Welcome to National Boston Cream Pie Day!

Boston cream pie made its debut in 1856, being whipped up at the restaurant inside of Boston's Parker House Hotel, by Sanzian, a French chef who was hired to create the restaurant's menu by the hotel's founder, Harvey Parker. The hotel had opened the previous year, and according to the Encyclopedia of American Food and Drink, the pie was first referenced in print that year as well, in the New York Herald. Although the original building of the hotel no longer exists, the hotel was rebuilt in the same place and is now known as the Omni Parker House. Today we celebrate and enjoy the dessert, which has been a staple in Boston and around the world since the nineteenth century.

Boston cream pie is not actually a pie, but a cake, although it is served in wedges as if it were a pie. It is made of two round layers of sponge cake or white cake, a thick vanilla custard filling, and a chocolate glaze or icing. It is sometimes instead topped with powdered sugar. When it was first created, chocolate icing was unique—mainly being used in pudding or in drinks at the time—and the dessert was known as "Chocolate Cream Pie," in a nod to its icing. Today it is sometimes known as "Parker House Chocolate Pie" when it is iced.

How a love of Dino Babers has expanded ‘Spartacuse’s’ tailgate (DO; Hillman)

Nestled behind Marshall Square Mall on every Syracuse game day is a white tent draped over a variety of SU gear, expected from a normal tailgate. There’s a cooler stamped with a sticker from the 1994 season, two Orange lawn chairs and a couple of SU-themed blankets hanging down from the roof.

Watching over everything is a poster of head coach Dino Babers’ smirking face. An unavoidable, 4-year-old banner is an homage to the head coach for injecting life into the SU fanbase.

“That’s the Dino Babers lounge,” said Kurt Pomerenke, a realtor living in Oswego. “It’s the focal point of the whole tailgate. We always make sure it’s here.”

The lounge inspired a multi-pronged tailgate with upward of 50 people coming every week, including former SU softball stars Alicia Hansen and Faith Cain. Pomerenke, otherwise known as “Spartacuse,” arrives between five and seven hours before kickoff every week to craft the best game day experience possible.

Syracuse Football: Orange are among most disappointing teams in 2019 (itlh; Arrigo)

Syracuse football has had a disappointing 2019 campaign. Here’s where they rank among the most unsatisfying teams in college football.

Let’s face it, the Syracuse football team has been pretty bad this Fall, and nobody saw it coming.

We are just over halfway through the college football regular season. Syracuse has fallen to the bottom of the ACC, and after a preseason of shooting for the stars, the Orange are going to be scrapping just to make the lowest of bowl games.

So who are the most disappointing teams in college football?

No. 5 – Texas A&M

I’ll be honest; it is kind of unfair that Texas A&M is on this list. The Aggies make the cut because of their high ranking in the preseason. They were ranked No. 12 to start the season and had a chance to really skyrocket with the Week 2 matchup against Clemson. However, the Aggies were handled easily, along with losses to Alabama and Auburn. The Aggies now sit at 4-3, but all of their losses have been against excellent teams and it’s only Jimbo Fisher’s second season. It just would have been nice to see them beat one of those three top teams.

No. 4- Michigan State

Although the Big 10 was Michigan’s and Ohio State’s to lose coming into the year, Michigan State was supposed to make some noise this season. The Spartans started the season ranked No. 18 and even though they weren’t picked to win the Big 10 by many, they should be in a better spot than where they are placed today. The Spartans are 4-3 after losing again to Arizona State for the second straight year and getting blown out by Ohio State and Wisconsin. Now, they aren’t getting any votes in the AP Poll and Mark D’Antonio may be on the hot seat.

No. 3. – Syracuse

The Orange rightfully deserves to be in the top 5. Syracuse was supposed to be the one team that gave Clemson a run for their money in the ACC Atlantic, and maybe even beat the Tigers when they came to visit back in September. Instead, the Orange can’t even beat a Power 5 team. The Orange are nowhere close to receiving votes in the AP Poll and after expectations of making a great bowl game like the Orange Bowl, Syracuse is fighting to play in a bowl game that nobody will be interested in.

Syracuse Football players to fans during frustrating skid: "Stick with us" (cnycentral.com; Hauswirth)

The Syracuse University football program is going through growing pains in Dino Babers' fourth year on the job.

The hype surrounding this year's Orange team is quickly disintegrated after beginning the year inside the AP Top 25.

Now, Syracuse is staring at a 3-4 overall record while beginning 0-3 in ACC play.
Another tough game awaits this weekend when the Orange visit a talented, yet struggling Florida State team.

