Welcome to I Love Reeses's Day!

Today we celebrate the candy that brings chocolate and peanut butter together, the Reese's® Peanut Butter Cup, as well as the man who created it, Harry Burnett Reese. In 2010, Hershey sponsored an online petition to declare May 18 as I Love Reese's® Day, and it was signed by 40,000 fans. May was chosen as the time because the holiday would then be sandwiched between National Peanut Butter Lover's Day in March, and Chocolate Day in July. As part of the first celebration, Reese's gave away 10,000 Reese's® Peanut Butter Cups.

In 1917, H.B. Reese began working on a Hershey dairy farm, and in the early 1920s, he started working at a Hershey candy factory. At that time he began making candy in his basement, in part because he was well on his way to having sixteen children and needed to make some extra income to support them. He used various fresh ingredients and coated them in Hershey's chocolate.

Meet SU football's top recruiting target at linebacker (PS; Mink)

One of the top defensive players on Syracuse football’s recruiting board has never been to a traditional summer football camp. That was supposed to change this year. The plan, before the novel coronavirus effectively shuttered camps, clinics and on-campus recruiting, was to log hundreds, if not thousands, of miles on a cross-country drive, making pit stops at campuses across America to try to earn more scholarship offers.

“I hope you’re ready,” Jason Henderson’s coach told him.

“I’m ready," Henderson said.

Like most everything else since March, the coronavirus quashed those plans.
The NCAA this week extended the recruiting dead period through the end of June, wiping out camps that were on the calendar and other in-person evaluations.

Instead of a road trip with his coach and his coach’s son, Henderson will quietly try to visit as many college campuses on his list of possible destinations with his family, hoping to find one that feels right.

He may make the approximate 3-hour drive from his home in Milford, Pennsylvania, along the Delaware River, to Syracuse University this weekend with his parents to walk the campus, but NCAA rules prohibit any face-to-face contact with coaches.

It all makes for another unusual recruitment in a year full of online meetings and video tours. Still, Henderson has a good idea where he stands on Syracuse’s defensive board. He doesn’t need an in-person workout to validate what shows up on tape.

Syracuse football is still a big possibility to happen this fall (itlh; Mlodzinski)

ACC commissioner, John Swofford, believes that they will play football in the fall. This is obviously the type of news Syracuse football fans want to hear.

On May 14, ACC commissioner, John Swofford said, “We are going into this year with the anticipation of playing at this point.” This is music to the ears for Syracuse football players, coaches, and fans.

Much speculation has gone into if college football will go on in the fall. Separate from all of the other collegiate sports, FBS college football is not sanctioned by the NCAA. In other words, they can go their own route, should NCAA commissioner, Mark Emmert decide to cancel other fall sports.

This brings up a multitude of options. One popular one, is that the power five conferences could play their own season separate from the other FBS teams. This may also include league-play only, no out of state or travel, or other changes to what a normal schedule may look like.

However, Swofford mentioned that as of now, all 15 ACC football schools does intend to bring students back in the fall of 2020, in one way or another. Previously, it had been noted that Boston College, Pittsburgh, and yes, Syracuse, had still made no decision. While SU still hasn’t, this does shed light on the fact that a plan is in the works, which would be huge for the conference as a whole.

Syracuse football in a recruiting bruiser for elite 2021 safety Josh Moore (itlh; Adler)

Josh Moore, a three-star 2021 safety, has put Syracuse football among his half-dozen finalists, but the Orange is likely a long-shot to win out.

Josh Moore, a three-star safety in the class of 2021 whose high-school teammate recently committed to Syracuse football, has whittled his massive scholarship list down to six contenders, including the Orange. That’s the happy stuff.

Conversely, the challenging news for the ‘Cuse is that Moore’s other five programs which remain in the mix are stellar academic schools, and he’s clearly an exceptional student. Noted on his Twitter page is that Moore holds a 4.15 grade-point average.

His half-dozen finalists, which Moore unveiled in a tweet, are Syracuse, Northwestern, Boston College, Notre Dame, Duke and Stanford. Pretty hefty competition. From a pure football standpoint, one would have to think that the Fighting Irish is in great shape, given Notre Dame’s pedigree.

says on its Web site bio for the 6-foot-2, 195-pound Moore that he has received a total of 38 offers. The 247Sports Web site notes that Moore’s scholarship offers from Stanford and Notre Dame came on May 12 and May 6, respectively.

To that end, some Internet chatter of late from recruiting analysts has centered on the Cardinal and the Fighting Irish seemingly having solid momentum with Moore, who is a rising senior at the Marist School in Atlanta.

