National-Tapioca-Pudding-Day-July-15.jpg

Welcome to National Tapioca Pudding Day!

Tapioca is a starch derived from the cassava root. While the root looks similar in shape and color to a sweet potato, in its natural form, cassava contains cyanide. However, grinding down the root produces a flour or powder used as a thickening agent. It may also be produced tapioca into pearls. Also known as manioc or yucca, growers cultivate cassava around the world. A part of the Euphorbiaceae (spurge) family, this woody shrub is native to South America but is also grown in Asia and Africa.

Once a staple in early American households, tapioca was dehydrated to survive long sea voyages without spoilage. In a dehydrated form, tapioca earns an extended shelf life. Cooks wanting to make homemade tapioca should plan ahead. Tapioca pearls must soak overnight before using them.

Will Syracuse’s Offensive Line Improve this Season? – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Bonaparte)

Last season Syracuse football was underwhelming. Just 5 wins after a 10-win, bowl winning season was a bad look for the Orange. The main problem with the team? The offensive line. In 2019, SU ranked 127th out of 130 teams in sacks allowed with 50, only edging out Miami, Akron, and Old Dominion. Tommy DeVito Was the most sacked quarterback in college football at 44. The starting right tackle quit in the middle of the season. It’s safe to say last year was a horror movie for the SU offensive line. Let’s take a look at what it will look like come the Fall.

Who’s Gone:

Sam Heckel: Heckel was only healthy for the opener against Liberty, he sat out the rest of the season with an injury to the upper body. He announced earlier this year that he was retiring from football. The Wisconsin native was a crucial part of the Camping World Bowl victory, as he started 14 games for the Orange in two years. His absence was a huge reason the offensive line struggled last year.

Evan Adams: Adams was incredibly reliable for the Orange. After redshirting his freshman season, the Scott Schafer recruit started 45 out of 49 games in his time with SU. He signed with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent.

Anderjas Duerig: It’s not surprising if this name doesn’t ring a bell, a backup for most of his career with SU, Duerig slotted in every now and again at guard and center. He missed a few games in 2019 due to injury and played most often on special teams.

Projected Starters:

Left Tackle: Airon Servais played the majority of the season filling in for the injured Heckel at center. Servais was quite easily the most talented player on the line, and it only makes sense to put the most talented player in the most valuable position. When Syracuse finally did that in the final games of the season, wins started to come. Tommy DeVito learned what it felt like to have time to throw the ball, this offense started to gel nicely. Too bad it too Ryan Alexander leaving and a Matthew Bergeron promotion for them to finally figure it out. Going into his senior year, Servais has the potential to be named All-ACC.

Left Guard: Patrick Davis has been a backup for the Orange his entire career. He’s logged 24 games at SU with 9 pancakes for his highlight reel. This season his name found the top of the spring depth chart.

Center: Carlos Vettorello has been the wild card of the SU offensive line. He superseded Ryan Alexander early in the year at left tackle where he started eight times. Then after Alexander left the team he shifted into the center role, allowing Servais to slide back out to the left edge. Vetterello has a ton of upside and should prove useful for SU.

Right Guard: Dakota Davis started all 12 games at right guard last season, and it won’t likely change unless Florida transfer Chris Bleich beats him out for the spot.

Right Tackle: Matthew Bergeron was the poor freshman shoved into the limelight after Alexander relieved himself of his duties. Bergeron proved to be solid and showed potential of some serious talent. In the five games he started he flipped 20 pancakes.

Loyalty, Mentorship why former 'Cuse Coach could be heading to Florida (cnycentral.com; Tamurian)

When news broke on Monday night the initial reaction from fans might have been, well, why?

SU alum and renowned reporter Pete Thamel told the masses that Paul Pasqualoni was going back to college football.

Pasqualoni, 70, stepped away from his role as defensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions the last two seasons after a 2020 campaign that saw Detroit finish 3-12-1.

Many figured that meant his retirement from the game.

Apparently, that's not the case.

So why Florida?

Gators Head coach Dan Mullen was actually a graduate assistant coach under Coach P while at Syracuse in the late 1990's.

