Welcome to National Skyscraper Day!
Ingenious feats of engineering and architectural dexterity are on display in tall, multistoried buildings called skyscrapers, which we celebrate today. A confluence of factors led to the literal rise of these structures. For one, with increased urban commerce, as well as an increase in population density in urban areas, there was a need for them. Originally they were used for commercial purposes, but they are now often used as residential dwellings as well.
Another factor leading to their proliferation was the invention of the passenger elevator. The first one was installed in the Haughwout Department Store in New York City in 1857, and the first tall office building with one was the Equitable Life Building in New York City in 1870. A third factor, which ultimately made it possible for skyscrapers to be built, was the invention of the Bessemer process in the 1860s. This process paved the way for the mass production of steel, an alloy that is stronger and lighter than iron; steel was used to construct buildings and allowed them to be much taller.
The 10-story Home Insurance Company Building, completed in 1885, is usually seen as being the first skyscraper. Using steel girders and standing at 128 feet, it was designed by William Le Baron Jenney. Jenney's protégé was Louis H. Sullivan, another architect of early skyscrapers. It is on his birthday that National Skyscraper Day takes place.

Syracuse shutout Liberty 24-0 on Saturday in the 2019 season opener. Here are three things we learned from the game.
DEVITO HAS C GRADE FOR HIS FIRST START
In his first college start, Syracuse quarterback Tommy DeVito turned in a self-graded “C” performance.
The grade was a fair assessment, as DeVito threw for just 176 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions on 17-for-35 passing. His second interception was particularly frustrating with time winding down in the first half.
With 27 seconds left in the second quarter and the Orange at the Liberty 14-yard line, DeVito rolled to his right and forced a ball into double coverage, which was predictably picked off by Bejour Wilson.
The play likely cost SU at least 3 points and potentially more and went into halftime up 10-0. While it didn’t ultimately hurt SU’s bottom line against the Flames, it’s mistakes like that which may cost the Orange against stronger opponents like a week 2 matchup against Maryland or defending national champion Clemson in week 3.
But Syracuse head coach Dino Babers was more forgiving than DeVito in his post-game assessment.
“It’s his first start. He’s a gunslinger and he wants to go out there and take everybody on,” Babers said. “I’m sitting there going it’s cool to be a gunslinger, but the best gunslingers are old gunslingers. The way you become an old gunslinger is you don’t take everybody on, you take the guys on when you have to take them on. He’ll be more patient. He’ll be better in the next one.”
DEFENSIVE LINE DOMINATES
In the preseason, Syracuse’s defensive line was looked at as one of its top position groups. There was good reason for that, and it showed on Saturday night.
Syracuse combined for eight sacks and 14 overall tackles for loss, constantly harassing Liberty QB Stephen Calvert. Senior defensive end Kendall Coleman and tackle Josh Black led the way with two sacks each, while linebacker Kingsley Jonathan chipped in 1.5 sacks.

It's safe to say the 'sharp' bettors are all over Maryland for this weekend's game against Syracuse.
The point spread opened offshore on Sunday with Syracuse as a 4 1/2-point favorite, was released everywhere later Sunday at Syracuse - 2 1/2 and fell to a pick 'em. Typically, such a dramatic early move means the sharps -- professional handicappers and gamblers -- are throwing heavy money at one side. In this case, that would be the Terps, who might have opened some eyes with their 79-0 drubbing of Howard.
It's unlikely a win over a lower-level FCS program would move the needle much, but either way, Maryland (1-0) is now viewed as a toss-up against the 22nd-ranked Orange. Syracuse (1-0), which is likely to move up a spot or two when the AP Poll is released on Tuesday, is coming off a shutout of its own, a 24-0 win against Liberty. On paper, Syracuse, regarded by many as the second-best team in the ACC behind defending national champion Clemson, could be viewed as a solid favorite against a Maryland team picked to finish sixth in the seven-team Big Ten East. The Terps are aiming to prove that numbers on paper, though -- such as the 3.5 win-total afforded them by the oddsmakers before this season -- aren't accounting properly for their talent level.

