Welcome to National Wine Day!

National Wine Day celebrates wine! If drinking in moderation, wine not only fights heart disease but has other health benefits. It can also help fight type II diabetes, stroke, some cancers, high cholesterol, and even liver disease. One of the healthiest wines in Pinot Noir; it contains a high amount of resveratrol. In general, red wines are healthier than white wines.

Wine is drunk on its own or with a meal and can be used as a flavoring in many recipes. It is usually made from fermented grapes; common grape varieties—which may give the wine its name—include Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Gamay. Hybrid grapes such as Concord may also be used. To create wine, the sugar in the grapes is eaten by yeast and turns into ethanol and carbon dioxide. Red wine is made from dark-colored grapes. The juice is actually greenish-white; the but violet or red color comes from the skin of the grapes. White wine is created from the fermentation of light-colored grape pulp. Yellow or green skinned grapes are usually used. Dark-skinned grapes can be used to make white wine, as long as the skin itself is not used. For example, Pinot Noir grapes can be used to make champagne. Rosé wine has some color from grape skins, but not enough to make a red wine.

SU football will host Colgate, completing 2023 schedule (PS; $; Mink)

Syracuse has scheduled a game against Colgate for the 2023 football season.

A Colgate spokesman confirmed Monday there is an agreement in place for the Raiders to visit the Carrier Dome on Sept. 2, 2023. That stands to be the Orange’s season opener that year.

The game completes SU’s 2023 football schedule and fills the final nonconference date over the next three seasons.

The Syracuse-Colgate series is knotted at 31-31-5 in their history dating back to 1891. The Orange last faced Colgate in the 2016 season opener, a 33-7 win in Dino Babers’ first game as head coach.

Here’s a look at SU’s upcoming schedules through the 2023 season:

Sept. 4 at Ohio
Sept. 11 vs. Rutgers
Sept. 18 vs. Albany
Sept. 24 (Friday) vs. Liberty

Orange Watch: Strength of opponents radically different for 2021 ACC football openers - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: In an exciting sign of the return to normalcy when it comes to ACC and Syracuse football, the league last week announced it will return to an in-person, pre-season media event in Charlotte July 21-22, and it released the initial game times and TV coverage of the Labor Day weekend matchups in September involving all 14 conference teams plus quasi-member Notre Dame.

We have always marveled at the start differences to the opening week of the college football season, the one game that sets the tone for the entirety of the three-month regular season.

This year, for example, North Carolina and Virginia Tech face each other right off the bat, putting one team at 0-1 overall and in the Coastal Division. Four ACC teams play Power 5 opponents, while on the other end of the scale Boston College and Virginia face FCS opponents Colgate and William & Mary, respectively.

Quite a difference in caliber of opponent.

Below we rate (late spring timeline) the strength of the opponent in the opening game matchup for each ACC team (in chronological order) using a three-tiered ranking:

  • Red=Top shelf opponent, leaning towards a loss.
  • Orange=Extreme caution needed to record a win.
  • Green=Looking like a win.
Thursday, Sept. 2

  • South Florida at NC State-USF won one game last season.

Best-case scenario for each ACC team in 2021 (247sports.com; Nivision)

As college football fans countdown to Week 1, the summer is a time when everyone is optimistic about their favorite program. Fans all across the country are looking over schedules and trying to find as many wins as possible.

Since that’s an exercise that every fan base is partaking in these days, we decided to figure out the best-case scenario for every program in the ACC. A few teams could contend for the College Football Playoff if everything breaks their way, and still more could be in for some memorable seasons.

Continue reading below to find out what the best-case scenario is for each ACC football program in 2021.

