Welcome to Steel Day!

Today is expected to be the day steel starts getting installed for the new roof at The Stadium in Syracuse. It is expected the hard shell section of the roof will be built first, then the PTFE section.

Syracuse Football: Let’s face it folks, a fall season likely isn’t happening (itlh; Adler)

The current state of the novel coronavirus pandemic is significantly increasing the likelihood that Syracuse football will not suit up this fall.

At this juncture, with record numbers of Covid-19 cases unfortunately occurring across the country, the writing seems on the wall that Syracuse football will not play a 2020 campaign – at least this fall.

Sure, Atlantic Coast Conference leaders have said that they will make a decision on the 2020 football season at the end of this month, and they’ve postponed their virtual pre-season media event, slated for July 21-23, for the time being.

That’s all well and good, but so many ominous indicators are surfacing which have driven me into a pessimistic viewpoint related to an upcoming term.

Interest level strong between Syracuse football and 3-star QB Henry Belin (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football continues to make 2022 quarterback Henry Belin a high-priority target, and the three-star prospect has the Orange among his top suitors.

In early July, three-star Justin Lamson gave Syracuse football its quarterback in the 2021 class, and now the Orange has its sights set on a QB in the 2022 recruiting cycle, with a focus on New York state prospect Henry Belin.

Although Belin’s recruiting process is still early on, Syracuse football did represent the initial team from a Power Five conference to offer him a scholarship, according to CuseNation.com’s Mike McAllister, and that’s an encouraging sign.

To date, the rising junior at Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx, N.Y., has received other offers from fellow Atlantic Coast Conference member Pittsburgh, Big Ten Conference participant Rutgers, Empire State crew Buffalo, Dartmouth and Massachusetts.

Expect many more offers to come in for the 6-foot-2, 190-pound Belin, who is rated as three stars by 247Sports, as well as the No. 37 pro-style quarterback nationally in the 2022 class and the No. 7 high-school player in New York state.

Belin told McAllister that he thinks he would prove a “perfect fit” for the Syracuse football fast-paced, pass-happy offense. “I think that it fits me well because it’s very similar to the offense that I play in now,” Belin said.

Safety should be first for Syracuse football - The Juice Online (the juice; Stechschulte)

August is around the corner, which would lead to thoughts of football on fall Saturdays under normal circumstances. This year, of course, there are no normal circumstances, but there are plenty of thoughts about football. They are just different ones.

The Syracuse football team is pretty fortunate as far as its exposure to the coronavirus is concerned. The state of New York is among those in America currently experiencing lower COVID rates.

However, Syracuse’s schedule is not a series on intrasquad games, so what about the opposing teams on that slate? If recent reports suggesting the ACC will be dropping non-conference games prove true, that still leaves eight conference foes from seven different states lined up to bang heads with the Orange.

There is also the possibility of additional games being added to make a schedule of more traditional length, including helping out ACC partner school Notre Dame fill their Saturdays. Even without any additions, there is enough to talk about with the eight conference games already there.

Recent heat maps showing numbers of COVID test cases in the lower 48 states show that only the SEC has higher representation than the ACC in areas with higher case rates, with both Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida all prominently featured among the areas with higher rates.

Which teams make the most sense for Florida State football in ACC-only schedule in 2020? (tallahassee.com; McGahee III)

The ACC hasn't made changes to the football schedule for the 2020 season yet.

But those changes seem inevitable as conferences around the country cancel fall sports or go to conference-only schedules like the Big Ten did last week.

The ACC released a statement that it would be making a decision on the 2020 season later this month. Some of the options on the table are a conference-only schedule or a pod schedule, which was reported as a possibility by David Teel of the Richmond Times-Dispatch,

The pod schedule would have FSU play the same four opponents twice and would likely be based geographically.

Pod play likely wouldn't be beneficial for FSU considering it would have to play Clemson twice, along with Miami, Georgia Tech, and one of the North Carolina teams. If the ACC wants to keep all four North Carolina teams together, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, or Virginia could also be possibilities.

If FSU goes to a conference-only schedule, it would only require minor tweaking. FSU already has eight ACC games scheduled for the 2020 season with home games against Clemson, Wake Forest, Pittsburgh, and Boston College. The ACC away games were Miami, North Carolina State, Louisville, and Syracuse.

The ACC could also completely revamp the schedule with opponents that are set up geographically.

So which opponents would make the most sense for FSU if the ACC completely redid the schedule?

1. Georgia Tech

The Yellow Jackets are the closest team to FSU in the conference. Despite the difference of just 277 miles, FSU and GT have played once in the regular season since the beginning of the 2010 season. The two teams did meet twice in the ACC Championship Game in 2012 and 2014 with FSU winning both.

