Welcome to George Washington's Birthday!

George Washington was born in Virginia on February 11, 1731, according to the then-used Julian calendar. In 1752, however, Britain and all its colonies adopted the Gregorian calendar which moved Washington's birthday a year and 11 days to February 22, 1732.

Americans celebrated Washington's Birthday long before Congress declared it a federal holiday. The centennial of his birth prompted festivities nationally and Congress established a Joint Committee to arrange for the occasion.

At the recommendation of the Committee, chaired by Henry Clay of the Senate and Philemon Thomas of the House, Congress adjourned on February 22, 1832 out of respect for Washington's memory and in commemoration of his birth.

Syracuse Football: Mike Schmidt brings track record of OL success to SU (itlh; Adler)

The Syracuse football offensive-line struggles over the past few years are well-documented, and hopefully, Mike Schmidt can help turn things around for this Orange unit.

Pete Thamel, a national reporter for Yahoo Sports, first broke the news via Twitter that the ‘Cuse is planning to hire San Diego State offensive-line coach Schmidt to the same position on the Hill.

Schmidt would replace former Orange offensive-line coach Mike Cavanaugh, who last month elected to leave Central New York to become the new OL coach at Arizona State.

In 2018, Syracuse football notched a 10-3 season and finished the year ranked No. 15 in both major polls. However, since then, the team has put forth 5-7 and 1-10 campaigns, and the offensive line has had its share of performance woes.

To be fair, during the recently completed 2020 stanza, when the squad only collected one victory, the ‘Cuse offensive line did experience some unfortunate injuries that certainly contributed to its struggles.

However, Syracuse football boasts a couple of talented offensive linemen within its 2021 recruiting cycle. Plus, as Stephen Bailey of 247Sports points out, “the unit does return all of its production from 2020, including a healthy Dakota Davis at guard, and adds Florida transfer Chris Bleich, who sat out last season due to NCAA transfer rules, as well as junior college product Jakob Bradford. The Orange is expected to pick up another transfer lineman to that group with one of its three remaining scholarships for the 2021 cycle.”

High school football kicks off Monday night: here's what you need to know the season, fans (wjla.com)

Many high school sports in Fairfax county are returning this week. In fact, the football season will kick off Monday night.

ABC7 News will have special coverage each Monday for the next two weeks.

It will be a season like no other: it is starting in the dead of winter instead of fall.

There will be fans.

Each school has to be under 30% capacity at its stadium, and every player is allowed two fans in attendance.

It will be a six-game season, and the football state championship is scheduled for Friday, May 7.

Coaches and players are excited but they admit it is going to be strange especially playing with a mask under their face mask.

Umari Hatcher and Darryl Overton are Freedom High School seniors and will play their first games this weekend.

“I don’t like it, I don’t like wearing it because then I have a mouthpiece in and it’s just not gonna feel good,” exclaims Hatcher who will play at Syracuse University next year.

Three-star McDonogh quarterback Preston Howard commits to Maryland: ‘I’m going where I can build’ (baltimoresun.com; Andrews)

The Maryland football team continues to successfully recruit in-state talent, this time landing three-star McDonogh quarterback Preston Howard.
Howard was overjoyed to commit to a program that he has long dreamed of playing for ever since his Arbutus recreational football days.

“It feels great,” said Howard, who announced his commitment Sunday in a video on Twitter. “I can’t explain it. I’m so happy, you know? It’s a really great feeling. I’m going where I can build and knowing the kinds of plays that I can make and just be great.”

The 6-foot-5, 220-pound dual-threat quarterback had several scholarship offers from Power Five schools, including Arizona State, Auburn, Boston College, Michigan, Penn State, Syracuse and West Virginia. He is the 10th-ranked dual-threat quarterback in the country in the Class of 2022 and the 11th-best player in Maryland, according to 247Sports.

Syracuse Football: Some intriguing, and first-time, match-ups in 2021 (itlh; Adler)

Hopefully, there’s nowhere to go but up for Syracuse football in 2021. The Orange were hampered by some unfortunate injuries and inexperience at various positions a stanza ago, when the ‘Cuse went an awful 1-10.

