National-Receptionists-Day.png
Welcome to International Receptionists' Day!

A receptionist is often the first person a client or customer will meet when they arrive at a company, and they are the ones who have the task of making a positive first impression on whoever walks through the doors. Taking place on the second Wednesday in May, the purpose of International Receptionists' Day is to "foster a recognition of the importance of a receptionist's role," "promote pride and professionalism amongst receptionists for the important role they play within an organization," "give receptionists an opportunity to share stories and link up with other colleagues around the world," and "give employers an opportunity to shine a light on their receptionists and celebrate their achievements across their businesses."

The day started out as Receptionists' Day, being created by Jennifer Alexander of the National Receptionists Association, "to recognize the special role that receptionists play and to distinguish their skills from the admin or secretary." It was first observed in 1991, exclusively in the United States. In 2012, Rapport, a provider of reception services in the United Kingdom, brought the holiday to that country. It became International Receptionists' Day in 2016, after the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia joined together to mark the day. Canada, Ireland, and other European countries have since joined in observation of the day.

Three Priority Targets Schedule Syracuse Official Visits (SI; McAllister)

June is going to be an active month for many programs across the country. With the NCAA lifting pandemic restrictions on visits starting June 1st, schools are looking to get their priority targets on campus for official visits. Syracuse is doing just that and has two more recruits scheduled for officials.

LB Mekhi Mason: Mason has scheduled his Syracuse official visit for June 3rd. Mason is a standout linebacker for Monsignor Place High in Florida. He also holds offers from Indiana, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Louisville, LSU, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Pittsburgh, West Virginia and several others. Mason also has an official visit scheduled for June 18th to Indiana.

LB Mani Powell: Powell has his official to Central New York scheduled for June 25th. Powell stars for McKinley High in Ohio. He also holds offers from Arkansas, Boston College, Buffalo, Central Michigan, Coastal Carolina, Indiana, Kent State, Liberty and others. Powell also has an official visit scheduled for June 11th to Arkansas.

DE DJ Jackson: Jackson has his official visit scheduled for June 18th. Jackson stars for Sumter High in South Carolina. He also holds offers from Georgia Tech, Kansas, NC State and West Virginia, among others. Syracuse just recently offered on May 7th.

Syracuse football depth chart projection: Who improved their standing this spring? (offense) (247sports.com; $; Bailey)

Syracuse football's players got their first chance to make an offseason impression on the coaching staff during spring ball. While performance during fall camp -- after the team adds two key transfers and the majority of its signing class -- will ultimately determine who sees the field to start 2021, spring competition has set the table for fall opportunities.

247Sports published a projected depth chart going into the spring, but background conversations and limited public information have helped shape the program's development over the last eight weeks. This spring was described by many as the most physical of the Dino Babers era, and it produced numerous standouts and takeaways.

Orange Watch: Syracuse football turning into a modern day ‘Punter U’ - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: With the recent free agent signing of 2020 Syracuse punter Nolan Cooney, and if he makes the 2021 New Orleans Saints roster and Riley Dixon and Sterling Hofrichter keep their present jobs with the New York Giants and Atlanta Falcons, respectively, then ex-Syracuse players would comprise almost ten percent (9.38%) of the NFL’s punting fraternity.

Lost among all the great players produced at Syracuse who went on to the professional ranks, is the fact that the Orangemen have had punting specialists over eight decades, from the tenure of Ben Schwartzwalder all the way to the present Dino Babers era.

