Welcome to No Orange Clothes Day!

No Orange Clothes Day commemorates the day in 1784 when the wearing of orange was banned in the Netherlands, a country often informally called Holland. Such a thing seems unconscionable today, as orange is now seen as the unofficial color of the Netherlands, and is worn and displayed everywhere. The color has a long and varied history in the country, dating back to the sixteenth century.

Why did orange become associated with the Netherlands? Orange is the color of the Dutch royal family, and its association with them goes back to William of Nassau, who is also known as William the Silent or William of Orange. William became the Prince of Orange in 1544, at the age of eleven, when the principality of Orange—which had previously been a French principality—came under his control.

Thursday, June 10, 2021: Syracuse athletic director John Wildhack spoke with reporters about Gary Gaits move to lead the men's lacrosse team and vetting replacements for the women's team at Syracuse University. N. Scott Trimble | syracuse.comN. Scott Trimble | syracuse.com

Syracuse AD John Wildhack optimistic about full capacity for football: ‘Nothing but positive, positive news’ (PS; $; Carlson)

Syracuse University has been planning for months as if the school will be able to allow full attendance in the Carrier Dome during this coming football season.

Two recent announcements from New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo make that result appear very likely.

Cuomo announced on Monday that he will allow the New York State Fair to operate at 100 percent capacity. On Tuesday, he announced that 70 percent of adults in the state had received at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine, a threshold that resulted in a number of restrictions on businesses being removed.

The state is currently maintaining some restrictions on large-scale indoor event venues, defined as spaces that hold more than 5,000 people and even those spaces can reach 100 percent capacity with certain procedures in place. Those spaces must be able to ensure fans are either vaccinated or, if not, require a negative test result and enforce masking for those individuals.

All of that, Syracuse athletic director John Wildhack said during a press conference on Tuesday that, means that with just under months to go until the year’s first home football game things are trending in an optimistic direction for a football season without substantial attendance restrictions.

“It’s obviously great news, right?,” Wildhack said. “It’s great news for our community, great in terms of the economic impact to our area.

Opponent Analysis: Clemson Tigers — 2021 Syracuse Football preview - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

As we countdown to kickoff in September, we’re going to be doing a team-by-team opponent preview each week over the summer. This week, we’re previewing Syracuse’s matchup with Clemson on Oct. 15 with four major storylines.

Replacing Lawrence.

Trevor Lawrence is off to the NFL as the No. 1 overall pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars. And now the attention turns to his successor, D.J. Uiagalelei.

The five-star quarterback from the class of 2020 made two starts in the place of Lawrence when he was out due to COVID-19 protocols, and he impressed in games against Boston College and then-No. 4 Notre Dame.

In his first start against the Eagles, Uiagaelei threw for 342 yards and two touchdowns, and followed that up with 439 yards and two scores against the Fighting Irish, though the Tigers would lose that game 47-40 in double overtime.

Uiagaelei took first-team reps throughout spring, and played well in the spring game, competing 20 of 28 passes for 174 yards and a touchdown, though the coaching staff has been on him about using his athleticism more in the open field.

Regardless, it seems the offense is in very good hands.

Predicting every ACC team's final record in 2021 season (247sports.com; Nivision)

Six wins, and you’re postseason bound. There will be quite a few teams looking for that number this year in the ACC, and others that have their eyes set on much more.

There are still a few months before college football gets started, and things could change between now and then, but it’s never too early to start making predictions. Some ACC teams are set up for success this fall, while others have a tough road ahead in 2021. Of course, there are also schools that can come out of nowhere and exceed all expectations.

Continue reading below to see our predictions for each ACC program’s final record in the 2021 regular season.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons | 7-5 — Dave Clawson always fields a scrappy team at Wake Forest, and it’s not hard to see a path to bowl eligibility for the Demon Deacons in 2021. Prior to the pandemic-shortened season in 2020, Clawson won at least seven games in four straight years. Expect him to get back there this fall.
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets | 3-9 — Clemson, North Carolina, Miami, Notre Dame, and Georgia are all on Georgia Tech’s schedule this year. Those games alone will likely add five losses to the Yellow Jackets’ record. A road contest against Duke looks like Geoff Collins’ best shot to notch an ACC win in 2021.
Pitt Panthers | 7-5 — Unfortunately for the Panthers, they play arguably the ACC’s three best teams in the span of four weeks. The good news for Pitt is that Clemson, Miami, and North Carolina all have to come to Heinz Field. The Panthers will need to rack up some wins before that gauntlet begins.
Boston College Eagles | 8-4 — There’s a chance that the Eagles are 4-0 when they travel to Death Valley to play Clemson on Oct. 2. After surprising some people in 2020, Jeff Hafley’s team might be poised to take another step forward in 2021.
NC State Wolfpack | 8-4 — The Wolfpack’s season will be incredibly interesting because a number of games on their schedule will be considered toss-ups. However, NC State will be favored in enough of those coin flips to have a solid 2021 campaign if they win more of those than they lose.
Syracuse Orange | 2-10 — The Orange start their season with four straight non-conference games, and they would do well to split those because it will be tough sledding the rest of the way. Syracuse’s only conference win last year came against Georgia Tech, and the Yellow Jackets aren’t on the schedule this fall.

