Welcome to National Senior Citizens Day!

Older people in our communities—senior citizens—have contributed so much to the success of the United States throughout their entire lives, and they continue to do so as they grow old. As time goes on, in part because of advances in healthcare, people are living longer lives and staying productive longer. Many senior citizens continue to work or volunteer well into old age. Today we honor them, and we show them gratitude by making sure our communities are places they can thrive as they reach their sunset years.

In 1988, House Joint Resolution 138 designated August 21 as National Senior Citizens Day. It authorized and requested the President to issue a proclamation for the day. Accordingly, President Ronald Reagan issued Proclamation 5847. The original legislation called for those over the age of 55 to be honored. There continues to be a debate over at what age one becomes a senior citizen. Some say 55, while others say 62, 65, or 67. On National Senior Citizens Day, it seems appropriate that anyone who wishes to identify as a senior citizen and is over the age of 55 should be able to be honored.

Ex-Syracuse football recruit Robert Washington to play for Old Dominion, not Liberty (PS; Bailey)

Syracuse football will not square off with former recruit Robert Washington in Week 1.
Washington, once a four-star Class of 2016 running back pledged to the Orange, has transferred to Old Dominion.

He popped up on the online roster for Liberty -- SU’s season-opening opponent -- in mid-July before being removed. Liberty assistant athletic director for athletic communications Todd Wetmore said in an email that Washington was “mistakenly added.”

Wetmore said that Washington was not a member of the program at that time and did not respond to an email seeking further clarification.
Washington started practicing with Old Dominion on Aug. 3, according to The Virginian-Pilot. He is on the Monarchs’ online roster.

At the movies: Dino Babers rates his Top 5 (D&C; Roth)

In another life, Syracuse University football coach Dino Babers would be an actor, director or movie critic. Yes, he loves the movies that much.

“Movies are the one place I can go and I can be pretty normal, which is a reason I go a lot,'' he says.

He goes so often, his players sometimes walk into a theater and shout "Coach, you in here?''
"I'll go, 'Yeah, now be quiet,'" Babers says.
He prefers action and adventure movies where the lead character delivers a memorable monologue or he leaves with an enduring message and feeling inspired.

Here are Babers' Top Five favorites:
1. West Side Story “The Sharks and Jets. It taught me about diversity.”
2. The Great Santini “If you made your bed and he (his dad) bounced a quarter, it better bounce twice. If not, everything was sitting in the corner and you had to start over again. I was raised just like that.’’ Babers' dad was a 21-year Navy man.
3. Troy “To be great, you can’t be afraid to fail.” The scene where the boy tells Achilles that he wouldn’t want to fight the warrior Achilles has to fight because he’s the biggest man the boy has ever seen. Achilles tells that boy that’s why no one will ever remember your name.
4. Tombstone “The dialogue. There are so many great lines.”
5. The Natural “Even though you might not be young anymore, if you adapt, you can still have success.” Roy Hobbs starts out as a world-class pitcher then revives his career as an aging slugger after he's shot.''

Dino Babers: Staying good is the hard part for Syracuse football (PS; Burrows)

Turning things around shouldn’t be the hard part for Dino Babers and Syracuse football.
After back-to-back 4-8 seasons, Babers and the Orange had a breakthrough year in 2018, going 10-3 with a win in the Camping World Bowl.

In an interview with Jim Rome on Monday, Babers said staying good will be much tougher than that rebuild.

“Well I would have to say for me -- turning around to me does not seem like a difficult task,” Babers told Rome.

“Even when I took this job, everyone was like ‘don’t go there, there’s no way you can win there.’ And my first thing was, ‘why not? Why can’t you win there, they won there before.’”

.@CoachBabersCuse says he knew he could win at Syracuse. Keeping it consistent is the challenge.
— Jim Rome (@jimrome) August 19, 2019
Babers added that being consistently good, not occasionally great, is the new goal.
“The harder thing to me is keeping it consistent,” he said. “When you look at the Nick Sabans, the guys who do it year after year, that’s the harder job to do. But you gotta get there first. It’s hard getting there. But to consistently do it is the key and that’s what we are striving for.”