The most anticipated Syracuse football season in two decades got off to a great start on Saturday night with a 24-0 shutout victory over Liberty in the season opener. It was far from a perfect performance, but still a dominant win against a Hugh Freeze coached team is nothing to scoff at and the nice thing about it all is that we learned a lot about what to expect from the Orange moving forward.
The Defense is Legit
Dino Babers said it time and time again before the season. He was very happy with how his defense looked in camp and thought that it would be the strength of his unit come the season opener. We gave a little bit of healthy skepticism before the season got underway and asked the question, “Just how good can the defense be”. The answer? Apparently really, really good.
The Orange were dominant defensively from whistle to whistle and did a lot of things that hadn’t done in quite some time. Their eight sacks were the most in a game for SU since they got to Miami (Ohio) for eight in 2006 and everybody got in on the fun. Seven different players had at least half a sack for the Orange and three of them (Lakiem Williams, Josh Black and Kendall Coleman) had multiple. The defense also pitched a shutout for the first time since the 2015 opener against Rhode Island and for the first time in a true road game since 1991. That is flat out impressive.
The worry spots of interior defensive line and linebacker both looked fantastic and the secondary was also impressive with the further emergence of redshirt sophomore corner Ifeatu Melifonwu. Simply put, the defense exceeded even the lofty expectations. Maryland will be a tougher test in week two, but if they continue to look the way they did against the Flames, watch out.
Tommy DeVito is Not Perfect
Tommy Touchdown. The Golden Boy. The most highly touted quarterback recruit since Donovan McNabb. Those are just a few of the phrases that had been used to describe Tommy DeVito prior to the opener and the expectations going into the game were understandably pretty high. Unlike the defense, DeVito didn’t exactly live up to those expectations on Saturday.
The redshirt sophomore completed just 17 of his 35 passes (less than half) for 176 yards and tossed two interceptions in his first ever start. Some of that may be contributed to the pressure he felt early in the game, but there were other plays where he looked flat out panicked and made some really poor decisions. There were some overthrows as well which we knew could be a problem because DeVito has such a big arm.
To be fair, it was his first career start, but much like the Notre Dame game last year, DeVito’s performance at Liberty this past weekend proves that the transition from Eric Dungey to the young gunslinger is going to be far from perfect. He’s not going to be the perfect college quarterback right away which, with the hype that surrounded his ascension to the helm of the offense, might have been the expectation. He’s still very, very talented, just didn’t perform as well as you might have hoped against a first-year FBS team.

ON THE SYRACUSE LOSS
“Obviously, I never like to lose, nobody does. It’s particularly disappointing offensively the way we performed and didn’t capitalize early on to get us some points. I can’t remember the last time we were that inept offensively. I assure you that will be a hot topic as we move forward.”
ON THE DEFENSE
“Extremely proud of our defense. To go from what stats said they were last year to how they played a very good Syracuse team I thought was just remarkable. Ralf (Rusins) made 9 tackles and really dominated the line of scrimmage when he was in there. All four corners – Bejour, Emanuel, Jimmy, and Tre Clarke – just really locked down their outside deep game. Elijah Benton was all over the field, played a great game. Really pleased, hopefully we can build off of that and continue to be stingy giving up points. Outside of the couple of 3rd and 10 screens, the plan was solid. Scott (Symons) called a great game.”
ON THE OFFENSE
“AGG played phenomenal. (Dontae) Duff played pretty good. Outside of that, no one received a grade to which we would think was a successful outing and they know that. They understand it. We were playing a very good defensive front. That front was talented and their backers were better than we knew with the transfers they got. Their corners were very good too. I have no idea if we would have won the game, but if we would have gotten those early 10 points that we had a legit shot to get, I sure would have liked to seen kind of what happened with the confidence on both sides of the field.”
ON LOUISIANA
“That one’s in the trash (Syracuse game). We’ve got to get ready for the next one. We’ve got a difficult task down at University of Louisiana. Billy Napier, I’ve known him for years, have great respect for him as a man. He’s a great person of faith and a heck of a football coach and he’s doing a great job there in year 2. Louisiana has athletes throughout the state, they don’t have to go very far to get their team and to recruit them and it shows on the tape. Played an SEC team last week to a 10 point game which I’m sure they wanted to win it but they were in the game and had a chance. It has my attention. I have no idea what’s going to happen in the Sun Belt, but I bet you they’re in the thick of it. I think we’re playing a possible conference champion.”

