Welcome to National Pumpkin Cheesecake Day!

Each year on October 21st, National Pumpkin Cheesecake Day ushers in the flavors of fall. Cheesecake is one of America’s favorite desserts and by adding pumpkin, we celebrate the essential flavoring of the season.

This sweet dessert mixes fresh soft cheese, cream cheese or cottage cheese, eggs, and sugar to create a base. The crust is made from crushed graham crackers, crushed cookies, pastry or sponge cake. Pumpkin may be added to cheesecake recipes in various ways. For example, it may be swirled throughout, mixed thoroughly with all ingredients or layered. Bakers prepare cheesecakes both baked or unbaked. Some bakers flavor cheesecakes and top them with fruit, fruit sauce, chocolate or whipped cream.
An ancient form of cheesecake may have been a popular dish in ancient Greece. The earliest attested mention of cheesecake is by the Greek physician, Aegimus. He wrote a book on the art of making cheesecakes.

James Kraft developed a form of pasteurized cream cheese in 1912. In 1928, Kraft acquired the Philadelphia trademark and marketed pasteurized Philadelphia Cream Cheese. In fact, bakers us Philadelphia cream cheese more than any other to make cheesecake than any other.

What tough lessons can Syracuse football learn from this season? - The Juice Online (the juice; Stechschulte)

It has been a pretty nightmarish season for Syracuse. The Orange stand at 3-4 overall and are winless not just in conference play, but against Power 5 competition.

The offensive line resembles a sieve at times, leading to Tommy DeVito getting banged around and eventually lifted in Friday night’s game against Pitt while simultaneously making a conventional running game nearly a memory.

Their defensive mates simply cannot hold up against all the weight put on their shoulders. While the unit has performed admirably in the last two weeks, they simply cannot be held responsible to do almost everything needed for the team to win.

With only five games left, the season looks lost and as the leaves continue to fall, the SU coaching staff will have to plot out a new plan. But, what tough lessons can be taken from this exceptionally tough season as it winds down?

There is no help on the way for the offensive line.

It is apparent that, while Dino Babers said after the loss to the Panthers that no one’s job is safe, the coaching staff believes that the quintet they have been employing after Sam Heckel’s injury in the season opener is the best grouping they have. After all, college players cannot be fired, but their coaches do not enjoy the same luxury.

If the season maintains its current direction, the future may end up being on display after SU has its second bye week. The Orange have no game the second week of November and three games after that. Syracuse could use that off week and the recently-changed redshirt rule that allows players to take a redshirt year and still play in four games as an opportunity to see what some of the young guys can do.

What percentage chance does Syracuse football have of making a bowl? (podcast) (PS; podcast; Whigham & Bailey)

Syracuse football lost to Pittsburgh 27-20 on Friday night, sliding to 3-4 overall, 0-3 in Atlantic Coast Conference play and 0-4 against Power-Five opponents this season.

Julian Whigham and I sat down to analyze the contest, including the overturned fumble call that would have given the Orange a chance to tie the game in its waning moments. We also discuss the state of SU’s offense, with a front five in shambles and a quarterback situation that now includes Clayton Welch.

Then we answer the question on the minds of most fans as SU segues toward a road matchup with Florida State next Saturday: what are the chances that this team -- once predicted by many, including myself, to go to the Orange Bowl -- will even qualify for postseason play?
Stick around for fan questions, including one from SU head coach Dino Babers himself (probably).

Schafer: Syracuse can turn season around, make bowl game (DO; Schafer)

A bag of Chick-Fil-A in front of him and another forgettable Syracuse football performance behind him, Evan Adams talked about inches.

“We’ve been close, but we need to clean up stuff,” Adams said after the 27-20 loss to Pittsburgh. “Me myself, I had a false start today. That’s inches that we could’ve used. You think about the game like that, everybody has the inches that need to contribute.”

Sure, it’s a cliché often used in football speak, but perhaps there’s a legitimate point to it all. Think about it. A false start here. A sack allowed there. Maybe a Kenneth Ruff fumble recovery isn’t overruled without clear evidence. At some point, the inches add up. At some point, enough small things overcome the mishaps and Syracuse completes the comeback against Pittsburgh instead of another one score loss.

Each misstep has been a small piece to Syracuse’s puzzling 3-4 start after finishing 10-3 a year ago. It’s easy to see how SU (3-4, 0-3 Atlantic Coast) doesn’t finish with at least three wins in its final five matchups of 2019. The Orange haven’t put together a successful offensive performance against a Power 5 school yet this season and it might not matter. The offense doesn’t need to be great for the Orange to make a bowl game. It just needs to be serviceable.

