Welcome to Ballpoint Pen Day!

Ballpoint Pen Day celebrates the achievement of László and György Bíró, two Hungarian brothers who were the architects of the ballpoint pen. The consensus is that Ballpoint Pen Day takes place on June 10th because it was on June 10, 1943, that László Bíró applied for a patent for his pen.

László Bíró first tried to stop pens from smudging by attempting to use newspaper ink in fountain pens. This proved ineffectual as the ink was too thick for the pens. With the help of his brother, Bíró then created the ball and socket for the ballpoint pen. A metal ball at the end of the pen sat inside a socket, which allowed it to rotate. Quick-drying ink rolled onto the surface the pen was placed on, while more ink was gathered on the side of the ball that faced the inside of the pen, which then rolled onto the surface, repeating the process. Bíró invented his first ballpoint pen in 1931, which he showcased at the Budapest World Fair that year.

Class of 2022 OL Offered by Dream School Syracuse (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse extended a new offer on Wednesday to 6-7, 280 pound offensive tackle prospect David Conner out of Dr. Henry Wise High in Maryland.

"It was crazy man," Conner said. "I was about to get in the truck and my coach handed me the phone and said it was coach Monroe from Syracuse University. We talked, chopped it up, and he said, 'we’re offering you a full ride scholarship to Syracuse.' It was crazy because this is my first ACC offer and I have been trying to get this offer for months and I finally got it . I’m happy. This is amazing. I can’t wait to get on campus in two weeks."

The dates of that visit is still being finalized, but Conner is excited to get a closer look at Syracuse.

"That’s one of my dream schools and I really want to go there and be apart of something special when the time comes," Conner said. "Been following them for years and I just want to be apart of something great in the orange."

Conner said this was the first time he spoke with Syracuse assistant Nick Monroe, but had been in contact with defensive coordinator Tony White.

"Our relationship is really good he has been recruiting me for about a year now, and at first he didn’t like me," Conner said. "Because I held a lot and I quite frankly wasn’t a good offensive tackle. He told me I had a lot of things to work on if I ever wanted an offer from Syracuse University. And you know what I did ? I worked. Took everything that he said in account and grinned because I was determined to get this offer. And as you can see, now I got it."

In addition to Syracuse, Conner says Florida Atlantic, Jackson State, Alabama A&M, Morgan State and Georgia Tech are recruiting him hard.

Opponent Analysis: Virginia Tech Hokies — 2021 Syracuse Football preview - The Juice Online (the juice; Sear)

Can Braxton Burmeister Take The Next Step?

The biggest question facing the Hokies is at the most important position. With Hendon Hooker and Quincy Patterson transferring to Tennessee and North Dakota State respectively, the job is Burmeister’s to lose. He played well enough to win in limited work last season evidenced by his 3-1 record as a starter, but this was a run-first Tech team that averaged 240 rushing yards per game.

Burmeister has good legs for a quarterback, rushing for at least 35 yards in every game he appeared in, but with less than 170 passing yards in five of his seven contests, he has a lot of work to do from a throwing standpoint.

With running back Khalil Herbert drafted by the Bears, and three holes on the offensive line thanks to the NFL Draft and transfer portals, the pressure is on Burmeister to take a big step forward and develop more as a passer if the Hokies expect to be competitive in 2021.

NC State’s football season likely features a lot of toss-up games (backingthepack.com; Muma)

ESPN published Bill Connelly’s preview of the ACC Atlantic yesterday (it’s behind the paywall though), and while Clemson is of course well ahead of any other team in the division, SP+ sees the middle portion of the standings as a mess of toss-up games.

Here, for example, the games on NC State’s schedule where State’s estimated win probability is between 40-60%:

Relative toss-ups: Louisville (57%), at Wake Forest (57%), at Boston College (56%), at Florida State (53%), at Mississippi State (44%)

It’s worth noting, as Connelly does, that SP+ could be undervaluing NC State because it doesn’t take Devin Leary’s injury into account—if Leary improves while also playing a full season, that can make a big difference, and then maybe a couple of these games look more like should-wins.

But that’s a pretty good estimate of which games are going to determine how successful NC State is in 2021. I wish there weren’t quite so many of them on the road, but if the Pack is going to be as good as we all think it can be, that’s neither excuse nor impediment. (And it’s not like we have to worry about the environment at BC or Wake.)

Projecting ACC win totals for every team in 2021 (247sports.com; Gates)

For the last six seasons in the ACC, the Clemson Tigers have been the massive hurdle for the rest of the league to try and get over, but they have not been able to. Dabo Swinney and his program have dominated the league, winning the last six ACC titles and seven of the last 10 since he began coaching the program full-time. It doesn’t look like Clemson is slowing down anytime soon yet either.