Hugh Freeze spent two seasons coaching in the Sun Belt Conference with Arkansas State in 2010 and 2011. He was the Red Wolves’ offensive coordinator in 2010 before being promoted to head coach the following season, so he is acutely aware of the atmosphere Liberty faces Saturday evening against Louisiana at Cajun Field.
“If you haven’t been there, they show up,” Freeze said Monday. “They show up for that game in numbers and droves, and they’ve had a good time all day before they get to kickoff. It’s a hostile place to play. I’ve been down there once and it was hostile and we were fortunate to get out of there with a win, but it was sure difficult.”
Saturday night’s matchup could serve as a much better barometer for where the Liberty program is currently in Freeze’s first season at the helm. The Flames lost 24-0 to 22nd-ranked Syracuse, a Power 5 program that is expected to challenge reigning national champion Clemson for supremacy in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Liberty doesn’t play another power conference program until Nov. 23 at Virginia, but many consider the Nov. 9 trip to BYU as another test against a team often said in the same breath as Notre Dame as successful independent programs.
“I think Year 1 is hard to tell what the barometer is really until you kind of get a roster that you feel like is made up of similar type recruited players as the schools that you’re facing,” Freeze said. “Obviously I love the kids that we have here and I love the effort that they’re giving us, and I think we’re going to win some football games this year.
“It’s kind of hard in Year 1 to say exactly how we match up with a school that’s been at the G5 level for a while. That’s hard for me to guess and hard for me to say. Every game is a barometer for sure.
“I thought the barometer the other night was we played a Top 25 team here in our first game and I thought it easily could have been a 10- or a seven-point game had we performed halfway decent offensively.
“There will be another barometer this week against one of the Sun Belt’s better teams traditionally. I coached in that conference, and Arkansas State and Louisiana and App State are three of the ones that you always think are going to be at the top of this very difficult place to play.”
Freeze was offensive coordinator in 2010 when Arkansas State visited Cajun Field, a game the Ragin’ Cajuns won 31-24. The Red Wolves returned the favor the following season with Freeze as the head coach, a 30-21 triumph that was part of an eight-win conference season.
Not many passing grades
Freeze and his staff graded each player based on how they performed against Syracuse. The Flames coach heaped praise on most of the defensive players ranging from all four cornerbacks, safety Elijah Benton and the linemen.
On offense? That’s a different story entirely, with wide receiver Antonio Gandy-Golden and right guard Dontae Duff receiving passing grades.
“AGG played phenomenal. Duff played pretty good up front,” he said. “Outside of that, no one received a grade to which we would think was a successful outing. And they know that. They understand it.”

Leading up to his debut as the full-time head coach of Maryland football, Mike Locksley talked to his team about its one chance to make a first impression in the season opener against Howard.
To say the Terps made a strong impression is an understatement following their 79-0 trouncing of the Bison that featured the second-most points scored in a single game in program history.
Yes, Howard is an FCS opponent. Yes, it was just the first game of the season. Yes, there’s a very tough schedule to come, starting with the Syracuse matchup next week. But there’s no denying what Saturday’s performance meant to this program and the confidence it gives the team moving forward.
“The way we played and put on for Coach Locks in his debut today, we were real proud of that,” wide receiver Brian Cobbs said. “Really, I feel like we just came out and showed the nation what we can do with the new offensive scheme. … We’re real confident in what we can do.”
While it was a change of pace to see Maryland in this opening matchup after starting its season against Texas in 2017 and ‘18, it’s pretty common for FBS schools to play FCS programs in their first game. In Week 1 alone, 40 games included matchups between the two levels of Division 1.
But looking across the other opening FBS/FCS matchups in which the FCS opponent was unranked, there isn’t a single point differential better than Maryland over Howard.

