Welcome to World Bee Day!

congrats rrlbees!

In 2014, the Slovenian Beekeepers' Association came up with the idea for World Bee Day. A resolution for the day was proposed to the United Nations by Mag. Dejan Židan, Project Manager of the World Bee Day Project and Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia. On December 20, 2017, the UN General Assembly adopted the resolution. All UN countries adopted it unanimously, and 115 countries signed on as co-sponsors. The day was designated "to raise awareness of the importance of pollinators, the threats they face and their contribution to sustainable development." Put another way, according to the UN, the day's objectives are to bring to the attention of those in power that protecting bees is important, to remind us that we rely on bees and other pollinators, to protect bees and other pollinators in order to help solve problems related to the global food supply and the elimination of hunger and to stop the further loss of biodiversity and degradation of ecosystems.

Slovenia has more beekeepers per capita than any other country, with about one out of every 200 citizens there being a beekeeper. The country suggested that World Bee Day take place in May because bees in the Northern Hemisphere are most active at this time and start reproducing then. It is also at this time that pollination is most needed in the hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere, it is a time when bee products are harvested. Besides honey, these products include the likes of pollen, royal jelly, beeswax, and propolis. The 20th of the month was chosen as the date of the observation because it is the birthday of Anton Janša (1734-1773). A pioneer of modern beekeeping techniques, Janša worked in Slovenia and was one of the most important experts of the eighteenth century in his field. He was the first to teach the modern techniques, doing so at the Beekeeping School in Vienna.

Best 2021 NFL Draft Prospects: Safeties (thegamehaus.com; DiTullio)

The 2020 NFL Draft is over and teams are getting comfortable with their new draft picks. The next class of players is getting prepared now for another year of college football. Each position will be analyzed in the coming days. Here are the best 2021 NFL Draft prospects: safeties.

Note: Players will not be ranked in the article. This is best used as a watch list for the 2020 season.

Andre Cisco, Syracuse Orange

Cisco is a ball-hawking safety who has been one of the best players in the ACC over the last couple of seasons. He is 6-foot and 203 pounds, which is solid for the NFL. The 2020 season could be huge for Cisco to show that he is for real as a prospect.

His freshman year, Cisco had seven interceptions and nine passes defended, as Syracuse won 10 games. He had five interceptions and five passes defended in nine games played for the 2019 season. The Orange won just five games. Cisco’s ball skills will be on display this season and it could prove that he is worth an early-round pick in the draft.

Richard LeCounte, Georgia Bulldogs

LeCounte could have left for the NFL, but decided to go back to Georgia for one more year. He is 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds, which is good enough for the pros. His leadership will be needed on Georgia’s defense and he can benefit from the extra year in college.

He was a reserve with 15 tackles in 2017 before really developing his game. In 2018, LeCounte had 74 total tackles, one interception and three passes defended. Georgia won 11 games that season. LeCounte’s 61 total tackles, four interceptions and three passes defended helped Georgia win 12 games including the Sugar Bowl in 2019. LeCounte can prove to be a second-day prospect with a good season in 2020.

Syracuse safety Andre Cisco poised for college football stardom | PFN profootballnetwork.com; DiCecco)

The 2020 college football season will hopefully be upon us before we know it. As amazing as it may sound, the 2021 crop of talent expected to enter the draft offers perhaps even more upside than the previous class in terms of intriguing playmakers. Let’s look at the safety position, for example. While many are already familiar with household names such as Florida State’s Hamsah Nasirildeen, Texas’ Caden Sterns, and Oregon’s Jevon Holland, it’s time to start mentioning Syracuse safety Andre Cisco in that same vein. The Orange defender is an ascending prospect who figures to see his draft stock soar in the coming months.

Freshman standout

In 2018, a highly coveted safety from the prestigious IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida named Andre Cisco arrived at Syracuse University with high expectations. The ball-hawking six-foot, 206-pound safety ascended up the depth chart during fall camp and went on to play in all 13 games (11 starts). The Valley Stream (N.Y.) native racked up 60 tackles, 18 passes defended, seven interceptions, and a forced fumble as a freshman.

Cisco’s season highlights included a pair of interceptions in an early-season affair against Wagner, an eight-tackle effort against Clemson, and a nine-tackle performance against North Carolina — which happened to include the first forced fumble of his career. He ended his breakout campaign with another nine-tackle showing in the Camping World Bowl against West Virginia.

