Hall of Fame running back and New Haven legend Floyd Little battling cancer as his friends and fans raise money in support (courant.com; Amore)
Last December, Floyd Little returned to New Haven, as he often has, to present the scholarship that bears his name.
As he handed off to Josiah Artis of Hillhouse High, Little spoke to the young football players, telling his story for those too young to remember.
“You could hear a pin drop when he spoke,” said Bill Santillo, president of the New Haven Gridiron Club, who is not too young to remember Little barreling with the ball for Hillhouse in the early 1960s
“Basically, he talked about what you’ve got to do to be a champion,” Santillo said. “You’ve got to overcome obstacles. You’ve got to hang with the right people. You can’t let outside influences influence you. You’ve got to focus on it. Everybody was listening and when he got done, everybody gave him a standing ovation.”
Even for others old enough to know the significance of the man, who perhaps had heard the stories, it still hit home, fresh and forceful and relevant, that evening. Little’s rise from New Haven to Syracuse, where he wore the cherished No. 44 bequeathed by Ernie Davis, to the Denver Broncos and finally to the Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, remains an inspiration to all who hear it.
This spring, Little is fighting hard once again, fighting hard to beat cancer and extend a remarkable life.

ACC/SEC/BigXII football alliance? (RX; HM)
ACC/SEC/BigXII football alliance?
Last week the Big Ten and Pac-12 both cancelled non-conference football for 2020. The ACC, SEC and Big XII decided not to follow suite - at least, not yet. Might these three conferences be planning an alliance to allow a few non-conference games to be played? I certainly think they are considering it!
If these leagues - and let's toss Notre Dame into that mix as well - if they want to play, oh, let's say nine conference games plus one non-conference game, how might that work out? The simplest solution could be something like this:
...4 ACC teams play SEC rivals, while the other 10 ACC teams play Notre Dame.
Each ACC team would also play a 9th ACC game to get 10 total games.
With 4 SEC teams playing ACC teams out of conference, that leaves 10 teams to play the 10 teams of the Big XII. The Big XII already play 9 conference games, and in this scenario so would the SEC.
That gets all ACC, SEC and Big XII teams up to 10 total games each.
Time to Sell Notre Dame Fans on the ACC! (RX; HM)
Time to Sell Notre Dame Fans on the ACC!
I read it every day: Notre Dame needs to join the ACC for football or else! These fans apparently think the conference would be better off without the scheduling agreement, I guess? More likely, they don't think the Irish will ever want to join ACC football, so they feel the only solution is to find a way to compel them to do so... but that way of thinking is simply wrong!
From SI.com:
So the point is, Notre Dame has a track record of loyalty to those who help them out. The author then suggests what to do with that information:The ACC Has A Golden Opportunity To Entice Notre Dame
...During World War II, the Naval Academy stepped up and helped Notre Dame to survive as an institution, and Notre Dame has repaid that with over 70 years of loyalty by playing the Midshipmen every single season. For much of the last four decades playing Navy has done absolutely nothing for Notre Dame, but that hasn’t stopped the Irish program from remaining loyal to an institution that stepped up to the plate in their time of need.

Kenny Pickett praised as future pro by ex-NFL scout (cardiachill.com; Wilson)
Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett has carved out a role for himself as the leader of a Panthers offense that has generally underwhelmed over the last three seasons. However, his play has been impressive at times, and in 2019, he posted his best season to date, becoming the fifth Pitt signal-caller to throw for 3,000 yards in a season and ending the program’s streak of bowl losses that began in 2014.
While Pitt and its players are sometimes overlooked by the national media, the New Jersey native’s achievements have not gone unnoticed by NFL scouts and decision-makers. In fact, Jim Nagy, a former NFL scout and the current executive director of the Senior Bowl, singled out Pickett on Friday evening and predicted he will make it to the NFL.
“One sleeper QB that will gain traction after NFL scouts dig into tape is Pitt’s Kenny Pickett,” Nagy said in a message on Twitter. “Tough and instinctive guy that plays the QB position well. [The Senior Bowl] has been fan of Pickett since seeing him at Manning Camp last year. He’ll play on Sundays.”One sleeper QB that will gain traction after NFL scouts dig into tape is Pitt’s Kenny Pickett. Miami football would love to play Notre Dame in 2020 | FR24 News English (fr24news.com)
Sports director Blake James said on Saturday that the Miami football program would be interested in adding Notre Dame to its 2020 calendar.
With college football schedules constantly changing for the 2020 season, the Miami football program would be delighted to play Notre Dame according to sporting director Blake James in an email to the Miami Herald on Saturday. Miami and Notre Dame last played in 2017 and are scheduled to replay in 2024.
The Big 10 announced Thursday and the Pac 12 followed Friday with announcements that it would exclusively play a conference schedule in 2020. The two conferences are playing nine of the eight conference games played by the ACC. Numerous reports indicate that the ACC should eliminate non-conference gaming.
Outgoing CCA commissioner John Swafford said earlier this week that the CCA would work with Notre Dame to help the Fighting Irish fill their calendar with the game they lost when the Big 10 and Pac 12 decided to only play conference games in 2020. Notre Dame was scheduled to play in Wisconsin, USC and Stanford in 2020.
Miami would probably be one of the first teams to fill the Notre Dame calendar. The Hurricanes lost the state of Michigan out of their calendar. With the two programs having to fill their schedules and Miami and Notre Dame being one of the most historic rivalries in college football, it’s a perfect match.

