Welcome to Rosa Parks Day!

Rosa Parks Day celebrates the legacy of Rosa Parks, a woman who is a symbol of equality, civil rights, and the American Civil Rights Movement. The holiday is celebrated on either February 4, her birthday, or on December 1, the anniversary of the date in 1955 on which she refused to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Various states officially observe the holiday on one of the two dates. Some municipalities officially mark the day as well. The holiday can also be observed unofficially on either date by all who wish to do so. Beyond remembering the legacy of Rosa Parks, the day promotes civil rights and equal opportunities in the present day. Events and activities are often organized by church leaders, politicians, and leaders of organizations. In classrooms, the holiday is marked with activities focused on Rosa Parks and her fight against discrimination and for equality.

Some states mark the holiday on February 4, on Rosa Parks's birthday. The California State Legislature designated the day in 2000, and it was first celebrated on Friday, February 4, 2000. In subsequent years, the holiday has been observed on the first Monday following February 4. In Missouri, the General Assembly set the day aside in 2006, and it was first observed the following year. Illinois first observed it in 2019, after the passing of a Senate Resolution. In Michigan, the Legislature designated the day in 1997 with the passage of Act 28. It is observed on the first Monday after February 4 and was first observed in 1998.

5 Syracuse moments in the 2020 Super Bowl: Did you see them all? (watch) (PS; Herbert)

An estimated 100 million people watched Super Bowl LIV to see the Kansas City Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers, 31-20, on Sunday night. Whether you were tuned in for the game, the Super Bowl commercials, or Shakira and J. Lo’s halftime show, you might have also seen a little bit of Syracuse.

Here are five Syracuse moments that aired during the 2020 Super Bowl -- did you see them all?

1. NFL 100 All-Time Team: Jim Brown and Marvin Harrison

In honor of its 100th season, the NFL named the 100 greatest players of all time during the pre-game festivities at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla. Mixed Reality was used in a tribute video, but many members of the elite NFL 100 All-Time Team -- including Syracuse football greats Jim Brown and Marvin Harrison -- were on the field wearing red jackets with the league’s 100th anniversary patch. A third Syracuse University alumnus, John Mackey, was also named; Mackey died in 2011.

Incredible.

2. Post Malone’s Bud Light commercial

Syracuse native Post Malone starred in a Super Bowl commercial for Bud Light Seltzer, the new hard seltzer made exclusively at Anheuser-Busch InBev’s Budweiser plant in Baldwinsville. The Grammy-nominated rapper, known for hits like “Sunflower,” “Rockstar” and “Congratulations,” was born in Syracuse and lived in the area until he was 9.

Syracuse Football: Alton Robinson, Kendall Coleman appear in mock draft (itlh; Esden Jr)

A pair of Syracuse football players (Alton Robinson, Kendall Coleman) appeared in a prominent mock draft on Monday. Here are the details.

With Super Bowl 54 officially behind us, it’s now NFL draft season!

This means the attention now turns to a pair of former Syracuse football studs in Alton Robinson and Kendall Coleman.

So far so good, we’ll start with Coleman who was up to bat at the annual East-West Shrine Game a few weeks back.

Kendall dominated in practice creating some palpable buzz among the NFL draft analysts and more importantly the NFL teams in attendance. If that wasn’t enough NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah labeled Coleman his “defensive MVP” of the week.

“Coleman was the most consistent player all week. His dip-move is outstanding and no one here at the Shrine Bowl had an answer for it.”

The following week his former running mate on the defense Alton Robinson got his opportunity to shine at the Reese’s Senior Bowl. Unfortunately unlike Coleman, Alton was wildly inconsistent during practice all week leading many scouts to question how he would translate to the pros.

Luckily we were just talking about practice as Allen Iverson once said. When we got to the actual Senior Bowl game, Alton showed his true colors.

He dominated in the game registering a pack of sacks and arguably could’ve had a third if he wasn’t held on a play. Robinson displayed an array of pass-rushing moves from ripping inside, to a bull rush, to a speed rush on the outside and it all proved effective.

On Monday Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller revealed his first full seven-round mock draft that featured 255 selections. Here’s where he pegged the two former Syracuse football stars.

ACC continues to lag behind SEC and Big Ten in revenue (backingthepack.com; Muma)

If the money bubble is going to burst on major college athletics, it doesn’t look like that will be anytime soon. The SEC announced recently that it hauled in over $650 million during the 2019 fiscal year, putting its per-school payout at nearly $45 million.

As Bruce Feldman and Andy Staples explain in this article for The Athletic, the SEC and Big Ten are soaring well ahead of the other power conferences in revenue. The schools in those two leagues are investing accordingly, and the disparity is most striking in football—SEC and Big Ten programs are able to spend more on coaches, sure, but also facilities, recruiting, and support staff. Support staffs have been ballooning in major college football—Feldman and Staples note that national champion LSU has more than a dozen analysts and interns on staff—and it makes a considerable difference for the programs that can afford them.

