Welcome to TV Dinner Day!

National TV Dinner Day is observed annually on September 10th. In 1953, C.A. Swanson & Sons changed the prepackaged meal business forever. Introducing the TV Dinner revolutionized frozen food.
In 1962, Swanson stopped using the name TV Dinner. However, in the United States, the term remains synonymous with any prepackaged dinner purchased frozen from a store and heated at home.

The first Swanson TV Dinner consisted of a Thanksgiving meal of turkey, cornbread dressing, peas, and sweet potatoes. The original tray was made of aluminum and each food item had separate compartments. The dinner had to be heated in the oven. Most meals cooked in the oven for 25 minutes. Today, nearly all frozen food trays can be cooked in the microwave or in a conventional oven.
The original product sold for 98 cents. The first year, Swanson’s production estimate was 5,000 dinners. To their surprise, Swanson far exceeded that amount. In the first year, they sold more than 10 million of them.
  • 1960 – Swanson added desserts to a new four-compartment tray.
  • 1964 – Night Hawk name originated from the Night Hawk steak houses that operated in Austin, Texas from 1939 through 1994. The original diners were open all night catering to the late-night crowd. The restaurants produced the first frozen Night Hawk TV dinner in 1964.
  • 1969 – The first TV breakfasts were marketed. Great Starts Breakfasts and breakfast sandwiches followed later.
  • 1973 – The first Swanson Hungry-Man dinners were marketed; these were larger portions of its regular dinner products.
  • 1986 – The first microwave oven-safe trays were marketed.
  • 1986 – The Smithsonian Institute inducted the original Swanson TV Dinner tray into the Museum of American History.

Syracuse coach Dino Babers knows there’s nothing like a knockout to get your attention.

“When you wake up, the blues are blues, the reds are reds. Everything seems clearer than ever before,” Babers said Monday, less than 48 hours after his Orange were soundly beaten 63-20 at Maryland. “It’s like rebooting your entire computer. It’s really kind of eye-opening.

“We’re going to see how we do. Maybe we reboot. Maybe everything’s OK.”

Maybe.

Maybe not.

The answer likely will come very soon. The Orange (1-1, 0-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) host No. 1 Clemson (2-0, 1-0) in their home opener on Saturday night. It’s a key matchup in the Atlantic Division between the defending national champion Tigers and the only ACC team to beat them in the past two seasons.

At least the Orange might have their first sellout crowd in the Carrier Dome in nearly two decades — less than 175 tickets remained on Monday (capacity is 49,262), though all were season passes.

“I think we have a big task,” Babers said. “What we just went through, that was big. And now we have an opportunity against the best team in the country, so we’ll have to see how we do.”

No. 1 Clemson (2-0, 1-0 ACC) at Syracuse 1-1 (0-0)
When: 7:30 p.m. Saturday
Where: Carrier Dome (49,250), Syracuse, N.Y.
TV: ABC

Line: Clemson by 27.5

THREE STORYLINES
1. Syracuse has played Clemson as well as any team in the country the past two years, including Alabama. The Tigers suffered a 27-24 loss in their last trip to the Carrier Dome in 2017 and had to rally from behind for a 27-23 home win last year. The 2017 loss was Clemson’s most recenter loss in the regular season. Syracuse’s hurry-up offense has caused the Clemson defense some problems in the past, and the Orange defense has surprisingly managed to slow Clemson’s offense down some as well.

2. Clemson has had its starting quarterback knocked out of the game against the Orange each of the past two years, with Kelly Bryant going down in 2017 and Trevor Lawrence being injured last season. As good of a backup quarterback as Chase Brice is, the Tigers would like to be able to play their starter for a full game in 2019, or at least until if and when the game gets out of hand.
3. Syracuse was embarrassed last weekend against Maryland, falling 63-20 on the road. The Orange entered the season ranked in the top 25 before flopping against the Terps. It will be interesting to see if the team that was ranked in the preseason shows up against Clemson and can give the Tigers a challenge or if the Orange are in for a long season.

