The X-Ray was discovered by accident, as part of an experiment where Wilhelm Röntgen was attempting to ascertain whether or cathode rays could pass through glass. Nearby there was a chemically coated screen, and from it was emanating an odd glow, and dubbed the rays causing that glow X-Rays. Why you ask? Because he didn’t know what they were, so the ubiquitous ‘X for unknown’ was utilized. They’ve been called X-Rays ever since.
So what are x-rays really? They’re energy waves of electromagnetism that act in much the same way light rays do, but with an incredibly short wavelength. 1,000 times shorter than those of light to be precise. Once he discovered them, he began experimenting extensively with them, determining what they could and couldn’t pass through, and how they could be photographed. It was through this that he discovered that lead absorbed it almost completely, and human bone would stop it, creating a new and innovative way to see what was going on inside the human body.

NCAA rules help UMD, others inflate football attendance figures (cnsmaryland.org; Cooper)
Fifteen minutes before Maryland football’s Big Ten Conference bout with Illinois on Oct. 27, 2018, the vast pockets of space in the bleachers were apparent.
For a game that prompted more than 24,000 tickets to be sold, fewer than 11,000 were scanned into Maryland Stadium. But you wouldn’t know it when an announced attendance of 30,387 flashed on the scoreboard late in the second half.

The NCAA allows for announced attendance figures to be generated in two ways: either through actual attendance (tickets scanned) or through tickets distributed (tickets sold and complimentary tickets).
Matt Monroe, Maryland’s associate athletic director for ticket operations, called it “common practice” for programs to use the latter method. And that has allowed schools like Maryland to report totals that are far higher than actuality, even as scanned attendance numbers in college football continue to dip.
“I don’t really know of many places that would announce their actual numbers. Just because if a ticket is paid for, it’s distributed,” Monroe said. “You count that into your revenue, you count that into your season ticket totals and your totals for the game.”

Boston College vs. Syracuse: Reviewing The Game Film (Powered By WePlayed) SI; Maven)
Boston College completely dismantled Syracuse on Saturday 58-27, in a game where the Eagles gained over 650 yards, and only allowed seven points in the second half. But what did a second viewing of the game film say about the game? Using WePlayed I annotated game film and created a highlight reel of some of the big plays of the game. Here are some of the notes I took away from the game.
* Boston College's offense line played an incredible game. Lots of talk this year has been about how good the front five have played but this game was the icing on the cake. Watch some of the long runs by AJ Dillon and David Bailey. They blasted holes that Steve Addazio could have run through, and were either knocking defensive linemen back five yards or crushing linebackers and defensive backs at the second level. Alot of the talk this week was about the backs, who believe me, had a great game, but the hogs up front played out of their minds.
* In terms of an individual play, a lot of the talk on line was the play where AJ Dillon trucked Alec Lindstrom to gain extra yardage, but my favorite play was a play that didn't end up in the highlight reel. Early in the second quarter David Bailey looked like he was about to be wrapped up for a six yard loss. Zion Johnson ripped him from the defender, and basically bear hugged Bailey and dragged him forward about five yards to the line of scrimmage. It wasn't a game changing play, but a perfect encapsulation of how much more physical BC was up front.

The ACC in SP+, Week 11: Miami slays Willie Taggart (backingthepack.com; Muma)
Miami is as good an encapsulation of the ACC as anything else, what with losing at home to Georgia Tech while also beating both Virginia and Florida State. And the Hurricanes’ decisive win in Tallahassee last weekend done killed Willie Taggart, who was canned by FSU the next day.
Sometimes Miami is a confused mess, and sometimes its talent level shines through, and yeah I guess this really is the second best team in the conference this year. A team that still could end up going only 6-6.

