Welcome to Feast of the Ass!

The Feast of the Ass was a Christian feast during medieval times, which was mainly celebrated in France. It celebrated all of the donkeys of the Bible, especially the one that was believed to have brought Jesus and his family into Egypt after Jesus' birth, during what is known as the Flight into Egypt. At that time, the family was fleeing the killing of young boys by Herod the Great. Another example of a donkey in the Bible is the one that Jesus rode on into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. It is also believed that a donkey was in the stable in which Jesus was born. First celebrated during the eleventh century, the holiday is connected to the Feast of Fools, and was inspired by the pagan Roman festival Cervulus.

Can Syracuse Claim Victory with Ed Orgeron’s Success? – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Amendolara)

LSU’s magic season of 2019 will forever live as a four-month waltz through the state of Louisiana, no matter the outcome of the national championship game. Of course, in SEC country faltering at the finish line is rarely cause for celebration (remember it “just means more” around those parts). But from Joe Burrow’s record-setting Heisman season, to the road win at Tuscaloosa, and a league championship in Atlanta, the Bayou Bengals have had a few additions to the trophy case whether they beat Clemson or not (and plenty of oddsmakers are looking at this line for college football betting in Michigan and other states).

The man at the top of this run is Ed Orgeron, a guy cut from central casting in the swamps of Louisiana. His cajun drawl, his raspy voice, his larger-than-life persona, all fit the job so well. But as much as Coach O is LSU through and through, he actually can thank Syracuse for his life raft moment.

After being dismissed from the Miami coaching staff for a bar fight and off the field reasons, Paul Pasqualoni added him to his SU staff in 1995. Coach O took over the defensive line duties and poured his heart and soul into it. The team adored him, his players crying openly when he left for USC after three seasons in CNY.

Coach P was a great defensive mind, and saw something in Orgeron. He saw a passion that paralleled his own, a toughness that Pasqualoni always identified with. Coach O and Coach P, two initials with a hard-nosed edge, were kindred spirits, even if Paul was a much more reserved man in the public eye.

Former Syracuse tailback Jim Brown named college football's best player by ESPN (cnycentral.com; Hauswirth)

Former Syracuse University running back Jim Brown was honored on a national stage Monday night.
During halftime of the College Football Playoff National Championship Game between No. 3 Clemson and No. 1 LSU, Brown was recognized on a stage with other former college football players when he was named the sport's best player in its 150 years.

ESPN made the announcement, picking Brown over the likes of Herschel Walker (2), Bo Jackson (3), Archie Griffin (4) and Jim Thorpe (5).

This year marks the 150th season for college football, signaling the end to a season-long campaign where teams across the country wore a special "150" patch on their jerseys.

Brown has long been thought of as one of the greatest college football players in the history of the sport, if not the best.

He finished fifth in the 1956 Heisman Trophy balloting, recording 123.3 rushing yards per game and was voted a unanimous All-American during his senior season in 1956.

Orange Watch: A letter regarding scheduling to Syracuse AD John Wildhack - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: Catching up on some future Syracuse football/basketball scheduling we’d like to see in the years ahead, while we were watching Villanova host Kansas this past (Sat.) Dec. 21 at the Wells Fargo Center; thinking that should have been the Jayhawks playing in the Dome in a 12:00 ET tipoff, not in South Philly.

Hi, John.

From a fellow Newhouse grad to another, thank you for the great work you have accomplished on many fronts in your tenure as Director of Athletics.

As an Orange fan as well as an administrator, you recognize and prioritize the stakeholders in your leadership role, and have been applauded for your quick responses and dialogue back/forth with many inquiring minds throughout Orange Nation.

Our request for you to consider is a “wish list” to schedule a home-and-home series with the one biggest name in college football and the one biggest name in college basketball that have never played on campus in the modern era at the (soon-to-be-renovated) Dome.

That would be the Alabama Crimson Tide, and the Kansas Jayhawks, respectively. (As you’re aware, Alabama did play at Archbold Stadium in 1923, a 23-0 Syracuse domination.)

