Welcome to National Trail Mix Day!

National Trail Mix Day is dedicated to the snack mix of sustenance, which was conceived to be taken along on hikes. It is easy to carry and usually nutritious, often containing raisins, nuts, and granola. Chocolate is often also added. It's at least been around since 1910, when it was mentioned in Horace Kephart's The Book of Camping and Woodcraft. In many European countries it is known as "student snack" or "student food", and many hikers refer to trail mix as "gorp". This may be an acronym for "good old raisins and peanuts" or "granola, oats, raisins, peanuts."

Syracuse Football: So far, ACC teams a mixed bag on attendance plans (itlh; Adler)

The Syracuse football home opener is about four weeks away, and whether fans can cheer on the Orange inside the Carrier Dome remains unclear.

Syracuse football will commence its 2020 campaign in fewer than two weeks when the Orange heads to North Carolina on Saturday, Sept. 12, and no fans will get to attend.

Two weeks after that, the ‘Cuse is slated to hold its first football contest of the fall season inside the Carrier Dome, and whether fans will get to watch in-person is still a question mark.

Amid the novel coronavirus pandemic, a 2020 term transpiring at all for Syracuse football is no guarantee, and fans in the stands, from my perspective, is pretty unlikely.

Then again, Orange administrators have yet to announce what the attendance plan is on the Hill, although they have acknowledged in the past that reduced capacity is expected.

The SU athletics department has, thankfully, banned tailgating and also moved to an individual game ticket model, assuming that fans ultimately are allowed to attend.

To date, the ‘Cuse isn’t the only Atlantic Coast Conference squad that has yet to reveal its attendance plans, however, numerous of the league’s 15 members have done so. The results are a mixed bag at this juncture, according to announcements put out by various teams.

UNC is not allowing fans through September and will revisit the possibility of in-person attendance in October. Pittsburgh is also not letting fans attend football games in September, and the Panthers host the Orange on Saturday, Sept. 19.

On Saturday, Oct. 24, Syracuse football will make a trip to Clemson, which is the pre-season No. 1 squad across the country in both major polls. Capacity at Clemson’s Memorial Stadium is getting reduced to about 19,000 fans.

The Orange goes to Louisville on Friday, Nov. 20. Louisville is anticipating capacity of 18,000 fans per game at Cardinal Stadium, although UofL officials say that figure could change.

UNC Football: Tar Heels open as favorites against Syracuse (keepingitheel.com; Pearson)

With just two weeks until the start of the 2020 season the UNC Football program has opened up as double-digit favorites over Syracuse

The start of the 2020 college football season is just under two weeks away for the UNC Football program and it’s safe to say expectations are at an all-time high. Mack Brown and his staff have started to turn this program around and could be in store for a big 2020 campaign.

But before we get all excited about what the future holds, UNC has to take things one game at a time.

First up for the Tar Heels on September 12th is a home game against the Syracuse Orange in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels will meet the Orange for the first time since 2018, a thrilling game that UNC was unfortunately on the wrong side of.

This season, things should be different. The two teams had completely opposite 2020 campaigns with the Orange struggling and UNC having a solid year. When the two teams do meet, the Tar Heels will enter as favorites.

According to BetOnline, the Tar Heels enter Week 1 as 17.5 point favorites over Syracuse:

#UNC opens up as a 17.5-point favorite in its season opener against Syracuse.
— Jacob Turner (@JacobTurnerTHI) August 30, 2020
This shouldn’t be surprising as UNC is returning a lot of starters from both their offense and defense including quarterback Sam Howell and linebacker Chazz Surratt. The one thing to consider is the amount of practices both teams have missed this offseason due to COVID-19 as well as it not being a normal offseason.

Emerman: Athletes are worried about traveling. Maybe we should be, too. (DO; Emerman)

After spending much of the summer in a safe, contained environment on campus, many Syracuse football players are worried.

