Welcome to National Geographic Day!

The National Geographic Society was incorporated in Washington, D.C. on today's date in 1888, by a group of 33 scientists, scholars, businessmen, and explorers who had a passion for geography, science, and travel, and who believed Americans were taking more of an interest in the outside world at the time. Its founding goal was for "the increase and diffusion of geographical knowledge." Today it is one of the largest and most inclusive organizations in the world.

Nine months after the society got its start, National Geographic Magazine—now named National Geographic—began being printed. The society's 165 charter members received it—at the time, one had to be a member of the society in order to receive the magazine. Almost unrecognizable compared to the National Geographic of today, the magazine was a scholarly journal and had few photographs.

ACC’s 2021 football schedule won’t take 2020 games into account (ajc.com; Sugiura)

If true, this is a change from what was initially reported, where the ACC would take steps to prevent a team from playing another team 3 seasons in a row at the same venue. I think this impacts Syracuse in at least 2 ways: the BC game will be played in Syracuse for the third year in a row and Syracuse will be asked to travel to Louisville for the 3rd year in a row.

When the ACC created its modified schedule for 2020, the conference kept some division rivalries in place for each team’s slate of games, but also made adjustments for travel considerations.

It was a one-off season and schedule, and in making the 2021 schedule that will be released Thursday, it was treated in that manner, according to a person familiar with the process. Hence, the opponents and locations of games have been arranged for the 2021 season in accordance with the longstanding model and without regard for which teams played where in 2020.

As such, for the third consecutive year, Pittsburgh will visit Tech, and the Yellow Jackets will be scheduled to play at Miami in Coastal Division matchups. (The 2020 Tech-Miami game was not played, as Tech called off what would have been the season-ending game because of health and safety concerns.) Also, Boston College, an Atlantic Division team that the Jackets played on the road in 2020, still will come to Tech this fall as the cross-division rotational opponent.

Pitt-Tech and Tech-Miami were two of eight conference games that were played in 2020 (or scheduled to be played) at the same location as in 2019. While sending one team to another’s stadium for three consecutive seasons is not the most equitable solution, rearranging eight series while maintaining each team’s home-road balance likely would be a logistical tangle.

Besides Pitt and Boston College, Tech will play North Carolina and Virginia Tech at home. The ACC road opponents besides Miami are Clemson, Duke and Virginia. Of Tech’s six Coastal Division opponents, the Jackets did not play North Carolina, Virginia and Virginia Tech last year (along with Miami).

BC's 2021 Football Schedule Will Not Take Into Account 2020 Games (SI; Black)

The ACC is set to release their 2021 conference schedule on Thursday. According to Ken Sugiura of the AJC, last season's game will not impact this year's schedule. Per his article:

It was a one-off season and schedule, and in making the 2021 schedule that will be released Thursday, it was treated in that manner, according to a person familiar with the process. Hence, the opponents and locations of games have been arranged for the 2021 season in accordance with the longstanding model and without regard for which teams played where in 2020.
For Boston College that means they will indeed have to head to Death Valley for a third straight year to face Clemson. Their cross divisional game will be against Georgia Tech in Atlanta, even though they played in 2020.

The Eagles will most likely have a six game home schedule that includes games against Florida State, NC State, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. They also have out of conference home games against Missouri and most likely the final out of conference game that has yet to be scheduled.

On the road Boston College will face off against UMass at Gillette Stadium to kick off the season, and also will head to Lincoln Financial Stadium to play Temple. In their conference schedule they will play the aforementioned Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Clemson Tigers, Louisville and also head to the Carrier Dome for their third straight road game against Syracuse.

Stay tuned to BC Bulletin for more news about the upcoming schedule.

Ten questions facing ACC teams in 2021 (247sports.com; Nivison)

As is the case with every new football season, 2021 will bring some questions. That’s especially the case following a COVID-shortened 2020 season that will make projecting this year even more difficult.

No team in the country is exempt from some facing some questions heading into this season, and we’re taking a look at the biggest ones in the ACC today. There are always key players who need to be replaced, coaches who need to prove something, and fresh faces looking to make an impact.

When the 2021 season kicks off within the conference, here are 10 questions that need answering in the ACC.

GEORGIA TECH YELLOW JACKETS | TAKING THE NEXT STEP

To this point, it looks like Geoff Collins has done a nice job of rebranding the Georgia Tech program and starting the rebuild in Atlanta. The Yellow Jackets’ 2020 signing class was a good one, and the team won three conference games in a shortened season last fall. However, six of Georgia Tech’s seven losses came by at least 14 points. Can Georgia tech be more competitive from start to finish in the 2021 season?

SYRACUSE ORANGE | COURSE CORRECTION

(Photo: USA TODAY Sports)

In each of Dino Babers’ first two seasons with the program, the Orange won four games. In his third year as head coach, Syracuse took a big step forward and went 10-3. After that, things have come back down to Earth in a hurry. The Orange went 5-7 in 2019, and they won just one game in 2020. Babers is now 24-36 at Syracuse, so he may be feeling some pressure to get things back on track this year.