The Seminoles share the same overall record as the Orange, while picking up a pair of ACC wins already.

Regardless of Florida State's difficulties, Syracuse has its own problems to worry about, and the fan base has already taken notice.

Orange fans have voiced their frustrations during games and even on social media, but now, the players have responded with a simple answer.

"Just stick with us," Orange senior tailback Moe Neal said during Tuesday's interviews with the local media. "We've still got a good bit of games left. We've got to believe in each other. If the fans don't believe, then we've got to believe in this family."

Syracuse football still without a conference win (uticaod.com; AP; Kekis)

Syracuse is the lone team in the Atlantic Coast Conference without a league win, yet coach Dino Babers continues to operate on an even keel.

“I don’t think there’s a game in the ACC we’ve been out of, and I’m proud of that part,” Babers said Monday. “I don’t think the guys have quit. Being close — some people think that’s really cool, but we’re not in it to be close. Everybody here wants to get a win.”

Syracuse (3-4, 0-3 ACC) lost 41-6 to Clemson , 16-10 to North Carolina State and 27-20 to Pittsburgh on Friday night. Two of those losses were at home, where the Orange were undefeated a year ago.
Against the Tigers, who were ranked No. 1 in the country, any chance for an upset win before a sold-out Carrier Dome crowd was lost early in the third quarter with the Orange trailing 17-6. Quarterback Tommy DeVito was sacked for a 10-yard loss on a third-and-3 play from near midfield and Syracuse had to punt. After Chris Fredrick intercepted Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence on the ensuing possession and returned the ball to the Clemson 9, DeVito threw a pick on the next play, the Tigers responded with a quick score and that was it.

North Carolina State built a 16-0 lead in the third quarter, then survived a late Syracuse push, escaping when time ran out on the Orange. And Pitt rushed to a 24-6 halftime lead and withstood a late surge keyed by backup quarterback Clayton Welch, a redshirt senior who is a junior college transfer getting his first extended time under center after DeVito was injured.

One common thread punctuated those losses: sacks. Clemson and N.C. State each registered eight and Pitt had nine, the most for the Panthers since 2001. On the season, Syracuse has allowed 35 sacks, the top mark in the nation, behind its injury-plagued offensive line.

“The thing that we need to do is we need to grow, and we’re not growing fast enough for me,” Babers said. “You have to have more than one protection. Wide receivers are not doing the things they’re supposed to do. It’s all spread out.”

Babers hinted at possible lineup changes when the Orange visit Florida State (3-4, 2-3) on Saturday.

Syracuse Football Knows Florida State is Better than Record Shows (bcssn.com)

Don't let the record fool you. At 3-4 overall and 2-3 in the ACC, Florida State has every bit as much talent as it did during the halcyon days when the Seminoles were winning ACC championships with regularity and competing for national titles.

Syracuse head coach Dino Babers knows he and the Orange (3-4, 0-3 ACC) have a difficult task when they head to Doak Campbell Stadium this weekend, a place Syracuse has not won in five previous tries.
"Florida State is a very, very explosive football team," Babers said Monday at his weekly press conference. "Cam Akers is one of the top running backs in the ACC. The guy literally breaks a lot of tackles by himself. It's really hard for one guy to bring him down.

"Their defense is extremely large, too. They have big people on the inside who are difficult to move. Their corners are very talented and their safeties are big hitters, so they are a defense full of four- and five-star guys who have either played a lot of football against us or guys who have played a lot and waited their turn to become a starter."

Last season, the Orange imposed their will on the Seminoles in a 30-7 victory. Syracuse registered four sacks while allowing just 62 yards rushing in the Dome. Syracuse outgained the Seminoles 441-240 and had 25 first downs to Florida State's 11. The triumph marked the Orange's first win in the series since 1966.

To duplicate that result, Babers said he needs to see more growth across his football team.
"We're just not growing fast enough for me," he said.

While the development in some areas has not been as quick as the head coach would like, there have been individual examples of strides being made in technique and performance. Babers noted a perfectly executed cut block by running back Abdul Adams Friday night against Pitt as an example.
In the bigger picture, players like senior linebacker Andrew Armstrong, who led the team with nine tackles against the Panthers, and redshirt junior defensive lineman Josh Black, who logged five stops and two sacks in the Pitt game, are playing some of their best football.