Brendan Carney says Syracuse football has chemistry for 'another great season' - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

Syracuse football legend Brendan Carney calls in to preview the 2019 Orange football season with host Wes Cheng on The Juice on the Cuse podcast hosted by SNY.tv. TJO editor in chief Brad Bierman then calls in to chat about the basketball team’s perfect 4-0 exhibition trip to Italy.

Here are the highlights from the show:

Wesley Cheng: Let’s talk about the 2019 Syracuse football team as a whole. They lose quarterback Eric Dungey. They lose both of their starting linebackers. Three starters from the offensive line and some depth on the defensive line. Do you think Syracuse can win another 10 games and maybe challenge Clemson for the ACC title this year?

Brendan Carney: I think this team has the chemistry to make this another great season. Regarding what we’ve lost, when you look like a program like Clemson, there’s no drop off in talent from year to year. That’s one of the main ingredients in being consistently good and not occasionally great, which is what Coach Babers talk about. Babers and his staff have done a great job of recruiting and developing depth in the last few years. I think these young guys can step up and perform at a high level. I think if you look in the ACC after Clemson, it’s everyone else. There’s a solid opportunity for Syracuse to be that next team that everyone’s talking about. They really need to drown out all of the noise around them and executing one game at a time.

Dino Babers continues to rebuild Syracuse football (msn.com; video; Sports Media Group)

Dino Babers is entering his fourth season as head coach of the Orange and is looking to build upon a 10-win season in 2018.

Questions arise surrounding Carrier Dome name in Syracuse (news10.com)

Where in the world did this story come from?

The Carrier Dome in Syracuse is getting a huge face lift, and with the big changes to the venue, could there also be a big change to the name right around the corner?

Since the day Syracuse University inflated the dome high above the Syracuse skyline, the name “Carrier” has been attached. But this year, some football season ticket holders noticed something different on their packets.

The word “Carrier” was absent and simply referred to the stadium as “The Dome.”

While SU hasn’t given a direct answer to whether they’re dropping “Carrier,” the school’s vice president called the stadium “The Dome” in a recent statement.

Meanwhile, the Carrier Company claims the right to call the facility the “Carrier Dome” and said it will be contacting the university to discuss the matter.

All of this going on while the dome undergoes a $118 million overhaul that will, among other things, completely replace the iconic inflatable roof.

Babers On Facing Liberty: It Really Has Me Concerned (cbssportsradio.com; radio; Da Show)

No. 22 Syracuse will play a fairly tough opponent in its third game of the season. That would be Clemson, which has won a national title in two of the last three seasons.

But Syracuse head coach Dino Babers isn’t worried about Clemson just yet. No, he’s got his hands full with Liberty in the season-opener, which, by the way, is on the road.

“It’s really got me concerned,” Babers said on The DA Show. “Hugh Freeze does a fantastic job. Liberty is making the jump up to Division I. They’ve got a lot of players that are transferring back there. Obviously we don’t have any tape with the turnover of Turner Gill and Hugh Freeze replacing him. It’s a trap game. It’s really, really dangerous. I’m not getting much sleep over that at night.”

If Syracuse gets past Liberty in the Aug. 31 opener – and Maryland on Sept. 7 – it sets the stage for a Week 3 clash against Clemson. Syracuse/Clemson has become arguably the best rivalry in the ACC.

Syracuse beat Clemson, 27-24, at the Carrier Dome in October 2017 and almost beat the Tigers in Death Valley last September. Syracuse led 16-7 at halftime and 23-13 in the fourth quarter. Clemson, however, came back to win, 27-23.

“It really tells the fans and the community and the university what we’re capable of doing when we’re all working together,” Babers said. “Clemson is a fantastic football team. Obviously based off of what happened last year, they don’t lose very often. They’re well-coached, they have fantastic athletes, and they run really complicated schemes. But if you stay together and you don’t care who gets the credit, every once in a while David gets to slay Goliath.”

Dino Babers excited for start of SU football season (localsyr.com; Infanti)

Just two practices remain in preseason camp and then on Friday, everyone’s attention will turn to the regular season opener, which is set for a week from this Saturday on the road at Liberty.

And there’s no getting around the fact that this is a highly-anticipated season. The program is facing its most optimistic expectations in about 20 years.