Here’s the list in reverse chronological order of the 13 players who led Syracuse in punting (season(s) noted in parenthesis), and who went on to play (or attempted to play) in either the NFL or CFL:

  • Nolan Cooney (2020)-Cooney signed an undrafted free agent contract with the New Orleans Saints on May 1, 2021. An honorable mention All-American and third-team all-ACC selection in 2020, his 3,314 total punting yards led the ACC.
  • Sterling Hofrichter (2016-19)-Atlanta Falcons 2020-present. As a rookie, Hofrichter punted 56 times in his initial season, averaging 42.5 yards a kick. Only 17 other punters had 56 or more punts in 2020.
  • Riley Dixon (2013-15)-Denver Broncos 2016-17, New York Giants 2018-present. Dixon punted 65 times for the Giants in 2020, averaging 44.8 yards per kick. Just five other punters who had 65 or more kicks had a better average last season.
  • Brendan Carney (2003-06)-Baltimore Ravens 2007. Carney took part in the Ravens training camp in 2007, but was released before the season.
  • Mike Shafer (1999-2002)-St. Louis Rams 2003, Houston Texans 2003. Shafer failed to make an NFL roster in 2003, ending up handling the placekicking duties for the Rhein Fire of the NFL’s European League in 2004.
  • Pat O’Neill (1990-93)-New England Patriots 1994-95, Chicago Bears 1996. Playing a 25 game NFL career, 24 of which were with the Patriots, O’Neill was 1-for-1 in career field goals and passing attempts in addition to his punting duties, named to the 1994 NFL all-rookie team.
  • Bernie Ruoff (1973-75)-Winnipeg Blue Bombers 1975-79, Hamilton Tiger Cats 1980-87, B.C. Lions 1988. Ruoff holds the CFL record for the longest field goal, 56-yards in 1984, in addition to the most punts in a game (22 in 1984) and the most punting yardage in one game (1,054 in 1984), over a 19-year pro career.
  • George Jakowenko (1969-1970)-Oakland Raiders 1974, Buffalo Bills 1976. In just a 17 game NFL career, Jakowenko finished 12-of-17 in his field goal attempts, and was the first of twelve Bills player to wear jersey number 5 in team history.

ACC Post-Spring Positional Power Rankings: Running Back – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Eads)

Well the spring is absolutely flying by. The Fizz staff will be packing up for the summer over the coming weeks and enjoy a few months away from school. Obviously, the content will continue to pump here as well. We’ve got plenty of football, basketball, and even lacrosse to talk about. Today we’re back to the gridiron.

Last Friday we unveiled our first ACC post-spring positional power rankings starting with quarterback. North Carolina’s Sam Howell took the top spot, and SU’s Tommy DeVito came in at #13 out of 14.

Clearly, that’s not very good but what argument can you make that would push us to rank him higher? We’re still waiting on the New Jersey native to breakout, maybe it comes this fall.

Today, the Orange should fare much better and rank much higher because the running backs are the subject at hand. We’ll rank which ACC teams have the best running back rooms from 1 to 14 and explain our reasoning.

  1. NC State – Zonovan “Bam” Knight and Ricky Person Jr.,
> The Wolfpack have one of the more underrated RB duos in the conference in Knight and Person Jr. Knight is back for his junior season after back-to-back 700 yard campaigns on the ground. In 2020 he doubled his scoring though going from 5 in 2019, to 10 in ‘20.

> Person Jr. was solid last season as well finishing with 643 yards and four scores. He owns about 1,400 yards for his career and 9 touchdowns so he’s very seasoned in the realm of college football. Knight and Person Jr. should lead the offense in ‘21 as the Pack tries to find a new signal caller.

  1. Clemson – Lyn-J-Dixon, Kobe Pace, Will Shipley
> Before we even get into the names, you can assume these players are very talented. Clemson can recruit and bring in all the big names each and every recruiting cycle. With Travis Etienne off to the NFL, Dixon and Pace have a chance to carve their own legacies.

> Dixon is a rising senior who enters 2021 with 1,372 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns on 208 attempts. He enters what figures to be his final season as a Tiger, second in school history in yards per carry at 6.60 (behind Etienne). Now this number is a bit skewed because he hasn’t had the amount of production that could curtail that stat, but still noteworthy. We’ll see if he can step into the spotlight and have a big senior year.

