, and a near-flawless kicking game. A big piece of that is missing — Dungey ran for 754 yards and 15 TDs and passed for 2,868 and 18 more scores, averaging 278.6 yards of total offense per game in his final year.
Redshirt sophomore Tommy DeVito is ready to step in. He's accumulated more experience than most backups, having taken first-string snaps two straight springs and last summer in place of Dungey, who was nursing injuries.
"It's just fun knowing that everyone's kind of looking at you to be the guy," said the strong-armed DeVito, who is working on adding touch to his throws.

At 6-foot-2 and 212 pounds, DeVito had his moments last fall, rescuing the Orange in wins over North Carolina and Florida State. He finished the season 44 of 87 for 525 yards and four TDs with three picks passing, but he's certainly not a dual threat (minus-17 yards on 23 carries) and he struggled mightily against Notre Dame in place of an injured Dungey, getting sacked six times and throwing two interceptions.
It's all part of the process.

"I think he knows the offense," Babers said. "Last year there were a couple of opportunities where he had an opportunity to be the starting quarterback."

While Babers has succeeded in building depth in the lineup, there's not much to fall back on at quarterback if DeVito gets injured. Redshirt senior Clayton Welch, a junior college transfer, is listed as the backup on the preseason depth chart and has yet to throw a pass for the Orange.

Other things to know about Syracuse:

DEFENSE RULES

Babers is quick to point to his defense as a big key to the upcoming season. The Orange finished 2018 with 18 interceptions and 13 fumble recoveries, the most turnovers of any Power Five team in the nation. Syracuse returns stalwart defensive ends Alton Robinson and Kendall Coleman, who combined for 20 of the Orange's 43 sacks (10 apiece), and everyone is back in the secondary. Babers has to replace his two leading tacklers, LBs Ryan Guthrie (107) and Kielan Whitner (100), and former Cornell wrestler Ben Honis is in the mix after transferring. The downside is that defensive tackle McKinley Williams is out indefinitely with a foot injury.

Syracuse football working on the mental game in week 2 of camp (video) (PS; video; Mink)

With one week of preseason practice in the books, Syracuse football coach Dino Babers wants to see more improvement in the mental areas of the game.

Physically, Syracuse is faster and more explosive than any of Babers’ previous three teams here.

Execution, particularly on offense in the wake of a Saturday scrimmage dominated by the defense, should start to show up better by cleaning up the mental miscues, Babers said.

“When the offense doesn’t move the ball, it’s normally mental stuff. It’s not so much physical,” Babers said following Tuesday’s practice.
He said the offense may have gotten frustrated at times during Saturday’s scrimmage because it’s not accustomed to being shut down in the manner it was that day.

“It’s guys turning left instead of right, going 8 yards instead of going 10," Babers said. "We have to work on those little things if we’re going to do the things we need to, to have the tempo that we need to have to be successful.”

Syracuse Orange football Position Overview 2019: Defensive Backs (archysport.com)

The Orange Syracuse 2019 football season is only a few weeks away and we have almost completed the previews of positions for each group on this year's SU formation.

Every week before the season, we present a group and all players of the roster this fall. Last week, we saw how Syracuse was going to reset the linebacker. This time:
At the start of last season, Orange's high school seemed to be a handicap. They have allowed copious amounts of big games, have been experienced but inconsistent and do not seem to have the understanding to help them, either. What a difference a year makes, though.
Even taking into account some of the early struggles against Michigan West, the defensive backs of Syracuse have improved significantly, both individually and as a group, in 2018. The completion percentages have gone from 60.9 to 55.1, and interceptions went from four to 18. They allowed 0.4 yards less per game. completion, and of course, saw the arrival of a discussion star and All-American in Andre Cisco. Beyond Cisco, Christopher Fredrick and Evan Foster have made significant improvements, as well as the emergence of Ifeatu Melifonwu. Now, this looks like an awesome group that will team with the defensive line to wear what should be a strong unit in general on that side of the ball.

