Welcome to Mischief Night!

Mischief Night is an evening filled with mischief and pranks done to neighbors, mainly carried out by children and teenagers. Steeped in folk tradition, the holiday usually takes place the night before Halloween. In practice, the holiday separates the trick from the treat of trick-or-treating, which is an activity often done on Halloween. Although, in some circumstances, Mischief Night is observed on Halloween night and is combined with trick-or-treating.

There are a wide variety of pranks that regularly accompany the night. Common examples include toilet papering houses and trees, soaping windows, paint throwing, egging and flouring houses and cars, throwing tomatoes, knocking on doors or ringing doorbells and not waiting for an answer, "forking" gardens, tying door handles together or putting treacle on them, setting off fireworks, and smashing pumpkins. Although the pranks are usually innocuous, the police have had to intervene at times because of the destruction of property, such as by the spray-painting of homes and buildings, and even by arson.

College football rankings: Slumping Syracuse has gone from top 25 to Bottom 25 in same season (cbssports.com; Fornelli)

At this time last year, Syracuse had just beaten No. 22 NC State in The Dome Formerly Known As Carrier to improve to 6-2 on the season. That win also moved the Orange into the AP Top 25 poll for the first time since 2001, as Syracuse found itself at No. 22. It would remain in the poll the rest of the season, climbing as high as No. 12 following a 54-23 win over Louisville two weeks later. Syracuse would finish the season 10-3 and at No. 15 in the AP poll.

This led to some hype leading to the 2019 season. With Clemson being the clear No. 1 in the ACC and no obvious choice to be No. 2, many pundits chose the team that went 10-3 last season to be that team despite a lot of important losses. Syracuse opened 2019 at No. 22 in the preseason AP Top 25 and moved up a spot to No. 21 after a narrow 24-0 win over Liberty in its season-opener. The next week Syracuse lost at Maryland 63-20 and fell out of the poll entirely.

It's kept losing since, and after dropping to 3-5 on the season with a 35-17 loss to Florida State, the Orange have accomplished quite a feat. They've gone from the AP Top 25 to The Bottom 25 in the same season.

Orange may be the new fast, but life comes at you faster.

Boston College Football: Welcome to Syracuse Week (SI; BM)

"We're on to Syracuse." exclaimed head coach Steve Addazio this afternoon in his weekly press conference. Boston College is back at home preparing for their second straight road game this time heading up north to face off with their rivals the Syracuse Orange. After being drubbed on Saturday night by Clemson, Boston College is going to move on and hopefully improve in all aspects of their play which only mustered seven points and allowed a whopping fifty nine to the Tigers.
On the other side of the field on Saturday, will be Dino Baber's Orange, a team that is has been a massive disappointment this season. Starting the preseason ranked, they have falled on hard times. With the graduation of quarterback Eric Dungey, comes prized recruit Tommy Devito who has not been able to keep up with the lightning fast paced offense that is part of the Syracuse identity. Syracuse's scoring has dropped almost 18 points from 40 last year to 23 a game this year. Much of this has to do with Syracuse's offensive line which has been positively dreadful all year, allowing 42 sacks by the most by any FBS school.

This is a huge game for both schools, as both need to win it if they want to get themselves to six wins. Syracuse still hasn't won a conference game yet, and is on a three game losing streak with a tough end of their year that includes Duke, Louisville and Wake Forest. But you can throw away records and previous games in a rivalry game where anything can happen.

Storylines Going Into This Game

Boston College needs to recover from the most lopsided loss of the Steve Addazio era, can they do that? Will Syracuse's stagnant offense find life against Boston College's struggling defense? Can Dennis Grosel find his footing again after looking overwhelmed against Clemson, or will BC just return to pounding the ball with AJ Dillon and David Bailey?

FSU Football: How did #Tribe19 play against Syracuse? (chopchat.com; Tschida)

After FSU football’s win over Syracuse on Saturday, Chop Chat’s Sam Tschida takes a look at how the true freshmen played against the Demon Deacons.

FSU Football got back in the win column on Saturday with a dominating 35-17 over Syracuse in Tallahassee. For the first time in several years, FSU put away a Power Five by the end of the third quarter and made it a much more relaxing game for ‘Noles fans everywhere.

One of the biggest factors in the win was the play of the true freshmen, who received a ton of snaps during the game. Here’s how they did.