> Pace is a similar case as Dixon, but much younger. He’s only a rising sophomore that could have seen a lot more run as a freshman if not for Etienne. In 2020, Pace took 18 carries for 75 yards and caught five passes for 26 yards with a score. Obviously the numbers aren’t impressive, but he’s a former blue chip recruit that has the tools to be the #2 back in this offense.

> It wouldn’t be Clemson if there wasn’t some young player getting lauded with hype early in his career. The 2021 version of this is Will Shipley. He’s a former consensus five-star recruit, according to the 247sports.com composite rankings. He was the #1 all-purpose back prospect and own a verified 4.46 forty-yard dash. He received a pro comparison to Bengals running back Joe Mixon and is a projected 2-3 round pick. It seems like it’s only a matter of time before Shipley is the featured back, he’ll definitely be in the rotation in 2021.

  1. Florida State – Jashaun Corbin, DJ Williams, Lawrance Toafili
> The Seminoles always have a talented backfield and that’s no different this year. Say what you want about FSU, tailback has never been a position of weakness. Head Coach Mike Norvell has attacked the transfer portal to bring in former Texas A&M Aggie Jashaun Corbin and former Auburn Tiger DJ Williams to Tallahassee. Of course, the Noles have no problem getting talent from high school either and Toaflili fits the blue chip billing.

> In 2020 Corbin played in all nine games and totaled 548 all-purpose yards with 18 rushes for 401 yards. He should take on a bigger role in the fall as a tailback and kickoff return threat. Williams enters his first season as a Seminole after falling down the depth chart at Auburn. Williams can be the power rusher for FSU that can move the ball on short yardage situations or just get you some yards on 1st and 2nd down.

> Toalfili is a former four-star recruit that had a big freshman season in 2020. He took 37 carries for 356 yards and two touchdowns. He earned FSU co-offensive player of the year honors for his big opening campaign. He should be the #2 back entering the season and has all the tools to potentially hit 1,000 yards as a sophomore.

  1. Miami – Donald Chaney Jr., Jaylan Knighton, Cam’Ron Harris
> The Canes have a three-headed monster in the backfield heading into 2021. Harris is the headliner after a decent 126 carry, 643 yard, 10 touchdown year in 2020. That was his first season as the starter and he should be even better next fall.

> Knighton and Chaney Jr. battle for the #2 spot behind Harris. They are both former blue chip recruits and played well in ‘20. Chaney led the way with over 300 yards rushing, and Knighton went over 200, but he may be the biggest dual-threat at the position. In 2020 he caught 11 passes for 135 yards and a score. His receiving ability adds to his offensive arsenal and gives “The U” one of the deepest rooms in the ACC.

  1. Georgia Tech – Jahmyr Gibbs, Jordan Mason, Jamious Griffin
> Well the Yellow Jackets have always been good at running the ball, that’s no different this year. Here’s the thing, we’re not talking about the triple option. Head Coach Geoff Collins has installed the spread offense and has plenty of options out of the backfield to make it pop in 2021.

> Jahmyr Gibbs is the headliner for this Georgia Tech squad. The former blue chip recruit had a solid freshman season taking 71 carries for 384 yards and four touchdowns. He also set a career high with 105 yards against the Orange. He should be the #1 back for GT in 2021.

> Jordan Mason is a former All-ACC third team performer (2019) and has three seasons under his belt. He saw a huge dip in production last season as he went from 951 yards in ‘19 to just 63 toal in 2020. Why? Jahmyr Gibbs. We’ll see if Mason can figure more prominently in 2021.

> Jamious Griffin is another former four-star running back that GT beat a lot of strong programs for. He had a solid sophomore season in 2020 taking 47 carries for 240 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Griffin took the #2 spot from Mason last season, we’ll see if he can hold onto that spot but either way this Yellow Jackets tailback room is deep.