This game should be played every year and this would be the smartest opponent to put on FSU's schedule.

https://www.si.com/college/notredame/football/notre-dame-football-acc-pod-schedule-2020 (SI; Driskell)

We don’t know if there will be college football in 2020, and we are even less certain of what the Notre Dame football schedule will look like should there be a season. What we do know is that as it stands right now, Notre Dame only has nine games on its docket after USC, Stanford and Wisconsin all came off the schedule when their conferences decided to play only league only games in 2020.

There’s a chance more leagues could make a similar decision, which would further complicate Notre Dame’s football schedule. As we’ve discussed several times in recent weeks, the odds are strong that the ACC will work with Notre Dame to ensure the Irish have a full schedule this fall.

One proposal would create quite an interesting schedule.

According to David Teel of the Richmond Times-Dispatch, one proposal being considered by the ACC is Notre Dame joining the league for just one season. At that point the league would break into three “geographic pods” of five teams.

Each team would play the four other teams in their pods twice, which would give them eight games each. Team would add two more games by having crossover games with the SEC.

Regarding teams which are grandfathered into power conferences, from CSNBBS:

Vanderbilt is the Microsoft employee who joined the company before they introduced Windows, got some Microsoft stock, and held onto it.
On those who could've been grandfathered-in, but left:
Tulane is someone who had some Microsoft stock and sold it before Windows was introduced.

So does that make Georgia Tech the company that sold its Microsoft stock before Windows and bought Netflix and then traded that in to buy Blockbuster...?
At least Bobby Dodd Stadium has a great view, though...

What Will the ACC do About 2020 Football Schedule? All Sports Discussions ventures a guess...
The bottom line is that the Peach Bowl's three Atlanta games in early September -- involving the Big 12, ACC, and SEC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium -- are extremely important to [Peach Bowl executive director Gary] Stokan...

“We hope to get back in the office Aug. 3, if we get some good news that the ACC, SEC and Big 12 are going to play conference plus-one or conference plus-two,” Stokan told reporters.

Of particular note is Stokan's backup plan in case the Georgia-Virginia game in Atlanta can't go through as scheduled. Stokan has floated the possibility of West Virginia -- from the Big 12 -- replacing Georgia of the SEC as an opponent for Virginia of the ACC.

Georgia-Virginia is currently scheduled for Labor Day night, September 7. West Virginia, currently scheduled to play Florida State in Atlanta on Sept. 5, could save that game by moving to Sept. 7 if other intervening events make Georgia-Virginia unplayable. That would obviously cause a complication for Florida State.

In other words, let's say the ACC, SEC and Big XII settle on a model which only allows for one non-conference game. For Georgia, that game would be Georgia Tech; for Florida State, that game would be Florida. That would leave both Virginia and West Virginia hanging - but also free to play each other. (UNC and Auburn don't have annual non-conference rivals, so that game should be played if any non-conference games are allowed).
__________

By the way, Alabama, whose season opener against the USC Trojans was cancelled by the Pac-12, has been rumored to be in talks with TCU, Notre Dame, and now BYU for a replacement game.

SMQ: Thinking radically about college football realignment in age of coronavirus (saturdayblitz.com; Bigalke)

Northeast Conference
  • Teams: UConn, Boston College, UMass, Rutgers, Army, Buffalo, Syracuse, Temple
  • States included: 5 (Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania)
  • Current P5 teams: 3 (Boston College, Rutgers, Syracuse)
This is the other league that could conceivably also go by the Lambert moniker. Among the schools included in the Northeast Conference realignment, five of the eight programs took home the trophy a total of 21 times. (Subtract Penn State from the Midlands and you get a similar hit rate between the rest of the schools.) While none of the Ivy League schools remain part of top-flight football any longer, the Northeast Conference footprint encompasses the spiritual birthplace of the gridiron game.

With only three Power Five teams included in this configuration, the Northeast Conference would be one of the weaker conferences in the new national realignment at first. Key to its growth is the chance to potentially dominate the Boston, New York, and Philadelphia television markets. Boston College has historic moments to draw upon, as do both Syracuse and Army. Rutgers can boast primacy as the (nominal) birthplace of the game. Temple has recent glimpses of potential.

The 400-mile span between Boston and Buffalo marks the longest journey between Northeast Conference schools. Both cities are about 275 miles from Philadelphia, the league’s southern terminus. There is a real chance to lock down the northeast for years to come in this configuration and hone a solid annual representative in a 16-team playoff.

2020 champion: Boston College

After near-record heat, storms cause damage in Upstate NY (PS; O'Toole)

After a scorching hot Sunday afternoon, damaging storms swept through parts of Upstate New York.

Sunday’s temperature hit 95 degrees in Syracuse — two degrees shy of the record set in 1946. The heat index, meanwhile, reached 99 degrees at 3:54 p.m. Sunday in Syracuse, according to the weather service.

By late afternoon, parts of Central New York south to the Pennsylvania border saw rain, winds and/or thunderstorms.

About 75 miles southwest of Syracuse, in Middlesex, Yates County, a newscaster posted a photo of two children posing next to an enormous tree uprooted by the storm.