THREE SYRACUSE PLAYERS TO WATCH
1. Defensive end Kendall Coleman has eight tackles, three tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks through the first two weeks of the season and knows how to create pressure up front. Clemson co-offensive coordinator Tony Elliott believes with Coleman and Alton Robinson Syracuse has two of the best defensive ends the Tigers will face all year.
2. Safety Andre Cisco was a freshman All-American in 2018 and is off to a strong start this season. He already has two interceptions for the Orange, along with 15 tackles.
3. Receiver Trishton Jackson had to sit out last season after transferring from Michigan State but has impressed through his first two games with the Orange. Jackson, who started four games at Michigan State in 2017, leads the Orange with 10 catches for 178 yards and two touchdowns.

The buzz around the Syracuse football team was palpable. Expectations were high and excitement levels were even higher.

In 2018, the Orange won ten games for the first time in seventeen years. They had come into the 2019 college football season at No. 22 in the Associated Press Top-25, and had shutout the Liberty Flames 24-0 in Week One. Syracuse's week two date with Maryland did not lack signifcance, but many Orange faithful had their sights set on week three, Syracuse's home opener against top-ranked Clemson, and a rematch of Syracuse's dome-storming upset victory two years ago.
Dino Babers summed up week two as well as anyone: "This is definitely humble pie."

To say Maryland provided a reality check would be understating it, as the Terrapins toppled the Orange 63-20 on Saturday afternoon. The Maryland defense held Syracuse to just three yards and a punt on the game's opening series. Syracuse's defense did not return the favor. Terrapin quarterback Josh Jackson (21-38, 296 yards, 3 TD, 1 INT) orchestrated an immaculate opening drive. After going 3-3 for 63 yards and finding Tyler Mabry in the end zone, Jackson gave Maryland a lead they would not surrender all game.

http://dailyorange.com/2019/09/running-backs-defense-weeks-stock-watch/ (DO; Black)

Syracuse was trounced by No. 21 Maryland (2-0), 63-20, on Saturday, not once leading the game.

SU was just a one-point underdog heading into the Week 2 contest, but was outplayed from the opening kickoff, as the Terrapins scored touchdowns on their first three possessions. While redshirt sophomore Tommy DeVito and Syracuse’s passing game finally found some success, there were few positives to take away from the Orange’s worst loss since 2017.
Here’s whose stock is up or down after Syracuse’s loss to Maryland.

STOCK UP

Just a week ago, DeVito was in the “stock down” section due to his underwhelming season-opener against Liberty. On Saturday, however, DeVito was the motor that kept the Syracuse offense running, throwing for a career-high 330 yards in addition to three touchdowns. He was far from perfect, committing a few mental mistakes including one interception, but it was a step in the right direction. Now, the redshirt sophomore must improve his decision-making outside of the pocket and stop committing costly turnovers.

It seemed like every time the Orange stagnated offensively on Saturday, they decided to just throw the ball up to Jackson and hope for something good to happen. And more often than not, it worked. Jackson had the best game of his college career against the Terrapins, hauling in 7 catches for 157 yards and a pair of scores. He was also responsible for SU’s longest play of the game, a 52-yard catch-and-run touchdown during which he shook off a pair of defenders.

STOCK DOWN

After accounting for all three touchdowns last week against Liberty, the Orange’s running game seemed like one of the strong points of their team. Despite the success as a whole, senior Moe Neal’s 42-yard score was the only real explosive play Syracuse had on the ground against Liberty. SU averaged of 4.4 yards per carry in Week 1 compared to just 2.4 versus Maryland. On Saturday, the Orange’s trio of running backs had a long rush of just 13 yards and never found any consistency.