Offense

For the first time in a long time, two true freshman offensive linemen received a start for the ‘Noles. Dontae Lucas got another nod as a starter, his fifth of the season and first time at left guard, while Darius Washington took over starting duties at left tackle.

Both Lucas and Washington had themselves a nice day blocking wise. They helped pave the way for one of the best rushing attacks the ‘Noles have had in a long time (241 yards, 5.1 YPC). They also helped keep Alex Hornibrook relatively clean, allowing only two sacks against a decent Syracuse defensive line.
PFF grades have not come out yet, but Lucas once again showed flashes of how good he can be in the future. He controlled the middle of the line and opened big holes for Cam Akers, who had a career day. However, Lucas did leave the game with an injury in the second quarter and did not return.

Washington played very well in his first start against a pair of very good outside edge rushers for the Orange. He didn’t fare as well in pass protection, allowing two quarterback hurries and a sack, but was very good at run blocking for the ‘Noles.
Inhabit;ord=7327601930275.817;dc_seg=756255014

He does a great job here of getting to the second level and driving the linebacker way back into the end zone (and is joined on a double team by Lucas, who made a mistake by not helping #60 at the line of scrimmage).

The block helped open a hole for a touchdown and was indicative of how well Washington run blocked the entire day.
Washington was solid all night, but he will have a big test next week against a stout Miami front seven.

Bowl Projections: Oklahoma Loss Shakes Up Playoff (SI; Shapiro)

No Syracuse

The race for the College Football Playoff received a dose of intrigue on Saturday as Big 12 favorite and previously-undefeated Oklahoma lost at unranked Kansas State. The Sooners were a likely lock for the Playoff if they finished conference play undefeated, in the same boat as Clemson in the ACC. The winner of Penn State and Ohio State on Nov. 23 is a likely playoff team. Ditto for the survivor of LSU and Alabama’s battle on Nov. 9. We exited Week 8 with a fairly conventional Playoff picture.

Oklahoma’s loss tosses that outlook aside. LSU or Alabama could lose in early November and still reach the Playoff as a one-loss non-SEC champion. Oregon and the Pac-12 are suddenly alive once again, as are Florida and Georgia. We could be in line for a mad scramble down the stretch.

Holliday: UNC is the big winner of wacky weekend in Coastal :: WRALSportsFan.com (wralsportsfan.com; Holliday)

First-place Virginia falls to Atlantic Division upstart Louisville. Second-place Pitt goes down in the final minute at home against sixth place Miami, which last week lost to seventh-place Georgia Tech. Old rivals Duke and North Carolina, seemingly mired in the middle of the conference standings, stage a tense duel decided in the final seconds on a jump pass thrown by a running back. And now suddenly, UNC has a chance to earn a rematch with Clemson in the ACC Championship Game! Welcome to the wild and wacky Coastal Division, where almost nothing is as it seems.

Virginia's loss to Louisville rates as the Coastal's biggest news. The Cavaliers, who were nationally ranked just a couple of weeks ago, led much of the way in the Falls City, but quarterback Bryce Perkins suffered a knee injury. He left the game for a series, then returned. Perkins did not run effectively afterward, gaining just 22 yards on 13 carries for the day. Perkins is Virginia's best threat on the ground. Also, in the third quarter, with the game tied at 14, the Cavaliers' best defender Jordan Mack was ejected for targeting. Louisville quickly scored once Mack was off the field, and the Cardinals controlled the remainder of the game with their explosive running attack. U of L rolled on the ground - for 227 yards. Virginia leads the ACC (or did) in rushing defense, allowing a scant 97 yards in conference games.

Virginia's fate was sealed just before 7pm Saturday as Duke and Carolina were deadlocked at 17 in the 4th quarter. Which team would take advantage of Virginia's downfall and move into a first place tie with the Cavaliers at 3-2? Both the Blue Devils and the Tar Heels had their chances.

Louisville football report card: Grading Cards win over UVA (BRL; Lane)

In front of a small(er) but ruckus crowd with less than ideal conditions, Louisville football pulled out another huge victory defeating Virginia 28-21 to move to 5-3 (3-2) on the season. Here are the Cardinals’ grades.

Louisville football is one win away from being bowl eligible with four games remaining on the 2019 schedule. If I’m being honest, that’s not a sentence I thought I’d find myself writing in Scott Satterfield’s first season as the head coach for the Cards.

