Welcome to Great Lakes Awareness Day!

Great Lakes Awareness Day celebrates the Great Lakes and highlights the issues they face, and how the lakes can be preserved. Events for the day have involved organizations such as schools, aquariums, and museums. There is not much information available online about how the day is celebrated or how it came to be.

There are five Great Lakes: Superior, Huron, Michigan, Ontario, and Erie. Together they make up the largest body of freshwater on Earth and stretch 750 miles from east to west. They are located on the border of the United States and Canada and touch the states of Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, New York, and Pennsylvania. It is believed that at one time the Great Lakes were covered by a glacier—it receded towards Canada and left depressions filled with water.

The 2-3 zone: Keeping Syracuse basketball relevant - The Juice Online juice; Vescovi)

With spring practices mostly wrapped up across the ACC, it’s time for our ‘Way Too Early’ 2021 ACC Power Rankings.

Top Tier – The Incumbent

1. Clemson

The Tigers are easily the favorite in the ACC next year… and the year after that… and the year after that. They will need to replace Trevor Lawrence and several others, but they have more than made up for it on the recruiting trail. I don’t expect a national championship caliber team due to all new faces, but I do expect them to be in Charlotte in December.

Tier 2 – The Challengers

2. North Carolina

Sam Howell comes back as the best quarterback in the conference and he will be a force all season. Mack Brown has started to rebuild the defense through recruiting, but his team lost a lot of good players in the draft this past weekend. They will be in the Coastal hunt all season.

3. Miami
The U has found their stride under Manny Diaz. They will be bringing D’Eriq King back for another go at the ACC Championship. They lost several great players to the draft but have always recruited well. The one thing that’s holding them back is the injury King suffered in the bowl game. Will he be the same player once he returns? Hard to tell, but if he is, I expect the Miami-UNC game to have Coastal championship implications.

4. Pittsburgh
Pitt gets Kenny Pickett back for a fifth season in addition to a much improved offensive line that paved the way for some huge performances against VT and GT to end the season. The Panthers will be strong in both trenches for the first time since 2016. With a strong defense and a veteran quarterback, they will be a dark horse in the Coastal conversation all season.

5. NC State
Dave Doeren continues to put together a solid team year in and year out. They will be getting Devin Leary back from a season ending injury and his abilities could launch the Wolfpack in to the next stratosphere of ACC contention. We will find out if NCST is for real after the fourth week of the season when they play Clemson at home.

Tier 3 – Programs on the Rise

6. Boston College

Boston College has Phil Jurkovec to build off of, and that is plenty. The transfer was impressive all season long and put the Eagles in position to win even when the odds were against them. The schedule lightens up with a big showdown against Missouri in Week 4 that will let us know if this team is for real. A strong performance to start the season can propel them in to the challengers conversation very easily.

7. Virginia
The Cavaliers were a tad bit disappointing last season coming off their Coastal Championship but they still have a lot of pieces to work with and the ability to challenge anyone. The Coastal is getting stronger but they are certainly primed to take a run at the title or at least play spoiler.

8. Louisville
This team fell off the map in 2020. But they have a heck of a lot of talent and speed to work with. The Cardinals should learn to win a few games after getting plastered on the road all season. Let’s call that valuable experience; stuff that builds character. But this team needs to find some defense before next season or we could expect a repeat of 2020.

9. Wake Forest
The Deacs put together some great football in 2020 but they just weren’t consistent enough to win every week. I would look for this team to rally around Sam Hartman and play more consistent football in 2021. They can take on any team on a Saturday and give them hell. I just don’t see them doing it every Saturday, which keeps them out of the challengers conversation.

Tier 4 – Unknowns

10. Virginia Tech

The Hokies had another interesting off season with several players leaving and several stars jumping to the draft, but they always seem to put it together when the season comes around. The biggest question for the Hokies it this: Who is going to play quarterback? If they find the right guy they will shoot up this list, if they don’t they will sink like a stone by seasons end.

11. Georgia Tech
The Yellow Jackets showed up every week ready to play. However, they just weren’t good enough to win most weeks with their talent. Head coach Geoff Collins is a guy that likes to get his team fired up but his behavior on the sidelines leads to his team accruing penalties en mass. The single most important development for the Yellow Jackets might be the maturity of Collins, which will have a ripple effect on the rest of the team. If Collins doesn’t grow up then his stay in Atlanta might be shorter then we all initially thought.

12. Florida State
What will Florida State be this year? It’s a good question and not one that’s easy to answer. They had a new coach and loads of talent but struggled for most of the season. I would generally give them the benefit of the doubt because they are Florida State and keep them in the top half of these rankings. But the offensive line needs so much help that I can’t do that in good faith. This might be a little low for the Seminoles but it seems fair to me considering the circumstances.

Tier 5 – Prayers are needed

13. Duke

Duke has a good football coach in David Cutcliffe, one that can get the most out of his players every Saturday. But they don’t have much talent and QB Chase Brice left the team in December. It seems like they may be clawing from behind in every game and if you take them lightly you will lose but team’s that lineup to play hard will put the Blue Devils to bed easily.