  1. North Carolina – Ty Chandler and Caleb Hood
> If you aren’t familiar with the name Ty Chandler it’s because he’s new to the ACC. Chandler is a grad transfer from the University of Tennessee and had a spectacular career as a Volunteer. The Nashville native totaled over 2,000 yards over four seasons with 25 starts in 45 games played. Chandler departs Rocky Top fifth in UT history with 3,245 all-purpose yards. He’ll take over as the bell-cow back in the Tar Heels offense now that Javonte Williams and Michael Carter are in the NFL.

> Caleb Hood is another name that won’t ring a bell because he’s never carried the ball in a game scenario in Chapel Hill. Hood is an early enrollee and was a three-star recruit, according to his 247sports.com composite rankings. Don’t be fooled by that ranking though, the North Carolina native ran a verified 4.40 forty-yard dash at The Opening in 2019. He actually played quarterback in high school as well. Hood threw for over 6,000 yards to go along with nearly 2,000 on the ground over his three years playing prep ball. UNC needs production behind Chandler to be successful, Hood might be the #2 guy.

  1. Syracuse – Sean Tucker, Jarveon Howard, Abdul Adams
> It wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to call the SU backfield one of the best in the ACC. The Orange are experienced and deep. Not to mention a freshman burst onto the season in 2020. Sean Tucker returns after grabbing hold of the RB1 spot after a big debut in the 315. Tucker ran for the third-most yards by a freshman in program history, going for 626 in a shortened season. He’ll return as the starter in 2021, but he has some talent behind him as well.

> Jarveon Howard and Abdul Adams return to SU after opting-out of the 2020 season. Howard has played in 23 games for Syracuse and totaled 652 yards and 10 touchdowns on 144 carries. He’s a powerful and experienced option for the Orange and should get some share of the carries in the fall. Adams is another seasoned veteran that was actually SU’s backup in 2019. In that ‘19 campaign he went over 300 yards and should be another option for ‘Cuse in the fall.

Using the Hawaii Exemption (without playing at Hawaii) (RX; HM)

Using the Hawaii Exemption (without playing at Hawaii)

Five years ago we explained how the Hawaii Exemption works [LINK]. Pretty much everyone knows about this part of the rule:
...an institution that is scheduled to play a regular-season game in Hawaii may play its first permissible contest with outside competition on the Saturday prior to the Thursday preceding Labor Day

However, what many don't realize is that there's also a provision for the teams which play in Hawaii later on in the season:

further... if the institution's first opponent of the season is not... located in Hawaii, the institution's first opponent of the season may also play its first contest... on the Saturday prior to the Thursday preceding Labor Day.
That means that there are two ways to play in week zero:
1) Play a game at Hawai'i, OR
2) Play a team that plays at Hawai'i
It's that second group I'm interested in. Which teams are those (teams located east of the Mississippi River highlighted in blue):

2022 Hawaii home football games

Saturday, Aug. 27 Vanderbilt Commodores
Saturday, Sep. 3 WKU Hilltoppers
Saturday, Sep. 17 Duquesne Dukes
Date TBA Nevada Wolf Pack
Date TBA UNLV Rebels
Date TBA Utah State Aggies
Date TBA Wyoming Cowboys

Vanderbilt won't do anyone any good because they actually play Hawaii in week zero. However, any ACC team could have scheduled WKU or Duquesne in week zero. Who are the Hilltoppers playing in week zero, 2022? Austin Peay. However, Florida State jumped on the opportunity to host Duquesne in week zero - good job, Seminoles!

Mountain West teams which visit Hawaii also count. Nevada plays at New Mexico State; Utah State hosts UConn. Neither UNLV nor Wyoming is taking advantage of their week zero exemption.

2023 Hawaii home games

Friday, Sep. 1 Stanford Cardinal
Saturday, Sep. 9 UAlbany Great Danes
Saturday, Sep. 23 New Mexico State Aggies
Date TBA Air Force Falcons
Date TBA Fresno State Bulldogs
Date TBA San Diego State Aztecs
Date TBA San Jose State Spartans

U Albany hosts Fordham in week zero (a missed opportunity for Syracuse!) New Mexico hosts U Mass. San Diego State hosts Idaho State. San Jose State hosts Cal Poly. Air Force doesn't play in week zero.

