Welcome to Early National Letter of Intent Day!

The National Letter of Intent (NLI) is a document used to indicate a student athlete's commitment to participating in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) colleges and universities in the United States. The NCAA Eligibility Center manages the daily operations of the NLI program while the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA) provides governance oversight of the program. Started in 1964 with seven conferences and eight independent institutions, the program now includes 676 Division I and II participating institutions. There are designated dates for different sports, and these dates are commonly referred to as "Signing Days".

Division III institutions are specifically banned from using the NLI, or any similar document that is not executed by non-athletes at those institutions.[1]

NLIs are typically faxed by the recruited student to the university's athletic department on a National Signing Day.[2] The NLI is a voluntary program with regard to both institutions and student-athletes. No prospective student-athlete or parent is required to sign the National Letter of Intent, and no institution is required to join the program.

Syracuse football: What to expect on early National Signing Day (247sports.com; Bailey)

Syracuse football is gearing up to sign the majority of its 2021 recruiting class on Wednesday. Since its inception in 2017, the early signing period has become the primary time for prospects to ink binding national letters of intent. For the Orange, this year will be no different.

SU is expected to sign 20 of the 21 players who are committed to the program this cycle. Only Rochester defensive lineman Jaelin Moss intends to sign in February. He told 247Sports previously that he's still "set on" Syracuse.

Orange fans should expect to wake up to NLIs beginning to roll in. We'll have a live updates page up and running as well as coverage from head coach Dino Babers' virtual press conference at 1 p.m. And for national coverage, be sure to tune into CBS Sports HQ, where our National Signing Day special will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

While there are no SU targets set to announce decisions on Wednesday, National Signing Days are known to provide the occasional surprise.

Here's the full list of players expected to sign with Syracuse:

CB Duce Chestnut (enrolling early)
OT Enrique Cruz
OL Kalan Ellis
S Malcolm Folk (enrolling early)

Axe: Is SU football's new class ready to help turn things around? (PS; $; Axe)

Syracuse football head coach Dino Babers has said on a number of occasions that the best thing about freshman is they eventually become sophomores.

Babers may want to hold off on rehashing that line when he formally introduces a stock of about 20 incoming freshman for the Class of 2021 on the first day of the early signing period Wednesday afternoon.

72 percent of the Syracuse football roster that traveled to South Bend to face Notre Dame in the 2020 season finale on Dec. 5 were freshman or sophomores.

That was due to a freakish amount of injuries, opt-outs and a sprinkle of 2020′s nonsense.

While the chances are low of his roster being decimated to that level again in 2021, Babers needs to keep his options open.

Who among the Class of 2021 can make an instant impact for the Orange?

Is quarterback Justin Lamson, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound dual-threat from California who has a splash of Eric Dungey in his game, ready to compete for the starting QB job right away?

Will running back Josh Hough, who finished his high school career with 4,139 yards on 379 carries, form a power combo with Sean Tucker, SU’s breakout star in 2020?

Syracuse Footballer Jonathan Returning for "Revenge Tour" (spectrumlocalnews.com; Larson)

Syracuse football coach Dino Babers will bring back at least half of his veteran defensive line next season with Kingsley Jonathan's announcement on social media Tuesday night that he'll be back in 2021.

— Kingsley Jonathan ♕ (@Kingg_J1) December 15, 2020

Jonathan, like linemate Josh Black, who announced his intentions to return last week, is taking advantage of an NCAA ruling allowing athletes an additional year of eligibility during the pandemic. He had three QB sacks, tops among SU defensive linemen, and also had 5.5 tackles for a loss.

“I am hungry and ready to lead my team back to victory,” Jonathan said in a Twitter post. “I thank God for this opportunity and can’t wait to take advantage of this year to come out a better player and man.”

The native of Nigeria is not only one of SU's top players, he's also one of the team's most vocal leaders, and is known for excelling on and off the field. Jonathan has been a representative on multiple ACC committees, and he's been on the Syracuse honor roll in every semester of his academic career.

Clemson Football: Tigers aren’t going to just barrel over Notre Dame (rubbingtherock.com; Spencer)

for gbo

Clemson football set up for major matchup against Notre Dame Fighting Irish

The Clemson football team will take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a blockbuster matchup this Saturday for the ACC Championship.