Football Outlook And Basketball Preview Feat. Matthew Gutierrez TradeMark Podcast: Syracuse Football podcast (player.fm; podcast; Marona & Gutierrez)

Today I have on Matthew Gutierrez of the Athletic. I wanted to shout out the basketball team because I have a sneaking suspicion they are going to be good. Like pretty darn good. Relatively of course to the conference. However, we mourn the Pitt loss and move on to productive football talk and a fun basketball preview. Enjoy the show!

Duke-UNC matchup headlines Week 9 in ACC (espn; AP)

Here are things to watch in the Atlantic Coast Conference in Week 9:
GAME OF THE WEEK
Duke at North Carolina. The ACC's highest-profile basketball rivalry takes center stage in football with significant ramifications in the cloudy Coastal Division. The Blue Devils (4-3, 2-2) and the Tar Heels (3-4, 2-2) are both in the mix behind division leaders Virginia and Pittsburgh with the loser seemingly playing itself out of the race. Duke has won three straight in the series, a run that coincided with current New York Giants QB Daniel Jones' time as the starter, and is looking for its first four-game winning streak against North Carolina since the 1950s.

BEST MATCHUP
Virginia defense vs. Louisville offense. The Cavaliers' defense has kept them in control of the Coastal Division race, ranking second in the conference in each of the four main stat categories and holding five of the seven opponents to 17 or fewer points. They'll face a test from a big-play Louisville offense under new coach Scott Satterfield. The Cardinals averaged 490.5 total yards through six games before they were held to 263 yards by No. 4 Clemson, and they lead the league with 23 plays of 30 or more yards and 15 that have gone for 40-plus yards. Virginia has allowed an ACC-fewest three 40-yard plays on the season.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
An argument could be made that the ACC is the most competitive of the power conferences. The average margin of victory in league games is 13.9 points -- the closest of any of the five major conferences -- and more than half of the 27 ACC games played so far have been decided by eight or fewer points. Eight of them have been decided by a field goal or less, the most of any major conference.

LONG SHOT
Perhaps Syracuse can find a way to keep it close as a 10+-point underdog against Florida State. It's been a disappointing year for the Orange (3-4, 0-3), who started the season in the national rankings but now find themselves as the only ACC team without a conference victory. The Seminoles are dealing with even more injuries -- WR Ontaria Wilson (shoulder) is the latest to go down -- heading into this matchup of desperate Atlantic Division teams. Florida State has played four one-score games, going 1/3 in them.

IMPACT PLAYER
North Carolina QB Sam Howell has been tough to stop during his freshman season with the Tar Heels. Howell matched a school record with five touchdown passes in last week's six-overtime loss to Virginia Tech, and has reached the 300-yard mark in three of his last four games. Next up is a Duke team that has held six straight opponents to fewer than 270 yards passing.

The ACC in SP+, Week 9: Miami is here to help you through the tough times (backingthepack.com; Muma)

If there were an award for routinely looking better on paper than your opponent and losing anyway, Miami would have that thing wrapped up. And minted, probably. The Hurricanes have been better on a per-play basis than their opponent in six of seven games this season, and all they have to show for that is a lousy 3-4 record.

And I would have figured losing to Georgia Tech at home was beyond the reach even of these Hurricanes. Whoops!

Overall, the Canes are averaging 6.2 yards per play while allowing only 4.7—that kind of differential normally leads to decidedly positive results. But this Miami team is intent on bucking all logic so that it can be here for you, the grieving ACC football fan, as you attempt to cheer yourself up after another rough week. Had a disappointment at Boston College, did you? Well here’s Miami losing at home to the league’s worst team. You’re welcome.

Does SoS Justify AP Dropping Clemson to 4th? (10/22/19) (RX; HM)

Does SoS Justify AP Dropping Clemson to 4th? (10/22/19)

BEWARE of poking the Tiger too much!

Clemson is the first AP preseason #1 this century to fall as low as 4th while still undefeated. According to SI.com:

The last preseason No. 1 to drop as far or farther without a loss or tie was Oklahoma in 1977... One has to go all the way back to 1971 to find a similar drop to Clemson’s for a preseason No. 1 [Notre Dame]...
Some have tried to argue that the drop in ranking is 'deserved' because the Tigers have not 'looked' good or that 'other unbeaten teams have been more impressive' than Clemson and against 'stiffer' competition.

I take exception with that. In particular, it's hard to argue that the teams in front of Clemson in the polls have played 'stiffer competition'. Let's take a look at the opponents of the top 4 teams (so far), along with the W-L records of those teams (P5 teams in bold):