Graham: Offensive issues are too deep for Syracuse to make a bowl game (DO; Graham)

Sitting in front of the media, the concrete underbelly of the Carrier Dome bleachers slanted overhead, Dino Babers laid it on the table for Syracuse football.

“Those young men are hurting,” Babers said of his team. “And so are the coaches.”

The Orange had just suffered another demoralizing near-miss — this time to Pittsburgh, 27-20 — in which SU gave up the most sacks in a single game since Nov. 24, 2007, its running game again struggled to do anything and another solid defensive performance was wasted.

“We need to regroup and we need to go back and we really need to check ourselves,” Babers continued. “And we will do that. As a family. And then we will come out and we will try to do a lot better than what we’ve been doing.”

But trying harder won’t be enough for a Syracuse (3-4, 0-3 Atlantic Coast) team off to its worst conference start in 10 years. The issues — namely a nonexistent run game, an inability to protect the quarterback and inconvenient injuries — run deeper than week-to-week game-planning and scheme. SU doesn’t have the personnel to fix its pass protection issues, and whatever subsequent run game it tries to establish will be stymied. As for injuries, that comes down to good luck, and that’s been hard to come by for the Orange.

Pitt Panthers earns win in Syracuse, has argument to be in Top 25 (pittsburghsportscastle.com; York)

The Pittsburgh Panthers football team and head coach Pat Narduzzi took a road trip Friday night to take on the Syracuse Orange. These two historic universities have been meeting every year since 1955 during the Big East Conference days. Now, they continue their unspoken rivalry in the ACC.

Pitt coming off a bye week after a win over Duke in Durham. Meanwhile, Syracuse is coming off a loss at NC State.

The first quarter went by fast with not much action offensively. The Panthers got three points from Alex Kessman’s 47-yard field goal and a muffed punt fumble by Maurice Ffrench. The Orange was able to turn the turnover into three points and tie the game.

Shortly after that the Panthers found their groove, the connection that worked for the “Pitt Special.” It was a lateral pass from quarterback Kenny Pickett, throwing to wide receiver Aaron Matthews for a 43-yard touchdown pass, capping a great drive. With that, the Panthers went up 10-3 with 1:23 remaining in the first quarter.

Syracuse was stopped once again and had to settle for another three points, making it 10-6 in favor of the Panthers. The Orange had a great defensive first half, holding the Panthers to just six points. Meanwhile, the Panthers witness great play from senior cornerback Damar Hamlin all over the field.

Pittsburgh pounds Syracuse 27-20 at the Dome | The NewsHouse (thenewshouse.com; Bannon)

Boos rained down on Tommy DeVito and the Syracuse offense as they took a knee to run the last few seconds off the clock, taking the Orange into the locker room for halftime.

It looked like Syracuse’s showing against Pitt was going to be exactly what could have been expected. Matched against the country’s 19th-best yard/game defense, Syracuse was bound to struggle to move the ball. An offensive line that has been unable to give its quarterback a stable pocket all season didn’t help the cause. Syracuse never established a ground game, averaging 1.5 yards per carry for a mere 51 rushing yards. But Syracuse managed to hang around, through a combination of a similarly struggling Pittsburgh offense and quality play by the Orange defense.

After trading punts and field goals to start the game, it seemed Pitt, too, was going to struggle to score. Then, with 1:23 remaining in the first quarter, the Panthers reached deep into their toolbox and found a trick play that, after a few laterals in the backfield, allowed wide receiver Aaron Mathews a wide-open 43-yard touchdown reception.

"WE GOT PLAYMAKERS OUT THERE ... I THREW IT UP AND WE SAW THEM MAKE A PLAY."
QB CLAYTON WELCH

After the slow offensive start for both teams, Pitt was ready to pull away in the second quarter. Syracuse turned to backup quarterback Clayton Welch to rest DeVito for a few plays, but the senior’s three rushes for 41 yards failed to generate a touchdown. A pair of Pitt touchdowns put the Panthers up by 18, a seemingly insurmountable total for an Orange offense that couldn’t piece together drives or keep their quarterback upright. Time and time again, the offensive line closed around DeVito. The quarterback tried scrambling out of the pocket, tried juking lineman and tried getting the ball off quickly, but none of it worked. Six times DeVito found himself on the ground under a Panther defender, sacked.

