Welcome to Dinosaur Day!

Today we celebrate those large, extinct reptiles: dinosaurs. Scientists believe they first appeared about 245 million years ago, at the beginning of the Middle Triassic Epoch, and existed for about 180 million years, going extinct about 66 million years ago, at the end of the Cretaceous Period. The period when they lived is called the Mesozoic Era. During this time they went through many changes, and various species of dinosaurs replaced other species. Some dinosaurs were bipedal, meaning they walked on two legs, and some were quadrupedal, meaning they walked on all fours. Some switched back and forth. Some were covered with feathers, while others had what was almost like body armor. Some ran fast, and others were slow; most were herbivores, but some were carnivores. There were at least 700 species of dinosaurs, and possibly more than 1,000.

There were big biotic changes at the end of the Cretaceous Period, and many other animals and plants died at that time as well. There are many theories as to why dinosaurs died out, including disease, heat waves, cold spells, changing sea levels, a large amount of volcanic activity, the emergence of egg-eating mammals, or from X-rays from an exploding supernova. One other common theory is that an asteroid smashed to earth, spread ash widely, and shifted the earth's climate. However, it is not believed that all dinosaurs died out at the same time. Rather, it is believed they had been declining during the last part of the Cretaceous Period. Scientists also believe that some dinosaurs may have evolved into birds.

Syracuse Football is a real contender for George Rooks (itlh; Lee)

Syracuse Football has seen early recruiting success. One of their biggest success might not be a commitment but chances of one in top prospect George Rooks.

Syracuse football’s 2021 recruiting class has gained momentum over the recent weeks with eight commits already. Dino Babers and his staff have been busy but are far from done. Solid depth has come with their current commits but a commitment from someone like four-star prospect George Rooks will certainly help give this class additional firepower.

Rooks, a defensive lineman from St. Peter’s Prep in New Jersey, has received the attention of many schools. According to 247sports.com, Rooks has 20 offers, all from Big Ten, ACC, and SEC programs plus Notre Dame.

Per 247sports, these other offers come from a bunch of dominant teams, including Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, Auburn, Michigan, Penn State, Tennessee, Nebraska and West Virginia.

Among the additional scholarship offers from ACC schools are Pittsburgh, Boston College, Miami, Duke, Louisville and Georgia Tech, according to 247sports.

Notre Dame is who 247sports predicted as Rooks’ landing spot. However, according to Adam Friedman (@RivalsFriedman), a Recruiting Analyst for , the leader in the pack might just be Syracuse.

Duke football gets commitment from QB, adding 2021 recruiting class (balldurham.com; Connelly)

The Duke football team added to its already impressive 2021 recruiting class with the addition of quarterback and Alabama native Riley Leonard.

It's another win on the recruiting front for David Cutlfiffe and the Duke Blue Devils as the program received a commitment on Monday afternoon from Riley Leonard, a prostyle quarterback from Alabama.

The Blue Devils beat out Syracuse, Vanderbilt, and Nebraska for the services of the Fairhope, Alabama native.

Leonard stands at 6-foot-4, 190 pounds and starred at Fairhope High School not only on the gridiron but also on the basketball court.

The two-sport athlete also held basketball offers from Missouri State, Samford, UAB, and North Alabama after averaging 20.9 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.

While his accomplishments on the court are impressive, he also showed what he can do on the football field completing 102 of 172 passes for 1,231 yards and running for just under 500 yards and eight touchdowns in his junior season.

Syracuse football linebacker depth will take small hit if Juan Wallace leaves (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football reserve linebacker Juan Wallace Jr., who has entered the transfer portal, will reduce the Orange’s depth at that position if he departs.

Juan Wallace Jr., a reserve linebacker with Syracuse football who hails from Washington, D.C., said on Monday that he will enter the transfer portal, although he does have the ability to come back to the Hill if he chooses.

The 6-foot-2, 227-pound Wallace, a three-star prospect in high school, is a rising junior who played in 11 contests for the Orange during his sophomore campaign, primarily as a member of the kick-off return and punt-coverage units, per his bio on cuse.com.

Wallace, who overall has suited up in 24 games for Syracuse over two stanzas, saw spot duty on defense as a sophomore, tallying seven tackles, including two that were solo.

He did play a role on an Orange punt-coverage crew that, in the most-recent term, ranked fifth nationally in punt-return yardage defense (1.7 yards per return) and set the school’s single-season record for the fewest punt-return yards allowed (17), says cuse.com.

I would like to thank Syracuse University for the past 2 years and for giving me an opportunity of a lifetime. But at this time, I’ve decided to enter the transfer portal #AG2G

My first Syracuse game: Stories from Dome, Archbold, Manley (Part 2) (PS; Axe)

We asked for your stories from the first sporting event you attended in Syracuse and boy did you deliver.

The email box lit up with stories from the Carrier Dome, Archbold Stadium, MacArthur Stadium, Manley Field House and more.

Let’s get right to your stories. If you missed part one of this series, you can check it out here.