Cornerbacks

Christopher Fredrick, (Redshirt) Senior
At the beginning of last year, there were ideas (here at least) that Fredrick could make a jump in the top echelon of the corner half. And even though things started a little difficult, the veteran did it as a high school leader who improved almost every week. During the year, he had 56 tackles, three selections and four breaks, as well as a TFL. By playing to go further in the radar of the NFL scouts this year, we could see even bigger numbers.
Ifeatu Melifonwu, (red shirt) Sophomore
The pro potential is in the genes of the family, and Melifonwu has already shown this potential even with limited action with Syracuse until now. Check figures David Hale pointed out today too, for more evidence. He allowed less than 50% completions and zero touchdowns, while separating four passes. Not surprisingly, he grabbed one of the starting corner roles in the pre-season depth chart.
Trill Williams Sophomore
Trill will be leaving Nickel Corner this year after impressing in action on the spot last year. He had 31 tackles plus 2.5 TFL and two interceptions. With the linebacker even more uncertain this season, we will probably see even more 4-2-5 formations that keep him on the field. That's great, because we'll take any excuse to bring the game maker more clichés.
Scoop Bradshaw, Senior
Scoop has been replaced by Fredrick's original starting role in the initial depth chart, but that may not mean that we will see him much less. Because of the speed of the game, the orange support offensive also creates more defensive shots. So, even with the potential start of Melifonwu, he is still in the rotation to keep his spirit fresh and his experience should be a major asset to the bench.

Louisville football’s most dangerous offensive weapon can do it all (bigredlouie.com; Lane)

Louisville football is in need of big-time playmakers for 2019, and their best weapon literally can do it all.

In today’s football landscape, looking and fitting the part is something that sometimes can come before actual production and the quality of a player on the field. For Louisville football, their most dangerous weapon doesn’t necessarily “look” like he’s the most dangerous player on the field. But looks can be deceiving.

Take former Ole Miss standout, D.K. Metcalf, as the perfect example. The 6’3, 228-pound receiver looks like a greek god, chiseled from the perfect stone, made to play football.

If you asked someone to put together the perfect player for football, it quite literally looks like him.
Due to his physique and overall size, he quickly became an overnight sensation with the snap of a photo. Literally.

D.K. Metcalf is Mel Kiper Jr.’s top ranked wide receiver, linebacker, defensive end, strong safety and tight end prospect in this year’s draft.
— Field Yates (@FieldYates) February 11, 2019

Even with limited production at Ole Miss, he became an instant first-round favorite across mock drafts due to his blazing 40-time and incredible stature. He is a “prototypical” playmaker.
For Louisville, their playmaker is one the opposite end of the spectrum. While he looks like a dynamic playmaker on the field, off the field you might mistake him for just another guy.

At 5’9 and just 153-pounds, Tutu Atwell has all the potential in the world to be the most dynamic player on the Louisville football roster in 2019 under new head coach Scott Satterfield. We saw glimpses of a potential star in the making during 2018, as the freshmen slot receiver finished fourth in receptions with 24 total for 406 yards and two touchdowns.

ACC preview: It's 4-time champion Clemson and everyone else (espn; AP)

Reigning national champion Clemson has taken any drama out of the Atlantic Coast Conference race.

At least on paper.

Dabo Swinney's program has risen to the top of college football, not just the ACC, during a multi-year tear. The Tigers enter the 2019 season with four straight ACC championships, the kind of domination last seen when Bobby Bowden's Florida State teams romped through the 1990s with at least a share of nine straight titles.

They're an overwhelming favorite yet again as they contend for a third national title in four seasons.
"Truly, we don't carry everything over," Swinney said, adding: "It's always about what's next. You've got to show up every year with something to prove."

That mission now is becoming the first power conference team to win five straight league championship games. The strength will be on an offense led by quarterback Trevor Lawrence -- the preseason ACC player of the year and one of 13 Tigers players making up nearly half of the 27-player preseason all-conference team.

With Clemson taking its place alongside Alabama as college football's unquestioned top programs, the Tigers had only one close call last year: a 27-23 home win against Syracuse after Lawrence was knocked from the game days after former starter Kelly Bryant decided to transfer. The Tigers won their other seven ACC regular-season games by an average margin of 40.1 points, beat Pittsburgh 42-10 in the league title game then blew out Notre Dame and Alabama to become college football's first 15-0 team since the 1800s.

The strongest challenge could come from Syracuse within the Atlantic Division. The Orange won 10 games in Year 3 under Dino Babers and offer an immediate challenge by hosting the Tigers on Sept. 14. Syracuse is the last ACC team to beat Clemson, that one coming two years ago in the Carrier Dome.

On the other side, the Coastal Division continues to offer a bewildering amount of turnover at the top with a different team winning the title for the past six seasons.

Best, worst case scenarios for every ACC team (247sports.com; Crawford)

Outside of defending national champion Clemson, is there another team capable of reaching the College Football Playoff this season from the ACC?

Syracuse, Virginia, Miami, Florida State — all of those squads feature a dynamic player or two who will have a say in how the league in won this season. But no team has the sheer talent in the two-deep that the Tigers possess, the odds-on favorite to win another title.