Syracuse’s defensive front as a whole could very well be in this space this week, but Robinson, its best player, had arguably the worst game among the group. SU’s preseason first-team all-ACC defensive end lived up to his billing against the Flames in the season opener, recording five tackles including 1.5 for loss and half a sack. That success disappeared versus the Terrapins, who used a combination of run-pass options and quick throws to negate the presence of Robinson and the rest of the Orange defensive linemen. Robinson, in turn, garnered just one statistic (an assisted tackle) during the 32:07 of game time that Maryland’s offense had the ball.

Syracuse University announced on Monday morning that fewer than 175 tickets remain for Saturday's showdown between Syracuse and #1 Clemson.

It's the first time the #1 team in the nation has come to the Dome since Clemson did in 2015, but now of course, the Orange is coming off a 10-win season.

There will be differences, both in how many fans will be there and things you'll notice on your way up.

For starters, SU will open parking lots at 3:00 p.m., saying that all West lots (below the Dome on the hill) are sold out. Shuttles from Skytop and Manley Field House begin at 4:00 p.m.
In fact, they're expecting so many fans to park at Skytop, the band Country Swagg will be performing from 3:00-6:30 p.m.
As you leave your parking lot, whether you're walking or taking a shuttle you'll notice some changes immediately.
The chronicles of "Walt" the crane have been logged on social media for a few days, now "Walt" has a friend on the back side of the Dome.

If you enter through Gates N or P at the Dome, there will be construction areas to be aware of.

For the fun side of things, when you make it to the Quad, the "Cuse on the Quad" event will be in full swing with performances from national recording artist Eric Chesser at 4:00 p.m. and the SU Marching Band at 5:45.

Syracuse football head coach Dino Babers provided some injury updates ahead of the Clemson matchup. Here are all the details and what it means.

It doesn’t appear the Syracuse football squad will be at full strength heading into the Week 3 matchup vs the Clemson Tigers.
Syracuse football head coach Dino Babers spoke to the media during his weekly Monday presser and provided some grim news, per Stephen Bailey of Syracuse.com:

"I would say that the chances are he (Sam Heckel) won’t play, but I’m not ruling him out.”

In the Week 2 matchup vs the Maryland Terrapins, the Orange was without its starting center, Sam Heckel, who didn’t travel with the team.
With Heckel unlikely to go, it’ll force the musical chairs to continue against the best team in the country, hardly ideal.
Which means Syracuse will throw their redshirt freshman tackle Carlos Vettorello in on the left side, grad-transfer Ryan Alexander will plug into the right side. Airon Servais played his first two years with the Orange at center and will return there during Heckel’s absence.
In our one-game sample size of this offensive line group, it wasn’t a seamless transition.

The Terps forced four sacks, five tackles for loss, and forced Tommy DeVito to do things he didn’t want to.

To make matters worse, Heckel isn’t the only injury we are monitoring heading into this pivotal Clemson tilt. Syracuse has been without its starting defensive tackle McKinley Williams for the first two games of the season, it could extend into a third straight absence.

“I’m waiting to see the doctors,” Babers said via Stephen Bailey of Syracuse.com. “We’re going to see what happens.”

http://orangefizz.net/2019/09/a-look-back-at-the-1959-national-champion-syracuse-orange/ (orangefizz.net; Raucci)

Even after a disastrous performance against Maryland that took SU out of both the AP and Coaches’ polls, this Saturday’s matchup against No. 1 Clemson still has a ton of hype surrounding it.
The Dome is sold out and expected to be teetering on record-breaking numbers. Heck, the top team in the country/defending national champion is going to be in Central New York, but that’s not the only reason to be excited about this weekend.

Two more big honors are set to go down during the game as the program’s all-time leader in sacks, Tim Green (more on him later this week), is set to have his number retired at halftime, while the 1959 National Championship team will celebrate its 50th anniversary during the game.