Syracuse (1-0) vs. Maryland (1-0) Game Preview
Why Syracuse Will Win
The Syracuse pass rush picked up where it left off after a terrific 2018.
It might have been the Liberty offensive line trying to stop the tremendous Orange defensive ends, but it was coming from all sides in the 24-0 win over the Flames.
Lakeim Williams led the way with 11 tackles and 1.5 sacks, but the rest of the key parts got into the act, too, with eight sacks and 14 tackles for loss. The Terps didn’t give up a sack last week against Howard, but … it was Howard.
Don’t totally dismiss the SU win over Liberty, just because it’s Liberty. The Flames have a dangerous offense with a whole lot of explosion, and while the SU secondary allowed one big play, it was able to stuff everything against the run. Thanks to the sack, LU finished with -4 net yards, and only came up with 49 outside of all of the sacks.
Why Maryland Will Win
Welcome back, Josh Jackson.
The Terps got in the scrimmage they needed under new head coach Mike Locklsey, rolling out 56 first half points on the way to the 79-0 win over Howard. Jackson – the former Virginia Tech quarterback – was great from the start, throwing for 245 yards and four scores.
The ground game rolled at will, too, coming up with 317 yards and five touchdowns, but the win was all about getting the passing game to click.
On the other side, Syracuse’s new starting quarterback Tommy DeVito struggle on the road. He didn’t hit half of his passes, couldn’t do much down the field, and ended up throwing two picks. The Orange got the win, but in this, as long as the Terp offensive line can hold up and Jackson can get the ball out of his hands in a hurry, the chains should keep moving.
– “Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released
What’s Going To Happen
The Maryland defense will do its part – it came up with eight sacks against Howard – even though the early storyline will be the devastating Syracuse defensive front owning the first quarter.
Can DeVito be a whole lot better and stronger than he was in Week 1? Not really, and Moe Neal and the ground game won’t be able to pick up the slack. It’ll be a lower-scoring game than expected, and it’s not going to be anything pretty.
The Terps will be happy to take the hard-fought win, though, as Jackson outplays DeVito.

With Maryland Football Visit, Rachel Baribeau Shares 'Holistic Approach' To Becoming Better Man (pressboxonline.com; Selby)
Rachel Baribeau was standing in front of dozens of Maryland football players who were all eager to speak with her. She had done her talking; it was now time to listen.
It's a normal occurrence for the SiriusXM College host and assault survivor to have as many as 50 players talk to her personally about what they're doing to become better people, or kings, as Baribeau likes to put it, after she speaks with them about a wide range of topics ranging from sexual assault to domestic violence.
That was the same case when she visited the Terps.
"[Head coach] Mike Locksley called me ... and he said we want to get you here, let's figure it out, we must do this," Baribeau said on Glenn Clark Radio Aug. 22.
In the wake of the Baylor University sexual assault scandal in 2016, Baribeau revealed in an essay about a broken culture in college football that she was an assault survivor. She has told of an instance when she and several other couples were together when the man she was dating became angry.
"He dragged me from one end of the house to the other by my hair," she said to a team last year. "I screamed bloody murder and no one came to help. Three men, and none of them [helped]."
Since then, she has visited campuses as an advocate for assault survivors and spoken to college football players about how they can become better people.
"It really is so much more than domestic violence," Baribeau said on GCR. "My message is a holistic approach to the whole man or woman. We talk about purpose, passion, platform, how we view and treat women."
Like much of the sports world, Baribeau is all too familiar with the hardships Maryland players have experienced the past 18 months with the death of offensive lineman Jordan McNair, who died two weeks after suffering heatstroke during a team workout last spring. She normally talks with head coaches beforehand to make the conversation a little more personal for each team, and while she didn't touch on the McNair tragedy much, she still did so in a way that seemed appropriate to her.

ANALYSIS/OPINION:
Mike Locksley passed his first big test as Maryland’s football coach: He didn’t get UNLV’d.
The Terrapins played host to Howard over the weekend and pounded the visitors in a 79-0 season-opening rout. UNLV likely anticipated a similar breeze when it hosted Howard in Week 1 two years ago. Instead, the Bison pulled off a historic, 43-40 upset that garnered national attention and helped freshman quarterback Caylin Newtown emerge from his older brother’s shadow.
As if losing to a 45-point underdog wasn’t humiliation enough, UNLV also cut a $600,000 check for Howard’s troubles. Maryland only had to pay the Bison $350,000 to make the 25-minute trip from D.C.
Both of those “guarantee” games amount to peanuts in college football’s grand scheme.
USA Today in a recently published rundown of appearance fees for more than 250 games involving at least one Football Bowl Subdivision school this season, reports that $150 million will change hands.

