In fact, it was just five weeks ago when SU returned to the field to start prepping for the 2020 season. Since then, the novel coronavirus pandemic has thrown it all in disarray, threatening the upcoming college football season in a way not seen since World War II, when several universities, including Syracuse, did not field a team in 1943. The change has been so sudden, so drastic, university officials around the country have been modeling out various scenarios for what the 2020 season might look like. ABC/ESPN broadcaster Chris Fowler, the sport’s lead play-by-play voice, was the latest to offer his insight Monday, citing conversations with key figures appraised of what’s on the table. Three scenarios were laid out in a video posted to his Instagram account. 1. The season starts on time For this to happen, Fowler believes clarity must be had by the end of May as it pertains to college campuses opening back up. That’s an aggressive timeline, he said. 2. The season is delayed into the fall Fowler is skeptical of a delayed or shortened season given the concerns of the virus returning in late autumn when the weather turns cold in the Northeast and across the Midwest. Starting up, only to shut down, would be disastrous. 3. The season is pushed back to the spring semester Fowler said this scenario is “gaining momentum." So after taking a little more than a week to digest the offer and think about his recruitment, the 6-foot-1, 191-pound Folk made a decision on his future. “I have committed to Syracuse University,” Folk said. “I have developed a great relationship with the staff over my high school career and I really fell in love with the school and the football program.” Although Folk was not able to visit campus after the offer because of the NCAA-mandated coronavirus shutdown, he knows plenty about the school, and the football program. He talks with the coaching staff regularly and he was on campus for the season finale against Wake Forest, and the memory of being inside the Carrier Dome stuck with him. He was also on campus in late July for an unofficial visit. “Syracuse is a great school academically and they play high-caliber football in the ACC,” said Folk, who lives four hours south of Syracuse. “It is also close to home so my family can come and see all of my games. I also think I would be a good fit in their defense. The 2019 season picked up a bit with the year of “thrown into the rapids” swim lessons, but not without having the coaching staff make some serious errors in player talent judgement. Neither season has produced any sort of draft potential for the largest of the recruiting impressions. In fact, if it wasn’t for an early out, we’d have exactly no draft prospects. The reasons why Dalton Keene decided to forego his final year of eligibility are entirely of his reasoning. Some folks think that it was the rough dismissal of his mentor Charly Wiles. Some people have postulated that his role as a mult-back (hybrid Tight End/H-Back/Fullback) was unsatisfying for his professional prospects. We know how it all settled out for Sam Rogers. He was drafted in the upper “no guarantee rounds” by the LA Rams, and just never managed to make the team even though he showed every bit of the hustle that he demonstrated for Frank Beamer and Justin Fuente. He’s coaching his high school football team, now. That’s wonderful, it truly is, but it’s not a pro career. Maybe Keene just saw his pro prospects heading for the 6th round and a slightly better shot than a UDFL prospect?