14. Syracuse
2020 was awful for the Orange. Tommy Devito comes back, and hopefully not to take a beating all season long. The Dino Babers’ regime has been underwhelming so far and the recruiting has been towards the bottom of the ACC. This team will remain in the basement until they prove they belong elsewhere. Luckily, the OOC schedule is not horrible and could allow the team to get a little momentum before heading in to conference play.

Syracuse Football: Urban Meyer is a big fan of new Jaguar Andre Cisco (itlh; Adler)

Former Syracuse football star safety Andre Cisco will kick off his NFL career with the Jacksonville Jaguars, a team that really struggled in the most recent campaign but has compiled a boatload of terrific talent in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Jacksonville, which went a dismal 1-15 a season ago, picked Cisco at No. 65 overall in this year’s NFL Draft, which represented the first selection in the third round.

The 6-foot Cisco, as a junior in the 2020 stanza for the Orange, was a pre-season All-American candidate. But he, unfortunately, suffered a lower-body injury when he collided with a ‘Cuse teammate prior to the Orange’s contest on Sept. 26 of last year versus Georgia Tech at the Carrier Dome.

That injury led Cisco to miss the remainder of the 2020 term, and he elected to end his Syracuse football career by declaring for the 2021 NFL Draft.

New Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer, a three-time national champion at the collegiate level, had some kind words to say about Cisco.

"We just fell in love with him."

How Andre Cisco Fits in Jacksonville (SI; McAllister)

The Jacksonville Jaguards selected former Syracuse safety Andre Cisco with the first pick in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft. What does he bring to Jacksonville and how does he fit into their plans? We spoke with John Shipley of Jaguar Report to get the inside scoop.

Q: How do you envision Cisco fitting into the Jacksonville secondary?

Shipley: "It isn't often that a player is automatically a team's best playmaker at his position from day one, but that's exactly what the Jaguars are getting in Cisco. Cisco's 13 interceptions in a little over two years of play in college is the same number of interceptions the rest of the Jaguars' safety room has combined for at the NFL level during their careers. No safety on the roster has his dynamic range or ball skills. The Jaguars are set to run a hybrid and attacking defensive scheme similar to that of the Baltimore Ravens, a team that asks its safeties to play a lot of roles. Cisco fits well into the free safety role due to his range as a single-high safety as well as his willingness to fill against the run."

Q: What has been the fan reaction to Cisco's selection?

Shipley: "I think most Jaguars fans were fairly ecstatic because most realized that the only reason Cisco was available in the third-round was because of his ACL injury. Had he never been hurt, it is hard to imagine his dominant production over the previous two years would not have repeated in 2020. A healthy Cisco likely would have been a top-50 pick, so getting him at No. 65 seemed like a steal to the vast majority of Jaguars fans, especially considering the Jaguars seemed comfortable with taking Cisco even at No. 45. Jaguars fans wanted playmakers and high-powered athletes this draft, and that is exactly what they got in Cisco."

NFL Draft: Why the ACC Bowl Record? (RX; HM)

NFL Draft: Why the ACC Bowl Record?

The ACC just completed a very successful NFL draft [LINK], with 51 players selected if you include the temporary football member (42 players even if you don't). That's all well and good, but it does bring up a good question posed by All Sports Discussion:
With so much NFL talent, "...where were the wins?"
The article brings up the ACC's composite bowl record is 4-13 over the last two seasons, including 0-6 last season. How is that's possible, they wonder? Excellent question!

The author concludes that it mustbe coaching. While I agree that coaching has been to blame for some losses, I don't think that's the only thing at work here.

The 2020 Bowl Season

First of all, I think the 2020 season must be treated separately. Yes, it's bad that the ACC went 0-6 in bowl games last season, but you simply cannot combine that with previous seasons - it's apples and orangutans.

Regarding the 2020 bowl season, let me remind you of what I called "The ACC Bowl Principle". It's based on "The Peter's Principle", only for ACC bowl games. Basically, it states that ACC teams

The $4,500 fish: Cicero angler wins big in weekend Oneida Lake Walleye Derby (PS; $; Figura)

The angler who reeled in the biggest fish in this weekend’s Chittenango Lions Club Walleye Derby on Oneida Lake was lucky enough to more than doubled his winnings as the fish also had a special tag attached. As a result, his winnings totaled $4,500.

Kyle Magill-Jones’s 25 ¾-inch walleye, caught at around 9 p.m. Saturday evening, was the biggest fish landed by the 1,200 anglers who participated in this weekend’s derby. He won $2,000 for first place.

The fish also happened to be one of three tagged fish stocked in the lake earlier this month by the state Department of Environmental, especially for the tournament. For catching one of the tagged fish, the Cicero, resident received an additional $2,500.

Magill-Jones, 26, was fishing at the time in his boat with his buddy, Jeffrey Boshart, of Brewerton. He said he caught the fish on the lake’s west end by casting a Rapala Shadow Rap lure.