Syracuse is ranked in the preseason national poll for the first time since 1998. The Orange is also coming off a 10-win season for the first time in 17 years. There is also plenty of experience and talent on both sides of the ball.

Dino Babers spoke with Steve Infanti Tuesday afternoon. Babers says this team might be the best defense he’s ever had.

Holliday: Kick game success can make ACC teams truly special :: WRALSportsFan.com )wralsportsfan.com; Holliday)

Normally breaking in a new punter is not something a coach looks forward to. But NC State’s Dave Doeren seems really upbeat about his first-time punter. Of course, MacKenzie Morgan is not exactly new. “We're fortunate,” Doeren says, “with Mackenzie coming in, to bring him in a year earlier to follow AJ Cole, who in my opinion was a really good punter for us. He's one of the greatest human beings I've been around. For Mackenzie to get to see him, shadow him for a year, I'm excited for him.”

While Morgan got to see firsthand the awesome responsibility that falls on the shoulders of punters like Cole, he brings a different style to every punt formation.

Morgan hails from Down Under. “He can punt on the move, being a guy that was an Australian Rules player,” Doeren is quick to note. “But he can also sit in the pocket, directional punt. He's got a great personality. He's an older guy that has a lot of experience behind him.” And, Doeren says, Morgan has “a lot of ability.”

The Wolfpack, which has seen its share of kicking game struggles over the past decade, returns placekicker Chris Dunn, who set an NC State record for field goals and led the ACC in field goal percentage (23-26 for 88.5%). What’s more, NC State posted solid numbers covering punts and kickoffs. But Doeren is quick to point out “the return game is an area where we can get better.” To the rescue, transfer slot receiver Tabari Hines. Hines returned 24 punts during his freshman year at Wake Forest. Hines ultimately transferred first to Oregon, and then NC State.
Punt returns matter

Punt returns really matter in the ACC. At least they did last year, when a whopping 18 were taken to the house. No one is more acutely aware of this than Florida State’s Willie Taggart. The Seminoles’ legendary coach Bobby Bowden, along with Virginia Tech’s Frank Beamer, pretty much invented special teams in these parts, yet Taggart’s FSU return team produced just one of those 18 punt runbacks. Worse, the ‘Noles allowed a conference-worst 364 punt return yards.

“Special teams in particular, we should be better,” Taggart insists. “We have the talent. We got to be to the point where our special teams gives us a touchdown advantage on our opponents. There's no reason for us not to be that way.”

Virginia Tech's ACC Network facilities ready for channel's debut (roanoke.com; Gentry)

Virginia Tech is ready for its close-up.

The athletic department has spent $10 million to prepare for the launch of the ACC Network, adding equipment and converting facilities so that its games can air on the new TV channel. Production of Tech sporting events will now originate from two new control rooms in the south end zone portion of Lane Stadium.

“This theoretically ends the need to ever have to roll a TV truck in here,” said Eric Frey, Tech’s senior director for ACC Network operations. “Other than football, most of the broadcasts will be done from this facility, with the hope that a couple years down the road, maybe we start seeing some football games done in here [too].”

The ACC Network is a regular, linear TV channel — just like ESPN or CNN — that will debut Thursday. The ESPN-owned channel has deals to be carried on some TV providers, including the DirecTV satellite service, Shentel cable and Citizens cable.

The bowels of the south end zone complex are now home to two control rooms, an engineering room and offices. Virginia Tech began work last November to convert rooms that had previously been used for other purposes, such as for the Tech football team’s postgame press conferences.
But most of the $10 million has been spent on TV equipment, not for construction. Tech has bought everything from walls of TV monitors to replay machines to fiber technology.

“Each [ACC] school has met with ESPN on numerous occasions,” Frey said. “They’ve done site visits and have come in and said, ‘You need to build camera towers here, platforms here. You have to have so many strands of fiber to and from each venue.’”

Last 10 Years: SECCG vs. ACCCG (RX; HM)

Last 10 Years: SECCG vs. ACCCG

We've heard it all before - that the SEC is "deeper" than the ACC, that the ACC is "Clemson and everybody else", etc., etc., ad nauseum...

