Welcome to International Beer and Pizza Day!
International Beer and Pizza Day celebrates the food combination of beer and pizza. Both of these foods are enjoyed all around the world, and there are many varieties of each. Beer is made at small craft breweries and big corporate ones. It is drunk at bars, at get-togethers, at breweries, and at sporting events. Pizza is made at small family pizzerias and big national chains and can be purchased frozen in grocery stores. It is enjoyed at parties, by the slice while on the go, and as a simple meal at home.
Although foods have long been paired, the combination of pizza and beer is a relatively new concept. They go well together because their flavors enhance and contrast with each other. Certain beers pair better with certain pizzas, and the explosion of craft beer has helped with pairings. Lighter and crisper beers, like pilsners and pale ales, go with lighter pizzas, such as those topped with fresh veggies or chicken. The mildness of pilsners goes well with many pizzas, and the slight bitterness of pale ales contrasts well with lighter pizzas. Sour beers pair well with lighter pizzas as well. Darker beers such as stouts and porters go well with heartier, meatier pizzas. IPAs also go well with heartier pizzas, their hoppiness complementing the flavors of the meat and cheese.

Syracuse football vs. Duke: TV channel, time, how to watch free live stream (PS; $; Axelson)
Syracuse football hosts Duke University at the Carrier Dome for the second home game of the season on Saturday, October 10 (10/10/2020).
The game will be broadcast on YES Network, and can be live streamed on Hulu + Live TV.
Syracuse will look to build a winning streak at home coming off a 37-20 victory over Georgia Tech two weeks ago, followed by a bye week. The Orange are 1-2 so far this season, and Saturday’s game will be part two of a three-game homestand in the newly renovated Carrier Dome.
Duke is hungry for its first win of the season against the Orange, after an 0-4 start to 2020. Odddsmakers have them at a slight advantage heading into Saturday’s game, but the winless start is Duke’s worst since 2006.

Syracuse football vs. Duke predictions: See our picks (PS; $; Staff)
The Syracuse football team will face Duke at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the Carrier Dome.
It’s time for our predictions. The panel includes Brent Axe, sports columnist; Chris Carlson, SU sports reporter; Mike Curtis, sports reporter; and Nate Mink, SU football reporter.

Syracuse 35, Duke 14
Asking for five takeaways again is greedy, but I think the ballhawks on the Syracuse defense shake up Chase Brice and the Blue Devils, who have committed 15 turnovers this season, enough to give the Orange offense opportunities to cash in. The biggest question of the day is if Syracuse can run the ball again. I say the Orange do and improve to 2-2.

Syracuse football has no excuse not to dominate takeaways versus Duke (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse football is crushing it in the turnover department, and the Orange should fare well in that arena this Saturday afternoon.
Simple math would suggest that Syracuse football is going to prevail in the turnover section of its contest this coming Saturday afternoon inside the newly renovated Carrier Dome versus winless Duke.
However, if this year has taught us anything amid the novel coronavirus pandemic and so many other issues facing our country and the entire world, it’s that 2020 is chock full of surprises, both explainable and unexplainable.
Thus, Syracuse football rating among the top Division I teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision (“FBS”) as it pertains to takeaways, and the Blue Devils awful to date in this facet of the game, doesn’t in any way guarantee that the ‘Cuse will ultimately conquer Duke in the turnover battle. Yet the Orange clearly possesses the upper hand, at least on paper.

Syracuse football 2021 running back commit Josh Hough stock climbing (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse football 2021 running back commit Josh Hough is garnering some high praise from a recruiting analyst.
Syracuse football 2021 running back commit Josh Hough, who has put up some ridiculous numbers so far in his senior season of high school, is seeing his stock rise, according to Adam Friedman, a recruiting analyst with .
Friedman has published a piece where he takes a look at five players from the East region, regardless of class designation, whose stock is already jumping early in the fall term. Hough, a talented 6-foot-2, 235-pound running back out of Beaver Falls High School in Beaver Falls, Pa., is included in the article.
In one recent contest for Beaver Falls High School, Hough recorded an almost unthinkable 243 rushing yards and three touchdowns on just four carries, per a story by Mike Curtis of Syracuse.com.

Beat writers unanimously predict Syracuse win over Duke to reach .500 (DO; Staff)
Syracuse’s first matchup out of its bye week is a visit from Duke to the Carrier Dome. The Blue Devils are currently winless this year and have lost three of four games by double digits. Its quarterback, Chase Brice, has already thrown seven interceptions. And the Orange have built momentum through a Georgia Tech win where they forced five turnovers and scored 31 points.
In his weekly press conference, SU head coach Dino Babers said that Duke has the advantage entering the game because it had a bye week. The status of Andre Cisco and Eric Coley, two of the Orange’s top defensive backs, remains in jeopardy, too.
Here’s what our beat writers think will happen during Saturday’s game.