It’s going to be a momentous occasion for the greatest team in the history of Syracuse football and the only champion in the program’s history. So with that coming up on Saturday, let’s give you a little primer and fill you in on exactly what that 1959 team was all about

The Coach

The only other head men that can give Ben Schwartzwalder a run for his money in terms of how much they meant to Syracuse football and what they accomplished at its helm are Paul Pasqualoni and Dick MacPherson and even they pale in comparison to Schwartzwalder. The College Football Hall of Famer is the program’s all-time leader in wins and has the second-best winning percentage among SU mentors who have coached at least 100 games behind only Pasqualoni. The 1959 season was Schwartzwalder’s 11th at the helm of the program and saw him win his lone National Coach of the Year Award. He’d coach some of the greatest players in SU history in his 25 years with the program with the likes of Jim Brown, Floyd Little, Ernie Davis and Larry Csonka passing through Central New York in his tenure. On top of all those accolades, he was a pioneer in the recruiting and development of black football players and was instrumental in molding college football into what it is today. He is a legend through and through.

The Star

Gerhard Schwedes was an integral part of the offensive monster that led SU to the Cotton Bowl Victory which clinched the National Championship and actually led the Orange in yards from scrimmage, but far and away the superstar of the 1959 squad was Ernie Davis. Perhaps the second greatest player to ever don the Orange and White behind only Jim Brown. By modern standards, Davis’ 1959 numbers aren’t elite, but he still dominated every game he played in. The sophomore ran for 686 yards (7.0 ypc) and added another 94 on the ground. He’d go on to have even more impressive seasons as a junior and senior and became the first black athlete to win the Heisman Trophy in 1961. Davis was the 1st overall pick in the 1962 NFL Draft, but never took an NFL snap as he tragically died from leukemia just five months after being drafted. Much like Schwartzwalder, Davis’ impact goes far beyond what he did on the field and he paved the way for generations of black athletes that would follow him.

https://caneswarning.com/2019/09/09/miami-football-schedule-works-in-their-favor-to-win-acc-coastal/ (caneswarning.com; Rubenstein)

For all the consternation that the 0-2 start has created for the Miami football team, their 2019 schedule works in their favor to win the acc coastal division.

Starting the 2019 season against Florida at a neutral site and at North Carolina was a difficult proposition for a young Miami football team. The Hurricanes began 2019 with a first-year head coach, redshirt freshmen at quarterback and right tackle and a true freshman at left tackle.

The expectations because if the excitement created by Manny Diaz, the transfer portal and The New Miami we’re a lot to ask from the Hurricanes fan base. Miami still has its 2019 goals in front of them. Diaz has preached patience and deserves that respect.

If Miami is started off the season with home games against FCS and group of five opponents the fan base would have been pumping up Diaz and how great he is. It would have been a false narrative.

Even Diaz has stated we learned more about the Miami football team by opening with a pit of tough games against the Gators and Tar Heels. After playing their first two games away from Hard Rock Stadium, the Hurricanes have this next five games at home spread over the next six weeks.

https://www.fromtherumbleseat.com/2019/9/9/20855830/acc-power-rankings-football-week-2 (fromtherumbleseat.com; Gordon)

Yesterday was a very long and fun day of football. Miami and UNC went to the wire. As did Nebraska-Colorado, Army-Michigan, BYU-Tennessee, and most amusingly Florida State and Louisiana-Monroe. Tons of fun football all day long (even after I went to bed). Let’s start on the rankings.
1 - #1 Clemson Tigers (2-0, 1-0)
Clemson didn’t blow out Texas A&M at home, but they did win comfortably. Clemson got off to a slow start in the game against the Aggies, before slowly turning on the jets. Many thought Clemson’s defense would take a step back after losing a whole ton of experience, but instead they absolutely shut down Jimbo’s team holding them to just 3 points until a garbage time touchdown. Offensively we didn’t see the fireworks many expected with A&M holding Trevor Lawrence and Travis Etienne largely in check. It doesn’t matter too much. This looks to be the most difficult game all season for the Tigers. They get Syracuse next week which looks a whole lot easier than it did three days ago.