Early in training camp, they sat out multiple practices to address health concerns associated with playing this season. Chief among them was the idea of traveling to campuses where COVID-19 is more prevalent than in central New York and where it’s unclear how well their opponents are protected and handling the virus.

On Aug. 13, defensive lineman Josh Black said it’s the “biggest concern.” Defensive back Trill Williams didn’t rule out potentially sitting out a game if the Orange felt their opponent’s protocol was insufficient.

SU’s tour up and down the east coast begins in two weeks in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on a campus that recently reported a 31.3% COVID-19 positivity rate. If the season persists through the pandemic, Syracuse will make three additional trips to hot states on New York’s travel advisory: South Carolina, Kentucky and Indiana. Athletes are right to be concerned — these road trips have the potential to put the whole Syracuse community at risk.

“(The players’) safety depends a lot on what North Carolina and what the other teams are doing, and if there’s going to be a case on the other teams, which is highly likely given the transmission dynamics of the schools with the teams at risk,” David Larsen, an environmental epidemiologist and SU professor, told The Daily Orange.

Orange Watch: 2020 Syracuse football game-by-game predictions, Part I - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: With still so many unknowns surrounding the questionable decision for the ACC to forge ahead with the pandemic-plagued 2020 season, one that will feature face shield coverings for players and masks for coaches/personnel, as we head into September, we’ll remain optimistic. We present our annual forecast of the entire (11-game) regular season in schedule order. This year we look back at the last meeting against each opponent, and look ahead to this season’s game forecast. Our predictions will run in three parts, with our predictions on the first three games below.

At North Carolina-September 12

Last Time: Then-backup redshirt freshman quarterback Tommy Devito looked amazing with his throwing arm, coming off the bench to rescue SU in the fourth quarter in the Dome in 2018. Down 20-7, Devito threw two 40-yard-plus touchdown passes, then flipped the game-winning four-yard toss in the second overtime period as the Orange gutted out a thrilling 40-37 victory.

This Time: In the summer of COVID-19, both schools have had to isolate and/or quarantine students when they returned to campus in August, which subsequently altered the Tar Heels practice schedule. While in SU’s case, miscommunicating testing protocols also disrupted practice time. UNC sophomore quarterback Sam Howell was a third-team all-ACC selection last year, and figures to pick up where he left off. North Carolina 28 – Syracuse 18 (0-1).

At Pittsburgh-September 19

Last Time: Utilizing a “Pitt Special” trick play, in which quarterback Kirby Pickett, after two lateral passes, threw a 43-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter, the Panthers led by 18 at halftime in the Dome before holding off a second half ‘Cuse rally to win 27-20. It was Pittsburgh’s fifth win in the last six meetings in the series.

This Time: Pitt just scheduled its 2020 opening game last week versus FCS foe Austin Peay, less than three weeks before the kickoff at Heinz Field. The Panthers took a hit with the loss of two defensive starters during preseason camp, but Pickett returns for his senior season. For some reason Pitt has given Dino Babers and company fits since he took over as Orange coach, including those 76 points scored in the 2016 finale. Pittsburgh 32-Syracuse 21 (0-2).

Georgia Tech-September 26

Last Time: In Syracuse’s first ACC season in 2013, Scott Shafer’s first SU team did not look prepared to compete in Atlanta being demolished 56-0. The Orange rushing defense was especially exploited giving up seven touchdowns on the ground, while the two SU quarterbacks, Terrel Hunt and Drew Allen, combined for just 133-yards in the air.

This Time: It will be the long-awaited debut of the renovated Dome, replete with a new permanent roof, a structure that will be able to support the mammoth new video scoreboard hanging from above. There’s also upgraded concession areas and rest rooms, but it’s not likely that many spectators will be able to take advantage, with a yet-to-be-announced percentage of capacity that will be allowed inside. Syracuse 30-Georgia Tech 16 (1-2).

