Welcome to International Gin and Tonic Day

Gin and tonics have been substantially a British drink for the longest time. As a staple among the list of amazing cocktails out there, gin and tonics have a high bitterness to it, but it dies down with lime and sugar to make it palatable for most people. Whether you order it at a bar or make it at home, gin and tonics deserve their day to be celebrated.

History of International Gin and Tonic Day

The cocktail idea began during the reign of the British East India Company in India during the 1700’s. Malaria had been roaming around in India and became a problem. To treat malaria, George Cleghorn, a Scottish doctor, discovered that quinine, a flavor component of tonic water, could be used to treat malaria. However, not many liked the taste.

So, British officers in India in the early 1800’s began adding water, sugar, lime, and gin to the tonic water, and thus a gin and tonic was born. While tonic water isn’t used as an antimalarial treatment, tonic water contains less quinine and is sweeter. As for the gin component of the cocktail, gin is made explicitly with juniper berries and was sold in 17th century Holland as a cure for medical issues like gout, gallstones and stomach problems.

A Man Among Boys: Syracuse Football Commit Josh Hough Runs Over the Competition

Emerman: With Liberty loss, Syracuse hits rock bottom (DO; Emerman)

Head coach Dino Babers loves describing his Syracuse team with movie references.

When he announced the 2017 recruiting class, Babers compared headliner Tommy DeVito to Denzel Washington in “Glory.” He’s repeatedly quoted “Dumb and Dumber” and likened his offense to “Ford v Ferrari,” a 2019 drama about race cars.

But after Saturday’s 38-21 home loss to Liberty (5-0), Babers’ team is as broken and hopeless as Bruce Wayne staring up into the infinite prison abyss in “The Dark Knight Rises.” Its upcoming matchup with No. 1 Clemson is as lopsided as Rocky Balboa versus Clubber Lang. His tenure at Syracuse is as up-and-down as a Quentin Tarantino film.

Yes, Hugh Freeze is a formidable coach, and the Flames’ dual-threat QB transferred from Auburn. Yes, they were favored by 3.5 points. But there’s no way around it: Saturday was a new low for Babers’ Syracuse program.

“We need to go back, and we need to look at ourselves,” Babers said after the loss. “There’s certain things that we’re still not doing well, we’re not getting better.”

The main reason for the stagnation is injuries, which are exasperated by a stunning lack of depth. But even a junior varsity squad without its best player and starting quarterback doesn’t excuse a catastrophic loss to Liberty.

When Syracuse scheduled a three-game series with Liberty in 2018, the only plausible outcome was three Orange blowout victories. Liberty was a program searching for an identity like the evangelical Notre Dame, which fully joined the FBS last year. LU had never beaten an Atlantic Coast Conference team before beating Syracuse, and the Flames entered the season with just one win over a Power Five opponent.

Reviewing Liberty’s win over Syracuse (aseaofred.com; Bleymaier)

GAME SUMMARY: LIBERTY 38 VS SYRACUSE 21

People have been wondering how truly good is this undefeated Liberty football team, after today I think we can say with certainty that the Flames are proving to be very, very good! A matchup that was dominated by Liberty for a majority of the game, the Flames took the lead with 7 minutes and 49 seconds left in the second quarter and never looked back.

OFFENSE

Liberty finally showed a complete and dominant performance on offense. A team that has struggled with consistency, turnovers, and scoring touchdowns in the red-zone, the Flames offense looked unstoppable today with 5 touchdowns scored and only two trips to the end zone that didn’t end in TDs (one was a field goal and one was a fumble by Willis which were respectively the lone field goal attempt and offensive turnover of the game).

While Willis continued to impress with 182 yards and a touchdown on 16/20 passes as well as 58 yards rushing and a touchdown, the star of the game was absolutely third-string change of pace running back Shedro Louis. Liberty uncharacteristically struggled to run the ball last week against UL Monroe, but the Flames returned to form this week, putting up 338 yards rushing against an ACC defense. A big part of that was Louis who had a career-best game with 10 rushes for 170 yards and two touchdowns (including touchdown runs of 75 and 52).