That became reality on Saturday when Louisville football pulled out arguably their toughest win of the season against a gritty and well-coached Virginia team, 28-21. Now somehow in a season where the expectation was to be the doormat to the ACC in a rebuilding year behind Scott Satterfield, who ESPN labeled as being in “year zero,” Louisville finds themselves in the thick of things to make the 2020 Orange Bowl.

Yes, you read that right.

Saturday was the perfect summation of the 2019 season. There were times in the game where Louisville flat out looked like they weren’t ready to play. To the credit of Virginia, their defensive front seven at times looked like they were overpowering Louisville’s offensive line (especially in the second quarter) making every play more difficult than the last. While on offense, Virginia was able to take advantage of some weak points in the Louisville defense and looked ready to take the game and never look back.

But as we’ve come to expect, Louisville followed the game plan. They played hard, continued to run the football until Virginia couldn’t handle it, played sound, hard-mouth defense, and ultimately prevailed 28-21.

Sorting out ACC Coastal Division title scenarios (247sports.com; Crawford)

Heading into the final month of the regular season, the ACC Coastal is a cluttered mess.

Six teams are tied or within one game of the division lead after nine weeks, a sign of competitive parity and simply no program emerging as the obvious frontrunner on a consistent, week to week basis.

Both of the ACC's nationally-ranked teams are on the other side of the conference and the Coastal is now widely-perceived as the nation's weakest Power 5 division. Does this speak to bad play or overall balance? If Virginia wins out, the Cavaliers will become the Coastal's seventh different champion dating back to 2013, a first in college football.

In an era where parity if desired but rarely produced, this division wrote the book on unscripted chaos.

All it takes is a couple unexpected results to turn the division title race on its head and that's what happened in Week 9 after Virginia squandered a second-half lead at Louisville and Miami shocked Pitt on the road.

If there were favorites heading into the weekend, there aren't any now. Some teams are in better position than others, however.

"I told them yesterday that whatever you're doing to prepare, you need to do a little more," North Carolina coach Mack Brown said about this weekend's showdown vs. Virginia following Saturday's win over Duke. "If you're spending an hour on video, spend some more. If you're a scout teamer, you need to show us the picture. Go watch Virginia. Go watch the guy you're going to be and play and try to help us prepare for the game.

Syracuse Football: McKinley Williams ‘guaranteed’ a redshirt season (itlh; Esden Jr)

On Monday Syracuse football head coach Dino Babers provided an injury update. Here’s what that means for the future of McKinley Williams.

Syracuse football is drowning at 3-5 and they desperately need some of their injured guys back to help turn this thing around.

Unfortunately, one player they won’t be getting back is defensive tackle, McKinley Williams.

Orange head coach Dino Babers spoke with the media on Monday and was asked for an update on a variety of injured players:

“… (long pause from Dino Babers), I would say no to bear (McKinley Williams). I haven’t seen him. I’m going to say no then he’s going to pop up and you guys are going to get mad at me. I haven’t seen him all year so I don’t know why I’d say yes now. For the rest of the injured guys, I won’t know until later.”

If McKinley Williams doesn’t play he’ll be guaranteed a redshirt, per Stephen Bailey of Syracuse.com.
The reason being, there are only four games left in the season. With the new redshirt rule in college football, Williams can play in the remaining games this season and still possess the ability to redshirt and salvage his final collegiate season.
Williams is a senior in 2019, but Orange fans may get to save him for 2020 because of injury. Considering how this season has gone (3-5), perhaps it’s a blessing in disguise.

Tech giant Microsoft to open ‘smart cities’ hub in Syracuse, 3rd in nation (PS; Baker)

The software giant Microsoft plans to open a hub in Syracuse aimed at developing uses for new technology, aiding tech start-ups and training the workforce of the future.

Microsoft will establish a “Smart Cities Technology” hub as part of Mayor Ben Walsh’s Syracuse Surge plan to bolster the regional economy with high-tech jobs. It’s Microsoft’s third such hub in the nation and the first in the Northeast.

“It’s significant for us,” Walsh said Tuesday afternoon. “It’s third-party validation not only of the Surge and the strategy, but the partnership and leadership we have in the community.”

Microsoft announced similar hubs earlier this year in Louisville, Kentucky and Houston, Texas.

The Microsoft announcement reflects the second major corporation to show an interest in Walsh’s Surge strategy. Earlier this summer, JP Morgan Chase committed $3 million toward workforce training programs and to ensure economic growth included traditionally disenfranchised communities.