Bob Asmussen's preseason rankings: Top 100 games of 2020 (news-gazette.com; Asmussen)

1. Ohio State at Oregon, Sept. 12

From beat writer Bill Rabinowitz of the Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch

If this game is played, it will be one of the biggest nonconference games of the season. Ohio State is likely to be No. 2 behind Clemson in the preseason polls, led by quarterback Justin Fields and a strong supporting cast. The Buckeyes thumped Oregon to win the 2014 College Football Playoff title. While Ohio State has remained a perennial national-championship contender, Oregon hit a lull before re-emerging under coach Mario Cristobal. The Ducks lost quarterback Justin Herbert and most of its offensive line. But it returns perhaps the country’s top offensive lineman, Penei Sewell, and a victory over the Buckeyes at Autzen Stadium would be huge for the Ducks and the Pac-12 as a whole.

2. Alabama at LSU, Nov. 7

The Clash of the SEC titans. Both teams are without their star quarterbacks from 2019. And both are considered national title contenders.

Louisville football recruiting: Defensive end Ashton Gillotte commits to Cards (BRL; Meyer)

Louisville football landed its eighth commitment of the 2021 class in defensive end Ashton Gillotte.

The depth in the trenches continues to grow for Louisville football. This time, it’s in the form of 2021 defensive lineman Ashton Gillotte.

It has been known that the Cardinals coaching staff is dead set on fortifying the talent and depth along the offensive and defensive lines, and that has been apparent by the type of players to come off the board early in this class.

The Cardinals secured Victoine Brown, the No. 28 strongside defensive end and 434th player overall according to 247Sports, back in March. This week, rising weakside defensive end Ryheem Craig pledged to the Cards. Now, Gillotte becomes the third defensive lineman in the first eight players.

Trevor Lawrence is the nations best QB by a wide margin (rubbingtherock.com; Benedict)

for gbo

If everyone is being truthful, Clemson football quarterback Trevor Lawrence is the best signal-caller in the country and there isn’t a close second.

Trevor Lawrence has been the quarterback of the future since he was 14. Everyone knew then that he was special and what he accomplished playing Georgia High School football may never be seen again. It was not until they were rising seniors that Justin Fields joined the conversation from a national level.

There are late bloomers and Fields was definitely one of those. Fields had offers entering his junior year after making the rounds at school camps but he was not ranked among the nations best at that point in time. Trevor had been the top player in the country for more than two years at that point.

As we have seen with Bubba Chandler, all it takes is one big offer and the rest start rolling in. With Fields UGA, Alabama, Texas, Florida, and Florida State all offered at the conclusion of his junior year. That attention got him placed on the Netflix show QB1.

Meanwhile, Trevor Lawrence by that point had already had more than 100 offers, was committed to Clemson, and able to focus on his development.

While the SEC is playing chess, the ACC is still playing checkers (theclemsoninsider.com; Vandervort)

Usually at this time of the year, John Swofford and the good folks at the Atlantic Coast Conference offices in Greensboro, N.C., will sit back and catch their breath and start to enjoy their summer vacations.

However, as they ACC wrapped up its annual spring meetings last Friday, Commissioner Swofford acknowledged there will not be too much rest and relaxation this summer for his league or any of the major conferences in intercollegiate athletics.

“This is going to be a very different summer than we are used to in college athletics,” he said. “A lot of times when we leave the spring meetings, you can take a deep breath, relax awhile and kick back at the ACC Baseball Tournament and enjoy that.

“But that’s not the case. That’s another terrific event we are going to miss in the ACC. I told our group today that it’s often said the only constant in life is change. And certainly, we are seeing that right now in a very unexpected way that none of us could have really predicted.”

The change of course is COVID-19. The ACC and other major conferences, such as fellow Power 5 leagues the SEC, Big Ten, Big 12 and the Pac-12, are trying to strategize when there might be a return to play this coming fall.

However, no one seems to have a definite answer on when that might be.

“Intercollegiate athletics has never been in a more challenging situation in my career than it’s in now. But you can say that about so many aspects of our country,” Swofford said. “So many people are so negatively impacted by all of this in various ways in the loss of lives and the loss of jobs and everything that goes with that and the pain that this is creating.

Ekwonu Rated Among ACC's Top Returning Tackles (SI; Friedlander)

NC State’s current quarterback situation might be as uncertain as the potential starting date for the upcoming 2020 season. But whoever ends up winning the job, he can at least be secure in the knowledge that his blind side will be protected.

Offensive tackle Ikem “Ickey” Ekwonu was one of the few positives to come out of the Wolfpack’s injury-plagued 2019 football season.