Babers can't fix Syracuse in 2020. He can save vision (column) (247sports.com; Bailey)

Asking for belief without evidence as a first-year head coach, Dino Babers enamored the Syracuse football fanbase with his vision. Speaking at his introductory press conference in December 2015, Babers asked for time to position the program. He said this would take longer than Bowling Green and Eastern Illinois, where he racked up a 37-16 total record over two years at each school.

Nearly five years later, Babers is in a similar position. He needs time, and speaking after his team's 38-21 loss to Liberty on Saturday, Babers made that clear in a message to the Orange fanbase.

"I expect them to have faith and I expect them to know that we're going to right it," Babers said, "but right now we've got a bunch of young guys playing and a bunch of old guys hurt. And that's the way it's going to be until we start getting some cats back and guys start getting better."

“The way we are playing, it doesn’t matter who we are playing next:” Dino Babers after loss to Liberty (localsyr.com)

For the third time as a head coach at Syracuse, Dino Babers lost to a non-power five conference opponent on Saturday. Liberty, a third year FBS program defeated Syracuse 38-21 at the Carrier Dome.

The loss drops the Orange to 1-4 this season (1-3 in the ACC). Liberty improves to 5-0. It’s the first ever win by the Flames over an ACC school.

Clemson set multiple records during its 73-7 beat down of Georgia Tech on Saturday, including recording the most lopsided victory involving two ACC teams in league history. Up next, the undefeated and top-ranked Tigers will host a 1-4 Syracuse team. The Orange are coming off of a 38-21 home loss to Liberty. Here’s what you need to know about Syracuse.

SYRACUSE (1-4) AT NO. 1 CLEMSON (5-0)
When: Noon Saturday
Where: Memorial Stadium in Clemson

1. Clemson is a massive favorite, but Tigers coach Dabo Swinney isn’t taking a victory for granted. Swinney on Sunday pointed out that Syracuse finished 4-8 in 2017, and one of its four victories was against Clemson.

2. Trevor Lawrence continues to lead the way in the Heisman race after throwing for 404 yards and five touchdowns Saturday against Georgia Tech. Lawrence put up those impressive numbers despite only playing one series in the second half. He has completed 73% of his passes so far this season for 1,544 yards. The Georgia native has 15 touchdowns and one interception. Lawrence can continue to add to his impressive numbers this week against a Syracuse defense that is allowing 485 yards of offense per game.

3. As much as Syracuse has struggled on defense, the Orange have been even worse offensively. Syracuse is averaging less than 20 points per game and is completing less than 20% of passing attempts. That’s bad news against a Brent Venables defense.

What Happened to Syracuse's Defense? Two Words: Andre Cisco (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse's All-American safety Andre Cisco was injured during pregame warmups prior to the Georgia Tech game. He was ruled out for the season a couple of weeks later, and then declared for the NFL Draft. Cisco was one of the better defensive playmakers in college football as the FBS active leader in interceptions. But his absence has led to a decline in a perhaps unexpected area.

In the first two games of the season, Syracuse's defense was quite good. They forced turnovers, got after the quarterback, stopped the run and limited the big play. Both of those games Cisco started and played nearly all of the defensive of snaps. Since the injury, he has not played a snap over the last three games. With that, the Orange defense has fallen apart.

While they have actually increased the rate in which they force turnovers, nearly every other metric has deteriorated. Take a look at the numbers.

3 takeaways from Syracuse football's 38-21 loss to Liberty - The Juice Online (the juice; Gustin)

It is safe to say that the Syracuse football team has reached a low point in this 2020 COVID-stricken season. Saturday’s 38-21 loss to Liberty is perhaps SU’s most embarrassing game since its loss to Akron in the Greg Robinson era.