Bowl Watch Week 11: UVA Finds Another Gear (streakingthelawn.com; Trogdon)
Virginia picked up a massive win at North Carolina Saturday night, snapping a three-game road losing streak and boosting their chances of winning the ACC Coastal Division in the process. The Hoos can wrap up the Coastal with home wins over Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech.
By beating the Tar Heels, the Virginia Cavaliers also clinched bowl eligibility and improved its chances of going to an attractive bowl game. Bronco Mendenhall’s team once again distanced itself in the ACC bowl “standings,” and now has the luxury of three-straight home games to end the season. Unlike its ACC Coastal foes, Virginia has moved past the most difficult part of its 2019 schedule.
Before we dive into bowl projections, it’s worth noting what UVA has accomplished under Mendenhall. Virginia missed the postseason nine out of eleven times from 2006 to 2016. That dismal stretch cratered the program’s perception and fanbase. A once-proud outfit under George Welsh in the eighties and nineties, Virginia became a laughingstock and league doormat.
The rebuild isn’t done yet, but Mendenhall has guided the Hoos to three-straight postseasons. It’s a stretch of continued competence that seemed out of reach for a generation of Wahoo football fans.

Florida State vs. Boston College Football Prediction and Preview (athlonsports.com; Ferguson)
Bowl eligibility will hang in the balance of an ACC Atlantic matchup Saturday as Florida State pays a visit to Chestnut Hill to take on Boston College.
Over the weekend, FSU fired head coach Willie Taggart, and while they may land a big name to replace him later in the year, the Seminoles have turned to long-time assistant Odell Haggins to salvage the season. FSU comes in with a 4-5 record and still has not won a road game this season.
After a 3-3 start, Boston College has won two of three and sits at 5-4. The Eagles blew out FSU in the last meeting in Chestnut Hill two years ago, 35-3. The Seminoles used a 74-yard touchdown pass from Deondre Francois to Tamorrion Terry to pull out a 22-21 victory over a ranked Boston College team last season.

When Boston College Has the Ball
Since the injury to quarterback Anthony Brown, Boston College finally showed some semblance of a passing game last week as Dennis Grosel passed for a career-high 195 yards and three touchdowns while completing 8-of-10 passes in a 58-27 win over Syracuse. Grosel will be the guy that FSU will try to force to win the game.

Louisville football: Cards vs. Miami game day central (BRL; Lane)
After a bye week, Louisville football will look to get bowl eligible on the road against the Miami Hurricanes. We preview the Cards’ most important game yet.
Prior to the season, you may have pegged Louisville football as a sleeper team to make a bowl game. But never in one’s right mind could even the most impassioned Cardinals fans have conceived Louisville one game away from bowl eligibility in game nine against the Miami Hurricanes.
Entering the season, both teams were on the mend. It would be unfair to say these teams were broken, but the Cardinals and the Hurricanes both lost their head coaches in 2018 and replaced them with exciting head coaches looking to rebuild.
Like Louisville, Miami has looked just “okay” at times and has dropped some real head-scratchers along the way. However, the Hurricanes are coming off of a monumental win at rival Florida State on Saturday and are looking to ride the momentum of their biggest victory of the season into their toughest challenge yet against a high powered Louisville offense.
A surface-level view of this game leads one to believe that Miami should be the heavy favorite, but those are the games in which Louisville has looked the sharpest this season.
The Cardinals pulled off a ranked win at No. 19 Wake Forest- which is still the Demon Deacons’ only loss- and most recently kept ACC Coastal leader Virginia at bay in an upset victory. Louisville held its own against Notre Dame, Florida State, and Clemson- all teams with far superior talent.

WHAT’S AT STAKE?
The reigning national champion Tigers are still rolling, both to a fifth straight Atlantic Coast Conference championship and another trip to the College Football Playoff. A stumble against the struggling and injury-riddled Wolfpack could wound the playoff pursuit.
KEY MATCHUP
Clemson’s WRs against N.C. State’s secondary. For the second straight week, the Wolfpack’s secondary has to overcome significant injury trouble against receivers putting up elite numbers for a ranked opponent. Last week it was against No. 22 Wake Forest. Now they face a group led by Justyn Ross and Tee Higgins. Sophomore De’Von Graves and redshirt freshman Malik Dunlap have started the past two games at cornerback, where N.C. State is already down Chris Ingram, Teshaun Smith and Taiyon Palmer for the season and hasn’t had Nick McCloud since the opener.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Clemson: RB Travis Etienne has played like the reigning ACC player of the year for the past month. The 5-foot-10 junior has gained 640 yards and six TDs in the last four games. His yards have come on just 56 carries (he’s out by early in the third quarter) for an average of better than 11 yards a rush.

