Welcome
to National Candy Day!

You've been told again and again to not eat too much candy. However, today you can give in to your sweet tooth and eat as much as you want. Why? Because it's National Candy Day! Candy, confections which come in the form of bars, morsels, lozenges, and other figures, are usually eaten as a snack or treat and not during mealtime. They are made with sugar, syrup, or other sweet ingredients, and often contain chocolate, fruit, or nuts. Flour, eggs, milk, and natural and artificial flavorings are also commonly used to make candy.

Usually, sugar, or sucrose crystals, are dissolved into water to make candy. The duration of cooking and cooling of the sugar water, the heat it is cooked at, and the types of sweeteners, flavors, and other additives that are added determine the type of candy that is made. The hotter the sugar water becomes the more sugar can dissolve in it, and when the water begins to evaporate the syrup becomes highly concentrated. As it cools it becomes supersaturated with sugar. The sugar tries to recrystallize, but when it is cooled quickly it is prevented from doing so, and noncrystalline candies such as hard candy, lollipops, and caramel can be made. The adding of fructose and glucose can also help prevent crystallization.

Syracuse football has to slow down a legit Boston College passing attack (PS; Adler)

Syracuse football hosts a Boston College team this week whose passing attack is no joke.

This past weekend, Syracuse football lost its fourth-straight contest as Wake Forest destroyed the Orange inside the Carrier Dome. On the same day, the Orange’s next opponent, Boston College, gave No. 1 Clemson all it could handle before the Tigers squeaked out a 34-28 victory.

Yes, Clemson star quarterback Trevor Lawrence didn’t suit up versus the Eagles after recently testing positive for Covid-19. However, Boston College played extremely well in that Atlantic Coast Conference clash, and the ‘Cuse is in for a huge challenge this coming Saturday.

Syracuse football (1-6) will welcome the Eagles (4-3) to the Hill for a 2 pm kick-off on Saturday afternoon, with television coverage provided on various Regional Sports Networks.

At this juncture in the 2020 campaign, Boston College resides squarely in the middle of the pack within the Atlantic Coast Conference standings, and the Orange is in the basement.

Boston College, Syracuse going in opposite directions - National Football Post (nationalfootballpost.com; Staff)

Boston College and Syracuse have one thing in common this season: They both made No. 1-ranked Clemson sweat.

But beyond that, the Eagles and Orange are rivals headed in different directions and in different situations entering their game Saturday at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse.

Boston College (4-3, 3-3 ACC) nearly pulled off the upset of the season this past Saturday, leading Clemson by 15 points at halftime before succumbing 34-28.

First-year coach Jeff Hafley said as bad as he felt about losing, playing the top team in the country so close was an eye-opener for prospective recruits as he attempts to build a foundation for the program.

Hafley said he hopes it also can be a performance for this year’s team to build on the rest of this season.

“If you watch last week, that was our best tackling game,” Hafley said. “It was awesome. Those are good players. So can we do that again this week? Can we cover a little bit tighter this week? Are we going to be in the right place and not bust? Those are the little things we have to fix.”

Boston College has alternated wins and losses the past five weeks. Syracuse (1-6, 1-5) has lost four games in a row.

The two biggest problems for Syracuse have been defense and inconsistent quarterback play.

How did former Syracuse, CNY football players do in the NFL this week? (PS; $; Herbert)

Former Syracuse football punter Riley Dixon and his New York Giants blew a halftime lead over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday Night Football, falling to 1-7 on the season.

The Giants were up 14-3 at halftime but quarterback Tom Brady led the Bucs to a comeback, finishing on top 25-22 and improving to 6-2. Most reports have blamed QB Daniel Jones, who threw two interceptions in the second half, but Dixon also had his own issues punting into the wind Sunday.

Dixon’s two second-half punts were just 35 and 38 yards long, and both led to scores for Tampa Bay. Dixon kicked four punts for an average of 36 yards Sunday and is averaging 43.6 yards per punt this season, good for 28th in the league.

2020 Notre Dame Football: Clemson Tigers Week (onefootdown.com; Staff)

No giant preamble is needed for this game — we’ve already done that over the past 10 months. Notre Dame was scheduled to play Clemson before the big changes due to the coronavirus pandemic, and if they weren’t, Clemson is one of those measuring stick programs for Irish fans.