Last Week: Win 24-10 vs. #12 Texas A&M
Next Week: Saturday at 7:30 at Syracuse

2 - #25 Virginia Cavaliers (2-0, 1-0)
Virginia took it easy this week with a breezy 52-17 win against William and Mary. Bryce Perkins played shaky, but they had no issues moving it on the ground. They sit firmly in the second spot in this ranking due to Syracuse blowing it this week. Virginia now looks forward to a hyped home game against Florida State.

Last Week: Win 52-17 vs. William and Mary
Next Week: Saturday at 7:30 pm vs. Florida State

3 - North Carolina Tar Heels (2-0, 1-0)
Mack Brown’s UNC team and 4th quarter comebacks. Who’d have thought? For the second week in a row the Heels made a fantastic comeback behind freshman quarterback Sam Howell. Their final drive saw the Heels convert a 4th and 17, drop an easy touchdown, and finally finish off the drive with a fantastic catch right along the sideline complete with a toe drag to put North Carolina up 28-25 with 1 minute left. They then let Miami move the ball down the field into the edge of field goal range, but their 49-yard attempt missed and UNC hung on. For the second week in a row UNC won a thriller against a tough team. Howell was 16/24 for 274 yards and 2 touchdowns and running back Javonte Williams ran for 74 yards on 10 carries. The defense played fine, but not exceptionally. This is a team to watch. The Heels don’t get a break after two tough games heading to Wake Forest this weekend. They are the biggest threat to Virginia in the Coastal, but unlike Virginia they have to play Clemson.

This Week: Win 28-25 vs. Miami
Next Week: Friday at 7 at Wake Forest

4 - North Carolina State Wolfpack (2-0)
The Wolfpack have had a very easy schedule so far after beating Western Carolina 41-0 on Saturday. They have also not had any issues whatsoever dispatching their competition. Matthew McKay had 200 yards and a touchdown on 18-28 passing and Zonovan Knight had 18 carries for 119 yards. Defensively they held the Catamounts to just 106 yards offensively. This is a team to watch...once they eventually play somebody. Next week they head to Morgantown, West Virginia to take on the rebuilding Mountaineers. They really should win that one.

This Week: Win 41-0 vs. Western Carolina
Next Week: Saturday at noon at West Virginia

5 - Boston College Eagles (2-0, 1-0)
Boston College took an easy week this week with a home game against Richmond. The Eagles coasted 45-13 against the Spiders. Anthony Brown had another strong day with 163 yards on 8-14 passing and three touchdowns. He looks like he’s taken a big step forward. AJ Dillon had 86 yards on 17 carries. Defenses are really keying in on him this year. BC’s schedule gets a little bit harder as the Eagles welcome Kansas on Friday.

This Week: Win 45-13 vs. Richmond
Next Week: Friday at 7:30 pm vs. Kansas

6 - Wake Forest Demon Deacons (2-0)
Last week Wake had a nailbiter against Utah State. This week they decided to win in easier fashion at Rice. It was close early, but then Wake pulled away for a relatively easy 41-21 win. Jamie Newman had 312 yards on 21/27 passing for three touchdowns. Receiver Scotty Washington 158 yards on 7 receptions and 2 touchdowns. The team had 5.7 yards per rush. This team has a great offense, but the defense is worrisome. They now face a real test with North Carolina coming to town.

This Week: Win 41-21 at Rice
Next Week: Friday at 7 vs. North Carolina

7 - Virginia Tech Hokies (1-1, 0-1)
Well, at least they didn’t lose to Old Dominion this year. They avoided last year’s embarrassing fate with a kinda comfortable 31-17 win over the Monarchs. Ryan Willis was better with 272 yards passing and two touchdowns, but the team could not move the ball on the ground. The defense stifled ODU’s passing game, but did give up some on the ground. They get another easy game next week as Furman comes to town.