Pitt defeats Syracuse in error-filled garbage, er game (cardiachill.com; Whaley)

The final record will show that Pitt defeated the Syracuse Orange, 27-20. The team moves to 5-2, Syracuse dropped a game they really needed, and the end result was a good one. Most importantly, Pitt remains right there in the Division hunt. But for even casual observers, the game was a virtual train wreck from start to finish.
There are lots of folks to blame for that. And if you’re starting anywhere other than the officiating, you’re looking in the wrong place.

The officials, as I say on the rare occasions I have to interject them into these ridiculously long post-game comments, are not a regular target of this blog. Officials, as you would expect, miss calls. Sometimes even important ones. But you live with that because they are human and trying to fairly and evenly officiate a game moving a million miles an hour with 22 players on the field that are, generally, at least half their age. Still, you would be hard-pressed to find such a display of incompetence as was on display tonight.

The officiating was baffling almost the entire way through the game. Some calls, however, were so egregious that they merit special attention.

On one such play, the officials threw a flag for what appeared to be taunting on Syracuse. They then explained that the Orange player in question was not taunting the Pitt sidelines. Rather, he was informing them they had a player injured.

Fair enough. Innocent mistake and, if that was the only problem the crew experienced, it would not even be noteworthy, save for the clumsy explanation. Unfortunately for the crew, it was not.
The officials bumbled their way through a comedy of errors. Stupid penalties for questionable plays. Once, a Syracuse player was called for a personal foul for a mostly harmless shove that resulted in nothing. But I want to call out a few of the really bad ones.

On one play, they gave Syracuse a fairly generous spot, choosing not to review the spot. Worse, on a second, Pitt appeared to have a first down but the officials chose not to review the spot, hilariously marking the Panthers short bringing up a 4th down. Pitt, in trying to determine their course of action was forced to call a timeout. The officials then decided, what the heck, review the spot. They then determined their initial spot was unfair and gave Pitt the first down, but still taking their timeout.

What?

Now, for the record, they are not technically obligated to do that. Nevertheless, the Panthers were clearly forced to burn a timeout due to the incompetence of the officials. And I’ve seen officials return those timeouts in such instances before. If the Panthers were not screaming, demanding their timeout back, they sure as you know what should have been.

5 worst conference realignment moves in modern college football history (saturdayblitz.com; Bigalke)

When they were a charter member of the Big East, Syracuse had a consistent run during the 1990s and early 2000s that put them consistently in the AP Top 25 and among the top programs in the country. The Orange were ranked at the end of seven of their first 10 years as a member of the Big East.

Then the wins stopped coming. Realignment within the Big East dramatically altered the composition of the league, as teams like Miami and Virginia Tech departed for ACC membership and left their charter members in the lurch.

For Syracuse, the departure of the Hurricanes and Hokies did not make things easier in league play. Teams like Cincinnati and Louisville came in and immediately started putting up better numbers, and the Orange actually watched their conference win percentage plummet. The second decade of Big East membership yielded not a single finish in the postseason AP Top 25, nor a berth in one of the BCS games.
With the Big East crumbling, the Syracuse administration jumped at the opportunity to join the ACC when it came up in 2013. While the Orange were a .503 team in conference as a member of the Big East, that number plummeted to .354 in conference play since the move. A top-15 finish in 2018 is already beginning to look like a mirage as the Orange regress right back to the mean in 2019.

Syracuse Football: Dino Babers brushing off trick play ended up costing him (itlh; Esden Jr)

Syracuse football head coach Dino Babers casually brushed off the trick play vs NC State and it ended up costing him vs Pitt. Here are the details.

For the first time in 2019, Syracuse football was duped by a trick play vs NC State.

On 1st and 10 from the Syracuse 28-yard line with 1:23 left in the first half, the left-handed Bailey Hockman threw a pass behind the line of scrimmage to wide receiver Thayer Thomas who then threw a double-pass to a wide-open Trent Pennix who walked in untouched into the endzone.

That would put the Wolfpack up 13-0, NC State ended up winning the game 16-10.
After the game, Syracuse football head coach Dino Babers was asked about the trick play and seemingly shrugged it off:

“They got the touchdown on the trick play it was a good call by them obviously. If we would’ve been in zone, it wouldn’t have been a big play, we were in man so they caught us. It happens, it’s not a big deal, people play man and zone they don’t know when it’s going to happen. So they got… it was a good call by them.”

It sure sounded like at the end of that bite Dino wanted to say they got lucky, but he stopped himself.
You know when someone is talking and they’re about to say something and you can jump in and finish their sentence, this seemed like one of those moments.