We know them very, very well.

This will be the 3rd time in 6 years that these two programs will have played against one another, and the first two were as significant as any two game the Irish have played during that time — and also extremely important to Clemson as well. The 2015 game really catapulted the Tigers onto the national scene, and the 2018 game was a playoff win that ultimately led them to a national championship.

And here we are with another big game.

College football conference power rankings: Big Ten slumps, ACC surges (fansided.com; Buhler)

The Big Ten has taken a big step back this year as the ACC has been vastly improved, thanks in large part due to the inclusion of Notre Dame.

All five Power 5 conferences are playing games this weekend in major college football. Not since the bowl season have we had all five Power 5 conferences in action on the gridiron. With the triumphant return of the Pac-12, hopefully, the entire country is a bit more engaged in this thrilling college season. Going conference-only has led to so many exciting games, but it has made the College Football Playoff picture even more jumbled than normal. Here is to a great November.

College football conference power rankings through Week 9

5 BIG 12 CONFERENCE

Four Ranked Teams Best Team: Oklahoma State Cowboys (No. 14)

Even though the Big 12 has four teams ranked inside of the latest AP Top 25, they are the only Power 5 conference we can safely cross off from getting a team into the College Football Playoff. Thanks to the Oklahoma State Cowboys falling at home to the Texas Longhorns, there are no undefeated teams left in the Big 12. Oklahoma State needed to go undefeated to get in.

While the Big 12 has a handful of quality teams besides Oklahoma State and Texas, including the Oklahoma Sooners and the Iowa State Cyclones, it does not have the benefit of the doubt anymore to get a team in. Every team but Oklahoma State has lost at least twice. Sadly, the winner of the Big 12 Championship game in Arlington will have to settle for a Cotton Bowl Classic invitation.

4 PAC-12 CONFERENCE

Two Ranked Teams Best Team: Oregon Ducks (No. 12)
With the Pac-12 set to play ball for the first time this season this weekend, we will finally get to see what its top teams have to offer. Though the Pac-12 only has two ranked teams in the latest AP Poll, the Oregon Ducks are capable of making the playoff if they go undefeated. The only other team that has a semi-realistic shot of getting in is the other ranked team in the USC Trojans.

While the Pac-12 has a few other teams to keep an eye on, such as the Arizona State Sun Devils, the California Golden Bears and the Utah Utes, this really feels like a two-team race for conference supremacy. What the Pac-12 needs is for the Ducks and the Trojans to play fantastic out of the gate. If it happens or it happens for one of those teams, maybe they have a snowball’s chance?

3 BIG TEN CONFERENCE

Four Ranked Teams Best Team: Ohio State Buckeyes (No. 3)

The Big Ten is in a tough spot already only two weeks in. While they have four ranked teams, only one of them has a great shot of getting into the playoff. Fortunately for the Big Ten, that team is the juggernaut Ohio State Buckeyes, who may not lose a game all season. When your second-best team in the Wisconsin Badgers are dealing with a coronavirus outbreak, the league has problems.

The two other teams that find themselves in the latest AP Poll are the Indiana Hoosiers and the Michigan Wolverines. While Indiana is a surprising 2-0, Michigan is 1-1 after a bad loss to the Michigan State Spartans. Fate would have it the Hoosiers and the Wolverines play each other on Saturday for the right to be the second-best team in the Big Ten East after obviously Ohio State.

2 ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE
Three Ranked Teams Best Team: Clemson Tigers (No. 1)

Despite having the best team in the country in the Clemson Tigers, they will be without their star quarterback Trevor Lawrence for a second consecutive week after testing positive for the coronavirus. His backup D.J. Uiagalelei played well vs. the Boston College Eagles last week at home. Looks like he will have to do it again vs. the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on the road.