This Week: Win 31-17 vs. Old Dominion
Next Week: Saturday at noon vs. Furman

8 - Miami Hurricanes (0-2, 0-1)
Miami may be 0-2, but they also had chances to win in the waning seconds of both games against pretty good teams. Against UNC the offense has a whole lot to like. Jarren Williams made smart decisions although he wasn’t exactly airing it out. He had 309 yards passing on 30/39 attempts and two touchdowns. They had no trouble on the ground either with running backs DeeJay Dallas and Cam’Ron combining for 24 carries for 167 yards. But, Williams fumbled the ball twice (both recovered by Miami) and was sacked four times and hurried 7 more. The defense couldn’t get a big stop when they needed it. This team is capable of taking a step up, but will they?

This Week: Lose 28-25 at North Carolina
Next Week: Saturday at 4 pm vs. Bethune-Cookman

9 - Syracuse Orange (1-1)
Wow. Wow. Just...wow. I wasn’t as high on the Orange as most people, but I believed this defense would be really good. Instead, they got blown off the field by the Maryland Terrapins. UMD hung 63 on the Orange starting on the first drive. Josh Jackson was good with 296 yards on 21/38 passing with 3 TDs and 1 pick. It was the ground game that did them in. Javon Leake had 107 yards on 7 carries. Jake Funk had 94 yards on 5 carries. Anthony McFarland had 75 yards on 14 carries. I’m not done yet. Tayon Fleet-Davis added 67 yards on just 11 carries. This team may have been looking forward to Clemson next week, but they got straight up beat.

This Week: Lose 63-20 at Maryland
Next Week: Saturday at 7:30 pm vs. Clemson

https://chopchat.com/2019/09/09/acc-football-2019-best-worst-week-2/ (chopchat.com; Parker)

The second week of the 2019 ACC football season is in the books and we break down what went right and what went wrong for the conference.

If you are a fan of a school that is a member of the ACC football conference, you have probably been annoyed all through the summer about the constant comparisons to the conference being like the movie Snow White: essentially saying that it’s Clemson and a bunch of smaller teams just trying to compete.

Well, if we are going to go by what took place during week two of the 2019 college football season, it would almost be offensive to the long time Disney cinema classic to compare them to a God awful football conference that played as such this past weekend.

From the state of New York to the panhandle of Florida, the ACC football world didn’t have a whole lot to brag about this weekend and at this point needs a turn around real quick before embarrassment could strike in just one week.

Here’s a look at both the best and worst to take place this weekend involving the Power Five league and what took look forward to the most during the next weekend of the college football season.

Best of the best:

Clemson cements its place as the dominant ACC football team with blowout win over Texas A&M

Forget the final score since the Aggies added a touchdown with just seconds to go as the Tigers looked like a team that is going to run through all competition – including our beloved FSU football team – en route to another trip to the College Football Playoff. I mean, from start to finish this was all Clemson.

North Carolina and their freshman quarterback come back yet again to defeat Miami

This was also to be used as a shot at the Canes, but more at the fact that Sam Howell looks through two games to be someone that is going to be a decent quarterback at the college football level. This time, it was a drive with less than two minutes left to get the upset win and keep the Tar Heels unbeaten.

Wake Forest and Boston College look pretty damn good in wins to stay unbeaten

Yes, they were in wins against Rice and FCS member Richmond – but both teams didn’t look past their big opening week wins and at this point look like the only teams that might give Clemson a game in the Atlantic Division.

Worst of the worst:

Syracuse made ACC football look bad in blowout loss to Maryland

Heading into last weekend, the Orange were the only team other than Clemson that was ranked in the conference. Heading into this upcoming weekend, I would be shocked if the Tigers even had a slight fear of facing them on the road after the men from western New York allowed 63 points to the Terrapins in a game that wasn’t that close.

FSU football needed a missed extra point to beat a Sun Belt Conference team

There have been plenty of embarrassing wins in the history of the Seminoles program – I’m pretty sure that a win in overtime against a team that hasn’t had a winning season since 2012 in which another double digit lead was blown in the fourth quarter is going to be at the top of the list in Tallahassee.

Did we mention that Miami lost for the second straight game after having a fourth quarter lead?