A staff mind you that included LSU's Ed Orgeron, Colorado State's Steve Addazio and more household names in the college game.

When will NCAA rule on Chris Bleich's waiver? (247sports.com; McAllister)

Syracuse football picked up one of the top transfers in college football this offseason in offensive lineman Chris Bleich. Bleich started several games for the nationally ranked Florida Gators before electing to continue his collegiate career elsewhere. Ultimately, he picked Syracuse as his transfer destination. What is still up in the air is whether or not Bleich will be eligible to play during the 2020 season.

Putting aside the pandemic and that whether or not games are played is still very much up in the air, NCAA rules require players sit out one year when transferring (except for graduate transfers) unless a waiver is filed and approved. The NCAA is in charge of those approvals, and that may be the problem. Bleich is still waiting to hear the status of his waiver claim, and given some recent events, that seems quite odd.

According to Bleich's twitter page, he filed his waiver on April 13th of this year. More than three months later, the NCAA has still yet to make a decision. The question is, why? Especially when you look at some other transfer cases across the country both this year and in previous years.

Take quarterback JT Daniels for example. Daniels, a former five star quarterback prospect who signed with USC out of high school, entered the transfer portal on April 16th. That is three days AFTER Bleich filed his waiver. Why did Daniels enter the portal? After starting 11 games as a true freshman, he was hurt in the season opener last season. Taking over for him was Kedon Slovis, who became a breakout start throwing for over 3,500 yards with 30 touchdowns while completing 71.9% of his passes.

So Daniels decided to look for other opportunities with Slovis as the likely starter going forward. After entering the portal on April 16th, he committed to Georgia on May 28th. Just over six weeks later, the NCAA rules Daniels' eligible for the upcoming season. Was this due to Georgia's status as a major college football brand and an extremely profitable program for the NCAA? We do not know for sure, but there will be those who make that assumption. It is hard to argue there is not favoritism when a player like Bleich continues to wait while Daniels had his eligibility ruled on so quickly.

Football: Brett Cotter, staff seek sustained success at Albertus Magnus (lohud; Thomson)

While most newly-hired football coaches are eager — and still waiting — to meet athletes in person, Brett Cotter has had a major advantage.

The 46-year old joined Albertus Magnus as an assistant last year and was thrust into an interim role when Paul Villanueva resigned this winter. That meant Cotter ran the weight room, then became the face behind every Zoom call and virtual workout during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The school removed the interim title earlier this summer. Now, Cotter has a new coaching staff and both short and long-term plans he hope can build lasting, sustained success with the Falcons.

"This can be a great growth story for the school and the program and each kid who is going to be involved," he said. "It's a chance to wipe the slate clean and start over in a really exciting way."

Searching for strong leaders with football acumen who could connect and motivate young players, Cotter hired Kelvin Smith, Kesnal Menard and Kevin Adams as his assistants. Smith, who has been a youth coach and trainer for two decades in Rockland County, is the father of former North Rockland, Syracuse and NFL linebacker Kelvin Smith. Menard and Adams are Rockland residents who played at St. Joe's Regional before playing Division I football at Marist and Pitt, respectively.

4-Star CB Jordan Hancock Reportedly Decommits From Clemson Football (thespun.com; Arend)

Clemson football doesn’t lose too many commits on the recruiting front. But Dabo Swinney reportedly lost one his team’s top-rated commits in the 2021 cycle on Tuesday evening.

Clemson 247Sports reporter Anna Hickey reports four-star recruit Jordan Hancock has decommited from the program. The 6-foot-1, 170-pound cornerback had been committed to the Tigers since early March.

Dabo Swinney and the Tigers pride themselves on keeping recruits from decommitting. But this is Clemson football’s second decommitment in the 2021 cycle. Five-star defensive lineman Korey Foreman decommitted from Clemson in April of this year.

Plenty of schools will come calling Jordan Hancock in coming days and weeks. But there’s smoke brewing that the talented four-star cornerback will land at Ohio State.