The Tigers fell to the Irish in double-overtime earlier this season in South Bend without the services of Trevor Lawrence and several defensive starters, but will now be looking to avenge that loss with its roster back intact.

Clemson football enters this game a 10-point favorite and there’s no doubt that the Tigers should be the favorite, but many fans are going to be disappointed if they tune in with unrealistic expectations.

Clemson football isn’t going to just barrel through Notre Dame

There’s no doubt that Clemson should be favored in this matchup. The Tigers are the more talented team and they have the ability to win this one, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy or that we’re going to see a blowout.

Notre Dame’s win in early November wasn’t a fluke.

Yes, the Irish took advantage of a depleted defense, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t capable of playing at a high level again.

Notre Dame found comfortable home in ACC during time of need. Will the Irish stay? (greenvilleonline.com; Shanesy)

It took a pandemic for Notre Dame football to give up its independence.

COVID-19 made it seemingly impossible for the Irish to play this season other than to join the Atlantic Coast Conference, of which they have played full schedules in in everything but football. Continuing as an independent in 2020 was begging for disaster, opponents surely to drop off and leave one of the best Notre Dame teams with too many gaps in the resume to make the College Football Playoffs.

The argument against Notre Dame being higher in national rankings and in better position for the playoffs since the system began in 2014 was that the Irish don’t have to win a conference championship. Interestingly enough, the year they finally join is the year in which they didn’t need to play a game like Saturday’s 4 p.m. rematch with Clemson at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.

Notre Dame (10-0) is ranked No. 2 with a win already against Clemson (9-1) and is in perfect position for a national semifinals game on Jan. 1.

Meet Clemson's key players vs. Notre Dame:Trevor Lawrence

“What a magical year they’ve had,” Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said. “Just a great football team. A complete team in every sense.”

Notre Dame football and the ACC was a forced marriage. But there was already some flirting and five scheduled dates per year. Could it end up being a long relationship of happiness?

“You can talk all you want about being in a conference,” Irish coach Brian Kelly said. “But if you’re not in the ACC, and weren’t, just dipping our toe into it, you can’t really talk first-hand about it. We can now. It’s offered us a different perspective. There’s no doubt about it.”

ACC was fun for Notre Dame football, but Independence returns in 2021 (slapthesign.com; Morrison)

The Notre Dame football team dominated ACC play in 2020, but a return to their Independent ways will return for the 2021 season and beyond.

For Notre Dame football, it will be one season in a conference and one trip to a conference championship game. Not too bad. After all, there’s plenty of programs that have been in a conference for decades and never won, or even made a conference championship game.

Still, hopefully, this first season is the last one for Notre Dame in a conference. After all, it took a worldwide pandemic to force the Irish into a conference for the 2020 season.

Of course, it is out of a proud tradition that Notre Dame has remained Independent for so long. They’ve done so in the face of criticism from the majority, who feel that the Irish need to join a conference to fit the mold of most modern college football programs. This season has even proved that being in the ACC full-time would be the easier option.

Syracuse restaurant makes return TV appearance as a Food Network favorite (PS; $; Cazentre)

Any restaurant could use a jolt of positive news while facing the challenges of Covid times. Pastabilities in Armory Square just got one.

It will be featured Friday in a return appearance on the Food Network with Guy Fieri of “Diners, Drive-in and Dives.”

The episode, which airs at 9 p.m. Friday, is part of a spin-off series called “America’s Favorites” for which Fieri and his son, Hunter, asked viewers to use videos to nominate their favorites from past “Triple D” episodes.

The family of David and Erin Hertweck of Liverpool nominated Pastabilities, at 311 S. Franklin St.

They sent Fieri a video (see below) in which their daughters, Lilia and Caraline, proclaim their love of Pasta’s famous Spicy Hot Tomato Oil. The “Hot Tom” was featured in the original “Triple D” segment on Pasta’s, which first aired on Dec, 17, 2012.

“One of the best things about living in Syracuse is a restaurant, our favorite, called Pastabilities,” Lilia Hertweck says in the video. They mention their favorite dishes: spaghetti and meatballs for Caraline and fettucine alfredo for Lilia.

Then Lilia pulls out a jar.

“But you know what my family all loves: Spicy Hot Tomato Oil!,” she says.

The girls, despite their young age, are fans of spicy food, their mother, Erin Hertweck, said. That may be due to the fact that David’s ancestry is part Korean.