Liberty appeared to be the team from a Power 5 conference playing underdog Syracuse. Whether it was in the run game on offense or the pressure on the defensive side, Liberty flat out outplayed the Orange.

Here are three takeaways from the loss:

1. The defense continued its struggles against the run game.

The major focus for the Syracuse defense was slowing down Liberty’s quarterback-running back combination of Malik Willis and Joshua Mack. The two had combined for more than 600 rushing yards heading into the contest.

Syracuse football hits bottom and loses to Liberty - The Juice Online (the juice; Stechschulte)

Saturday afternoon, Syracuse suffered what is probably the most embarrassing loss of the Dino Babers era, getting handled at home by Liberty, 38-21. The Flames (5-0) came into the game a modest favorite over the Orange (1-4), who have been hammered with injuries, but cruised throughout, leading for almost 45 minutes of game time, including the final two-and-a-half quarters.

The victory was the first by Liberty over a Power Five conference team since jumping to the FBS level of play prior to the 2018 season and the first over a Power Five foe team since opening the 2017 season with a 48-45 win at Baylor, who would finish that season 1-11.

Similar to SU’s last outing against Duke, the Orange defense simply could not stop the visitor’s rushing attack. The Flames torched the Syracuse defense for 338 rushing yards, including rushing touchdowns of 75 and 52 yards, as well as eight other carries netting double figure yardage.

The SU offense, which was without starting quarterback Tommy DeVito, was also not up to task, as they mustered 308 yards overall on 67 plays. Liberty rolled up 520 total yards in the game, needing just one more play than Syracuse to generate that output.

Each squad hung a three-and-out on their opening possession, but the Orange broke through the second time they had the ball. Rex Culpepper completed five-of-six passes on the drive, including a pretty post pattern off play action to Taj Harris for a 17-yard touchdown. Andre Szmyt booted the extra point through the uprights and SU held a 7-0 lead less than seven minutes into the game.

D.A.: Dino Babers Faces The Low Point – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Amendolara)

This is it, there can be no lower feeling inside the Syracuse football walls. SU fans remember the demolitions at the hands of Miami and Virginia Tech toward the end of the Coach P era. They remember the running-in-place of the Scott Shafer years. They remember the darkness of the early Doug Marrone tenure.

None of those low points match this one. Liberty just trolled SU on Twitter. The closest event Orange fans have to getting punished at the Dome by Liberty is September 6, 2008. On that fateful day the misguided hope of Greg Robinson was smashed into smithereens. Twelve years ago was the inglorious 42-28 loss to Akron at the Dome, a fatal blow to Groobers and his disastrous reign. It set in motion a season that would be Robinson’s last. SU finished 3-9, and there was no coming back from a defeat to the Zips. It was Akron’s second win ever over a Power 5 opponent. It declared in neon lights how unprepared Robinson was for the job. It also alerted SU fans just how far the program had fallen.

This feels the same way. How could SU be so thin on defense that it allows a program that just recently elevated from FCS to run for more than 300 yards at the Dome? How could an ACC team not only get beaten at home by Liberty, but be so obviously the inferior team? To be fair, the Flames are led by a former SEC head coach, and recruit far better than their reputation suggests. But the writing was on the wall early as Vegas installed Liberty as favorites, and Yahoo Sports writer Pete Thamel predicted before the game an SU loss in a blowout.

Coaches Poll top 25: Notre Dame jumps Georgia to take No. 3 spot in college football rankings (cbssports.com; Kercheval)

Notre Dame only scored 12 points in its bizarre 12-7 win over Louisville on Saturday. But, hey, a win is a win, and that was enough for college football coaches to put the Fighting Irish at No. 3 in this week's Coaches Poll, released Sunday. That's one spot above Georgia, which lost to Alabama 41-24 and fell from No. 3 last week to No. 4 this week.

Notre Dame is 4-0 and will look to make a run at No. 1 Clemson during its only year in the ACC as a full-time member. The Tigers, off a 73-7 shellacking of Georgia Tech stayed atop the coaches poll while Alabama garnered eight first-place votes at No. 2. Ohio State, which will start its season in Week 8, rounds out the top five.

