Welcome to Cigarettes are Hazardous to Your Health Day!

Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States.
  • Cigarette smoking causes more than 480,000 deaths each year in the United States. This is nearly one in five deaths.
  • Smoking causes more deaths each year than the following causes combined:
    • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
    • Illegal drug use
    • Alcohol use

Monday Musings: Familiar Name Enters Transfer Portal (SI; McAllister)

1. PATRICE RENE IS IN THE TRANSFER PORTAL

Former Syracuse recruiting target Patrice Rene is in the transfer portal. Rene is a cornerback originally from Canada and was recruited by the Orange in the 2016 cycle. He signed with North Carolina over Syracuse and others including Penn State, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Wisconsin and Tennessee. Rene played in 11 games, starting five, as a true freshman, played in 11 as a sophomore and started 11 as a junior. In 2019, North Carolina changed their coaching staff, and Rene suffered a season ending injury just two games into the season. This past year, he was not quite fully recovered, but still appeared in nine games. He will be a graduate transfer and immediately eligible.

This makes a ton of sense for Syracuse to look into, as Rene is built similarly to Ifeatu Melifonwu and has starting experience in the ACC. A tall, long corner who is extremely athletic, Rene's skill set would be a good fit in the 3-3-5. The understanding is that Syracuse is expected to look into Rene and his situation. If the medical evaluation comes back clean, do not be surprised if Syracuse is involved.

2. DELAY OF SPRING SEMESTER PUTS SYRACUSE FOOTBALL'S RETURN DATE UP IN THE AIR

Syracuse University pushed the start of its spring semester back to February 8th. That means when players, including early enrollees, can arrive is a bit up in the air. Syracuse is working with the county in order to make sure everyone is on the same page, but there is not a specific date yet on when players are set to start arriving on campus. Typically players do arrive at least a week or two before classes start in order to start lifting and working out. One would think that means players will be able to join campus within the next couple of weeks, but the exact date is still to be determined.

Darien Rencher Announces He Will Return to Clemson in 2021 (SI; Priester)

for gbo

Darien Rencher announced on Sunday that he will in fact return to Clemson for one more season.

The 2020 Disney Spirit Award winner, who originally joined the program as a walk-on, announced the decision on Twitter with the caption "One More Year."

Rencher's return is not only an instant boost to a running back room that is already losing the ACC's all-time career leader in rushing Travis Etienne, but it also means the Tigers will get back one of its most respected members of the locker room. His leadership abilities are an invaluable asset.

During the 2020 season Rencher appeared in all 12 games and carried the ball 24 times for 140 yards. His lone touchdown of the season came on a 50-yard run against Virginia Tech in the regular season finale.

Making the Grade: Clemson’s QBs had an excellent year (theclemsoninsider.com; Vandervort)

The 2020 football season was the most prolific passing year ever by a Clemson Football team.

Led by Heisman Trophy runner-up Trevor Lawrence, Clemson set a team record by averaging 348.5 yards per game through the air, which ranks sixth nationally. Clemson quarterbacks completed 66.5 percent of their 490 passes and just six of those attempts were intercepted.

They completed 31 touchdown passes, while throwing for 4,182 yards.

Projected by many to be the first overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft, Lawrence led Clemson to a sixth straight ACC Championship this season, while throwing for 3,153 yards and 24 touchdowns with just five interceptions. He completed 69.2 percent of his 334 passes. He averaged a Clemson record 315.3 yards per game through the air in 2020 and ran for eight touchdowns as well.

Lawrence was named the ACC Player of the Year in 2020, joining Steve Fuller (1977 and 1978), Tajh Boyd (2012) and Deshaun Watson (2015) as he only Clemson quarterbacks to win the award. Lawrence was the runner-up in the Heisman Trophy race in 2020 as well, joining Watson (2016) as the only players in Clemson history to finish second for the prestigious award.