Virginia Tech Hokies Post Game Wrap-up and Observations (gobblercountry.com; Fahvaag)

for Hokie Mark

Six Overtimes or Five with 2 Possessions?

Wow was this a hot topic or what? The NCAA changed the rules this season for overtime games. It was explained briefly in an Sports Illustrated Article. The upshot is that there are no more classic Collegiate Overtime periods after the 4th. The Fifth Overtime Period is a single period that is played as alternating possessions from the opposition’s 3 yard line. Two-Point conversions are attempted by each team until one team scores 2 and one team doesn’t. There are no first downs, no field goals, no four plays, no timeouts. There is one try each. So, the terminology is going to have to keep up with the reality of the new process. I don’t even think people believed that anyone would get to that point any time soon. So, IF the language actually catches up to the reality, the record should be set that Virginia Tech defeated the Tar Heels 43-41 in 5 Overtime Periods after 2 possessions in the 5th Overtime. (5OT2P?)

Of course most of everyone thinks its so much cooler to say 6OTs. That perplexes me because it really says that you failed to win six prior times. Sort of bragging about a sub-optimal outcome made worse the farther it goes.

Well, whatever it’s called, eventually, the Hokies won.

The Press Box is Not the Sidelines

Usually I am toting the camera, dressed for the weather, and trotting up and down the West side of the field with a camera in my hand, lining up for the best possible shots for what I think is going to happen. It’s fun, exhausting, and sometimes exasperating. I have had more great shots ruined by the chain gang, or a Side judge, or the ball suppliers.. or the kid with the parabolic dish... (those are the worst). The point is that it’s exciting, and flat out fun. Now, the downside is that you don’t get to see the game until after you get home and grab it off the DVR or web; but being a photographer for a publication covering your favorite college football team is a bucket list item. The Press Box is special, but it’s stuffy. It’s brutally quiet, half the writers have headphones on. It’s also no place to be a rabid Hokie Fan. There is no “cheering” or even loud talking allowed. And there is no Hokie gear tolerated, even the mildest expression of “Hokie Nation Status”. Bryan is great in the booth. He can have it next game. I’m going back out on the field for the last two home games.

Clemson player rides bus home instead of plane after ejection for throwing punch against Louisville (usatoday.com; Bumbaca)

for gbo

Andrew Booth Jr. had plenty of time to ponder his mistakes this weekend.

The Clemson Tigers cornerback rode the managers' bus home from Louisville, Kentucky, instead of finding his seat on the team plane, head coach Dabo Swinney said, because he was ejected for punching a Cardinals player in the helmet Saturday.

"He rode back on our manager bus, that's where it started," Swinney told reporters, per ESPN. "The rest of it will be handled in-house."

The journey from Louisville to Clemson, South Carolina, is about 438 miles.
Booth Jr. became tangled with Louisville's Trenell Troutman on a punt play in the third quarter. When Booth Jr. stood over Troutman on the ground, he delivered a punch that connected with Troutman's helmet.

Swinney was upset with Booth Jr. in the moment and sent him off the field before the official formally announced the ejection. Swinney said the freshman and Georgia native apologized to Louisville coach Scott Satterfield and that Booth Jr. took accountability to his teammates, coaches and athletic director Dan Radakovich.

"He is disappointed in himself, embarrassed," Swinney said. "He has apologized to our team and our AD. He's been extremely remorseful. What happened is way out of character for who he is. Very pleased with how he has taken ownership. He had a long bus ride home last night and plenty of time to think about it.

Doughty: After losing its last two on the road, UVa football looks for better luck at Louisville (roanoke.com; Doughty)

All it took was a look at Virginia’s upcoming football schedule to see that the Cavaliers were at a crossroads with Duke coming to town Saturday.

The Blue Devils’ visit to Scott Stadium followed road games at Notre Dame and Miami and preceded road games with Louisville and North Carolina.

Because of what happened in the previous two contests, Virginia needed to beat Duke or the possibility of a five-game losing streak remained on the table.

Most UVa fears were alleviated when the Blue Devils managed one first down in the first quarter and went on to lose 48-14.

The Cavs have owned the Blue Devils in recent years but UVa wasn’t a big favorite based on oddmakers, who installed Duke as a 3 ½-point underdog.

It’s hard to see what the ACC schedule makers had in mind when they gave Virginia a three-game homestand in September and a three-game November homestand against Georgia Tech, Liberty and Virginia Tech.