North Carolina fell seven spots to No. 13 after its comeback against Florida State fell short while there were some new faces towards the bottom of the rankings. Coastal Carolina, Marshall each entered the newest rankings. Auburn, Tennessee, and Louisiana all dropped out after losses this week.

AP Poll - 10/18/20 (RX; HM)

AP Poll - 10/18/20

In our latest "Biggest Losers" post we predicted a few changes:

  • Georgia would fall out of the top 4 - wrong.
  • Notre Dame would move up to #3 - correct.
  • Auburn, Tennessee, and Louisiana would drop out of the top 25 - correct.
  • UNC would fall, but remain in the top 25 - correct.
  • Miami would move up, but not into the top 10 yet - correct.
  • Virginia Tech would move up, and NC State would join the top 25 - correct.
I guess I underestimated the #SECbias in the AP poll.

Shot of Joe to Go: Future NC State-Duke football matchups are up to Clemson :: WRALSportsFan.com (wralsportsfan.com; video; Giglio)

WRAL sports analyst Joe Giglio explains why Clemson controls how the ACC makes its football schedules.

https://www.syracuse.com/orangefoot...o-babers-as-syracuse-football-head-coach.html (PS; $; Axe)

Syracuse football just suffered through the ultimate October surprise in losing to Liberty 38-21 at the Carrier Dome on Saturday.

Syracuse is 1-4 and merely getting another win in the 2020 season now seems like a gargantuan task. The Orange just lost to a team that entered the FBS level of college football about five minutes ago and was only put on the schedule as a gimme game.

Syracuse is listed as a 44.5 point underdog to No.1 Clemson this week, the largest point spread stacked against the Orange since 1983.

SU’s embarrassing loss to Liberty rings familiar to when change was in the air in another election year.

Syracuse lost to Akron at home in 2008, a stumble that sealed Greg Robinson’s fate as head coach and inspired ESPN’s College Game Day to do a feature on the fall of SU football.

With all due respect to all those eight-team College Football Playoff apologists out there, a better question applies to the 2020 college football season.

Who is the fourth-best team in the country? At this point, it's looking even more difficult to figure out a playoff with just four deserving teams.

Three spots are taken. No. 1 Clemson beat Georgia Tech 73-7 and looks primed for a sixth straight ACC championship. No. 2 Alabama knocked out No. 3 Georgia 41-24 and looks poised to the return to the top of the SEC after a strenuous one-year layoff from the Playoff. We're operating under the assumption that No. 5 Ohio State should be ranked No. 3 when they start a run at a fourth straight Big Ten championship next weekend.

The New York State Thruway’s cashless toll system will start sometime in November, according to Thruway officials.

An exact start date has not been set, spokeswoman Jennifer Givner said today.

But the $355 million system is completely built, she said. Now, Thruway officials are testing it to ensure tolls are charged at all ticketed parts of the 570-mile-long highway.

The start date will likely be a weekend night, she said, when fewer cars are on the road.

The cashless system will eliminate the need for paper toll tickets and toll booths. Instead, motorists will drive under gantries without needing to stop to pick up toll tickets or pay tolls, according to the Thruway.

Drivers with E-ZPass accounts will be billed as they are now.

Vehicles without E-ZPass tags will have their license plate image captured and a toll bill mailed to the registered owner.

But officials are encouraging people to sign up for E-ZPass. It will save you money.

Ask him again in the second quarter of Saturday's game.

Why do they say monthly bills? if you dont use the thruway very much it wont be monthly.

Why do they say monthly bills? if you dont use the thruway very much it wont be monthly.

Maybe they want to send you 1 bill at the end of the month instead of 1 bill every time you jump on the Thruway.

Also wonder how they plan on dealing with people during snow storms. Gonna be a lot of times we get no picture around here.