Based on the experience he gained during a promising rookie year, the 6-foot-4, 308-pound Charlotte native has been selected by PFF College as one of the ACC’s highest-graded returning offensive tackles.

He was given a grade of 80.5, raking third in the conference behind Clemson’s Jordan McFadden at 88.3 and Virginia Tech’s Christian Darrisaw at 80.7.

Sapakoff: Rating ACC and SEC football coaches from 1-28; Dabo still on top (postandcourier.com; Sapakoff)

A college football season and its aftermath always bring surprises.

Among our most recent examples:

Mr. Ed Orgeron of Baton Rouge, La., going from that stodgy uncle to a mastermind of thorough dominance.

Tennessee’s Jeremy Pruitt rocketing from suspect to sizzling.

The state of Mississippi cornering the market on intriguing hires with Mike Leach and Lane Kiffin.

Not so surprisingly, all six of the coaches fired last year were in the bottom half of the 2019 SEC/ACC head coach rankings, with three (No. 25. Chad Morris, No. 27 Matt Luke and No. 28 Willie Taggart) in the bottom four.

Ranking criteria?

Past accomplishments (relatively speaking), present vibe, future outlook.

Of course, we’re all spending extra time at home hoping 2020 brings a healthier world and some kind of college football season.

North Carolina, Wake Forest offer an idea to the Pac-12 (trojanswire.usatoday.com; Zemek)

Do you remember one specific — and weird — episode from the 2019 college football season? North Carolina and Wake Forest played each other… but the game was a nonconference game, not a game which counted as part of the ACC standings or the division races in the ACC.

Wait, WHAT? Yes, it happened.

Why and how did this take place?

Very simply, the ACC — as a 14-team conference — has an eight-game league schedule in which division teams play six games within their division and two games outside it. Some of the division games are set games, such as North Carolina (ACC Coastal) playing rival North Carolina State (ACC Atlantic) every year. This means North Carolina plays seven ACC teams every year. It doesn’t play the other ACC teams in the Atlantic Division with great frequency — not in conference play. It can’t play more than one rotating (new) opponent per year under the current ACC scheduling structure.

Therefore, playing Wake Forest in a nonconference game was North Carolina’s workaround. The game didn’t count in the ACC standings, but the Tar Heels were able to play an in-state team from their own conference.

North Carolina and Wake Forest played only three times from 2008 through 2018, only once from 2013 through 2018. This is why the two schools played a “nonconference” game.

All of this should give Pac-12 teams an idea in any instance involving a schedule change this season.

ACC Coaches in High Risk Group (RX; HM)

ACC Coaches in High Risk Group

When we talk about whether to play college football this Fall, we generally think about the safety of the fans and usually that of the players, but... what about the coaches? Some of the head coaches are in the highest-risk group in terms of their age.*

At 68 years old, Mack Brown (UNC) is tied with Butch Davis (FIU) and Nick Saban (Alabama) as some of the oldest coaches in FBS. According to data collected by Worldometers (see below), age is a critical factor in terms of risk of fatality if a person contracts the Coronavirus.

Here's the list of ACC-related head football coaches, from oldest to youngest, with estimated risk of death:

Why is cloudy Syracuse suddenly a solar farm magnet? (PS; Moriarty)

Syracuse, one of the cloudiest cities in the U.S., is drawing lots of interest from solar farm developers.

Projects have been proposed recently for multiple solar energy projects in Syracuse suburbs, including these that came before the Onondaga County Industrial Development Agency just this week:

  • In Cicero, Convergent Energy has proposed building two 5-megawatt solar farms on 44 acres off Totman and Island roads for $24.4 million.
  • In Clay, Green Street Power Partners has proposed building a 5-megawatt solar farm on 30 acres at 9177 Caughdenoy Road for $8.1 million.
  • In Lafayette, Green Street Power Partners has proposed building a 3.8-megawatt solar farm on 18 acres off Sentinel Heights Road for $6.1 million.
  • In Lysander, OYA Solar has proposed building 5-megawatt and a 1-megawatt solar farms on 11 acres off Church Road for $11.3 million.
Solar farms are sites covered with solar panel arrays that turn sunlight into electricity. The power they generate is fed into the electric grid through power lines. (Though sometimes referred to as “non-wire” power generators, they are not completely wireless.)

They have the advantage of requiring no fuel and give off no emissions.

But Syracuse is the 14th cloudiest city in the nation, getting an average of only 46% of possible sunshine annually, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration data looked at by NerdWallet.

So why is Syracuse suddenly a popular place for solar farm developers? Solar industry officials cite three reasons.

First, there’s a lot of demand for solar power throughout Upstate New York, not just Syracuse. The Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act signed into law by G