Ed Hardin: Wake Forest fans, team take conservative approach in season that could end in Orange Bowl (journalnow.com; Hardin)

After a soggy win over Florida State that finally stopped the Wake Forest fans from booing, a lot of people are still wondering just how good the Deacons really are.

And after a day of watching the Big Four collapse in a succession of puzzling losses, a lot of people are beginning to wonder just how good the ACC really is.

But now 6-1 (2-1 ACC), which is Wake’s best start since 2016, the Deacs will have a week off to consider why they struggled to beat Florida State and why in the world Coach Dave Clawson's teams are 0-7 in games played after open weeks.

When N.C. State comes to Winston-Salem in two weeks, it will be interesting to see the reception. Not a lot of people, a crowd of 24,782, came to watch Saturday night. And when rain came at halftime, most everyone else began to pack for home.
They missed a pretty good finish, a fitting field goal by Wake near the end of a field-goal game, and a botched comeback attempt by FSU in the middle of a botched FSU season.

Around the ACC: Week 8 (fromtherumbleseat.com; Tankersley)

NC State - 24 | Boston College - 45
Boston College won this game in the most Boston College way possible. They ran the ball for 429 yards and played good defense. AJ Dillon was the main rusher for the Eagles, getting 34 carries for 223 yards and three touchdowns. David Bailey had a season-best game, going for 181 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries.
NC State is on bye this week. Boston College plays again Saturday at Clemson.

Georgia Tech - 28 | Miami - 21
Man, there’s not many things in the sports world that I enjoy more than watching Georgia Tech beat Miami. Also, Miami apparently has a worse field goal situation than Tech does, as they missed three field goals from less than 35 yards out. #goacc
Georgia Tech is on bye this week. Miami plays again Saturday at Pittsburgh.

Clemson - 45 | Louisville - 10
Clemson scored a lot of points, and Travis Etienne ran for 192 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries as the Tigers proved again why they’re the best team in the ACC. Business as usual here.
Clemson plays again Saturday against Boston College. Louisville plays again Saturday against Virginia.

North Carolina - 41 | Virginia Tech - 43
SIX OVERTIMES. The NCAA introduced a new rule this season for overtimes, so after the fourth overtime, the teams have a two-point conversion contest until one team wins. This was the first game to ever feature this, and it was definitely something. This game had a lot of yards and a lot of points, and probably knocked North Carolina out of the Coastal race, but it’s important to note that it is still possible for the ultimate Coastal Chaos, where every team goes 4-4 in conference, so I’m happy.

ACC Coastal Update - 10/21/19 (RX; HM)

ACC Coastal Update - 10/21/19

When Georgia Tech upset Miami and Virginia Tech upset UNC on Saturday, it changed a good many things. For one, it gave Yellow Jacket fans hope, while lighting a fire under the Hurricanes (they hope). It took UNC out of the driver's seat and put the Hokies there instead. But it did something else... it completed the circle in the ACC Coastal Division:

Ah, the dreaded circle... parity or mediocrity? Everyone has an opinion, but even the most optimistic fan has to admit - it's not a good look.

So what are the odds of winning the division now? According to ESPN's FPI (as shown on TV - on the ACC Network):

1. Virginia - 65%
2. UNC - 16%
3. Pitt - 13%
4. Virginia Tech - 4%
5. Duke - 1%
6. Miami - less than 1%
7. Georgia Tech = less than 1%
GT was already out of contention, while losses in week 8 sent Miami and Duke to the loser's couch to join them. Virginia has the highest probability by far, but even though UNC and Pitt have higher statistical probabilities than VT, those teams do not control their own destinies - the Hokies do (but they must win out in conference play - a tall order, to be sure).

Pitt 27, Syracuse 20

Pittsburgh vs. Syracuse
Football Highlights (2019)

Pittsburgh vs. Syracuse: Pitt went up to Syracuse and came away with a 27-20 victory. The Panthers defense had the Orange quarterbacks under constant pressure and recorded 9 sacks. Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett was 18-33 for 232 yards and two touchdowns. Maurice Ffrench had 6 receptions for 92 yards and a touchdown. For Syracuse, Taj Harris had three catches for 111 yards, including a 94-yard touchdown reception.
__________
MY COMMENTS:
Both defenses got a lot of pressure on the opposing quarterbacks, but Pitt was able to generate more points thanks to a somewhat more effective rushing attack. This could be another step towards a very good season for the Panthers; for the Orange, it's crunch time - Syracuse needs to win 3 of the next 5 games just to become bowl-eligible.