10 college football teams that can crack the top 25 and make some noise in 2021 (cbssports.com; Dodd)

Sometimes the top 25 just isn't big enough. With the last season in the books and attention being turned towards recruiting and spring practice ahead of the 2021 college football campaign, everyone wants to know which teams may be able to make the proverbial jump in the upcoming season. What follows are 10 teams outside of those way-too-early rankings that may do just that.

You'll see teams that barely played enough games to be noticed, a Conference USA power and two teams each from the ACC, Big Ten and SEC chasing the superpowers in those conferences. Two of those aforementioned teams have new coaches, while three have recently played for conference championships.

What's for sure is few of these 10 are going away. Half of them were ranked for at least one week last season in the AP Top 25. In alphabetical order, here are 10 teams that should be on the cusp of the top 25 once the 2021 season begins eight months from now.

1https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/teams/ARIZST/arizona-state-sun-devils/

Arizona St.
The sample size wasn't great in 2020 (four games), but the Sun Devils continue trending upward. Quarterback Jayden Daniels potentially has three more years of eligibility having led the Pac-12's best offense. Again, small sample size, but the 40.3 points per game were the program's most since 1996. The top 16 tacklers return on defense. In a full season, Arizona State was supposed to contend for the Pac-12. Back to a full season in '21, the Sun Devils should be an eight-win team.
2https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/teams/AUBURN/auburn-tigers/

Auburn
The Tigers offense will be more productive. Bank on it. New coach Bryan Harsin is a quarterback maker. He will coach up Bo Nix or go out to the transfer portal to get a new signal caller. The quality of the SEC demands it. Alabama and Georgia come to Jordan-Hare Stadium. The swing game may Sept 18 at Penn State.
3https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/teams/BOISE/boise-state-broncos/

Boise St.
The quick addition of Andy Avalos adds hope that the Boise State run will continue. The Oregon defensive coordinator who replaced Harsin is a first-time head coach but a former All-WAC linebacker for the Broncos knows the territory. He also has an experienced quarterback, Hank Bachmeier. The Broncos have a nonconference schedule tough enough to make a New Year's Six run … if Boise can beat Oklahoma State and win at BYU and UCF.
4https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/teams/BC/boston-college-eagles/

Boston College
Jeff Hafley won six games in his rookie season as coach. Phil Jurkovec will be one of the top ACC quarterbacks. He'll have Zay Flowers (892 yards receiving, nine touchdowns) as a main target. The defense went from the ACC basement to middle of the pack cutting off more than 60 yards per game. Hafley has already hit the transfer portal for Florida State defensive back Jaiden Lars-Woodbey, a one-time freshman All-American, and Temple linebacker Isaiah Graham-Mobley.
5https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/teams/NEVADA/nevada-wolf-pack/

Nevada
Like Boise, Nevada as a schedule good enough to get the Wolf Pack to a New Year's Six bowl with games against Cal and Kansas State. There are Mountain West trips to Boise and San Diego State. That's a lot to ask but there's also a lot of upside in winning those games. Coach Jay Norvell has put himself in position for a Power Five job winning 10 of his last 14 (7-2 in 2020). Carson Strong led the league in passing yards (2,858) and touchdown tosses (27).
6https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/teams/NWEST/northwestern-wildcats/

Northwestern
Pat Fitzgerald got a huge boost landing South Carolina transfer Ryan Hilinski. The veteran quarterback on his third school walks into a program that has played for the Big Ten title in two of the last three seasons. The defense lost longtime coordinator Mike Hankwitz, who retired. The future is bright with CBS Sports All-America freshman defensive back Brandon Joseph tying for the national lead with six interceptions in 2020.
7https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/teams/MISS/ole-miss-rebels/

Ole Miss
The Rebels are Alabama Jr. Make that really junior in that they can outscore teams. Sometimes. Lane Kiffin proved he had the offense in 2020 with his unit averaging almost 40 points. The core of that unit returns: quarterback Matt Corral and running back Jerrion Ealy. Ole Miss tied for the most points scored on Bama (48) since the 2019 national title game. Meanwhile, the defense was dreadful. Ole Miss is going to have to win a lot of shootouts. It might win enough to squeeze into the top 25.
8https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/teams/PSU/penn-state-nittany-lions/

Penn St.
The 2021 season will decide whether 2020 is a hiccup or a trend. For the first time since 2015, the Nittany Lions did not win nine games. Not even close. The good: Penn State won its last four. The bad: It started 0-5. The defense gave up 28 sacks and there was a -8 turnover margin. New offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich replaced Kirk Ciarrocca after the offense slumped, too. Here's hoping QB Sean Clifford gets more protection and high-upside RB Noah Cain returns from a season-ending injury.
9https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/teams/UAB/uab-blazers/

UAB
Bill Clark's amazing story continues. The Blazers have played for the last three Conference USA championships, winning two. They're loaded again opening new Progressive Stadium this fall with 17 returning starters. Four of those are returning all-conference performers. The Blazers are well rested for a 2021 run. They went 42 days without playing before the CUSA Championship Game.
10https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/teams/WASH/washington-huskies/

Washington
Jimmy Lake had an impressive rookie season as a coach. Too bad it was hard to notice. The Huskies finished 3-1 after COVID-19 ended their season prior to the Pac-12 Championship Game. The secondary has to be reconfigured after the loss of starters Elijah Molden and Keith Taylor. An interesting quarterback battle begins in the spring with five-star freshman Sam Huard going against Colorado State transfer Patrick O'Brien.