https://www.onthebanks.com/2019/9/2/20844375/2019-big-ten-football-power-rankings-ohio-state-michigan-nebraska-wisconsin-iowa-rutgers-penn-state (onthebanks.com; Gaudios)
At last, an explanation as to how Howard could be so bad...
The Big Ten conference had a representatively strong Week 1, with an overall record of 12-2. Of the losses, one was understandable (Northwestern at Stanford) and one was downright strange (Purdue losing to Nevada on the road, on a last-second, 56-yard field goal kicked by a freshman walk-on).
Here is the first set of Big Ten Power Rankings for the 2019 season. To level set, I’ll be sharing with you some ground rules for how to handle these rankings:
1) Rankings are created using a combination of past results (weighted for strength of schedule), mostly using the eye test but with some input from ESPN’s S&P+ efficiency ratings.
2) Rankings are representative of a point in time, not future results. Rankings will be updated every week after the slate of games is completed.
3) You can assume a team would beat every team beneath them at a neutral site. So #8 would beat #9-14 at a neutral site, #9 would beat #10-14, etc.
4) Where two teams seem tied in every way imaginable, I default to the method used in a classic 1989 episode of“Perfect Strangers” (i.e., whichever team’s mascot would win in a fair fight gets the higher rating). I’m mostly kidding on this one, but I reserve the right to use it as necessary.
Without further delay, here are the Big Ten Conference Power Rankings after Week 1 of the 2019 College Football season.
14. Rutgers Scarlet Knights (1-0, 48-21 victory over UMASS in Week 1, at Iowa Week 2). There were positive developments in our Week 1 victory over a weak UMASS team, but we are going to remain in the bottom spot until we see continued signs of demonstrable progress. The easiest way to move to #13 (or even #12) in these rankings would be to give Iowa a tough fight next Saturday on the road in Iowa City.
13. Illinois Fighting Illini (1-0, 42-3 victory over Akron in Week 1, at UCONN Week 2). Akron’s not a strong opponent (they’re about the same as UMASS in terms of S&P+), so Illinois gets the edge over Rutgers for 13th position due to a stronger overall defensive performance in their game. I’d expect Illinois to win in Week 2 against the bottom dweller of the American Athletic Conference in Storrs, so things look (relatively) up in Champaign this week for Lovie Smith’s crew. The long view isn’t fantastic, however.
12. Purdue Boilermakers (0-1, 34-31 loss to Nevada in Week 1, vs. Vanderbilt Week 2). Did you see the finish to this game? If you haven’t yet, do yourself a favor and leave this thread, watch the linked short video above – it’s less than a minute -- and come back. What a crazy finish in Reno this week. Purdue fans are rightly upset about the start of their season – they’ll probably feel better after they undoubtedly shock Penn State later this season. Purdue is a weird, idiosyncratic team.
11. Northwestern Wildcats (0-1, 17-7 loss to Stanford in Week 1, ODDLY TIMED BYE Week 2). The Fighting Wilbons have to be concerned about their lack of offense, after benching their starting QB (Clemson transfer and former five-star recruit Hunter Johnson) and seeing their backup QB get seriously injured in yesterday’s loss. Based on S&P+ efficiency ratings, Stanford’s a bit overrated (more of a 35-40 rated team), and Northwestern could have played cleaner football.
10. Maryland Terrapins (1-0, 79-0 victory over Howard in Week 1, vs. Syracuse Week 2). I would have put Maryland #12 pre-season. They move up a little after thoroughly stomping a weak FCS team in Howard, but the true test will come next weekend in College Park against a nationally ranked Syracuse Orange team (it hurts typing that last sentence). Fun fact: Howard’s head football coach is former Rutgers OC Ron Prince. I wish him luck with Howard.

I'm not going to belabor this analysis, but I do have two observations:

2) Notre Dame still looks very, very good - I could see the Irish returning to a New Year's bowl if not the playoffs itself.

Central New Yorkers who heard a loud, explosive-like sound around 5:15 p.m. probably heard a sonic boom from a meteor Labor Day evening, an expert said.
A witness in the town of Clay told syracuse.com the noise was a single, loud “boom.” Several people called 911 to report what they’d heard. A few reported seeing a “fireball” to the American Meteor Society.
That evidence points to a sonic boom created by a meteor burning up in the earth’s atmosphere, said Robert Lunsford from the American Meteor Society.
“This is nothing to worry about,” Lunsford said. “It happens all the time.”
Lunsford said most meteors that enter the earth’s atmosphere are the size of a pebble and go unnoticed. Occasionally, a meteor the size of a softball or larger enters the atmosphere, and can create a light brighter than the moon -- and an audible sound, if the meteor burns up low enough in the atmosphere, Lunsford said.
Lunsford said seven people across Upstate New York, Pennsylvania and Canada made official reports to the American Meteor Society saying they saw a fireball.
He said reports indicated the meteor likely burned up over Lake Ontario, maybe less than 40 miles high, based on the sound reported. He said it’s possible some of the material from the meteor made it to earth’s surface, but he said it’s likely that would have ended up in Lake Ontario.
