Welcome to Bacon Day!

According to the Bacon Day website, the day was created by Danya Goodman and Meff Leonard. They came up with the day as a way to celebrate bacon and The Simpsons. In The Simpsons episode "I Love Lisa," Homer asks, "Is it Bacon Day?" This is how the creators of the day tied the celebration of two things they love together.

So what's the story of bacon? Bacon is a popular treat cut from the meat of a pig. In the United States, bacon refers to meat from the belly of the pig, known as the pork belly. Bacon from the loin is called Canadian bacon. To make bacon, the pork is cured using salt, and is then dried, boiled, or smoked. The smoking of bacon is often done with hickory, mesquite, or maple wood, and flavors such as brown sugar or maple may be added. More often than not, bacon is pan fried, and it is popular as a breakfast food, in sandwiches like the BLT or club sandwich, as a complement to salads, and in wrapping other foods. "Bacon mania" has swept the United States and Canada since the late 1990's, where there has been a great increase in the amount of bacon being eaten, and in the amount of new bacon recipes. The high sodium and nitrate content of bacon that lower its health benefits has not seemed to much slow down the bacon craze.

New York Jets need a Syracuse football deep dive in 2020 NFL Draft; Part 1 (thejetpress.com; Edsen Jr)

The New York Jets should do a local deep dive ahead of the 2020 NFL Draft. Here’s an inside look at some of the top Syracuse football prospects.
The New York Jets owe it to themselves to look at every avenue to improve the roster during the offseason.
One place they haven’t explored recently but should do a deep dive in the 2020 NFL Draft is the local chapter of Syracuse football.

The Orange haven’t been all that relevant in the 21st century, but this current crop is worth monitoring.
Syracuse is graduating/sending over 22 seniors to the next chapter in their lives and for some of these players that include the 2020 NFL Draft.
Here’s a deep dive on the top offensive and special teams products coming out of the Syracuse football program this year.

Offense

1 MOE NEAL, RB

  • Who knows what the future will hold for all-pro running back Le’Veon Bell after a career-low season in 2019. So the green and white should do everything in their power to find diamonds in the rough in the backfield.
    • Moe Neal is a smaller back (5-foot-11, 195 pounds) but he brings some versatility (can line up at wideout and be used normally at tailback). In his four years on the hill, he combined for over 3,000 all-purpose yards.

Louisville wants payback vs Mississippi State at Music City (AP; Walker)

Both Louisville and Mississippi State have new coaches since the last time these programs met just two years ago — and of course Lamar Jackson also is long gone to the NFL.

There’s still some Cardinals who want a little payback from that last meeting when they meet Monday in the Music City Bowl.

“I know for me, yes I’m doing the best I can to make sure that we win this time ...,” Louisville junior guard Robbie Bell said. “I didn’t enjoy losing last time.”

Mississippi State has won all five games between the programs, though the Bulldogs had to vacate wins in 1975 and 1976. Louisville was so close to its first victory in the series in 2017, leading 24-17 in the third quarter of the TaxSlayer Bowl before losing 31-27. Defensive end Amonte Caban remembers the Cardinals’ problem well.

“We just didn’t finish in the end,” Caban said. “We just got to finish.”

That also applies to this group of Cardinals (7-5), who bounced back in coach Scott Satterfield’s debut season after going 2-10 in 2018. They did manage to wrap up the regular season with a 45-13 loss to Kentucky.

Virginia using blowout loss in ACC title game as lesson ahead of Orange Bowl (jornalnow.com; Wang)

Only days before playing in the Orange Bowl for the first time, the 24th-ranked Virginia football team continues to recount in detail its most lopsided loss of the season that unfolded more than three weeks ago.
Except the Cavaliers have been long through stewing over that 62-17 result against No. 3 Clemson Dec. 7 in the ACC championship game.

The first-time ACC Coastal winners instead have been dissecting each play from the blowout as part of their preparation for ninth-ranked Florida on Monday night at Hard Rock Stadium, the next step in what Cavaliers Coach Bronco Mendenhall refers to as “unbroken growth.”

“Our loss to Clemson was falling forward,” Mendenhall said. “Meaning, I put it in the same category as our first game against Virginia Tech down there (a 34-31 loss in overtime), our loss to Navy in the bowl game, and now that one. I view those as critical moments in the program.

“I hate the losses, but I love the learning. I put those three together, and some of the most impactful things that have happened since I’ve been the coach at U-Va., with the potential to help us go to places we couldn’t have as early without being in those, as painful as they are.”