Over the last 10 years, here are the teams which have either won or participated in the conference championship games in the SEC and ACC for football:

SEC Champs: Alabama (6x), Auburn (2x), LSU, Georgia
Runner-ups: Georgia (3x), Florida (3x), Missouri (2x), S Carolina, Auburn

ACC Champs: Clemson (5x), Florida State (3x), Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech
Runner-ups: Georgia Tech (2x), Virginia Tech (2x), Clemson, FSU, Duke, UNC, Miami, Pitt

So if the ACC is "Clemson and everybody else", how much more so is the SEC "Alabama and everybody else" - the Tide have won more SECCGs than Clemson has ACCCGs!

Not only that, but look at the number of different teams participating: 7 SEC teams, 8 ACC teams.

Again, the conferences are neck-and-neck in virtually every measurable statistic (polls don't count, since those are opinions, not measurements). Head-to-head wins/losses are virtually even as well... as much as SEC don't want to admit it, there just isn't that much difference between ACC and SEC football.

Factoids - 8/21/19 (RX; HM)

Factoids - 8/21/19

From 17 amazing facts about the 2019 college football schedule, here are a few ACC-related...

By the time Florida and Miami kickoff the 2019 season this Saturday night in Orlando, it will have been 219 days since we’ve seen live college football.

1. BYU is the only FBS program to start the season with FOUR Power opponents [consecutive games ]... Four other programs come close by opening 2019 with three straight Power opponents: Clemson (Georgia Tech, Texas A&M, and at Syracuse), North Carolina (vs. South Carolina in Charlotte, Miami, and at Wake Forest), Vanderbilt and Hawaii.

3. MIAMI... will spend six straight weeks of the season at home
After the Hurricanes visit North Carolina on Sept. 7th they’ll return to Miami and stay all the way until their Oct. 26 game at Pitt... The downside is [they] will spend the later part of their season on the road – Miami plays four of its last five as away games...

5. NORTH CAROLINA and APPALACHIAN STATE will play exactly 79 years after their last meeting. Despite being separated by a mere 162 miles and hailing from the same state, the Tar Heels and Mountaineers haven’t met on the gridiron since the year before the United States entered World War II. In a twist of fate, their grand reunion (the longest wait of any matchup in 2019), is slated for Sept. 21, 2019, or precisely 79 years since the last time they played, on Sept. 21, 1940.

6. FIVE Teams are playing TWO FCS opponents
Though it’s commonplace for an FBS program to book a single game vs. an FCS school, having two such opponents is rare. Many times... due to a scheduling snafu... keep in mind that even though the NCAA doesn’t limit the number of FCS opponents an FBS program can schedule, only one win vs. an FCS opponent per season counts toward bowl eligibility... ARMY, EAST CAROLINA, FLORIDA, LIBERTY and VIRGINIA TECH (Furman and Rhode Island).

NYS Fair opening day forecast: Bring an umbrella, and watch for storms (PS; Coin)

Expect a hot, rainy and stormy opening day today for the New York State Fair.
While the threat of damaging storms has decreased, there’s still a chance for high winds and lightning. The high temperature could reach 82 degrees, and high humidity could make it feel like 86.

The National Weather Service predicts that a half-inch of rain will fall today, and if thunderstorms pass over the fairgrounds, that rain could be intense.
“The main concern will be potential for strong to severe thunderstorms as well as locally heavy rainfall that could result in isolated urban/small stream flooding,” the weather service said.
Storms have already started firing up in the Finger Lakes and on Tug Hill. The weather service has issued several alerts for those storms, including a severe thunderstorm warnings Oswego County. More alerts are likely this morning as the storms rumble through.

So this sounds like it took Carrier / United Technologies by surprise, and that they quickly sent it to their legal department. Hmmm, this is sure gonna be interesting!

You're late to the party:

Syracuse University Dome?

No, I saw it on their web site. I'm saying, "oh, Carrier obviously didn't know the university would do this." They were caught by surprise. That's why they issued the sternly worded response.

Those who were saying they were negotiating or revisiting the naming rights were perhaps looking ahead, because no negotiations have happened yet.

The University calling it just "The Dome" or "The Syracuse University Dome" (ugh, terrible name) as they do on the web site was a shot across the bow.

If they drop "Carrier", we should just call it "The Dome" until somebody steps up with a big check. That's what we all call it anyway. Everyone would know where you're talking about, because nobody else has one.
