Welcome to Do Something Nice Day!

Yesterday you may have celebrated International Toot Your Own Flute Day, where you spent the day being selfish and thinking only about yourself. Today is a day to be selfless and think about others. Not only should you think about them, but you should put your thoughts into actions by doing something nice for them. Whatever you do should be done not because it will evoke a positive response from someone else, but because your are doing it from your heart. So often we go through our days in a hurry and don't think about the effect on someone else that stopping and pausing to do something nice will have. Today is a day to set a foundation of kindness that hopefully will stay long after this day has passed.

College football odds: Syracuse a slight underdog against 0-4 Duke (PS; Owens)

Duke University is still looking for its first win this college football season, but oddsmakers think it’s possible that win might come Saturday in Syracuse.

The 0-4 Blue Devils, coming off a 38-31 loss to Virginia Tech on Saturday, are a 1.5-point favorite over Syracuse, according to BetOnline.com.

The teams will meet at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Carrier Dome. It will be the second of a three-game homestand for the Orange.

Syracuse (1-2) is coming off a bye week after getting its first victory of the season, a 37-20 win over Georgia Tech. The Orange opened as an 8-point underdog against the Yellow Jackets.

In fact, the Orange have yet to be favored in a game this season. Syracuse opened the season as a 23.5-point underdog at North Carolina, and was a 21-point underdog in Week 2 against Pittsburgh.

Duke opens as 1.5-point favorites over Syracuse (247sports.com; Rowe)

Duke has started the 2020 college football season with four consecutive losses, but Las Vegas has them as a favorite on the road against Syracuse in this weekend's game. The Blue Devils find themselves in last place of the combined Atlantic Coast Conference standings, giving up 32.3 points and scoring just 17.5 points per game through their first four contests. The Orange have played three games, but are suffering from similar difficulties scoring (17.7 points per game) while allowing 24.0 points per game.

One of the biggest issues facing Duke's offense through the first quarter of action this year had been their prolific turnover woes, as they coughed up the ball 14 times through three games. Just one other team, Georgia Tech, had given the ball away more than ten times. On Saturday against Virginia Tech, Duke only turned it over once on a Chase Brice interception. That was the first time in the past twelve games the Blue Devils had recorded a positive turnover margin, going all the way back to Week Four against the Hokies last year. Last year, Syracuse blew Duke out in Wallace Wade 49-6 as they suffered three turnovers to Syracuse's zero.

Fizz Radio 10/3: SU Offense, Position Grades And Recruiting with Mike McAllister – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; podcast; Shults)

Thomas Shults and Brad Klein discuss if Syracuse’s offense has turned the corner after a 37-20 victory over Georgia Tech. Then later, the guys hand out position grades, followed by an interview with Mike McAllister of SINow to go over the 2021 football recruiting class.

What Do You Do When Your Football Team Is 0-4? (DBR; King)

It speaks well of the respect David Cutcliffe has from just about everyone that we haven’t seen calls for his ouster after Duke started 0-4 and that on top of a tailspin at the end of last season (Duke is 1-9 in its last 10 games).

It won't surprise us if some people do start get antsy though and we wanted to take a minute to remind Duke fans of where they have been before.

Since the late Mike McGee departed in 1978, Duke has not kept a football coach more than five years and most got four year contracts which weren't renewed.

None of them, with the golden exception of Steve Spurrier, who left Duke for Florida, have gone on to glory, but the turnover decimated the program. When Cutcliffe was interviewed, remember, he chose to drive to Durham from Knoxville so that he could get out quickly if it was as big a disaster as it appeared.

Duke football cannot come up with big play in fourth straight defeat (balldurham.com; Connelly)

The Duke football team fell once again for its fourth straight defeat to start the 2020 season.

Duke played football. Duke lost said football game. It’s the fourth straight loss for Duke to open the 2020 season.

This time, the Blue Devils fell back at Wallace Wade Stadium to the Virginia Tech Hokies, who were without 21 players and their defensive coordinator because of the coronavirus.

Virginia Tech also was without its four starting cornerbacks, but the Blue Devils were unable to move the ball downfield until the fourth quarter, and Duke could not come up with the big play it needed to get its first victory.