Syracuse Football: 3 signees who will have an instant impact in 2020 (saturdayblitz.com; Smith)

Syracuse football is looking to bounce back from a disappointing 5-7 season and will look to a talented incoming class to work back to their 2018 form.

After a breakout 10-win season in 2018, Syracuse struggled through the 2019 season, ending the season 5-7 and missing out on a bowl game.

Still, optimism is high around the Syracuse program. New defensive coordinator Tony White should help improve a defense that gave up a ton of points, while Dino Babers has added new weapons to a potentially prolific offense.

3 JAMES WILLIAMS K/P Freshman

James Williams, a top-10 kicker and three-star recruit from Athens, Ga., is tasked with replacing Sterling Hofricther, a sixth-round pick in this year’s NFL draft.

Williams will be slated behind star kicker Andre Szymt for the time being but has the inside track on the punter job. Syracuse is looking to continue their recent run on special teams talent. Before Hofricther, former punter Riley Dixon made the leap from central New York to the NFL after being drafted in the seventh round in 2016. Dixon has been a starting punter in the league since entering.

The incoming freshman will be competing with current punters Nolan Cooney and Noah Nwosu, neither of whom have ever attempted a collegiate punt. Cooney has served as the placeholder during the past two seasons and kicked off four times last season.

Syracuse Football: Josh Moore picks Stanford; Orange change direction (itlh; Lee)

Three-star safety Josh Moore commits to Stanford over Syracuse football. SU misses out on one target but has not stopped looking to bolster its secondary.

On May 12, three-star safety Josh Moore out of Atlanta listed his top six schools when it comes to his recruitment, and Syracuse football made the cut. A few days later on May 16, Moore then hinted to making his announcement on May 19. Well, May 19 has come and unfortunately for the Orange, Moore is taking his talents elsewhere.

Moore announced Tuesday that he has committed to the Stanford Cardinal in its 2021 recruiting class. A top-50 recruit in Georgia proves how talented Moore is, as the Peach State is a hotbed of high school talent. That includes Moore’s teammate at the Marist School, 2021 defensive end/linebacker Derek McDonald, who committed to the Orange on May 5.

While McDonald’s commitment gave Syracuse some added hope once the Orange was listed in Moore’s final six, Syracuse was always seen as a long shot. Moore confirmed that to after his commitment.

“It was a final three for me, and of course I thought about Notre Dame and Northwestern hard for sometime,” Moore said to .

The 25 best Syracuse sports seasons of all time (16-20) - The Juice Online (the juice; McGlynn)

On Monday, we ranked the top 25 through 21 best seasons in Syracuse athletics history. Today, we continue our countdown with seasons 20 through 16.

Make sure to check back in on Friday as we reveal spots 11 through 15!

20. 2012 women’s lacrosse
The closest Syracuse women’s lacrosse has ever come to winning a national championship in terms of score margin, the 2012 season is one to remember. They won a regular season game at archrival Maryland and won the Big East regular season title with a perfect record in the conference. ‘Cuse lost in the national championship game by two goals to Northwestern. It turned out to be the end of a dynasty in the sport where the Wildcats won seven national championships in eight years.

19. 1956 football
This was the birth of a legend. No. 44 holds a very special place in Syracuse football history, and it was started by Jim Brown in 1956. While he had been around for a few years by this point and everyone knew his name, that season was when Brown etched his name into the history of the sport. He was a unanimous All-American scoring 14 total touchdowns and amassing over 1,000 yards from scrimmage in just eight games. He should have won the Heisman. ‘Cuse narrowly lost the Cotton Bowl that year to TCU and would finish the season ranked 8th in the AP Poll.

18. 1995 men’s lacrosse
As it would turn out, this would be Roy Simmons Jr.’s final championship team as the coach of the Orange. It was a clash of titans as Syracuse met Maryland in the title game. Both teams were loaded with talent as evidenced by the fact that every other school was locked out of the All-Tournament team. The added bonus was that ‘Cuse won the national championship on Maryland’s home field. It was also the start of the Powell-brother era at Syracuse as Casey rocked the famed No. 22 en route to a spot on that All-Tournament team.

17. 2015 men’s cross country
After a 64-year wait, Syracuse finally conquered the men’s cross country world again with a national championship. ‘Cuse was led by wonderkid Justyn Knight, who would go on to win the individual NCAA title in 2017. Colin Bennie and Martin Hehir also placed in the top 10 as the Orange took down two-time defending national champion Colorado. The Buffaloes entered the race as the top team in the country, making Syracuse’s narrow victory even more sweet.