We've taken the optimistic approach for every ACC team ahead of the 2019 season during this best case, worst case exercise. Every team isn't capable of enduring a challenging schedule and going unbeaten, but there are some who could surprise us.

Here's a preseason look at postseason projections for all 14 teams in the ACC:

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
Best case: 3-9, 1-7 — Much like Duke this season, Georgia Tech's opener is unwinnable. A road game at top-ranked Clemson with a team undergoing a complete-180 philosophical shift usually means a multi-touchdown loss that'll need to be flushed quickly. USF in the home opener the following week presents an intriguing challenge.
Worst case: 1-11, 0-8 — Tough sledding for first-year coach Geoff Collins, who may be favored in three games tops. The Yellow Jackets will have a chance to win three games in September, but after that, don't expect much.

Duke Blue Devils
Best case: 5-7, 3-5 — The Blue Devils should beat North Carolina A&T, Middle Tennessee and Georgia Tech this fall. But after that?
Worst case: 3-9, 1-7 — Duke is facing a couple significant injuries early on in camp which could detonate the first month of the season after the Blue Devils open with a loss to Alabama. Should David Cutcliffe's crew start 1-3 before hosting Pitt on Oct. 5, getting to bowl eligibility is out of the question.

Boston College Eagles
Best case: 7-5, 4-4 — Boston College will garner some attention when the Eagles are ranked inside the Top 25 at 6-0 at the midway point (without beating a single nationally-ranked opponent). Then, the topple begins. Steve Addazio’s team will only be favored, guessing here, in one game over their final six games and I’m projecting five losses during that stretch.
Worst case: 4-8, 1-7 — The opener vs. Virginia Tech is arguably the biggest game of the season. A win makes the likelihood of an unbeaten start through the first half of the year within reach while a loss could punch a hole in this team's confidence level before the next ACC contest a few weeks later. From Oct. 26 (Clemson) onward, Boston College may not be favored in any matchup.

NC State Wolfpack
Best case: 9-3, 5-3 — In this scenario, the losses come to Clemson, Syracuse and Florida State with notable wins over West Virginia, Boston College and Wake Forest away from home. NC State will have a new look offensive line this season, so that's an area to keep an eye when thinking about this team's ceiling.
Worst case: 5-7, 2-6 — This would take a cataclysmic failure in all areas for Dave Doeren's team beginning with a loss in the opener vs. East Carolina and first-year coach Mike Houston. After embarrassing the Pirates last season, that game could get scrappy. But if all goes well there and the Wolfpack is able to beat the Mountaineers in Morgantown a few weeks later, they'll be heading to Florida State with a chance to start 5-0 exiting September.

Louisville Cardinals
Best case: 4-8, 2-6 — Can you find two ACC games on the schedule Louisville can win this fall? We'll go with Wake Forest and Boston College if all goes well and quarterback play doesn't rate among the nation's worst.
Worst case: 1-11, 0-8 — Scott Satterfield has his work cut out for him in his first season, similar to the overhaul underway at Georgia Tech under Collins. Facing one of the ACC's toughest schedules with Notre Dame to boot, disappointment is likely for the Cardinals.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons
Best case: 9-3, 5-3 — Still undecided on his starting quarterback during camp, Deacons coach Dave Clawson has tremendous depth at the position — an element most teams do not have in the ACC. Expect Jamie Newman or Sam Hartman to light it up early before Wake Forest faces its first real test on Sept. 28 at Boston College.
Worst case: 5-7, 2-6 — Take a peek at Wake Forest's rivalry games against North Carolina, NC State and Duke, all very winnable games for the Deacons. This team is too talented to go 0-3 against that trifecta, but even two unexpected losses could damage bowl hopes.

Pitt Panthers
Best case: 8-4, 5-3 — An early-season upset win over UCF will help the Panthers escape a 1-2 start and bring light to a disappointing start. One of the better seven-win teams (I'm projecting as a final win total) in college football this fall, Pitt will play spoiler late, but miss out on another ACC Coastal title.
Worst case: 5-7, 3-5 — Non-conference showdowns vs. Penn State and UCF, two teams likely ranked inside the Top 15, is a tall task. Couple that with back-to-back games vs. Syracuse and Miami in October and the 2019 slate doesn't let up.

Syracuse Orange
Best case: 11-1, 7-1 — Outside of the Week 3 showdown vs. Clemson, it’s hard to believe a Power 5 contender has a schedule this easy. Syracuse has two high-end pass rushers, and a veteran signal caller in Tommy Devito who has waited his turn. Road games vs. N.C. State and Florida State could be season-definers following the tussle with the Tigers. The Orange will be 4-1 after the first month of the season and ranked inside the Top 25 with a chance to win out.
Worst case: 8-4, 5-3 — Don't get caught looking ahead. Syracuse travels to Maryland to face first-year coach Mike Locksley and the Terps a week before hosting Clemson with potentially College GameDay in town. Lose that game and this season could turn sour quick. The aforementioned trips to Raleigh, N.C. and Tallahassee, Fla. are challenging too.

