Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, observed in many Western Christian denominations. It takes place forty-six days before Easter, and may take place anytime between February 4 and March 10. Depending on denomination, it is observed with religious services, a ritual with ashes, and fasting.
In ancient times, ashes were used to express grief. The sprinkling of ashes on heads takes place in numerous places in the Bible. Christians continued the tradition as a sign of repentance. Christians in Western Europe were receiving ashes on the first day of Lent by the tenth century, although not yet in the Catholic Church. In 1091, the Catholic Church joined the ritual, after Pope Urban II ordered ashes should be given in Rome. The day soon came to be called Ash Wednesday. Some denominations stopped giving out ashes after the Reformation, sometime around 1600, but still observed Ash Wednesday as the first day of Lent.

Why Garrett Shrader transferred to SU to compete for starting quarterback (DO; Smith)
Garrett Shrader scrambled down the right sideline on 4th and 16, put his head down and went airborne. Then a true freshman at Mississippi State, Shrader knew he would get popped by the two Kansas State defenders in front of him. He lept anyway. It was “all or nothing,” he told reporters postgame.
The Bulldogs were down seven in the final three minutes, and though Shrader’s wild 360 in mid-air went viral, it wasn’t enough for a first down. Mississippi State lost 31-24 at home, but Shrader’s rushing ability and toughness helped earn him the starting job the next week against Kentucky.
“Across the country, other quarterbacks will look at that (play) and say ‘That guy is crazy, I would never do that,’” said Anthony Boone, Shrader’s longtime trainer. “Shrader is a guy that’s going to put himself on the line for his team.”
Shrader became the second MSU true freshman to start in an SEC game since 2007. He was one of just three FBS freshman quarterbacks to account for 1,000 passing yards and 500 rushing yards in 2019. But during his sophomore season, MSU started Stanford transfer K.J. Costello instead of Shrader. The Charlotte native appeared in just four games — at wide receiver and special teams — and announced his decision to transfer to Syracuse in December.
Now, Shrader is once again expected to compete for the starting job, this time against fellow four-star recruit, Tommy DeVito. Shrader will enter a Syracuse program coming off a one-win season in which the offense only averaged 17.8 points per game. SU’s up-tempo offense factored into his commitment decision, he told The Daily Orange.
“I’ll be playing in a great offense that has a track record of being really explosive when they get the right guy in there,” Shrader said. “I hope I can compete and be that guy and be explosive … where it be running the ball, throwing the ball, RPO game, all that stuff.”

SU football lands 1st commitment from Class of 2022: 3-star DB Cornell Perry (PS; $; Curtis)
Syracuse football secured its first verbal commitment from the recruiting class of 2022 in three-star defensive back Cornell Perry.
Perry, a 6-foot-1, 175-pound cornerback out of Woodhaven High School (Michigan) announced on Tuesday that he would attend Syracuse.
Syracuse football defensive coordinator Tony White teased Perry’s pledge to the Orange program Monday morning on Twitter. A little over 24 hours later, the news was official.
The Orange extended a scholarship offer to Perry on Jan. 26.

Florida State hires new director of high school relations (tomahawknation.com; Cox)
Florida State and head coach Mike Norvell officially announced an addition to their staff Tuesday morning. Ryan Bartow has been named the new director of high school relations. He held the same position at Syracuse last year.
“I’m extremely excited about the addition of Ryan Bartow to the Seminole Family,” Norvell said. “Ryan brings extensive knowledge and incredible relationships throughout the state of Florida as well as the southeast region to Tallahassee. He will be a great ambassador of our program and will be a wonderful asset for coaches and prospects connecting to our Florida State football program.”