Carrier Dome renovations continue ahead of football season-opener (DO; Hamer)

Though the coronavirus pandemic shut down Syracuse’s campus in March, the $118 million Carrier Dome renovations have continued.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s executive order on March 20 required all nonessential workers to stay home, but construction workers were not included, allowing renovations to the Dome to continue.

Syracuse Vice President and Chief Facilities Officer Pete Sala said at a press conference Aug. 7 that renovations remain on track for the Dome to be operational for SU’s football home-opener against Georgia Tech on Sept. 26.

“I’m very confident,” Sala said. “I’m watching what’s going up, I know when things are supposed to be in town in Syracuse. The workforce is very, very, very dedicated.”

Boston College adds Texas State to 2020 football schedule

Boston College will host Texas State at Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill, Mass., on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2020. The game will mark the first-ever meeting between the two schools on the gridiron.

The addition of Texas State completes Boston College’s revised 2020 football schedule, which includes 10 games against ACC opponents and the Bobcats as their lone non-conference foe.
That leaves just one ACC team without a non-conference opponent: the Virginia Cavaliers.

I'm working on designing a new "ACCFootballRx" t-shirt, but it occurs to me that some of you might want one of Mark Packer's "Southern Fried Football" tees, so here's the link:

By the way, if you'd like to check out Packman's old Southern Fried Football website (no longer updated, but worth a look if you've never read it before), here's the link for that:

If nothing else, there's a great map of the Southern football teams (scroll down) on that web page.

Ranking The Notre Dame 2020 Football Schedule (SI; Driskell)

Notre Dame is set to kick off the 2020 season in less than two weeks, which makes the fact the Irish didn’t finalize their season’s schedule until this past week so indicative of what has been the wildest offseason of my lifetime.

As we get closer and closer to game week, we can finally break down the entire Notre Dame schedule. Of course, the schedule is dominated by ACC opponents, and the 2020 season marks Notre Dame’s first as a member of the ACC for football.

In early August we ran a two-part series breaking down and ranking the ACC schedule. Quite a bit has changed since then, with Notre Dame adding South Florida to the schedule and some important players opting out of the season.

With the schedule and rosters likely now set as much as can be, let’s rank the 2020 Notre Dame opponents. This ranking isn’t just a list of which team is best; it’s a combination of the talent of the opposing roster, how the team matches up against Notre Dame and location/timing of the game.

11. SOUTH FLORIDA BULLS

2019 Record: 4-8

South Florida has fallen on very hard times in recent seasons. After going 21-4 in 2016-17, the Bulls went 11-14 over the last two seasons, including 4-8 last fall, which resulted in head coach Charlie Strong being fired. South Florida now begins the Jeff Scott era. Scott came over from Clemson, where as co-offensive coordinator he was part of a pair of national championships.

The Bulls return 13 starters and they aren’t completely devoid of talent, but Scott and the new staff will need to do a complete culture change within the program. Getting that done is going to take a lot longer than two games.

10. SYRACUSE ORANGE

2019 Record: 5-7

I’m not as high on Syracuse as the preseason magazines are, and Dino Babers and his staff are good enough to surprise me this season. My issue is more about the lack of talent on the roster, especially on defense. Syracuse went from 40.2 points per game on offense in 2018 to just 28.3 in 2019. While there is some talent at the skill positions, the line is shaky and Tommy DeVito was solid, but not spectacular last fall.

Defensively, the Orange gave up 30.7 points per game last fall. Even worse, they lost seven starters, including a pair of very talented ends. There is some talent in the secondary (Andre Cisco, Ifeatu Melifonwu), but the front seven returns just one starter. Outscoring Notre Dame is going to be incredibly difficult for Syracuse.
...

https://georgiatech./news/scouting-the-opponent-syracuse r1vals.com; Tankersley)

Dino Barber’s team finished 5-7 last season in what was supposed to be a good season for the Orange. The Orange were ranked preseason #22 in 2019 after an impressive 10-win 2018 campaign, but they would drop 4-straight ACC games last season going (2-6) overall in conference play with sole wins over Wake Forest and Duke. This season, Barber’s Orange will return 7 offensive starters and 4 defensive starters.

