Welcome to Valentines's Day!

Valentine's Day originated as a Western Christian feast day honoring an early Saint named Valentine. It is still an official feast in some denominations, although the day was removed from the Catholic General Roman Calendar because not much information was known about the Saint. The day is now also a cultural and commercial holiday centered around romance and love. It is celebrated in many places around the globe, although it is not a public holiday. Symbols associated with the day are the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of a winged Cupid.

There was actually not just one Saint Valentine, but three. The first and most noteworthy was Saint Valentine of Rome. He was a priest in Rome, was martyred in 269 CE, and was added to the calendar of saints in 496, by Pope Galesius. Legend has it that Valentine was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to get married, and for ministering to and assisting Christians who had been persecuted under the Roman Empire. It also is said that he cut hearts from parchment and gave them to persecuted Christians and soldiers, to remind them of their vows and God's love. Another legend says that during his imprisonment he healed the blind daughter of his jailer, and sent her a letter before his execution, signing it as "Your Valentine." Saint Valentine is buried on the Via Flaminia.

SU football rated as ACC’s worst team in ESPN SP+ ranking (PS; Burrows)

Syracuse football is projected as the worst team in the ACC next season, according to ESPN’s preseason SP+ ranking.

Developed by ESPN writer Bill Connelly, SP+ is a projection of a team’s efficiency using factors like returning production, recruiting and recent success.

Here’s more from Connelly on SP+:

SP+ is intended to be predictive and forward-facing. That is important to remember. It is not a résumé ranking that gives credit for big wins or particularly brave scheduling — no good predictive system is. It is simply a measure of the most sustainable and predictable aspects of football.

Virginia Tech football: Salary numbers revealed for revamped staff (gobblercountry.com; Manning)

When Bud Foster announced his retirement before the 2019 season, fans wondered which direction the Virginia Tech Hokies would go in looking for his replacement. The Hokies tried for former Missouri coach Barry Odom, who coached under Justin Fuente at Memphis, but that become a bit more costly than the Hokies apparently felt comfortable with.

Instead, Fuente promoted safeties coach Justin Hamilton to defensive coordinator and many in Hokie Nation were concerned. Make no mistake, Hamilton is loved at Virginia Tech. However, Hamilton only had two years of FBS coaching experience and he was promoted to replace one of the greatest defensive coordinators in the history of college football.

Naturally, everyone was curious on what Hamilton’s salary would be and how athletic director Whit Babcock would allocate the funds after Foster’s coaching salary came off the books. Thanks to some recently released numbers, via Mike Niziolek of The Roanoke Times, we now have our answers.

Hamilton will earn $600K in his first season as defensive coordinator while new linebackers coach Tracy Claeys will earn $500K. Claeys, a former defensive coordinator at multiple schools and briefly a head coach at Minnesota, is earning a nice salary based on his experience.

Adam Lechtenberg, who was promoted to running backs coach to replace Zohn Burden, will make $200K, after making $175K last season in his post on the player development side.

Bill Teerlinck, who was the defensive line coach for the Buffalo Bills last season, will earn $400K his first season in Blacksburg. We aren’t sure on what he earned in the NFL last season. His co-defensive line coach, Darryl Tapp, the former Hokie great, will earn $175K after spending last season as an assistant special teams coach at Vanderbilt. Fans high hopes for the DL combo known as “TnT.” Charley Wiles made $280K as defensive line coach last season and is making considerably more now at N.C. State.