Every ACC team's reason for optimism heading into 2021 (247sports.com; Marsdale)
For the sixth-straight season, the Clemson Tigers came home with the ACC Championship in football, further asserting their dominance on the league. And at the rate that the Tigers continue to recruit at, with Dabo Swinney looking like he’s not going anywhere anytime soon, it doesn’t look like Clemson is about to fall off either.
But this year’s championship didn’t come without a little bit of a challenge, as they had been coming in years past. This year, Clemson faced Notre Dame — a team that made the College Football Playoff — in the ACC Championship game. While the Tigers ended up winning the game by 24 points, it was a revenge game for the Tigers after losing to the Fighting Irish earlier in the season.
Even with star quarterback Trevor Lawrence leaving the program, Clemson looks to be in good hands with DJ Uiagalelei taking over the starting quarterback role. But it is no doubt a new era of football in the ACC and perhaps a chance for someone else in the league to get a shot at winning the conference. But in order to do that, those teams will need to come out swinging from the start of the season.

BOSTON COLLEGE: YEAR TWO OF THE JEFF HAFLEY-PHIL JURKOVEC COMBO
Boston College was 247Sports' pick to finish last in the ACC. Instead, Jeff Hafley took over the program and finished with a winning season. He not only exceeded expectations, but he has set sights on a breakout year for the program in 2021. Jurkovec is one of the best in the conference and receiver Zay Flowers returns after nearly hitting 1,000 yards last season....

NC STATE: DEVIN LEARY COMING BACK FROM INJURY
“The return of Devin Leary is definitely the biggest reason for increased optimism for NC State,” Pack Pride’s Cory Smith says. “He went 3-0 in his three starts last year, including a 4 TD game against Pitt on the road with the final TD coming on a game-winning drive. He broke his ankle and missed the final six games of the season, but comes in as the obvious starter if he can stay healthy.”
PITTSBURGH: KENNY PICKETT RETURNS
Pickett will be back despite participating in Senior Day activities in 2020. He threw for 2,408 yards despite missing two games with an ankle injury, which resulted in two losses for the Panthers, who some say might have actually surpasses expectations considering the schedule. Picket has thrown for 7,984 yards and 39 touchdowns against 25 interceptions in his career. The Panthers will lean on Pickett to carry the Panthers, who face a bit of a rebuild, particularly on defense.SYRACUSE: ADDITION OF GARRETT SHRADER

As a true freshman at MSU in 2019, Shrader started four games and appeared in 10, completing 57.5 percent of his passes for 1,170 yards, eight touchdowns and five interceptions. He also rushed for 587 yards (5.2 ypc) and six scores, displaying a level of mobility that could mask the Orange's offensive line woes in recent years. He’ll provide quarterback competition to Tommy DeVito.
“I think it’s quarterback depth with the addition of Garrett Shrader,” CuseNation’s Stephen Bailey said. “They haven’t gone a full year without needing two QBs since 2012. They’ve got two capable ones now in DeVito and Shrader.”

Don and Emily Schiffer wondered as they trekked to the back corner of Reed Webster Park in Camillus where someone would hide a medallion.
Emily, 14 and a fan of the TV show “Survivor,” floated the question: Where would they hide something like a hidden immunity idol?
The father-daughter pair split up, Emily looking past the tree line and her father staying in the clearing.
“I found it,” Emily yelled back to her father as she stood looking at the backside of a tree.
They’d beaten the other 50 or so people they saw in the park trying to find the medallion and win the 34th Annual Treasure Hunt, sponsored by Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard with Countryside Federal Credit Union. The prize for finding the medallion is $2,000.
Don, 40, hunted for the medallion with his daughters Emily, Callie, 9, and Brynn, 7. His son, Danny, 12, decided to stay home. The family has participated in the search for the medallion for years. They plan to split the winnings among the four of them.
Earlier Tuesday, Don, who is a special education teacher at Onondaga Road Elementary School, received his second dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.
Worried about the side effects that sometimes accompany the second shot, he wanted to stay active. When Emily’s junior varsity basketball practice was canceled, the family decided to hunt for the medallion.
They used the clues to narrow down where it might be. One clue suggested the medallion was by the Erie Canal, another said that wherever the medallion had been hidden had some history and then Tuesday’s clue intimated there were baseball fields and tennis courts.
Emily, who plays tennis at the Reed Webster Park tennis courts during the summer, suggested they look at that park.
“It’s gotta be there,” she told her father.