The Orange were terrible at defense last season, to say the least, allowing 499 YPG including 231 rushing YPG in conference play on defense. They did, however, see some life in their offense. Starting QB Tommy Devito, a junior will return as the presumed starter after a great 2019 season. Devito had a 63.3% completion percentage for 2,360 yards on 213 completions. He had 19 TDs as well to go along with only 5 INTs. His favorite target, however, Trishton Jackson has moved on to the NFL. Jackson was responsible for 11 touchdown receptions and over 1,000+ receiving yards. It will be interesting to see who steps up for the Orange at the wide receiver position this year.

KEY THINGS TO KNOW

1) With little returning, it’s hard to say just how good the Orange will be. Offensively in 2019, they struggled from the offensive line, allowing 50 sacks on the season. It will be important to note that their offensive success will probably come from that position again this year. If they give Devito time in the pocket, their offense has the potential to be as good as their 2018 season, even without Jackson returning. (In 2018 the Orange finished 10-3 with two of those losses coming from top-4 teams. At the time, #3 Notre Dame and #3 Clemson.)

2) The defense will be the big question mark for Barber’s 2020 team. If Syracuse cannot improve from its 2019 defensive woes, look for another really tough 2020 season. With only 4 returning starters, it will be extremely tough for the Orange to improve drastically, but they can still improve. In two previous years, Syracuse has had a well-balanced defensive line, but they’ll lose key starters such as All-ACC DE Alton Robinson and will look to their depth chart to replace such talent. Also important to note, Syracuse has lost their top two tacklers from previous seasons, three years in a row. Yeah, this doesn’t look pretty.

http://allsportsdiscussion.com/2020/08/30/best-and-worst-case-record-for-duke-football-in-2020/ (ASD; Fann)

Best / Worse Case Record for :

Louisville | Virginia | Miami | Georgia Tech | Boston College | Notre Dame | Pittsburgh | Florida State | Virginia Tech | NC State | Clemson | Syracuse | North Carolina | Wake Forest

ACC 2020 Football Schedule

Duke
For just the second time since 2011, Duke didn’t make a bowl game after a 5-7 2019. They haven’t had two consecutive losing seasons since 2010-2011. David Cutcliffe has been of the better coaches in the ACC for more than a decade, and it’s hard to see Duke having another losing with Cutcliffe at the helm. Duke is certainly one of the teams this year I expect to rebound.

Will Go 7-4 (6-4) if:
The passing games comes alive. 2019 was not a typical David Cutcliffe Duke offense. The offense was 114th in the country, with a passing offense was 110th. Clemson transfer Chase Brice, I believe is the favorite to win job, and under the tutelage of Cutcliffe the offense should flourish. The defense has some talent. Chris Rumph is a NFL caliber DE and forms strong tandem with fellow DE Victor Dimukeje. The opening game against Notre Dame will be tough, but before North Carolina on November 7, Duke could still go anywhere from 4-2 to 5-1. Boston College, and Virginia Tech are swing games. After them at Syracuse, at NC State, and Charlotte are not overly difficult.

Will Go 4-7 (4-6) if:
The offense is again a total mess. We told you Duke was 114th in offense last year. If that continues, it’s going to be very difficult for Duke’s defense to carry the Blue Devils. The defense is a decent unit with some talent, but not it’s not capable of lifting Duke to a winning season alone. An 0-3 start could sink the season quickly. Notre Dame is likely a loss in the opening game, but Boston College and Virginia Tech even in Durham could be very tricky. BC and VT are early games that Duke needs at least a split. The could define Duke’s season.

UNC coach sees promising signs for football’s starting point (thetimesnews.com; Smith)

While chatting with a member of the crew that refereed one of North Carolina’s football scrimmages during the past week, coach Mack Brown happened upon another encouraging checkpoint in the winding journey toward a hopeful fall season.

