Welcome to National Laundry Day!

Even though National Laundry Day and Tax Day often land together on April 15, remember to keep these two activities separate. Anybody who has ever recovered a $20 bill from the washing machine knows why.

That said, we generally don’t love doing laundry. However, we’re thrilled when it’s done. Think clean clothes, fresh sheets, and that special fresh laundry scent. (Do you have a favorite dryer sheet fragrance? If you must know, we here at National Today are partial to something in a lavender.)

The word “laundry” comes from two Welsh words, “lloon,” or crazy, and “dyrte,” or dirty. The Welsh jokingly called the English “lloon dyrtes” and with time it morphed into “laundered.”

SU News

6 key dates, and how they help inform us on SU football season (PS; Mink)

In any other year, this is when the Syracuse University football team would be putting a bow on its spring practice workouts.

In fact, it was just five weeks ago when SU returned to the field to start prepping for the 2020 season.

Since then, the novel coronavirus pandemic has thrown it all in disarray, threatening the upcoming college football season in a way not seen since World War II, when several universities, including Syracuse, did not field a team in 1943.

The change has been so sudden, so drastic, university officials around the country have been modeling out various scenarios for what the 2020 season might look like.

ABC/ESPN broadcaster Chris Fowler, the sport’s lead play-by-play voice, was the latest to offer his insight Monday, citing conversations with key figures appraised of what’s on the table.

Three scenarios were laid out in a video posted to his Instagram account.

1. The season starts on time

For this to happen, Fowler believes clarity must be had by the end of May as it pertains to college campuses opening back up. That’s an aggressive timeline, he said.

2. The season is delayed into the fall

Fowler is skeptical of a delayed or shortened season given the concerns of the virus returning in late autumn when the weather turns cold in the Northeast and across the Midwest. Starting up, only to shut down, would be disastrous.

3. The season is pushed back to the spring semester

Fowler said this scenario is “gaining momentum." The thinking goes like this: More should be known about containing the spread by then, and it limits the financial havoc a lost season would wreak on athletic departments across the country.

Syracuse lands safety Malcolm Folk (247sports.com; Dohn)

Syracuse offered Newtown Square (Pa.) Episcopal’s Malcolm Folk earlier this month, and it was exactly what the safety was looking for in a school.

So after taking a little more than a week to digest the offer and think about his recruitment, the 6-foot-1, 191-pound Folk made a decision on his future.

“I have committed to Syracuse University,” Folk said. “I have developed a great relationship with the staff over my high school career and I really fell in love with the school and the football program.”

Although Folk was not able to visit campus after the offer because of the NCAA-mandated coronavirus shutdown, he knows plenty about the school, and the football program.

He talks with the coaching staff regularly and he was on campus for the season finale against Wake Forest, and the memory of being inside the Carrier Dome stuck with him. He was also on campus in late July for an unofficial visit.

“Syracuse is a great school academically and they play high-caliber football in the ACC,” said Folk, who lives four hours south of Syracuse. “It is also close to home so my family can come and see all of my games. I also think I would be a good fit in their defense. They run a 3-3-5 and they see me in the ‘Rover’ position, which I feel best suits my skill set.”

Folk also connected well with Orange coach Dino Babers, and not just when speaking about football.

Virginia Tech’s NFL Draft List is Exactly One; Dalton Keene (gobblercountry.com; Fahvaag)

There aren’t any two ways to say it, 2018 and 2019 were tough seasons for Virginia Tech in the prestige department. The team fell apart between 2017 and 2018, leaving inexperienced Freshmen and a sprinkling of upperclassmen to play the 2018 season. The inexperience showed. So did the disappointing level of talent left. The 2019 season picked up a bit with the year of “thrown into the rapids” swim lessons, but not without having the coaching staff make some serious errors in player talent judgement. Neither season has produced any sort of draft potential for the largest of the recruiting impressions.

In fact, if it wasn’t for an early out, we’d have exactly no draft prospects. The reasons why Dalton Keene decided to forego his final year of eligibility are entirely of his reasoning. Some folks think that it was the rough dismissal of his mentor Charly Wiles. Some people have postulated that his role as a mult-back (hybrid Tight End/H-Back/Fullback) was unsatisfying for his professional prospects. We know how it all settled out for Sam Rogers. He was drafted in the upper “no guarantee rounds” by the LA Rams, and just never managed to make the team even though he showed every bit of the hustle that he demonstrated for Frank Beamer and Justin Fuente. He’s coaching his high school football team, now. That’s wonderful, it truly is, but it’s not a pro career. Maybe Keene just saw his pro prospects heading for the 6th round and a slightly better shot than a UDFL prospect? I don’t know, but whatever the reason he’s our only legitimate draft prospect this year.