Delayed or not, college football will be back, but prepare for a new normal (fltimes.com; Sherrington)

League officials have been in constant contact with the White House coronavirus task force. Bowlsby has spent as much time talking to doctors and scientists as athletic officials. Big 12 football players will be tested every other day. Quarantined, practically. Lesser non-conference opponents will be ruthlessly scrutinized to make sure their standards are up to the imperious Power Five's.

Since the world shut down two months ago, not a day has passed that the Big 12 and its cohorts haven't meticulously made plans for the return of football. The round-the-clock effort won't go for naught, either. Not that it was an overriding factor. Football will be back, folks, if for no other reason than the money says so.

Just the same, you should be prepared for what you're about to witness in a few months.

"Even doing all that," Bowlsby told Fox's Joel Klatt after summing up precautions, "we're gonna have a Tuesday afternoon where somebody tests positive in a locker room, and we're gonna have to quarantine. And the game on Saturday is gonna be delayed or it's gonna be postponed or canceled.

ACC Panic Room: Notre Dame in a football conundrum this season? (wralsportsfan.com; video; Brownlow & Ovies)

Lauren Brownlow and Joe Ovies understand college football conferences might play conference only games during the COVID-19 pandemic, but what if you're Notre Dame and you have no conference to play in?

Wake Defensive Front One of the Best in ACC Under Cohen - Wake Forest University Athletics (godeacs.com)

Assistant head coach of defense/defensive line coach Dave Cohen was a key addition to Dave Clawson's initial staff in 2014. Since then, Wake Forest has turned into one of the toughest defensive lines to stop in the ACC while regularly sending players into the pros.

Over the last four seasons, the Deacons have racked up 125 sacks, the most sacks of any four-year period in school history. This season with 10 defensive linemen in year three or more in college, the Deacs are primed to potentially have their best season yet up front.

Wake is led by one of the best edge rushers in program history. With the help of the Cohen, Boogie Basham totaled 11 sacks, the second most in school history. It helped him become the first defensive end to earn first team All-ACC honors since Calvin Pace (Cardinals/Jets) in 2002.

He enters his senior campaign sixth in program history with 15.5 sacks while also having 31 career tackles for loss.

Cohen also helped groom Texans' 2018 draft pick Duke Ejiofor into one of the top pass rushers in Wake history. Before graduating for Wake Forest, Ejiofor climbed to third on the Deacs all-time sack list, finishing with 23.5 sacks in his career.

Each season since he has arrived on campus at least one defensive lineman has earned All-ACC honors.

At each of the schools Cohen has been, he has helped tutor some of the nation's best. He has produced at least two pros at each level of the defense.

'Guarantee games' could take a hit as college football revisits scheduling (star-trubine.com; AP; Russo)

In 2018, with his school facing the possibility of cutting staff to make up a huge shortfall in state funding, Northern Illinois athletic director Sean Frazier added a football game at Florida State to the Huskies' schedule.

The road trip came with a $1.6 million payout to NIU.

“Florida State, essentially, saved people’s jobs,” Frazier said.

Guarantee games, or buy games, are essential to many athletic departments that field Division I football teams but have far smaller budgets than those at Power Five schools. Even before the pandemic spawned a financial crisis, most Group of Five schools were using university funds and student fees to help pay for athletics.

This season, 39 major college football schools have scheduled a total of 49 buy games worth an estimated $65 million. If coronavirus disruptions cause Power Five teams to play more or only conference games, it could leave huge holes in the athletic budgets of schools already stretched thin.

The largest payout for a one-game deal with no return this season reportedly is $1.9 million by Auburn to Massachusetts. UMass has a $10 million budget for football. The Auburn game scheduled for Nov. 14 offsets much of the expenses for the rest of the Minutemen's schedule, athletic director Ryan Bamford said.

CNY Regional Market making changes after crowded weekend (PS; House)

Crowds haven’t been a problem at the Central New York Regional Market since the coronavirus pandemic shut down much of the state.

That changed last weekend on a near-perfect spring day.

Shoppers came to the regional market in droves on Saturday, filling the Syracuse market’s sheds as they picked up plants and produce. The crowds made it impossible for people to stay 6 feet apart. Not everyone wore masks.

So this weekend, the market plans to make some changes.

Onondaga County Health Commissioner Indu Gupta and her team went to the crowded market on Saturday, County Executive Ryan McMahon said Tuesday during his daily coronavirus briefing. They saw the market needed to work on social distancing and improve communication, he said.

The county health officials shared their observations with the state Department of Agriculture and Markets, the county’s spokesman said.