The Blue Devils were gifted a touchdown to open the game after Virginia Tech muffed a punt, which rolled into the end zone. Duke fell on the ball for a score following its second three-and-out of the ball game.

Chase Brice and the Blue Devils didn’t score the rest of the half but only trailed 10-7 as Virginia Tech had just as many issues as Duke at the quarterback position.

Virginia Tech football: 5 takeaways in Hokies’ 38-31 win over Duke (gobblercountry.com; Manning)

The Virginia Tech Hokies narrowly defeated the Duke Blue Devils 38-31 on Saturday to move to 2-0 on the season.

Much of the talk regarding this game centered on revenge for the Hokies, who suffered an embarrassing blowout loss to the Blue Devils last September.

Unfortunately for the Hokies, they were entering this game down 21 players and two coaches, including defensive coordinator Justin Hamilton, due to COVID-19.

To make matters worse, it was one position group that suffered the most. Virginia Tech’s top four cornerbacks and starting free safety were all out of action. While Duke doesn’t possess an elite air attack, it was always going to be an uphill battle for Tech’s defense.

Ultimately, the Hokies persevered and pulled out a gritty 38-31 win to keep the Blue Devils winless.

Here are five takeaways from Virginia Tech’s win.

Khalil Herbert is ridiculously good

The senior running back who transferred from Kansas may have a spot reserved on this list for the remainder of the season.

It was another amazing performance from Herbert, who rushed for 100 yards in his debut. Against Duke, Herbert carried the ball 20 times for 208 yards and two touchdowns.

➖ 2 rush TDs

ACC Round Up and Power Rankings - Week 4 (fromtherumbleseat.com; Cramer)

...
  • 8. North Carolina State (LW12) - The Wolfpack pulled an upset on the road against Pittsburgh with a great performance from QB Devin Leary. If they can improve defense then they should have a good match-up when they head to Virginia.
  • 9. Boston College (LW8) - Boston College tried to steal a win from UNC but wasn’t quite consistent enough to pull the upset. Jurkovec has been respectable in his first year despite a struggling run game. Pitt visits next after dropping their first game to NC State.
  • 10. Syracuse (LW9) - The Cuse had a bye after their first win of the season against Tech two weeks ago. They get a struggling Duke team to try to get their record back to .500.
  • 11. Louisville (LW10) - Louisville was on a bye and has struggled since their first game of the season. They will need to get a win against a struggling Georgia Tech when the visit Atlanta on Friday night but may not have their QB ready after being injured against Pitt.

Biggest Losers Week 5 2020 (RX; HM)

Biggest Losers Week 5 2020

Who helped the ACC by losing?
Biggest Loser: the Big XII.
#9 Texas lost at home to unranked TCU, 31-33

#18 Oklahoma lost at unranked Iowa St, 30-37

After struggling against Texas Tech last week, the Longhorns finally fell to TCU (note: this is their 6th loss to TCU in the last 7 years). Meanwhile, the Sooners already have their second loss of the season. (Just for good measure, Baylor lost to WVU as well). The only hope this conference has for a playoff bid at this point is probably an undefeated Oklahoma State team.

Where's the CFB Belt Now? (10/5/20) (RX; HM)

Where's the CFB Belt Now? (10/5/20)

The CFB Belt is in... Fayetteville, AR?

When we ran our CFB Belt UPDATE in June of 2019 it was in the hands of the Ohio State Buckeyes, who had won it during the 2018 season then never lost again (thanks, in part, to missing the playoffs).

Ohio State held on to the belt throughout the entire 2019 season and the Big Ten Championship Game... until they played the Clemson Tigers in what was probably the best, most hard-fought playoff game in the history of the CFP. Alas, for Buckeye fans, their team lost the belt.

Virginia football notebook: Mendenhall pleased with Cavaliers' resilience and toughness (dailyprogress.com; Conlin)

Internally, Virginia’s football program is well past the point of moral victories.

Externally, Saturday’s 41-23 loss to Clemson felt like a step in the right direction.