However, I believe that the Orange has a chance to significantly improve upon that 2020 record come this fall. The ‘Cuse will attempt to turn things around, though, with a roster and coaching staff that entail numerous moving parts.

The squad’s 2021 recruiting class isn’t highly rated, but it’s solid. The Orange is seeing some talented guys transfer into Central New York, as well as depart the Hill for the pros or other collegiate groups.

There are new coaches, young stars in the making, a relatively frustrated fan base, and a fairly interesting 2021 schedule that recently came out for the ‘Cuse and its Atlantic Coast Conference peers.

Let’s take a closer look at the Syracuse football 2021 foes.

The Orange athletics department put out a press release not too long ago that contains fascinating nuggets on a variety of the team’s 2021 opponents.

The ‘Cuse kicks things off on Sept. 4 at Ohio, and Syracuse football is beginning a season on the road for the fourth year in a row. The Orange will battle the Bobcats, out of the Midwest Athletic Conference, for the inaugural instance.

On Sept. 11, the ‘Cuse hosts former Big East Conference rival Rutgers. These groups met annually from 1980 to 2012, with Syracuse football leading the all-time series, 30-12-1. These days, of course, the Scarlet Knights suit up in the rugged Big Ten Conference.

Clemson football: 3 biggest 2021 offseason questions for Tigers (saturdayblitz.com; Pryor)

Clemson football fell short against the Ohio State Buckeyes in the national semifinal. These are some offseason questions the Tigers must answer.

The Clemson Tigers are fresh off their sixth consecutive College Football Playoff, losing to the Ohio State Buckeyes.

This offseason will be the first in three years when Trevor Lawrence does not suit up as quarterback for the Tigers. He helped the Tigers win a second national title in the Dabo Swinney era and continue the separation between Clemson and the rest of the ACC.

How the Tigers lost to Ohio State does leave them with some issues that must be addressed. As the elite of the elite in college football, the issue is not about what happens in the conference; it happens in the College Football Playoff. Clemson is all about the “national title or bust” status now.

Clemson’s last two appearances leave lots of questions about the talent level on the defense.

It’s concerning that Joe Burrow outplayed Lawrence in 2019 and Justin Fields did the same in 2020. Were those performances on Lawrence or an indicator of Clemson’s need to improve their overall talent? For all of the issues Ohio State had in coverage, the Buckeyes covered Clemson’s wide receivers pretty well.

Six of these games are non-conference ACC home games (one is a neutral-site game in Atlanta, but appears to be part of the ACC television package.) The opponents in those games are USF, Old Domininion, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, UCF, and Liberty.
Two ACC teams play three non-Saturday games each: Louisville and North Carolina.
Five more ACC teams play two such games in 2021: NC State, Syracuse, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest.
Another six ACC teams play one of these games: Boston College, Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Miami, and Pitt.

DEC offering more than 50 species of low-cost tree and shrub seedlings during annual spring sale (PS; $; Figura)

The state Department of Environmental Conservation is once again offering its annual spring tree and shrub seedling sale, with more than 50 species available for purchase from the Col. William Fox Memorial Saratoga Tree Nursery.

“For more than 100 years, DEC’s tree nursery in Saratoga has helped reforest New York by providing seedlings for conservation plantings across the state,” DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos said. “This annual spring sale is a chance for the public to take part in this tradition by obtaining winter-hardy trees and shrubs for their property.”

The nursery sale offers a low-cost opportunity for a variety of goals, from the landowner looking to do large-scale, conservation-related plantings on their property to someone looking to create a windbreak or simply cool their house with shade in the summer months.

“In addition to benefitting residential properties, planting trees also positively impacts the surrounding environment. Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, making them a powerful tool in the fight against climate change. They also provide food and shelter for native wildlife, improve water quality by filtering runoff, prevent erosion, and so much more.” DEC said.