Cheer for the Chiefs

My first Syracuse game experience was in the early 1970s, old MacArthur Stadium. The Chiefs vs. Yankees exhibition game. There were so many people there, they had the warning track roped off for “standing room only” as most of the tickets were general admission. I went with my Dad and my brothers.

2020 NCAA Academic Progress Rate: Football APR Rankings By Conference (CFN; Staff)

The NCAA released its annual report of the Academic Progress Rate, or APR, measuring the improvements and academic success for the 2018-2019 school year.

From the NCAA, the APR is calculated as follows:

  • Each student-athlete receiving athletically related financial aid earns one point for staying in school and one point for being academically eligible.
  • A team’s total points are divided by points possible and then multiplied by 1,000 to equal the team’s Academic Progress Rate.
  • In addition to a team’s current-year APR, its rolling four-year APR is also used to determine accountability.
So which teams got the job done in the classroom? Here’s the APR ranking by conference …

Six Syracuse Football Players Now on NFL Rosters - Downtown Sports Network (downtownsportsnetwork.com; Bay)

A total of six former Syracuse University football players are now on NFL rosters. Defensive end Alton Robinson and punter Sterling Hofrichter were drafted in the 2020 NFL draft. After the draft’s end, though, four past Orange also signed contracts to join NFL teams. They’ll now join each team’s 90-man roster and compete for a spot on the final 53-man roster. Here is a look at each of the six players:

ALTON ROBINSON, DE, 5TH ROUND TO THE SEATTLE SEAHAWKS

Robinson earned All-ACC honors in two of his three seasons at Syracuse. He finished his career seventh in school history with 19.5 sacks and tied for ninth with 32.5 tackles for loss. In 36 career games (34 starts) from 2017-19, Robinson recorded 115 tackles, including 46 as a senior.

Robinson was initially projected to be a third-round pick, but an altercation he had in high school with an ex-girlfriend may have led some NFL teams to be wary of selecting him.

However, Seahawks head coach Pete Carrol was more than happy to find Robinson in the fifth round. “I’m really fired up that we were able to get Alton [Robinson] where we got him,” coach Pete Carroll said after the draft. “He’s got the ability and the production to do stuff like guys that were picked quite a bit higher. We were fortunate to get that done.”

NFL.com analyst Lance Zierlein believes Robinson could outplay his draft slotting and become a valuable member of the Seahawks for years to come. He named the Syracuse standout one of his three favorite picks in the fifth round.

Former Fizz: Damon Amendolara (SU 1997-2001) – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; podcast; May)

Former Fizz is a new interview series where we talk with previous Orange Fizz staff writers about Syracuse sports from when they were on campus. Topics include specific players and games, special memories and of course Jim Boeheim throughout the years. You can listen to all of the episodes on the Orange Fizz SoundCloud or orangefizz.net.

On the first episode, Damon Amendolara is the special guest. Damon is the Founder and Editor in Chief of Orange Fizz and was a student at Syracuse University from 1997-2001. He remembers how special Donovan McNabb and Dwight Freeney were on the gridiron, as well as Big East days on the hardwood. The interview is below, followed by an abbreviated Q&A from the discussion. We hope you enjoy!

QUESTION: Who were some of the football players that stood out while you were a student?

ANSWER: Donovan McNabb during my first two years and Dwight Freeney later on.

QUESTION: How great were McNabb and Freeney as college athletes?

ANSWER: Freeney was a little undersized, but he was molded and developed into the amazing player people know him as. McNabb was a carry over from Syracuse’s glory years from the 1980’s and 1990’s. He was the last great quarterback for SU before the program dropped off. McNabb was the king on campus.

QUESTION: Of the four years you were on campus, which was the best football team and roster?

ANSWER: Definitely 1998 because that was McNabb’s final year and he was a polished product, and he had a lot of NFL talent around him such as Kevin Johnson, Rob Konrad, Quinton Spotwood and Morlon Greenwood.

On Recruiting:
NCAA Division II allows in-person recruiting in June

...college teams been in a very tough position... The pandemic has put a halt on in-person recruiting, forcing coaches to find unique ways to recruit. But that might be coming to an end soon.

While the NCAA extended its recruiting dead period through June 30 just last week, NCAA Division II made it permissible for in-person recruiting on college campuses for the month of June... depending on the local health guidelines and decisions made by the respective conferences.

This is notable for Division I schools for two reasons... [1] it could serve as a bit of a trial run for Division I schools. If on-campus recruiting goes well for Division II schools... [2] it could point to the potential of a decision for Division I schools coming soon.

Recruiting has already been changed massively during the coronavirus pandemic in multiple ways. One way in college football is that teams are currently allowed to contact 2021 football recruits more... allowing unlimited calling for coaches when it came to the recruitment of 2021 prospects... This is a one-time waiver...

New York, California, Texas governors says states ready to host pro sports again - FootballScoop (footballscoop.com; Barnett)

New York State’s Andrew Cuomo on Monday joined the chorus of governors calling for a return of professional sports inside his state borders.