What colleges are doing to deal with reduced revenue...

At some schools the coaches are taking a small pay cut.

Wake Forest head coach Dave Clawson is taking a voluntary 10 percent pay cut. Coach Dave Clawson Volunteers Pay Cut Amid COVID-19 Pandemic - Wake Forest University Athletics

At other schools, non-revenue sports are being cut.
BREAKING: The University of Cincinnati has discontinued men’s soccer effective immediately.

At least one conference is seeking an NCAA deviation to allow even more cuts (i.e. below the minimum number of sponsored sports).
NEW: @YahooSports obtained a letter from Group of 5 Commissioners to NCAA President Mark Emmert asking for "temporary relief from several regulatory (NCAA) requirements for a period of up to 4 years." Among them are sports sponsorships minimums, which hints at more sports cuts.

Meanwhile, SEC bagmen are reducing payolla, too.
Sources: Ole Miss football players have agreed with boosters to take a voluntary 10% pay cut for the duration of the pandemic

Links, news and rumors - 4/15/20

From CBS Sports: Why Miami's D'Eriq King is poised to have a Joe Burrow-like impact for the Hurricanes in 2020

To put it bluntly, Miami has been gosh-awful on offense. Like, so awful that Miami's time in the ACC these last 16 years has been marked mostly by not having a quarterback who could lead it to a championship...

[New Miami Offensive Coordinator Rhett] Lashlee completed a successful two-year run at SMU by becoming a 2019 semifinalist for the Broyles Award (best assistant coach). Here's a hint of what Miami can become: The Mustangs finishing second nationally in plays per game (79.8) while running a play every 21.7 seconds...

...King is 5-foot-11, 194 pounds. That's five inches shorter and 20 pounds lighter than Burrow. But as a run-pass threat, King is a more complete … run-pass threat. King has rushed for 1,500 yards and 28 touchdowns in his career... Burrow is a better thrower. Actually, he's one of the best single-season throwers of all time...

Drama In Dome | News, Sports, Jobs - Post Journal (post-journal.com; Kindberg)

EDITOR’S NOTE: The following appeared in The Post-Journal on Nov. 30, 2014, the day after Randolph Central School pulled off a stunning victory in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class D championship football game at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse. This article is another in the newspaper’s “Remember When?” series.

SYRACUSE — Randolph football coach Brent Brown stood in a tunnel at one end of the Carrier Dome on Saturday afternoon, pulled his cellphone from his pocket and saw it was figuratively blowing up with text messages, 15 in all.

Among them was one from Pat Slater, the Cardinals’ legendary former coach, who is now retired and living in Florida.

“Are you kidding me?,” his text read. “Fantastic.”

“Fantastic” may be one of the more conservative adjectives used to describe what happened on Ernie Davis Legends Field on the campus of Syracuse University.

CNY diner wins national coronavirus grant: ‘It’ll help pay the rent’ (PS; Cazentre)

Dave and Lisa Laffin and members of their family are still in the kitchen of the diner they own in the town of Onondaga. They’re still preparing the full menu.

Now, it’s about to get a little easier to keep the Finally Ours diner open during the coronavirus pandemic.

Finally Ours won one of 10 initial grants issued by the social network Bumble to small businesses nationwide affected by the pandemic and the resulting loss of customers and income.

Each grant is $5,000. That’s enough to make a difference, Dave Laffin said.

“It’ll help us pay the rent this month," he said.

Finally Ours opened in 2015 at 3788 W. Seneca Turnpike (Route 175), near the corner with Cedarvale Road. It got its name because Dave and Lisa Laffin had worked together at other diners, such as the Gardenview in Liverpool and The Gem in Syracuse’s Inner Harbor before “finally” opening their own place.

"SEC bagmen are reducing payolla "

Hopefully everyone realizes that's just a joke, right? SEC bagmen are NOT reducing payolla.

If anything, I'd imagine they're stepping up their games.
The best defense, is a good offense! :p