Axe: Will Syracuse Football pull the “upset” and beat Duke? (PS; $; Axe)
I tried to pretend it didn’t bother me.
When the point spread for the Duke-Syracuse football game appeared on my Twitter feed earlier this week, I brushed it off.
Duke -1.5.
Bah. That’s just Vegas tilting the line to get more action on the Blue Devils.
List Syracuse as a favorite and the game doesn’t get enough action. List 0-4 Duke as the favorite and curiosity draws in more interest.
Right?
They can’t possibly believe Duke is the favorite in this game? Do they?
Duke is off to its worst start since 2006 after four straight losses to No. 5 Notre Dame, Boston College, Virginia and No. 19 Virginia Tech.

Syracuse football vs Duke preview: Four things to watch for (scacchoops.com; Wall, De Guzman, Haller & Pregler)
For the second year in a row the Syracuse Orange will face the Duke Blue Devils. Last season the Orange used a strong running game and an opportunistic defense to score a decisive road victory. Now off the by week, Syracuse looks to get back to .500 while keeping Duke winless on the season.
Here are the four things we’re watching for on Saturday (You’ll get your fifth back when the boss returns):
Christian: Get more first downs than Duke
I mentioned this in TNIAAP a couple of weeks ago, but take a look at the offensive touchdowns that Syracuse scored against Georgia Tech. Aside from Sean Tucker’s second touchdown, every Orange offensive score came from outside the red zone on big plays. That isn’t a healthy recipe for success, even if it worked against the Yellow Jackets. Syracuse is averaging 13 first downs a game, which is vastly less than the conference median of 23.3.
A Dino Babers offense is great at using speed to tire out opposing defenses. By picking up more first downs, Syracuse can develop its offense with more speed and tempo and decrease its reliance on big plays. That will also force opponents to stay on the field longer, which will help the Orange speed gain a foothold on a game. With a Duke defense that is ranked towards the bottom of most defensive metrics, this should be a good opportunity for Syracuse to work on getting first downs to establish the tempo they want to run the offense at.

Syracuse Orange v. Duke Blue Devils Prediction & Preview (10/10/20) - The Juice Online (the juice; Staff)
Syracuse will try for its second win of the season when they host Duke (12:00 p.m. ET / ACC Network Extra) at the Carrier Dome on Saturday. Ahead of the game, The Juice Online’s Jim Stechschulte and Wes Cheng give their predictions below.
Jim Stechschulte
Season Record 0-1
Duke visits the Orange on Saturday, dragging their 0-4 record with them. The Blue Devils did one thing in their most recent loss that they had not in any other game this season – turn the ball over only once. The Devils have thrown eight interceptions in the last three games with starting quarterback Chase Brice throwing seven of them. For good measure, Duke has also fumbled nine times, losing seven. Their 3.8 turnovers per game are third-most in college football, behind Mississippi State and SU’s last foe, Georgia Tech.
Syracuse had five takeaways against those Yellow Jackets, giving them a total of ten turnovers in three games, good for third in the nation at 3.3 turnovers per game. Seven of those are interceptions, as six different SU players have picked off a pass. It seems like a perfect match for the Orange and an easy way for them to tilt the scale in their favor.

Syracuse hosts winless Duke but remains an underdog again (AP; Kekis)
The Syracuse Orange have one streak going for them — they’re picked as the underdog for the fourth straight time, even at home against a winless team and after a bye week to heal.
Syracuse (1-2, 1-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) hosts Duke on Saturday in the second game inside the refurbished Carrier Dome. Duke (0-4, 0-4) has committed 15 turnovers, the most in the nation. Syracuse is coming off a 37-20 home victory over Georgia Tech and is second nationally in turnovers gained with 10.
The Blue Devils are slight favorites.
Go figure.
“We haven’t been favored (in any game) and you know, that’s OK,” Syracuse coach Dino Babers said. “We need to get better.”
“We try not to focus on that,” Orange redshirt freshman cornerback Garrett Williams added.
Syracuse intercepted four passes in its victory over Georgia Tech, the highest single-game total in Babers’ five years as coach and the most interceptions by the Orange in 14 years. And four players accounted for those picks: freshmen defensive backs Ja’Had Carter and Rob Hanna had their first in college, as did redshirt senior defensive tackle Josh Black, while defensive back Trill Williams added his fourth.

Duke football heads up north to Syracuse still searching for first win (dukechronicle.com; Hurewitz)
Duke is winless through four games for the first time since finishing 0-12 in 2006.
The Blue Devils will try to turn the tides, however, this Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in a road matchup at Syracuse. The last time these two teams squared off was not a game to remember for Duke—a 49-6 dumpster fire at Wallace Wade Stadium.
“A year ago, they came down here and spanked us pretty badly,” head coach David Cutcliffe said. “So another big challenge—fifth ACC game in a row. It is what it is. It's 2020. We're not going to run from the challenge. We are going to run to the challenge.”
Last season’s matchup between the two squads featured a lot of Duke mistakes on both sides of the ball. Obviously, ball control has been something the Blue Devils (0-4, 0-4 in the ACC) have singled out as a point to improve on through the first several weeks of this season, but haven’t seen much change—through four games, Duke’s 15 turnovers lead the nation.