Notre Dame Football: 2021 schedule has plenty of intriguing storylines (slapthesign.com; Weiss)

The 2021 Notre Dame football team has a tough 2021 schedule, but one back-to-back stretch holds plenty of intriguing storylines.

Looking back, the 2020 college football season was one of the more interesting in history, as schools had to battle through the COVID-19 pandemic, which wreaked havoc on schedules, availability, and health. The Notre Dame football team had to join a conference just to get a full slate of games in, and they did so in an impressive fashion.

The Irish steamrolled through the ACC, clinching a spot in the ACC Championship Game against Clemson, a team they beat during the regular season. Unfortunately, the Irish would not only lose against Clemson in blowout fashion but would not put up much of a fight against Alabama in the College Football Playoff, ending their season with two straight losses.

Still, it was a year that was filled with incredible storylines, as we saw Brian Kelly get his 100th win at Notre Dame, and Ian Book become the all-time winningest quarterback in school history. Guys like Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, Aaron Banks, Kyle Hamilton, and Liam Eichenberg got All-American nods, and overall, you would have to say it was a successful 2020 campaign.

In 2021, the Irish have intriguing matchups in their schedule as well, including a two-week stretch that is loaded with storylines.

Jack Coan takes on the Wisconsin Badgers inside Soldier Field

Notre Dame football opens up on the road against Florida State, and at that time, we will know who the Irish plans to start at quarterback this season. One of the bigger offseason storylines is going to revolve around who takes over for Book, whether it be graduate transfer Jack Coan, holdovers Drew Pyne and Brendon Clark, or a true freshman in Tyler Buchner.

History would suggest that it will be Coan who gets the nod to start, and in what would be his fourth start for the Irish, he would be taking on his former team in the Wisconsin Badgers. During the 2019 college football season, Coan led the Badgers to a 10-4 record in his 14 starts, earning a spot in the Big Ten title game, where they would lose to Ohio State.

Unfortunately, a foot injury cause Coan to miss the 2020 season, and with Graham Mertz engrained as the starter for the Badgers, there was no way he was going to start in 2021. Coan decided to transfer, landing on the Irish, and will have an opportunity to beat his former team on September 25.

The game against Wisconsin is not only big for the program, as Wisconsin is always a solid team, but it will be huge for Coan, who would like nothing more than to show his former school what they lost when he transferred. This matchup will take place inside Soldier Field, giving the storyline a little more intrigue as well.

Marcus Freeman takes on his old team, Cincinnati

The Notre Dame football program hit an absolute home run already this offseason, as they landed their No. 1 target for the vacant defensive coordinator position. The position was left vacant by Clark Lea, who took the head coaching job at Vanderbilt, a promotion he more than deserved after the job he did in South Bend.

What’s the worst part about Syracuse bars being closed right now? (poll) (PS; $; Miller)

What’s the worst part about Syracuse bars being closed right now? (poll) - syracuse.com
Saturday would have been a perfect storm in Syracuse: We have the Buffalo Bills playing Indianapolis in the first round of the NFL playoffs at 1 p.m., and then we’ve got the SU-Georgetown basketball game at 7 p.m.

It’s every bar-owner’s dream. Pubs would be jammed with fans watching the games, ordering food and drinks and maybe putting money down on Super Bowl boards (Oh wait, that’s illegal in New York. Scratch that.).

But this year, bars in the city are closed because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Most restaurants and taverns in the city limits fall within the state-designated Orange zone, meaning they can’t serve food and drinks inside. So Tipperary Hill will be silent, and downtown will be empty. The SU Hill will also be empty since fans can’t attend the game in the Dome, let alone grab pizza and beer at the Varsity.

We’ll have to stay at home and watch sports, maybe eat homemade nachos and drink beer out of a can. Or we can visit a tavern lucky enough to fall in a Yellow zone. We’ll just have to make sure no more than four people sit at a table, or we can sit at the bar next to a Plexiglas partition.