Attendance Cause and Effect (RX; HM)

Attendance Cause and Effect

Back in 2014, I did a study of the causes of high and low attendance at Pitt Panthers home football games. It spawned a series of articles on Cardiac Hill, two of which were written by yours truly. Here's what I found in my research:
1. Attendance does not correlate strongly with quality of opponent. Yes, the top two most-attended games in my findings were FSU and Notre Dame, but the fifth was New Hampshire, which came in above Ohio State! While this may seem counter-intuitive, it really makes sense when you think about it. Your fans don't come to see the visiting team - they come to see you! But the home team has a job to do, too...
2. If you win, they will come. Attendance for the first game is usually good no matter what. Then wins and losses start to make an impact on how many fans show up. Oh, not at first, but eventually it will have an impact. For example, attendance doesn't correlate with wins - until you get your 5th win, that is. Then it jumps, remaining more or less flat until you get to 8 wins, when it goes even higher. On the other end, attendances isn't really hurt by one or two losses, or even three... but the fourth loss is a killer, based on my research.
This also makes sense. When a team reaches five wins, it's playing for bowl-eligibility at the least. When it reaches eight wins, that team could be playing for a New Year's Six Bowl - or more. On the flip side, that fourth loss takes a team out of contention for anything more than a minor bowl. That doesn't exactly inspire the fan base.

Betting Odds Not Favorable For Boston College to Win ACC (SI; Black)

Online gambling site Betonline.ag has their upcoming conference odds out for the upcoming 2021 season and released conference odds. The ACC of course has Clemson as the overwhelming favorite and there isn't much money being put on the Boston College Eagles. Below you can find the current odds.

ACC - Odds to Win Conference

Clemson 1/8
North Carolina 15/2
Miami Florida 8/1
Florida State 25/1
Louisville 33/1
Virginia Tech 33/1
Wake Forest 33/1
Pittsburgh 40/1
Boston College 50/1
Georgia Tech 50/1
NC State 50/1
Virginia 50/1
Duke 200/1
Syracuse 200/1

As you can see Boston College is near the bottom of this list. Bettors probably believe that it's a long shot that the Eagles could dethrone Clemson--which is a fair assessment, and the odds get longer that they could win the ACC Championship game.

Kelly had been committed to Florida State since August 2020 before withdrawing his pledge from the Seminoles last month. FSU remains in contention for Kelly, but he decommitted because he committed early in the process and wanted to be sure that he makes the right college choice.

Average gas prices rise above $3 in NY state: Here’s why (PS; $; Herbert)

Why are gas prices rising?

The average cost of a gallon of regular gasoline rose above $3 per gallon in New York state this past week, to $3.004 on Monday, according to AAA. Nationally, average gas prices have jumped six cents this past week to $2.96 per gallon and will likely continue going up due to a number of factors, including the recent shutdown of the Colonial Pipeline.

“This shutdown will have implications on both gasoline supply and prices, but the impact will vary regionally. Areas including Mississippi, Tennessee and the east coast from Georgia into Delaware are most likely to experience limited fuel availability and price increases, as early as this week,” said Jeanette McGee, AAA spokesperson. “These states may see prices increase three to seven cents this week.”

The pipeline, which delivers approximately 45% of all fuel to the East Coast and runs from Texas to New York Harbor, was shut down over the weekend, due to a cybersecurity attack and extortion attempt by a criminal gang. The Associated Press reports some lateral lines have reopened, but there is no word of when the mainline, including the gasoline line, will be operational.

But gas prices have been rising steadily for months, including in Central New York. According to Gas Buddy, the cost of a gallon of regular gas in the Syracuse area has gone up from about $2.08 in November 2020 to $2.92 on Monday.