Pitt eyes balance in bid to repeat as ACC Coastal champs (wiscnews.com; AP; Graves)

Kenny Pickett knows his numbers in his first year as Pittsburgh's starting quarterback weren't great. He doesn't particularly care.
What the numbers failed to show were all the times he would come to the line of scrimmage, survey the defense and check for the right play, a play that was almost always a handoff for a team that relied heavily on the running back tandem of Darrin Hall and Qadree Ollision.

Those heady decisions earned Pickett praise during video review sessions the next morning, even if they didn't fill up the stat sheet with gaudy passing numbers or do much to build on the "Kenny Perfect" moniker bestowed upon him following his electric debut as a freshman at the end of 2017.

"I'm not here to please fans," said Pickett, who threw for 1,969 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2018, both totals that failed to crack the top 10 in the 14-team ACC. "I'm here to please the guys in our locker room, on our coaching staff. So as long as I'm doing right by my teammates first and then the coaches, it's OK with me. I just want to win."
Something the Panthers did enough last season to earn the program its first ACC Coastal Division title . Yet momentum in the Coastal is fickle. No team has repeated as Coastal champions since Virginia Tech in 2011.

Having advanced Duke football from a perennial losing program into one that regularly plays in bowl games, David Cutcliffe challenged his staff to push the Blue Devils even further.

Part of doing that, going from a team that posts seven or eight wins into one that challenges for divisional and league championships, means not settling for what’s comfortable.

“It’s real easy to play the guy that knows what to do,” Cutcliffe said in a press conference Tuesday. “There’s a comfort zone. I told them if you churn, which means coach hard enough, the cream rises to the top.”

That plan is playing out this month as the Blue Devils prepare for their season-opening game against Alabama on Aug. 31.

Freshmen players are all over Duke’s two-deep chart, earning playing time with the first- and second-team units on offense and defense when the Blue Devils held their first scrimmage this past Saturday night at Wallace Wade Stadium.

FSU football: Noles picked fifth in USA Today’s ACC power rankings (chopchat.com; Hunt)

The perception of FSU football seems to be changing as we get closer to the season. One writer is still weary of what the Noles bring to the table.

Most reasonable FSU football fans expect the 2019 team to be better than the 2018 version unless injuries happen at key positions.
A lot of factors going into it. The schedule is easier and the FSU offensive staff has substantial upgrades with Kendal Briles, Randy Clements and Ron Dugans.

Briles having FULL control over the offense is huge in and of itself when it comes to coordination and organization of that unit which largely the reason the Noles were terrible in 2018 aside from special teams.
Harlon Barnett’s defenses have shown the ability to have huge improvements as players gain more experience in his system.
USA Today released their ACC preseason Power Rankings recently and had this to say about FSU football:

5. Florida State: 7-5 (No. 43)
Seven wins is the baseline given FSU’s talent, but there’s reason to be wary after a dreadful start under Willie Taggart and his staff in their first season. James Blackman needs to bring consistency to the quarterback position.
I’m not in love with the list overall. I understand a lot of emphasis has to be placed on recent history and the Noles haven’t been great the past two seasons.

However, history also says Willie Taggart can coach as he’s resurrected teams in the past and the Noles should be no different considering we know what the issues were/are.
I can’t expect a national writer that doesn’t cover the team daily to know and/or understand those things either.
Here’s the ranking:

  1. Clemson
  2. Syracuse
  3. Miami
  4. Virginia Tech
  5. FSU
  6. Virginia
  7. NC State
  8. Wake Forest
  9. Boston College
  10. Pittsburgh
  11. North Carolina
  12. Duke
  13. Georgia Tech
  14. Louisville
Thoughts

How in the world Syracuse and Miami No. 2 and No. 3 though? I’m sorry, Syracuse has to do more than win 10 games once in forever while breaking in a new QB to be rated that high.

Meet the Tigers: 3 things you probably don't know about Clemson football's Tanner Muse (greenvilleonline.com; Keepfer)

for gbo

Tanner Muse
Position: Safety
Year: Graduate
Height: 6-1
Weight: 230
Hometown: Belmont, North Carolina
Notable statistic: Has scored two touchdowns in his career – a 64-yard interception return and a 63-yard fumble return – with both coming vs. Syracuse in 2016 and 2017, respectively.