Clemson in the College Football Playoffs: 8 things LSU fans should know about those other Tigers (theadvocate.com; Flores)

for gbo

To be the man, you have to beat the man, as the old adage goes, and No. 1 LSU will get the chance to do just that in the College Football Playoff championship in New Orleans.
College football's grand finale will pit the Tigers against those other Tigers — No. 3 Clemson — after Clemson held on to beat No. 2 Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl on Saturday night.
While the two programs have squared off before in the past, it hasn't happened often. Catch up on important numbers and players to watch in this clash of Death Valley dwellers with this handy guide.

1. Clemson in 2019:

Overall Record: 14-0
Season Accolades: ACC regular season, conference champions; defense leads NCAA in points allowed (10.6) and yards allowed (244.7), offense ranks third in total yards (547.7)
Rankings: Preseason AP: 1; AP highest; 1; final AP: 3; CFP: 3
Key Wins: No. 12 Texas A&M (24-10); No. 22 Virginia (62-17); No. 2 Ohio State (29-23)

2. Defending Champs

The Clemson Tigers are the defending national champions after beating Alabama in the 2019 College Football Playoff championship game on Jan. 7 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence stole the show as a freshman, completing 20 of 32 passes for 347 yards and 3 touchdowns in the Tigers’ 44-16 win over the Crimson Tide. They’ll now compete for their second straight national title after the Tigers’ comeback win vs. Ohio State in the Playstation Fiesta Bowl.

3. LSU holds edge in series, but ...

LSU and Clemson have met three times — all in the postseason. The Bayou Bengals hold a 2-1 series lead, beating Clemson in the 1959 Sugar Bowl (7-0) and the 1996 Peach Bowl (10-7). Clemson, however, holds the most recent win from the 2012 Peach Bowl (25-24).

Clemson Tigers in Arizona (again!) (RX; HM)

Clemson Tigers in Arizona (again!)

This year's semi-final round marks the third time in the short CFP playoff era that the Clemson Tigers have been shipped out to Phoenix, AZ. USA Today pointed out that "Clemson spent more than $5 million on last two College Football Playoff trips to Arizona" - but the cost of traveling there isn't even the biggest issue...

The CFP Selection Committee has cheated Clemson out of favorable location at every turn. Consider where the Tigers have had to play, and under what circumstances:

Clemson 29, Ohio State 23 (RX; HM)

Clemson 29, Ohio State 23

Wow!

I just witnessed one of the hardest-fought, heavyweight title type football games I've ever seen. It's a real shame this was the semi-final and not the championship, because I have to think both teams left pretty much everything on the field. That said, X can be glad that there are 16 days before the finals.

The Fiesta Bowl was more than just one game - it was three...

First, there was the first half before the targeting call, in which the Ohio State defense dominated the Clemson offense. The Buckeyes were also able to move the ball on offense, eventually building a 16-0 lead. Ohio State actually scored four times, but three of them were field goals - and that proved critical later on.

Then came the big hit on Lawrence. It wasn't originally called targeting, but the replay officials overturned the call on the field. That call gave the Tigers a first down of course, and they went on to score their first touchdown on that same drive, aided by a pass interference call against Ohio State.

Clemson continued to struggle on offense despite that, but then they hit on the thing the Buckeyes were giving up on defense: the QB run. And boy, did they give it up! Lawrence scored the second Clemson TD on a 67-yard QB draw play. A 3rd quarter TD pass to Etienne gave the Tigers their first lead at 21-16.

2020 Football opener at Clemson, Louisville, or Syracuse?

lumberpack

Which do we want?
It would be nice to open on the Wednesday the Third or Thursday the Fourth to give a little extra time to prepare for Mississippi State on the 12th.
Watch it be the Monday before at Clemson.

WUF84
Clemson or Louisville. If we loose to Sorrycuse the first game, we all know the rest of the season will be a crap show.
Probably going to be Clemson...probably even more likely if they win it all.

Stella's Diner opens its second location (PS; Doran)

Stella’s Diner has opened a second location, this one in Camillus in the old Pizza Hut building on West Genesee Street.
The new restaurant opened quietly at 5:30 a.m. today at 3709 W, Genesee St., just past the Fairmount Fair Plaza. The building has been vacant since the Pizza Hut closed in 2017.

Mary Martin, one of three sisters who own the diner, said they wanted to make sure they had everything in order before making a big announcement about their opening. All is going well, she said.

Martin said they had wanted to open before this, but there were delays in the renovations. Customers have been stopping in this morning.

"We love the neighborhood, and the location is great - right next to a church,'' she said.

Stella’s, which opened in 1999, has been at 110 Wolf St. since 2003. Sisters Mary Martin, Betty Stellakis and Judy Stellakis run the diner.

The Camillus diner is smaller than the Syracuse diner, and has about 40 workers. The menu and hours are the same.
Stella’s opens at 5 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday to Wednesday and 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday to Saturday. Sundays the diner is open 5 a.m. to 6 p.m.