Of the Top 10 FBS programs with all-time wins, only Alabama (No. 3) and Southern California (No. 9) have not played in the Dome. The only Div. I basketball team in the Top 10 in all-time victories not to play in the Dome is No. 2 on the list – Kansas.

We’ve written about this previously in our “Orange Watch” column, a couple of months before you took over in the summer of 2016.

For football, we figure if LSU can agree to a home-and-home series to balance out its non-SEC schedule as it did with SU in 2015 and 2017, then perhaps ‘Bama, with one-year SU assistant (1977) Nick Saban possessing a loud voice to your Tide counterpart Greg Bryne, could do the same with another ACC team?

According to FBSchedules.com, Alabama does have a home-and-home series scheduled with Florida State in 2025-26 and Virginia Tech in 2034-35, perhaps there’s room for Syracuse as well?

Syracuse Football: Sterlin Gilbert brings unique perspective to the Orange (itlh; Queripel)

Syracuse football has a new look now after hiring Sterlin Gilbert to lead the team’s offense. We will give you all the details.

Syracuse football is moving into the offseason off a disappointing 5-7 year. Already, head coach Dino Babers has made changes to his staff for the 2020 season.

The offense underperformed this year, and it was clear that the offensive coaching was a factor. To counter that issue, Syracuse has reportedly hired Sterlin Gilbert to become the team’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, the news has yet to be confirmed by the University.

First, let’s take a look at Gilbert’s resume and his ties with coach Babers. To begin his coaching career, he primarily worked for high schools in Texas from 2003-2011 except for a one year stint as a graduate assistant with the University of Houston.

In 2012 his relationship with Dino Babers commenced.

Gilbert was named the offensive coordinator at Eastern Illinois when Babers was the head coach. Gilbert followed Babers to Bowling Green in 2014 but then went his own way. In total, the new Syracuse signal-caller has led five collegiate offenses since 2012.

His career has been marked by moving from job to job, but now Gilbert has an opportunity to settle in as the offensive coordinator in the ACC. Most recently, he held the post as the head coach of McNeese state, which went 7-5 in his only year with the squad. Gilbert also followed head coach Charlie Strong from USF to Texas, which are the two largest programs currently in Gilbert’s resume.

College Football Rankings: Way-too-early Top 25 projections for 2020 (saturdayblitz.com; Bigalke)

The 2019 college football season is now officially in the books. That means it is already time to take an early look at how the Top 25 will look for 2020.

College football is a sport of endless speculation. Before a season begins there is eternal hope, as teams ponder the possibilities of running the table and landing a spot in the College Football Playoff or one of the New Year’s Six bowl games. Everyone’s slate is wiped clean, and fans have every opportunity to dream big.

This cycle begins as soon as the previous season goes into the books. Programs celebrating bowl victories anticipate a boost in the rankings, while teams that lost their final games of the season are left to downplay the significance of those defeats. The early signing period has passed, allowing fans to dream about how new talent might impact their favorite squads in a positive way.

In that regard, even when it is too early to start looking ahead in earnest it is never really too early to start projecting forward. College football is a news cycle that never sleeps, with something to talk about 365 days a year.
Now that Clemson and LSU have completed the 2019 season with the College Football Playoff national championship game, now is as good a time as any to start looking ahead. Here is how Saturday Blitz sees the preseason polls looking in August. Read ahead for our Way-Too-Early Top 25 projections.

Bayou Bengals are top Tigers: LSU beats Clemson to win college football’s national title (wtkr.com; Winkler)

Joe Burrow threw five touchdown passes, ran for another score and capped one of the greatest seasons in college football history by leading No. 1 LSU to a 42-25 victory against No. 3 Clemson on Monday night to win the national championship.

The small-town Ohio kid turned Louisiana legend delivered the Tigers (15-0) their first national title since 2007 and fourth overall, breaking a few more records along the way in what was already an historic season. The five TD passes and 463 yards passing are the most for a BCS or College Football Playoff title game as are his six total touchdowns.