“Hockey, basketball, baseball, football — whoever can reopen — we’re a ready, willing and able partner,” Cuomo said Monday during his daily news conference.

He repeated the claim on Twitter.

New York State is ready and willing to partner with major sports teams that are interested in playing games safely, without fans.

If our professional sports teams can make it work (& be safe) on their end, we’re supportive.

— Andrew Cuomo (@NYGovCuomo) May 18, 2020

The announcement is significant because New York State has emerged as the epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak in the United States. The Empire State has had 355,347 confirmed cases and 27,515 measured deaths thus far, accounting for 23 percent of the case load and 30 percent of the fatalities nationwide. New York State’s population of 19.45 million is just under 6 percent of the general US population.

Reimagining the NCAA's Power 5 Conferences - Downtown Sports Network (downtownsportsnetwork.com; Hrynyshyn)

Not too long ago, for my first article here at DownTownSportsNetwork, I revisited the NCAA’s realignment project. Today, we finish this series. When you look at the Power 5 conferences plus the American Athletic Conference, there are some glaring flaws. For one, there are definite geographical mishaps- more on that later. Also, some of the rivalries we grew up on have been destroyed by said realignment. Lastly, look at the difference in competition- the ACC finished last year with only 1 team ranked in the top 25. It’s imperative that the top conferences have a true balance of power. Let’s see how I would do this to create the “ideal conferences”. Before we get started, The Pac-12 remains unchanged so in their place, we’ll look at how the American Athletic Conference gets affected.

*new teams are in bold*

ACC (14 Teams): (out Boston College, Louisville, Georgia Tech)

Clemson, South Carolina, North Carolina, NC State, Miami, Wake Forest, Duke, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Pitt, Maryland, Florida St., Syracuse, UCF

Now, yes, I made it clear that Pitt in the ACC makes zero sense geographically, but they’ve had a decent amount of success and it didn’t make sense to take them away to shoehorn them in yet another conference. The ACC welcomes back Maryland from their nightmare they experienced in the Big 10. South Carolina joins in a trade (details to come later) with the SEC. The Gamecocks had no natural rivals in the SEC, whereas in the ACC they have the in-state heat with Clemson as well as 4 teams from bordering North Carolina, the recruiting battles would be interesting to watch, and the football team would have a much better chance of being competitive. Lastly, UCF joins the ACC because after 3 years of being at the top of the AAC they need to join a higher level of competition- especially if they still want to play the “true national champions” card.

As for the three teams that leave, two of them leave for a bigger conference, and Boston College leaves because 1) BC haven’t had much success in the ACC in the last decade plus and 2) someone needed to get the boot.

AAC (12 Teams)

Rutgers, UConn, Appalachian St., Tulsa, ECU, USF, Temple, SMU, Tulane, Navy, Boston College, Florida Atlantic

The AAC makes no sense in its current form, and in geographic terms, this probably doesn’t help, but if they’re going to get raided of teams as they are in this situation, they’re going to need to bring in 4 new teams from wherever they can get them. Rutgers was a total failure in the Big 10. Boston College was stuck in the ACC’s “no man’s land”. FAU and App St join because they’ve dominated their respective conferences the past several years and would be in for a good boost to the program funds. This doesn’t help the AAC get closer to the Power 5 in terms of competitiveness but sometimes, life isn’t fair.

Amazon’s $350M center in Clay could bring big economic spinoff to Syracuse area (PS; Moriarty)

The economic benefits that a $350 million Amazon fulfillment center in Clay will bring to the Syracuse area will go well beyond the 1,000 jobs the gigantic facility will create, local officials say.

Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon made it official Monday, announcing what news accounts had already suggested: Amazon will be the tenant for a 3.8-million-square-foot distribution center under construction off Morgan Road just north of the village of Liverpool.

“The biggest secret in all of Central New York is no longer a secret,” McMahon said with a smile during a news conference.

Calling it a “once-in-a-generation project,” McMahon said the 1,000 jobs the center will provide can be a pathway out of poverty for many in the community.

“With this 1,000 jobs, $40 million of new payroll a year, $400 million of new payroll over 10 years, when you look at all the other spinoff jobs from this project, it will be really remarkable,” he said.

When it opens in September 2021, the facility will contain the latest in merchandise-moving technology, with 10 miles of conveyor belts and hundreds of robots working alongside people.

Guys, I'm very disappointed in you today... it's Dinosaur Day, and not a single article about UNC head coach Mack Brown?
I usually post a picture of Steve Addazio for Dino Day. Not because he is that old but because of the style of play he embraces.

However, he is now a MWC problem. Or whatever conference Colorado State is in...

Come to think of it, I believe there are a ton of dinosaur fossils near Colorado. His move there might have been destined since the Mesozoic Era.

Did you know scientists found dinosaur species that were bisexual...

The Megasoreass...

And the Lickalotofpuss.