Yes, I know what’s going on with the Seminoles – but we were not predicted to win our division of the ACC football world like many experts had the Canes doing. Alas, it has to come to an end this weekend against Bethune Cookman…or does it?

https://watchstadium.com/news/brett...all-bowl-projections-after-week-2-09-09-2019/ (watchstadium.com; McMurphy)

My College Football Playoff projections haven’t changed – and won’t, as long as Clemson, Georgia, Alabama and Utah keep winning – but my New Year’s 6 bowl projections have a new look.

Michigan, my preseason pick to get to the Rose Bowl, has been replaced by Ohio State in the Rose Bowl after the Wolverines’ escape against Army. Michigan also dropped completely out of my New Year’s 6 bowl projections with Penn State now projected to land an at-large bid to the Orange Bowl. It came down to Penn State and Wisconsin for the Orange Bowl with the Nittany Lions – for now – getting the slight edge.

With Washington’s upset loss to Cal, Washington State is my new Pac-12 choice to go the Rose Bowl.

Memphis remains my choice to finish as the highest ranked Group of 5 conference champion, by the narrowest of margins over Boise State.

This week’s bowl projections:

JHowell's Projections - 9/10/19

2019 Week #3 Computer Predictions:

Computer models tend to be notoriously inaccurate the first 2 or 3 weeks of the season. That's because typically they need a minimum of that many weeks of data before they can even begin to accurately evaluate how good teams really are relative to each other (how human pollsters think they can rank teams before the season even begins is a mystery to me...)

Below are the projections [from JHowell.net] for the NCAA IA football games through 9-14-2019:

Games against non-IA teams are excluded. The favorite is listed first with the projected margin of victory (i.e., the line) in parenthesis. 'TP' represents the total number of points expected to be scored in the game and 'Odds' represents the odds of the favorite winning straight-up (not against-the-spread).

Friday, September 13, 2019
#28-Boston College (-21.5) vs. #121-Kansas (TP=50 Odds=.824)
#33-Wake Forest (-9.5) vs. #64-North Carolina (TP=59 Odds=.630)

Saturday, September 14, 2019
#1-Clemson (-30) @ #46-Syracuse (TP=57 Odds=.880)
#6-Notre Dame (-29) vs. #109-New Mexico (TP=52 Odds=.893)
#9-Penn State (-16.5) vs. #51-Pittsburgh (TP=53 Odds=.744)
#21-N C State (-5.5) @ #57-West Virginia (TP=55 Odds=.586)
#39-Virginia (-5) vs. #47-Florida State (TP=55 Odds=.578)
#52-Duke (-0.5) @ #79-Middle Tennessee State (TP=55 Odds=.511)
#74-Louisville (-8.5) vs. #105-Western Kentucky (TP=54 Odds=.629) @ Nashville, TN

http://www.jhowell.net/cf/cfpred.txt as of 9/9/2019
Georgia Tech hosts The Citadel, Bethune-Cookman visits Miami, and Virginia Tech entertains Furman in three FCS-at-ACC games which are not projected by JHowell's computer because, well, FCS - it's just assumed that the ACC team will win. Need I say more?

Some of these computer predictions are "no-brainers":

  • Boston College is favored to roll over Kansas at home
  • Clemson is projected to whip Syracuse in the [fill in the blank] dome.

2019 NFL Players by Conference/Team

Now that the NFL season has begun, we know who made the cut and we can compute how many players from each college team made an NFL roster.

From NCAA.com: Colleges most represented on 2019 NFL rosters

The ACC is about where you would expect it to be as a conference - third place. Yes, the league has turned out some second place finishes in terms of the NFL draft, but career longevity is also a factor in this analysis. Still, the ACC is not that far behind the Big Ten, though it has a way to go to catch the SEC.

By the way, if you focus on the most important position...

Ryan.
Wilson.
Winston.

Watson.

It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that Miami (4th), Florida State (T-5th), Clemson (11th) and Notre Dame (T-14th) are all near the top. Likewise, no one should be shocked to see Duke, Wake Forest and, given their struggles until last season, Syracuse near the bottom.