Dabo Swinney did not hold pull any punches when asked once again about the strength of the ACC as a football conference.
It is a question that, for Swinney, is one that comes with a level of disrespect and ignorance that Swinney finds unpalatable. Thinking that it must be an agenda that the media has with not only his team, but the league as a whole.
“They (the media) has an agenda and it's unbelievable,” Swinney said.
In fact, Swinney would prefer that those members of the media that have any questions about the strength of the league refer to the facts saying, “Who do y'all work for and all that stuff? I have not been afraid to beat that drum with facts. Heaven forbid we let some facts get in the way.”
The facts are simple: In spite of the perceived lower tier of football being played in the ACC historically the ACC is one of the power conferences in all of college football.

Ever since that North Carolina game, Clemson has steamrolled its competition and is 3-1 against the spread. The Tigers’ only recent loss ATS was last week against Wofford as 48.5 point favorites (they still won by 45). Clemson’s mediocre performance against North Carolina set the stage for an undervalued team worth wagering on.

Against NC State, a team that is just 2-6 ATS and 92nd in the country in points scored per game, Clemson once again finds itself head and shoulders above its competition. NC State is unable to protect the quarterback against average teams and will find things even tougher against Clemson.
Clemson is 45 points better than NC State and should cover with ease once again.

Longest Win Streak: Clemson has won a nation's best 27 consecutive regular season games. The last time the Tigers lost a regular season game was at Syracuse on Oct. 13, 2017. Clemson has won 58 of its last 60 regular season games.
Clemson has also won 24 consecutive ACC games. That is the 2nd-longest streak in ACC history... The league record is 29 straight by Florida State from 2012-14.
Second Time Around: Odell Haggins coached the Florida State Seminoles to a 2-0 record as the interim head coach in 2017, and was named the interim coach Sunday after Willie Taggart was dismissed as head coach.

Wake Forest is having its best season since the Deacs won the ACC championship in 2006. They also faced Virginia Tech that year ranked - and with just one loss. The Hokies won that game, 27-6. However, because of a loss to Georgia Tech that season, the Hokies did not meet the Deacons again in the ACC Championship Game.

Walsh: Inclusion was key strategy in Syracuse getting Microsoft tech hub (wrvo.org; Magnarelli)
Microsoft has selected the city of Syracuse as the location for a new smart cities technology hub. It will provide help to startup tech companies, digital literacy and workforce training, and development of artificial intelligence.
The partnership is between Microsoft, the city of Syracuse, Onondaga County and Syracuse University. It builds on Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh’s Syracuse Surge initiative to expand the city’s tech sector and revitalize the south side. Walsh visited the Microsoft campus in Redmond, Washington this summer.
“Microsoft would not be here if inclusion was not a key component of our strategy," Walsh said. "Our vision is, not just to create opportunity for the sake of opportunity, it’s to create opportunity for all. By focusing on inclusion, that’s ultimately what set us apart from every other city across the country.”
The new countywide STEAM high school, focused on technology, and expanding the SUNY Educational Opportunity Center for adult workforce development, are part of that inclusion.
The Microsoft partnership started with SU’s School of Information Studies. The city already shares datasets with students on things like streetlights and snowplows. But David Seaman, dean of the iSchool, said the partnership will allow students to get city data in real time by utilizing Microsoft's software platforms.
"This allows Syracuse University students here in the iSchool, really to engage with live data," Seamen said. "So, this isn't a practice run. They will be working with real municipal data, coming out of all the devices going into the smart city initiative here, and offering feedback on that data."
The Microsoft hub will be located in downtown Syracuse, sometime next year.