Notre Dame’s Schedule and the ACC (247sports.com; O'Malley)

Navy in Annapolis.

Athletic Coast Conference schools Wake Forest, Pittsburgh, and Georgia Tech on the road; Duke, Clemson, and Louisville in South Bend.

Arkansas and Western Michigan pending conference (and Notre Dame’s) decisions.

That’s what we know of Notre Dame’s 2020 schedule, but what we know is subject to change by the end of this month, if not this week, if not today.

And so it goes with sports in 2020…

Logically, Notre Dame will attempt to replace canceled games against Wisconsin (Oct. 3) Stanford (Oct. 10)—plus an October 17 bye—and USC (Nov. 28) with a pair or trio of eight remaining ACC programs.

Though conference’s entire schedule is likely to be reworked if the ACC (and others) officially follow suit with The Big 10 and Pac-12 in a Conference-Only format this fall, it is today relevant to take a look at the open dates—i.e., potential scheduling opportunities—between Notre Dame and each opponent not yet on the Irish slate.

Irish Illustrated considers both the draw (in parenthesis) and likelihood of each matchup assuming schedules aren’t completely reconfigured.

MIAMI (#1)

In a July 11 report by Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, Miami athletic director Blake James offered this note via email of a potential matchup with Notre Dame:

“We will work with the ACC on creating the best schedules possible for our programs. If the opportunity for a match up with ND is presented, we would be thrilled to have that game added to our 2020 schedule.”

Considering Covid-19’s impact relative to Florida vs. Indiana, it would logically be played in South Bend. The teams are set to play in both 2024 (South Bend) and 2025 (Miami).

The Draw: It was once the most-heated rivalry in the history of the sport…for just over four seasons, that is. Nothing gets either fan base’s blood boiling like the sight of these two helmets on opposite sidelines in the fall.

The Last Time: No. 7 Miami ambushed No. 3 Notre Dame in mid-November 2017, 41-8, ruining the latter’s College Football Playoff spot that appeared set in stone.

Dates of Interest: Sept. 26 (Michigan State game cancellation). Temple (Sept. 5), Wagner (Sept. 12), and UAB (Sept. 17, a Thursday) represent the Hurricanes non-conference foes. October 17 is a scheduled bye week.

SYRACUSE (N/A, but it seems likely, logistically)

The teams don’t meet again until 2022 (date TBD), that after playing in 2014, 2016, and 2018.

If already-scheduled games hold true, Syracuse and Notre Dame share open Saturdays on both Oct. 10 and Oct. 17, with Syracuse’s cancelled contest on Sept. 19 a potential window for Notre Dame as well should Western Michigan and the MAC choose the Conference-Only route.

The Draw: Strictly logistics, as the open dates between the Irish and Orange fit well as indicated below.

Briggs & Stratton moving production of lawn mowers, other products from Wisconsin to Central NY (PS; Moriarty)

Briggs & Stratton Corp. is moving production of its lawn tractor, residential zero-turn lawn mower, snow thrower and pressure washer products from Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, to its new factory in the Oneida County city of Sherrill.

The company, headquartered in Wauwatosa, will move production at the end of August, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. Production of standby generators and engine components will remain in Wauwatosa, according to the report.

Briggs & Stratton is the world’s largest producer of gasoline engines for outdoor power equipment. The company opened a 552,000-square-foot factory in September 2019 in the former Oneida Ltd. silverware plant in Sherrill to produce its Ferris and Snapper Pro brand commercial mowers. The company bought Ferris Industries, a maker of mowers in the Madison County village of Munnsville, in 2004.

Briggs & Stratton said shifting production from Wauwatosa to Sherrill will allow it to streamline its manufacturing and distribution of the products.

The company did not say how many jobs the move will create in Sherrill and did not respond to a request for comment from syracuse.com. However, when it opened the Sherrill facility, the company pledged to retain 500 existing jobs and create at least 52 new ones.

Brandon Lovett, Sherrill city manager, said the company made it known when it opened the plant that it expected to expand its workforce to around 600.

“They’re a wonderful outfit, a great entity to have in town,” he said.