Tennessee football: Tony Elliott would be solid, possibly splash hire (allfortennessee.com; Calhoun)

Honest question. Outside of his lack of head coaching experience, what would be the drawback to Tony Elliott being hired as the next Tennessee football head coach? As an assistant very few coaches have his track record.

Dabo Swinney named Elliott the Clemson Tigers’ co-offensive coordinator in 2015. They have won the ACC Championship and played in the College Football Playoff every year since then, winning two national championships in the process. Before Elliott’s promotion, Clemson hadn’t had a top five finish since they won their national title under Danny Ford in 1981.

That alone shows that Elliott must have some value, and there was no drop-off this past year when he became the full-time offensive coordinator. Just looking at those facts, Tennessee football could do a lot worse. There’s a reason Elliott won the Broyles Award for the nation’s top assistant in 2017.

When it comes to a coach like Elliott, we also have to look at who the Vols can and should go after right now. Fans may want a home run hire. Well, the fact of the matter is the school is just not attractive enough for a home run hire.

At this moment, Tennessee football has had two top 25 finishes in 13 years. The Vols have’t won an SEC title in 22 years, they haven’t finished in the top 10 in 19 years, and they have finished seven of the last 13 years with a losing record.

Report: Maryland WR coach Joker Phillips taking job with ACC program (saturdaytradition.com; Shutte)

George McDonald's replacement has been hired...

Mike Locksley is losing a member of his offensive staff at Maryland.

Matt Zenitz of AL.com reported that N.C. State will hire Terrapins wide receivers coach Joker Phillips for the same job with the Wolfpack. Phillips has been at Maryland for the past two seasons, serving as the wide receivers coach and co-offensive coordinator.

Phillips will take over 30 years of coaching experience with him to N.C. State.

From @jtalty and me: NC State is expected to hire Joker Phillips as wide receivers coach, per sources.
The former Kentucky head coach was Maryland’s co-OC and wide receivers coach the last two seasons.
— Matt Zenitz (@mzenitz) January 26, 2021

Before taking a role on Locksley’s staff, Phillips was the head coach at Kentucky from 2010-12. Since then, he’s had stops at Florida, Ohio State and Cincinnati at the college level, as well as a short stint with the NFL’s Cleveland Browns.

Prior to being named the Wildcats head coach, Phillips had been an assistant coach at Kentucky, Cincinnati, Minnesota, Notre Dame and South Carolina.

N.C. State finished the 2020 season with an 8-4 record. Maryland was 2-3.

2021 Neutral Site Games (RX; HM)

2021 Neutral Site Games

There are 21 college football games scheduled to be played at neutral sites during the 2021 regular season. Of those, only four will involve an ACC team, while one other involves Notre Dame.
Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, GA

Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA will lay claim to the title of college football capitol of the world by hosting a trio of P5 games. Meanwhile, the Arlington/Dallas, TX metro area will host five neutral site games in 2021 in three different stadiums. Three of those are P5-vs-P5 games. Charlotte, NC - home of the ACC Championship Game - will also host a pair of these match-ups on opening weekend, with Georgia vs. Clemson as the headliner.
The other neutral site games are scattered far and wide, including one in Ireland. I mean, what would college football season be without Nebraska vs. Illinois in Dublin, right?
Here's the complete list of games*:

With the spark of a idea, Crouse-Hinds delivers electricity to the world - syracuse.com
There are few things that we take for granted as much as electricity. A force so powerful, yet, paradoxically, so prosaic, much like indoor plumbing and running water, it is difficult for most to imagine a world where it does not exist. One could safely argue that in 2021, electricity is as necessary as oxygen to Americans’ daily existence. Without it, society as we know it would cease to function.

However, when Huntington B. Crouse and Jesse L. Hinds signed the partnership papers forming Crouse-Hinds Electric Company on January 18, 1897, electricity was an upstart, disruptive, technology. Edison’s Pearl Street Power Plant, in New York City, went online in 1882. George Westinghouse formed Westinghouse Electric Company, in 1886. In this era of incredible change, there was widespread anxiety about the effects of electrical current “flying” through the air (akin to the public concerns about 5G technology today). Part of this public misunderstanding was the direct result of a campaign waged by Edison, the father of direct current (DC) against his former employee, Nikola Tesla, and the alternating current (AC) technology Tesla patented in 1888, before he was hired by Westinghouse, during the so-called “War of the Currents.”