Pitt Panthers | 9-3 — It’s not crazy to think that Pitt could be 5-0 head into its bye week. From there, the schedule gets much tougher, but the Panthers would only need to go 4-3 down the stretch to reach nine wins.
Wake Forest Demon Deacons | 8-4 — The Demon Deacons always seem to be a tough out under head coach Dave Clawson. That should be the case again in 2021, which means Wake Forest should be in plenty of tough ACC battles. If they win more of those than they lose, eight wins isn’ out of the cards.
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets | 5-7 — The Yellow Jackets’ schedule this year doesn’t do them any favors. Georgia Tech faces some heavy hitters in Clemson, North Carolina, Miami, Notre Dame, and Georgia. Those games alone make it tough for Geoff Collins’ group to reach a bowl game.
Boston College Eagles | 9-3 — The Eagles had a pretty impressive first season under the leadership of head coach Jeff Hafley. Maybe they can parlay that into a few more wins in 2021. Boston College’s non-conference schedule isn’t all that strong, and it gets Missouri at home. The Eagles do kick off ACC play with a game against Clemson, but the rest of conference matchups are on the winnable side.
Syracuse Orange | 7-5 — The Orange are coming off a truly miserable 2020 season in which they went 1-10 with the only victory coming against Georgia Tech. That makes it hard to imagine a turnaround like this for Syracuse, but this is the best-case scenario. If Syracuse can go 3-1 in their non-conference slate, the Orange would only need to go .500 in conference play to reach seven wins.

Updated college football bowl projections entering summer (247sports.com; Crawford)

It's never too early to discuss college football's bowl season and with dozens of major programs expected to return to full capacities this fall, a return to normalcy will soon be upon us. College Football Playoff expansion has been one of the more popular topics since Alabama won its sixth national title under Nick Saban in January, but for now, the sport's decision-makers are happy with the current setup now entering its eighth year of a 12-year agreement.

At least 35 of the planned bowl games to end the 2021 season have not yet been scheduled, but those that have include the Outback Bowl and the contests that make up the New Year's Six. Next season's national championship finale will be played on Jan. 10, 2022 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

There's no exact science to projecting bowl matchups this far out from the start of the season, but if recent history is any indication, we have a pretty good idea of the teams who will get to six wins vs. the squads who will be in national title contention as elite-tier finishers.

Calculating 2020 T1, ACCN payouts (RX; HM)

Calculating 2020 T1, ACCN payouts

Is there enough information in this year's ACC tax return alone for us to figure out how much the ACCN paid out, in addition to how much the ACC's tier 1 tv contract increased when they extended it? Let's give it a go and see how much blood we can squeeze out of this turnip!

Here is a summary of my calculations in one table, for your convenience:

YearTV $MT1 $MT1 incrACCNTot $M
2014-2015$217.90$15.35$15.35
2015-16$226.10$15.92$0.58$15.92
2016-17$236.00$16.62$0.70$16.62
2017-18$277.20$16.52($0.10)$3.00$19.52
2018-19$288.60$17.32$0.80$3.00$20.32
2019-20$332.80$18.32$0.99$5.12$23.44
NOTE: T1 increase is year-over-year, estimated.
Apparently, Tier 1 TV payouts for 2014-15 were about $15.35 million per team, and have been steadily escalating (except for 2017-18) at a rate of 3.5% to 5.5% per year.

NYS Blues Festival returning with new location, vaccinated and unvaccinated sections (PS; $; Herbert)

The New York State Blues Festival is officially returning next month with a new location.

The 2021 NYS Blues Fest will take place June 24-26 at Chevy Court at the New York State Fairgrounds. It will be the first major music festival in the Northeast since Covid-19 largely shut down live events last year, including the 2020 Blues Fest.

Festival director Eric McElveen tells syracuse.com | The Post-Standard that the festival had to move from its usual site in Clinton Square due to road construction in downtown Syracuse. Moving it the NYS Fairgrounds also means they can have a greater capacity with vaccinated and unvaccinated sections.

“We want everybody to feel safe and feel comfortable. That’s part of the reason for the venue change,” McElveen said in a phone interview. “We’re very excited to be at the fairgrounds.”