The ACC’s 2019 earnings aren’t public yet, and while the league should show continued revenue growth, it’s still going to be way behind those other two conferences. The ACC made $465 million in 2018, for example.

That figure put the league’s payouts on par with the Pac-12 and a little behind the Big 12. But the ACC’s outlook is certainly better than the Pac-12’s, thanks to the ACC Network, and may be better off than the Big 12 as well. The Pac-12 has actually reported shrinking revenues because its network has been such a disaster. While the other league networks have a major media partner (FOX in the Big Ten’s case, ESPN for the SEC and ACC), the Pac-12 decided to run its own show, and the result has been a struggle for distribution.

The thing to watch for the ACC is how much its new network bumps revenue in the first year. It’ll help relative to the Pac-12 and Big 12 but isn’t going to close the gap on the others, which have better-established networks in higher demand. Both the SEC and Big Ten are set to negotiate new television deals in 2023, and you can bet the SEC will be making a whole lot more by leaving CBS for an ESPN package.

It’s a tough reality for most of the schools in the ACC, NC State certainly among those, It’s tough enough to build a winning program here, and harder still when you can’t even match resources with, like, Purdue or Mississippi State.

What can the ACC do about the gap? Part 1 (RX; HM)

What can the ACC do about the gap? Part 1

Last week we posted something about the latest SEC conference payouts, and how we expect the financial gap between the SEC and ACC to grow even bigger. Some thought I was too optimistic, while others thought I wasn't optimistic enough. This is a big issue, and fans are passionate about it.

The biggest problem the ACC faces, IMO, is that it's trying to fix a problem in 2020 that was created gradually over the last 70 years... it took time to get into this situation, and it will take time to get out.

Here are the facts of the case:

  • The ACC is locked into a long-term media rights contract with ESPN which includes all sports for the next 16 years (ends in 2036).
  • The ACC is locked into 5th place bowl contracts through 2025.
  • The ACC has 4 schools within a few miles of each other in North Carolina.
  • The ACC has 6 private schools (7 if you count Pitt), most with small-ish enrollments.
Of course, while the ACC itself lags behind the other power conferences, some ACC schools do pretty well, financially-speaking. GTSwagger (owner of the CSNBBS fan site) points out:
Louisville looks pretty clearly more competitive in athletics across the board relative to Kentucky. Pitt and Georgia Tech... with the right leadership, can again cast their in state cow colleges into the role currently occupied by [The University of] South Carolina [Gamecocks]...
He is convinced that Georgia Tech can be MUCH more competitive now that the school has better athletic leadership. So, the question is, are all 14 ACC schools doing all they reasonably can to compete in football? GTS thinks that's "highly questionable"...
I would argue there are some major programs that by are large are not seriously competing. Vanderbilt phones it in on football and uses the TV payday to instead fund an elite baseball team. There's some of that going on in the ACC too...

Bye week bonanza for Notre Dame and every Power Five program (onefootdown.com; Vowles)

After the ACC announced their 2020 football schedule and (unsurprisingly) made sure to have three of its programs penciled in for a bye before facing the Notre Dame Fighting Irish — fans started wringing their hands over the schedule quirk.

Perhaps it was just an overreaction. (Also a chance to roll our collective eyes at seeing the Clemson Tigers as one of the teams with a BYE before Notre Dame). After all, three ACC opponents had byes last year, and the Irish won those games. In fact, over the last 3 years, Notre Dame is 14-1 against its ACC foes (not including the Cotton Bowl).

https://hookemheadlines.com/2020/02...should-choose-longhorns/(hookemheadlines.com; Miller)

Former Michigan Wolverines talented wide receiver Tarik Black is reportedly considering the Texas football program as a possible transfer landing spot.

A former standout wide receiver of the Michigan Wolverines, Tarik Black, put his name in the NCAA Transfer Portal earlier in the offseason. And the Texas football program is reportedly one of the few in contention to land him out of the transfer portal. The other programs that appear to be in contention to land the services of Black out of the transfer portal are the Arizona State Sun Devils, Virginia Cavaliers, Boston College Eagles, and Miami Hurricanes.

Texas and Arizona State are the only two non-ACC college football programs that are reportedly in contention to land Black. Maybe another program sneaks into his mind, but it’s interesting that no other teams from the Big Ten went after him with any traction. Texas makes for one of the more appealing landing spots if he is seeking out another blue blood to play for too.

Miami is making their living off the transfer portal of late. Former Texas defensive coordinator Manny Diaz is trying to bring the Canes back to life by building his program off of transfers and then assembling what looks to be a pretty solid 2021 recruiting class. But there’s a good while before that 2021 recruiting class will make their way to campus for Miami and be ready enough to make an impact on the gridiron in Coral Gables.

Here’s a look into the three definitive reasons why former Michigan Wolverines highly touted four-star wide receiver recruit Tarik Black should choose the Texas Longhorns football program when he makes his decision out of the transfer portal.

The ACC flat out screwed up waiting to start a stand-alone channel. We are so far behind now it's embarrassing.