He became the first major college quarterback to throw 60 touchdown passes in a season as LSU snapped defending national champion Clemson’s 29-game winning streak. For the first time in his college career, Clemson star quarterback Trevor Lawrence was on the losing team. The Tigers (14-1) had won his first 25 starts.

But on this night, Lawrence (18 for 37 for 234 yards) was no match for Burrow — the Ohio State transferred who threw all of 16 TD passes last season with LSU.

His ascent has been dizzying and unprecedented. Running a version of the New Orleans Saints’ offense that was brought to LSU by 30-year-old assistant coach Joe Brady, Burrow and an array of talented receivers transformed these Tigers into one of the most prolific offenses college football has ever seen.

It was coach Ed Orgeron’s vision for LSU when he was promoted from interim coach in 2016. There was plenty of skepticism when LSU tabbed the Cajun who had failed in his first crack at head coach with Mississippi.

Final: Clemson 25, LSU 42 (RX; HM)

Final: Clemson 25, LSU 42

First, congratulations to the LSU Tigers - that was the best-looking offense I've seen in years in college football.

Second, nothing to be ashamed of for Clemson - you guys won 29 games in a row; everybody loses once in a while.

Next year LSU's Burrow is gone but Lawrence returns for Clemson.

Until next time...

CFB-150 Top Players Announced (RX; HM)

CFB-150 Top Players Announced

The CFB-150 released their Top 11 players of all time during halftime of the national championship game:
Top 11 college football players of all-time honored at halftime of @CFBPlayoff title game:

1-Jim Brown
2-Herschel Walker
3-Bo Jackson
4-Archie Griffin
5-Jim Thorpe
6-Red Grange
7-Earl Campbell
8-Dick Butkus
9-Barry Sanders
10-Gale Sayers
11-Roger Staubach
— Brett McMurphy (@Brett_McMurphy) January 14, 2020
Only one of these played for a current ACC team - but if you're only going to have one, let it be the #1 player of all time: Jim Brown, RB, Syracuse.

Time to address the big orange elephant in the room...

Was Brown the right pick?
Jim Brown was dominant in his day, no doubt, but I'm equally confident he wouldn't stand out today - there's too much defensive talent now. In addition, I'm just not convinced he was the best anyway. I mean, Herschel Walker was dominant, too. Archie Griffin won TWO Heisman Trophies. Want an all-around athlete? Jim Thorpe. Want a bruiser? Earl Campbell. Want to know who I'd take if we're picking teams? Barry Sanders!

Odds rising for ’significant winter storm’ this weekend (PS; Coin)

The chances are increasing that several storm systems will combine forces this weekend to bring snow or a rain-snow mix to Upstate New York, forecasters say.

“A significant winter storm is in the offing for next weekend,” said the National Weather Service. “While it is way too early to speculate on amounts, this is definitely a storm worth watching.”

The devil will be in the details, of course, and many of those won’t be known until the storm builds across the Midwest later this week. If the current forecasts play out, Upstate will be sandwiched between two low pressure systems, one tracking across the Great Lakes and another setting up off the New England coast, sometime Friday through Sunday.

The key, according to forecasters at the weather service’s Binghamton office, is that low pressure system off the coast. The timing and exact location of that will determine whether precipitation comes as all snow or as a mix of snow and rain. Also in the mix is a third, high pressure system in Canada will deliver the cold air needed for snow.

Computer models aren’t agreeing yet on the timing and strength of those systems.

I am talking football careers, not just college careers, because that is apparently what ESPN decided to do.

Brown made the Browns a major NFL power. They were great when he was on them. He averaged more yards per carry rushing and more yard per catch receiving than Barry Sanders.

He was a lot bigger, and lot stronger, was also a terrific blocker and an outstanding defensive player.

Barry's Lions teams were crappy. To be an all time great, don't you need to lead your team to greatness? Not even sure Barry was the best RB on his college team.

Jim is a whole different class of player than Barry, who was a great scatback (maybe the best scatback ever). Barry is a hall of fame caliber RB.

Jim Brown is the greatest football player ever.

You brought it, sir!