Yes, this will be the featured game this week between the No. 1 and No. 4 teams in the land. No doubt the Tigers and the Irish are two of the very best

1 SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE

Five Ranked Teams Best Team: Alabama Crimson Tide (No. 2)

With four teams ranked inside of the top 10, the SEC holds onto its No. 1 overall ranking for yet another week. Though teams like the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Texas A&M Aggies will presumably stay in the top 10, the loser between the Florida Gators and the Georgia Bulldogs will drop into the teens with their second defeat of the season. The winner wins the SEC East in 2020.

Once you get past the top four teams in the SEC, things get a little dicey. Sure, the Auburn Tigers are 4-2 and cracking the top 25, but nobody outside of Auburn, Alabama thinks they are anything special this year. While cannibalization has impacted every Power 5 conference this year, it has not negatively impacted the SEC as badly as it has in other leagues. The SEC remains the top dog.

For the ACC to claim the top spot, Georgia and Texas A&M will need to lose and fall out of the top 10. Florida will move up, but that won’t be enough. What needs to happen is for Notre Dame to beat Clemson in South Bend. The Tigers won’t fall further than fourth, while the Irish would move up, probably to No. 2 behind only Alabama. As we’ve seen thus far, anything can happen this year.

Will the SEC be able to stay atop the conference power rankings through Week 10?

PSN's Alan Saunders Talks Paris Ford, Pitt Football On ACC Network (pittsburghsportsnow.com; Vukovcan)

The big story of the day on Monday continues to get plenty of attention not only in Pittsburgh but across the country.

As Pittsburgh Sports Now first reported on Monday, Paris Ford has made the decision to leave Pitt with four games to play in order to not risk his health and to prepare for the 2021 NFL Draft. Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi confirmed this report later in the day during his weekly press conference.

This news comes in the midst of Pitt going through a four-game losing streak and an upcoming game at Florida State.

Pittsburgh Sports Now‘s Alan Saunders talked about this more this morning as a guest this morning on the national program Packer and Durham on the ACC Network

Gene Corrigan, the ACC, and Notre Dame (RX; HM)

Gene Corrigan, the ACC, and Notre Dame

From "Gene Corrigan Talks Conference Expansion" posted on SouthernPigskin.com:

Former ACC commissioner Gene Corrigan... gave his take on conference expansion, including his thoughts on Notre Dame joining the ACC... Corrigan's tenure in South Bend coincided with the last great Irish run of dominance...

“'It’s really hard for [Notre Dame] and the athletic director there to change what has been there forever, an independent football program that plays all over the country,” Corrigan said. “To change that would be a major move... The ACC would be great for Notre Dame, but it’s hard for them to let go of the football thing,” Corrigan said. “...They would be perfect in the ACC. This is who they are.'”
Why does Notre Dame fit better in the ACC than in, say, the Big Ten or the Big XII? (I think we can all agree that the SEC is not a good cultural fit and the Pac-12 is simply too far away). Here are some reasons why the ACC is the best conference home for the Fighting Irish...

1. East Coast Bias
Notre Dame has made it clear for some time that they want and need exposure on the East Coast. The ACC delivers that like no other conference can, with member institutions in Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. That only leaves two states with power five teams - New Jersey and Maryland, which happen to be the only two represented in the Big Ten. Eight to two isn't even close enough to discuss (by the way, the SEC has teams in three East Coast states).

Pizza in Camillus: Toss & Fire opens, Twin Trees on the way (PS; $; Cazentre)

If pizza is your thing, and you’re anywhere near Camillus, you’re in luck.

Toss & Fire is open. Twin Trees is coming.

Toss & Fire Wood-Fired Pizza opened its second brick-and-mortar location this week in Township 5, in the space near the Movie Tavern occupied until the early summer by the now-closed Mesa Grande.

Toss & Fire started as a food truck in 2015 and expanded to a restaurant in North Syracuse in 2016. As the name implies, its centerpiece is a brick-lined, wood-fired pizza oven. It features both Neapolitan and New York-style pizzas, along with a beer and wine list that emphasizes New York products.

The menu is similar to the North Syracuse shop, with one major difference for now: Owner Nick Sanford is using the Camillus shop to test “Detroit style” pizzas, with a thick layer of ingredients and a caramelized cheese crust.

“It’s our version of Detroit, with a thick, chewy, cheesy and crunchy crust,” Sanford said.