The official told Brown he had received the assignments for the first four games he’s scheduled to work.

“I do think, for our players and our coaches,” Brown said, “this is really the first time everybody feels like we’re getting this close to playing and this is really going to happen. From everything I’m hearing, I’m feeling more like we’re going to play right now than ever before.”

The Tar Heels are inside of two weeks to their first game, the Sept. 12 season opener against Syracuse, under the Atlantic Coast Conference’s new football model for the fall in this time of coronavirus.

Is Louisville football poised for bigger leap in 2020 under Scott Satterfield? (saturdayblitz.com; Caudell)

After a successful debut season, can Scott Satterfield take the next step and have Louisville football play for a spot in the ACC championship game?

Most in college football had a huge respect for Scott Satterfield as a football coach for what he had built during his time at Appalachian State, but nobody expected him to do much in his first season at Louisville.

The Cardinals had fallen on harden times with the departure of NFL MVP Lamar Jackson and head coach Bobby Petrino was falling out of favor with just about everyone. Louisville fired Petrino during the 2018 season after a 2-8 start to the year and hired Satterfield to take the program in a new direction.

Louisville went from 2-10 to 8-5 and the Cardinals come into 2020 with a lot of momentum and heightened expectations and many, including myself, think they can challenge for a spot in this year’s ACC title game.

Year two of a coach’s tenure is when you can generally see where a program has the capability of going. Nick Saban had Alabama at 12-2, Kirby Smart had Georgia in the championship game, and Pete Carroll had USC in the Orange Bowl.

Now I’m not saying that Satterfield could have have Louisville playing at that kind of level because I don’t think they have that kind of talent that those programs had. I’m just saying that another reason to watch Louisville is that a coach’s second year is when you can sometimes see what kid of program that they are about to become and with so many returning starters, it is easy to see why people are buying stock into Louisville football this season.

Coronavirus forces Adirondack Railroad to postpone popular Polar Express train rides (PS; $; O'Toole)

There will be no train rides to the North Pole filled with magic, Christmas cheer and visits from Santa on the popular Polar Express at Utica’s Union Station this winter.

That’s because the coronavirus pandemic has forced Adirondack Railroad to postpone the 2020 season.

In an email sent to families this weekend, Adirondack Railroad Preservation Society board president Bill Branson said the nonprofit decided to postpone the 2020 Polar Express season to keep everyone safe.

“Our principal concern has always been the safety of our guests but that has taken a wholly different meaning this year as the world attempts to stare down a barely visible enemy,” Branson said in the email. “While our directors have worked hard to balance our financial obligations with the need to run trains, we chose to make our highest priority you, our riders, and your safety. Therefore, we decided to postpone the Polar Express ride for 2020.”

Adirondack Railroad operates The Polar Express train rides each holiday season out of Utica’s Union Station.

On each trip, children and adults are encouraged to dress in their coziest pajamas and are served hot chocolate and cookies. Trains head to the North Pole, where Santa greets guests and gives the first gift of Christmas: a bell cut from Santa’s sleigh.

“Deciding to postpone the polar ride this year has not been an easy decision as our polar income is substantial and effectively pays the bills for much of the season,” Branson said in the email. “Being subject to many regulators and with no authority from New York State, we remain in limbo while having to consider a substantial investment which could be cancelled at the last moment by NYS.”

Adirondack Railroad has asked anyone who already purchased tickets for the 2020 season to email Polar2021@adirondackrr.com before Dec. 15 with a decision on how they’d like to proceed. The options are:

1. Rollover your 2020 reservation and use it in 2021. A special pre-opening week will be set aside for current ticket holders to choose dates and seating. This option will only be open to current ticket holders.

2. Transfer your reservation to another family member so they can use it in 2021.

3. Seek a refund for the 2020 tickets you have purchased.

4. Donate all or part of your ticket purchase to Adirondack Railroad. Donations are tax-deductible.