ACC Has Reached a Pinnacle It May Never See Again (SI; Blaudschun)
The moment is here, John Swofford.
Enjoy it.
Bask in the feeling of warmth and satisfaction it gives you for all the work you put in to achieve it.
Remember it, because it's never going to be this good again.
Swofford is the outgoing (soon to be retired) commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference.
He has spent a good working portion of the last 15 years of his life making decisions on how to make the ACC as competitive for national honors in college football as it has been in college basketball.
Swofford latest and perhaps final move was to entice Notre Dame to spend a year as a full-time member in college football.
He like all his conference commissioner brethren have also worked to put together any kind of football season in a COVID-19 dominated world.
And as of now, going into Saturday's games, it has worked—beyond almost anyone's expectations.
If you checked the latest Associated Press Top 25 rankings, ACC teams occupied the No. 1 (Clemson) No. 5 (Notre Dame), No. 7 (Miami) and No. 8 (North Carolina) slots.
That has NEVER happened.

Louisville and Georgia Tech Face Off Friday Night (theacc; Odum)
Geoff Collins believes Georgia Tech is on a path to the top of the ACC.
Early in Collins' second season as coach, the Yellow Jackets are still learning painful lessons about turnovers and other mistakes. A similarly frustrating trend also has Louisville below .500 as the Cardinals prepare for their first visit to Georgia Tech on Friday night.
Louisville (1-2, 0-2 ACC) and Georgia Tech (1-2, 1-1) will be looking to clean up mistakes, including interceptions, that have left each team with two straight losses.
The losing streak hasn't dimmed Collins' optimism.
''This is going to be one of the elite programs in college football sooner than later,'' Collins said. ''The guys understand that. The guys are working toward that every single day. We've just got to learn to not hurt ourselves.''
Jeff Sims has thrown two or more interceptions in each of his first three starts for Georgia Tech, including four in a 37-20 loss at Syracuse on Sept. 26.
Sims, a freshman, has eight interceptions with three touchdown passes.
Sims has rushed for 187 yards and two touchdowns. Offensive coordinator Dave Pattenaude wouldn't mind seeing Sims take off on more runs instead of forcing passes into coverage.
''Jeff knows he's got to protect the ball better,'' Pattenaude said. ''He can't be cavalier with the ball. He's a great athlete. So I said `Listen man, if the guy is covered, don't jam it in there, just take off and run. You've been making a ton of plays just being an athlete and taking off and running.'''

No. 1 Clemson Hosts No. 7 Miami with ACC Supremacy at Stake (theacc.com; Iacobelli)
Miami coach Manny Diaz wants big games like the Miami-Clemson matchup to be much more commonplace.
The seventh-ranked Hurricanes (3-0, 2-0 ACC) can take a step in bringing back the dominance of ''The U'' when they play the No. 1 Tigers (3-0, 2-0) on Saturday night.
The game is the 17th top-10 matchup in ACC history - and Clemson's been in four of the past five. Miami's only appearance the previous six years was in a 38-3 loss to the Tigers in the 2017 ACC championship game.
Diaz believes Miami needs more and more big-game, prime-time matchups that all college football is talking about to return the program to national prominence. Clemson's consistency the past few years (five straight ACC titles and five consecutive trips to the College Football Playoffs) comes from playing and winning such games, a history Diaz knows the Tigers will draw on this week.
''This is not a big game to Clemson,'' Diaz said. ''This is what they do. We've got to get our program the same way.''
It also doesn't hurt to have dynamic playmakers on offense.
Miami quarterback D'Eriq King leads the ACC's highest scoring offense so far. He's got 736 yards passing and six TDs.
Hurricanes tailback Cam'Ron Harris is third in conference rushing with 311 yards and leads the ACC with five rushing touchdowns.

Pooled saliva testing allows SU to overcome national rapid test shortage (DO; Hicks)
Frank Middleton recognized in early March that the country needed to expand coronavirus testing immensely and quickly.
Middleton, the director of the Molecular Analysis Core at SUNY Upstate Medical University, has focused much of his research on identifying RNA using saliva samples. When the pandemic began, Middleton realized he could use a similar process to conduct widespread, saliva-based testing for the coronavirus.
“As soon as we reached the development of (the saliva-based) test, it became apparent to me that, in order to reach the most number of people possible, we should be developing (widespread testing) in parallel with the individual tests,” Middleton said.
Months later, the pooled saliva testing model Middleton helped design has become the backbone of Syracuse University’s coronavirus testing strategy. The tests, which pool 12 saliva samples together at a time, have allowed the university to test the entire campus population during a national shortage of commercially available rapid coronavirus tests, said Vice Chancellor Mike Haynie, who has spearheaded SU’s fall reopening plans.