While they lost, the Wahoos were within two possessions at multiple times in the second half, and they were close to making the contest a one-possession game.
The Cavaliers lost, but they showed flashes of brilliance against the nation’s No. 1 team.
Losing doesn’t cut it at the Power 5 level. When programs lose consistently, they move on from head coaches and seek new ways to join the winner’s circle.

Under Bronco Mendenhall, UVa is no longer a consistent loser, however.
The Cavaliers (1-1, 1-1 ACC) are building themselves toward being a consistent threat in the ACC. To do that, Virginia needs to stand up to Clemson.

Saturday’s showing for the Wahoos was, by almost every account, better than the 2019 ACC Championship Game.

The Cavaliers scored more points. They held Clemson to fewer points. The total yardage gap was -49 instead of -232.
UVa looked like it belonged on the field with Clemson this season. That wasn’t the case last year.

“I liked our conditioning, I liked our resilience, I liked our toughness, I liked our mindset,” Mendenhall said. “The game was a completely different game than a year ago, and they’re not comparable.”

Recapping this week in Duke Athletics: Football loses again, women's soccer slides past No. 3 Clemson (dukechronicle.com; DBR; Staff)

Disappointing is the only word to sum up Duke football thus far. After an up-and-down performance against a Virginia Tech team with 21 players and two full-time coaches out due to COVID-19, the Blue Devils (0-4, 0-4 in the ACC) once again came up short. Running backs Mataeo Durant and Deon Jackson finally both had productive days on the ground, but a more complete team performance is crucial for Duke to get into the win column against Syracuse this coming weekend. -Jake Piazza

Tulsa masterfully trolls No. 11 UCF following huge upset win (saturdaydownsouth.com; Staff)

Big win for the scheme...

The unranked Tulsa Golden Hurricane ended No. 11 UCF’s 2-0 start and 21-game home winning streak Saturday night 34-26.

For the AAC, it was a devastating loss, because the conference needed a highly-ranked UCF vs. a highly-ranked Cincinnati game, with the winner emerging to compete for a College Football Playoff spot. Now, however, the conference may have just been eliminated altogether.

Yes, a Group of 5 team has never made the Playoff, but this could have been the year to do it, considering the circumstances and just how bad the Big 12 has been.

After UCF beat Georgia Tech in Week 1, Knights quarterback Dillon Gabriel said his team was the best in the state. Fans roasted UCF late Saturday night following the bad loss to Tulsa.

Tulsa also masterfully trolled UCF following the win with a funny bounce house tweet. UCF calls Spectrum Stadium the “Bounce House.”

Why is a Jackson Pollock painting, and its sale at an auction, so significant? (PS; $; Herbert)

Who is Jackson Pollock, and why is one of his less famous works of art — and its upcoming sale at an auction — so significant?

The Everson Museum of Art will be auctioning off a painting by the famed abstract expressionist this week through Christie’s Auctions. “Red Composition,” 1946, is expected to sell for millions. The Syracuse museum leadership said it plans to use the money to diversify its collection by acquiring works created by artists of color, women artists and other underrepresented creators.

“The murder of George Floyd and a string of senseless killings of Black lives have propelled us into urgent discussions surrounding the museum’s role and responsibility in fighting racism inside and outside our walls,” Everson Director Elizabeth Dunbar said. “Now is the time for action. By deaccessioning a single artwork, we can make enormous strides in building a collection that reflects the amazing diversity of our community and ensure that it remains accessible to all for generations to come.”

Some have criticized the planned sale as “inexcusable,” while others have praised the Everson for taking bold steps to initiate change.

Who was Jackson Pollock?

Anyone with a cursory knowledge of art has heard of Pollock, an American painter who epitomized the movement known as Abstract Expressionism, focusing on form and color instead of objects. Born in Wyoming in 1912, he became a major figure in modern art in the 1940s with his acclaimed “drip” technique, flinging and dripping paint onto a canvas on the floor of his studio in East Hampton, New York. The process was also known as “action painting,” as he would move across the canvas, injecting emotion and energy into the volatile art. Time magazine dubbed him “Jack the Dripper.”