The talent is going to continue rolling in, as Clemson’s 2021 recruiting class ranks fifth in the nation and first overall, headlined by five-star running back Will Shipley and others. And the 2022 recruiting class is off to a hot start as well, as Swinney has landed four commits from four-star prospects. So the question now is can anyone ever knock off the Tigers? If so, what are the chances that it will be this year?

A couple of ACC teams have emerged as possible competition for Clemson in the league this year because of the returning talent on their rosters as well. But are the experts expecting those teams to actually push Clemson?

When it comes to conference games only, via South Point Casino, here are the projections for every ACC team’s conference game win total in 2021.

BOSTON COLLEGE — 4

Perhaps this is the season that finally sees Boston College turn the corner when it comes to the rebuild of the program. Boston College had a back-and-forth season in 2020, never having consecutive wins or losses after a 2-0 start to the year. But still, the Jeff Hafley era would have started off with a bowl bid if the Eagles hadn’t decided to decline that option because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Hafley looks like he has things moving in the right direction and should be able to get the momentum rolling in the first few weeks of the season this year if he indeed does have it going that way.

PITTSBURGH — 4

Pittsburgh looks to carry its end-of-the-year success into 2021. After starting out 3-4, the Panthers won three of their last four games, with that only loss coming in a road game against Clemson, which nobody expected them to win. The Panthers return Kenny Pickett at quarterback, who threw for 2,408 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2020, so he should help the team get off to a strong start this season if he picks up where he left off. If the Panthers could knock off Tennessee in the second week of the season, they’d really grab people’s attention.

WAKE FOREST — 4.5

Dave Clawson looked like he had things rolling with four straight seasons of seven or more wins, but he then took a step back with just four this season and a loss in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. It was that bowl game where the Demon Deacons blew a 14-0 lead to lost by 14 to Wisconsin. It will be interesting to see how Clawson’s team responds to taking a slight step back in 2020, but there will be a little bit of time for Wake Forest to figure things out. The Demon Deacons get Old Dominion and Norfolk State, and then open ACC play with a Florida State team that finished low in the league last year.

GEORGIA TECH — 2.5

The clock might be ticking on Geoff Collins to start proving himself if he wants to remain the head coach at Georgia Tech. He’s been with the program for just two years but has yet to win more than three games in either of those two seasons. This past year, the Yellow Jackets never won back-to-back games either. The Yellow Jackets get no time to ease into the season either, as they’ll face Clemson in Week 3 and North Carolina a week after that. It doesn’t look like the 2021 season is going to get off on the right foot for Collins this season either.

SYRACUSE — 1.5

After winning 10 games in 2018, Dino Babers’ program has fallen apart. He won five games in 2019 and was able to win just one this past year, which came by 17 points against Georgia Tech. The Orange open up the year with a Power Five opponent in Week 2, facing a quickly rising Rutgers team and then they will face Liberty, who beat Syracuse last year. It’s looking like a massive uphill battle and simply put, when you win just one game the year prior, you’re going to be at the bottom of the power rankings, whether it’s based on opinion or on numbers like the FPI does.

ACC coach has questions about Uiagalelei (theclemsoninsider.com; Staff)

An ACC coach thinks the jury is still out on just how good D.J. Uiagalelei is.

Athlon Sports’ college football preview magazine includes anonymous quotes from coaches about other schools in their conference.

One coach was asked about Clemson’s new starting quarterback based on Uiagalelei’s small sample size from last season and seemed intrigued about the development of the Tigers’ offense under his leadership.

“The next man up at QB is really, really good,” the coach said. “I’m not sure if he’s the same sort of running threat that Trevor Lawrence was, which is something to watch.”

The coach questioned how offensive coordinator Tony Elliot will adjust the Clemson offense without Lawrence’s legs.

“I think it’s going to be a different offense because whenever they got in trouble or got out-schemed, they’d just run Trevor,” he said. “This kid is a giant, a very different athlete.”

One last hot, muggy day in Upstate NY before the cold front (PS; $; Coin)

If you’ve been wilting in the heat and humidity over the past week, we have good news for you.

“Those seeking relief from the heat and humidity can take comfort in knowing today will be the final day of the stretch of unseasonably warm and muggy conditions,” the National Weather Service in Albany reassures us. “The end of the week will feature cooler temperatures and much lower humidity.”

First, though, we have today, when it’s likely to climb into the upper 80s as we remain under the edge of the heat dome that brought the record-breaking temperatures of the past few days. The dewpoint, a measure of humidity, will be in the high 60s and even 70 degrees, defined by the weather service as “oppressive.”

That combination of heat and humidity will make it feel like 90 degrees or hotter late this afternoon. It will also bring a chance for scattered but intense thunderstorms that could cause minor flooding, especially if they drop rain on soils already saturated by Tuesday’s storms.