Most In-State Opponents, 2019

ACC14logos.JPG
When I saw that Louisville was playing E. Kentucky and W. Kentucky in back-to-back weeks, then finishing the season with U. of Kentucky, it got me wondering... who plays the most in-state teams this season?

Of course I expected the North Carolina schools to score high on this list, but I also found a couple of surprises along the way...

(note: this isn't quite the same as asking how many in-state games a team plays, since some teams like the Florida Gators and the Texas Longhorns have an in-state neutral site game every year in addition to their home and away games).

#teamsTeamIn-state opponents

So Louisville matches Duke this year with 3 in-state opponents, but that's only good for a 6th-place tie among ACC teams. There are actually five teams which play 4 in-state foes: the other 3 NC teams, UVa and Miami.

Three teams play a pair of in-state foes, two teams play just one, and two lonely programs - Boston College and Syracuse - don't play a single in-state team all season.

We hate you, Comcast!

From AllSportsDiscussion: Advice to @JennK on the @Comcast Social Media Strategy Regarding an @Xfinity @ACCNetwork Carriage Agreement by Hokie Smash:

Comcast, by far, is the largest cable provider in the Commonwealth of Virginia – and it’s not close. The second largest provider in Virginia, Cox Communications, recently signed an ACC Network carriage agreement. This might be the domino that gets Comcast to fall – but I’m not holding my breath and here’s why (for now, they can afford to treat their customers like trash – yes, I’m being hard on Comcast – read this entire article)...
If it sounds personal to Hokie Smash, it is - he's a Comcast customer in Virginia himself (he plans to "cut the cord" this week). Hokie Smash is taking the lead in a campaign to get the attention of the top brass at Comcast - if you want in, check out his articles!

As you watch Florida State struggle against ULM and UNC go 2-0 against South Carolina and Miami, you ought to know that there IS a common denominator: freshman quarterback Sam Howell.

From Tallahassee.com, last December: Sam Howell announcement: Florida State 4-star QB commit flips to UNC

North Carolina has flipped Monroe (N.C.) Sun Valley four-star quarterback Sam Howell from Florida State.

https://www.syracuse.com/business/2...y-big-dollars-for-liverpool-country-club.html (PS; Moriarty)

A document filed by Trammell Crow Co. reveals how much the developer of a proposed 1,000-job distribution center in Clay has agreed to pay for the Liverpool Public Golf and Country Club.
In an application for tax exemptions for the 3.7-million-square-foot project, the company lists $6 million as its cost to acquire the 111-acre golf course at 7211 Morgan Road, a half-mile north of the village of Liverpool.

That’s four and a half times the $1.3 million tax assessment the town of Clay has placed on the property.

Dallas-based Trammell Crow has proposed building a five-story distribution center for a yet-to-be-named e-commerce company or retailer on the property. The facility would employ 1,000 people. Logistic experts say the end user is likely e-commerce giant Amazon.

The golf course is owned by brothers Richard and Ronald Ajemian, both of Baldwinsville, and their sister, Roberta Schmidt, of Liverpool.

Ronald Ajemian, who will turn 78 in two weeks, said their father bought the golf course in 1947. He said the business has been only moderately profitable for many years, not enough to interest a third generation of his family to operate it.
“It’s not an easy business,” he said. “It’s tough. It’s a lot of work. And we’re seasonal.”
Ajemian said the property has not been formally up for sale but that his family has entertained offers from developers over the years. None of the offers turned into anything, though.
A developer expressed interest in acquiring the golf course a few years ago and building condominiums on it but backed away over concerns about noise from a nearby restaurant and bar on Route 57, he said.

Brett McMurphy's College Football Bowl Projections After Week 2 - Stadium (watchstadium.com; McMurphy)

Championship – Jan. 13 (CFP semifinal winners)
Projection: Clemson vs. Georgia

Peach Bowl – Dec. 28 (CFP semifinal)