Nipping at his heels
Muse has two pit bulls that accompany him on his runs and have forced him into better shape. “They don’t like it when I run, so I either get fast or I get nipped,” Muse said.

He could fly
Mickey Lineberger, his coach at South Point High in Belmont, N.C., called Muse the most athletic player he’s had in more than 40 years. “He could fly,” Lineberger said. “He’s the most blessed athlete I’ve ever been around.”
Potential face-off
Muse’s younger brother Nick has transferred to South Carolina after playing two seasons at William & Mary, where he was a third-team All-Colonial Athletic Association tight end in 2018. If he’s cleared to play this season by the NCAA, Nick and Tanner could face off on Nov. 30.

NC State: Sleeping Giant, or Comatose? (RX; HM)

NC State: Sleeping Giant, or Comatose?

Ask most people which team in the state of North Carolina has the most college football history and they'll probably say UNC. Ask them which team has the most upside, though, and you'll hear a lot folks say NC State. They may be on to something...

The Wolfpack have plenty going for them. Carter-Finley stadium seats about 6,500 more than the next-biggest college stadium in the state (Kenan Memorial, UNC) and routinely averages significantly better attendance. And in a state where basketball is king, NC State has the potential to reel in the lion's share of the high school gridiron talent.

Look at this S&P historical trend tweeted out by Bill Connelly:

NC State S&P+ history. A few peaks, loads of potential, and zero top-10 finishes.
— Bill Connelly (@ESPN_BillC) August 13, 2019

It looks like NC State has gotten knocked down 3 times in its history: first around 1930, a second time around 1950, and again around 1980. However, other than these three rapid falls, the program has been on a more or less continual upswing for the last 100 years.

That's what makes this team so frustrating. It has the fan support. It has the talent base in state. It has show prolonged periods of improvement in the sport... but Wolfpack football just can't seem to get over the hump. All of which begs the question: is NC State the "sleeping giant" of ACC football... or more like the comatose giant?

Maybe they're just waiting for the next full moon...? The Pack plays exactly ONE game during a full moon this Fall: September 14th, at West Virginia. Let the Wolves feast on the Mountaineers!

Top 20 Avg S&P Since 1983 (RX; HM)

Top 20 Avg S&P Since 1983

Why 1983? That's the year the Supreme Court took the cuffs off college football and allowed it to sell tv rights to the highest bidder - which, in turned, funded an explosion of growth for the sport. Notice this tweet by Bill Connelly:

One more, per @chrisfallica request ... top 20 teams in S&P+ since '83 (aka the year the Supreme Ct opened the TV floodgates):

1 FSU
2 UF
3 Oh St
4 Miami
5 Bama
6 Mich
7 Nebraska
8 USC
9 OU
10 ND
11 UGA
12 Auburn
13 PSU
14 Tenn
15 LSU
16 A&M
17 Texas
18 Clemson
19 VT
20 Oregon
— Bill Connelly (@ESPN_BillC) August 12, 2019

If you know much about Bill, you know he's the king of S&P - a type of mathematical power rating which is an excellent way to compare teams, especially over the long view like this. So basically he's telling us that the ACC has the #1 team of the past 36 years, the #4 team, plus 2 more full-time and one part-time conference mates in the top 20...

A drone that delivers fast food? You can thank Syracuse for that. (PS; Weiner)

A hungry North Carolina resident will make history sometime next month simply by ordering a burger or burrito. A drone, weighing as little as a toddler and using technology first tested in Central New York, will deliver the fast food after flying over a busy highway.

The feat will be the work of a small Israeli startup who, with the help of Syracuse-based test pilots and engineers, beat out some of the world’s best-known tech giants for a head-start in the exploding food delivery business.

Syracuse-based NUAIR confirmed the drone’s backup safety system – a high-tech automatically deploying parachute – would work under the worst-case scenarios.

Even if all motors failed at full speed 230 feet in the air, the free-falling drone’s parachute would deploy, gently lowering it to the ground to avoid a potentially deadly crash into people.

Flytrex, the Israeli startup, says the parachute safety system’s validation helped convince the federal government, for the first time, to allow drones to fly over a highway where motorists travel 55 mph or more.
It’s a big deal because the Federal Aviation Administration, for now, bans the operation of most commercial drones over people, homes and roads.

But armed with test results from Central New York, Flytrex asked the FAA for a waiver to fly over a highway in Holly Springs, N.C., as part of a three-year test project.

The waiver, granted this week, will make the fast-growing suburb of Raleigh one of the first places in the United States where food will be delivered by drone.