ACC Revenues Down $9 Million for 2018-19 (pittsburghsportsnow.com; Saunders)
The Atlantic Coast Conference’s revenue fell $9.3 million for the 2018-19 school year, according to recent tax filings.
The conference revenues fell from $464.76 million to $455.4 million, a decline of 2%. Each team received an average payout of $28.8 million, the lowest payout of the Power Five league, according to the USA Today.
According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the disparity was due to the league sending only one team to a New Year’s Six bowl game in January 2019.
The school’s lone representative in the 2019 College Football Playoff came through, with Clemson defeating No. 1 Alabama, 44-16. The ACC followed up that title with Virginia’s 2019 men’s basketball championship.

Notre Dame Doesn't Need The ACC As Much As The ACC Needs Notre Dame (SI; Palmeri)
As the news of college football sticking to a conference-only schedule broke, it left Notre Dame with more questions than answers. College football fans and media alike were taking a victory lap and the barrage of "Join a conference" tweets came from every direction.
Unfortunately for them, Notre Dame won't be pressured to commit to anything long term.
The ACC Needs Notre Dame
While so many believe this will force Notre Dame into the ACC, you have to look at who needs who. The ACC has been hanging onto Clemson's coattails the last few seasons as the conference has underperformed. They were tied with the Pac-12 for last among power five schools in revenue for 2019.
The ACC and the Pac-12 brought in $29.5 million to each school. (Notre Dame received $7.9 million as a partial member. The other three conferences pulled in:
- Big Ten: $54 million per school
- SEC: $43.1 million per school
- Big 12: $33.6 million per school
A hyped game between Wake Forest and Clemson drew 1.91 million viewers. The ACC also had the least-watched ACC championship with 3.97 million viewers.

3-star LB Isi Etute commits to Virginia Tech over NC State, ECU - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)
Over the weekend, Virginia Tech scooped up a commitment from 3-star in-state inside linebacker Isi Etute. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound Etute hail from Virginia Beach, which is familiar recruiting territory for the Hokies.
247 Sports ranks Etute as the No. 45 inside linebacker in the 2021 class and a top 50 prospect in the state of Virginia.
Cox 2021 OLB/S Isi Etute (@isietute) has committed to play his College Football for the Virginia Tech #Hokies in the #ACC.
Etute racked up 74 tackles, 4 intercepts and 2 TD's on defense a year ago during a breakout junior campaign for the Falcons.

Etute picked Virginia Tech over a host of other programs, including ACC rival NC State and East Carolina. Virginia and Wake Forest also made offers.

FSU's Expected Win Percentage Would Rise with ACC-Only Slate (SI; Visser)
Will the ACC go with a conference-only schedule for the 2020 football season? Time will tell, as Conference Commissioner John Swofford has announced that he and the powers that be in Charlotte are aiming at making a decision in late July.
But after the Big Ten and Pac-12 decided to go in that direction, it seems like the odds-on favorite as to what happens. There's a chance that the Seminoles could hold on to their traditional season-finale against Florida, but what would losing all four of their non-conference games mean for the 'Noles?
A better winning percentage on the season, likely. Because FSU is currently facing the second toughest non-con schedule in the ACC:
- West Virginia (Atlanta, GA)
- Samford (Tallahassee, FL)
- Boise State (Boise, ID)
- Florida (Tallahassee, FL)

Clemson Football: Predicting what a 2020 conference-only schedule could look like (rubbingtherock.com; Spencer)
The 2020 Clemson football schedule seems it will be changed almost inevitably
The 2020 Clemson football schedule is going to be turned on its head at some point or another, in all likelihood.
With the Big Ten’s announcement that it will only play conference games during the 2020 fall season, there is growing speculation that the rest of the Power-5 conferences will do something of the same, even if it looks a little differently.
That being said, there is nothing official currently on what the Clemson football schedule will look like, so here’s our best prediction.
Predicting a 2020 Clemson football conference-only schedule
Thinking through what the ACC could do- and its already widely-announced stance that it would include Notre Dame– we can get a fairly simply idea of what the conference could do.

FSU football: How one ACC scheduling model makes zero sense (chopchat.com; Hunt)
He is talking about the 'Giglo Model'...
FSU football is hoping there will be a college football season in 2020. ACC officials are floating one scheduling model that makes zero sense.
FSU football fans want to see their Noles in action this fall. It’s a pivotal moment for the program on many fronts.
It’s the beginning of a new era under Mike Norvell, and they need to show a better product on the field to give recruiting the boost it needs.
A fall without college football would be devastating to the Noles and all of its athletic teams. Some staff have already been laid off or asked to take pay cuts.
It’s a tough situation, no doubt, and of course, there are COVID-19 risks with teams playing actual games. There have been several teams that have had to pause their workouts due to clusters of players testing positive. Luckily, FSU football has been able to avoid that as they continue to work as if a season will take place.
The ACC announced they would be delaying their decision a week or so in terms of if they will follow suit and play conference-only games like the BIG 10. However, one scheduling model is being discussed per the tweet below:
One scheduling model on the table for the ACC:
Ten games but not 10 individual games, rather a home-and-home between five teams.
Notre Dame would be included and count in the ACC standings

Syracuse activist’s call for cops to live in cities they police goes viral (PS; Weaver)
Yusuf Abdul-Qadir’s calls for more Syracuse police officers to live inside the city they patrol has been seen by millions of viewers in recent days.
The 2:20 clip comes from a four-hour meeting at Syracuse’s city hall July 2, when a group of about 20 people hammered Mayor Ben Walsh about police policies, spending and officer accountability.
In the clip, Abdul-Qadir asked Walsh how many city officers live inside the city’s limits. Police Chief Kenton Buckner can be heard off-camera saying about 5%.
That means nearly every Syracuse police officer spends money on rent or property taxes outside of the city, Abdul-Qadir argues.
“That means they take their money, on (Interstate) 81, go to outside the city, pay taxes in those communities that have some of the best schools, where we have an underfunded (Syracuse) school district,” Abdul-Qadir said in the clip.