Louisville Football: 2021 Cardinals Season Preview and Prediction (athlonsports.com; Staff)

Louisville head coach Scott Satterfield has slipped into a "prove it" situation in his third season with the Cardinals.

Louisville went 8–5 in 2019, then slid to 4–7. Four coaches departed the staff. Two top offensive players left for the NFL without finishing the 2020 season. Satterfield was motivated to write a letter of apology to Louisville season-ticket holders after his bungled effort to be involved with the South Carolina job.

The gap between Louisville and Clemson has grown in the Atlantic Division, but the Cards must also climb back over NC State and Boston College while trying to replace their three most dynamic offensive playmakers. The outlook is cloudier than a year ago.

Previewing Louisville's Offense for 2021

After offensive coordinator Dwayne Ledford left for the Atlanta Falcons, Satterfield decided that he would direct the Louisville offense. His first job will be fixing quarterback Malik Cunningham. A year after performing like the third-best quarterback in the ACC, Cunningham had a season to flush. Not only did he throw a dozen interceptions, but Cunningham also lost three fumbles. At his best, Cunningham is a solid mid-range passer as well as a formidable runner. At the level he played last season, Cunningham is at risk of being replaced by Evan Conley. The quarterback needs to set the tone on turnovers. The Cards committed 24, leaving them No. 119 nationally in turnover margin at minus-12.

More Links - 2021 June 15th

Just a quick post...

Some industry experts believe the new 12-team CFP proposal would bring in as much as $1.9 billion in television rights fees [see What would a 12-team playoff be worth?] - an increase of about $10 to $11 million per school if it's divided equally among the 130 FBS teams. If the P5 get the lion's share again (like they did in the initial CFP contract), we could be talking an extra $12 million or more.

If you wonder why the P5 would be anxious to do this now, you just need to remember one thing: the P5 lost over $500 million due to the 2020 pandemic, with the Big Ten and SEC probably losing the most.

Former Nebraska QB Luke McCaffrey pivots, leaves Louisville for Rice

Former Nebraska quarterback Luke McCaffrey, who spent several months with Louisville this offseason, is transferring to Rice for the 2021 season...
McCaffrey announced in February that he would be transferring from Nebraska to Louisville, but he recently left the Cardinals' program after several days of workouts with the team. Louisville coach Scott Satterfield last week told ESPN Louisville that McCaffrey wants to be a starting quarterback and "after three or four days decided that maybe wasn't going to happen here."

Remember, young men: you get ONE free transfer going forward - after that, you'll have to sit out. Make up your mind before you transfer!

ACC bowls

TV:This year, every ACC bowl tie-in is set to be televised by ESPN except for the Sun Bowl (CBS), Holiday Bowl (FOX/FS1), and possibly the Outback Bowl (ESPN2) - if the latter selects an ACC team. It's a strange quirk that neither of the ACC/Pac-12 bowls are on ESPN.

Earliest/Latest: This year the ACC has one bowl (Garparilla) before Christmas, but none after New Year's Day - unless a team lands in the national championship, that is.
Prime Time: By the way, the Gasparilla Bowl is also the only one guaranteed to be played in prime time (it's not, however, 100% guaranteed to feature an ACC team). OK, the Cheez-It Bowl kicks off at 5:45 pm ET, so that's evening, if not technically prime time.
Noon-ish: In fact, this year could "feature" up to 10 ACC bowl games kicking off at or before 3:30 pm ET. That's the worst bowl schedule I can ever remember in terms of kickoff times.
Bottom Line: This is not the ACC's best bowl schedule by any means.

NCAA Basketball: Potential impact of collge football expanding the playoffs (bustingbrackets.com; Freeman)

When you look into the details of the playoff expansion and how the 12-team bracket works, an interesting point is made about who is eligible to go where.

6 highest ranked conference champs & next 6 highest ranked teams will make @CFBPlayoff. 4 highest-ranked conference champs seeded 1-4 will receive 1st-round bye. Teams 5-12 will play 1st round at home field of highest-ranked team. Notre Dame/Independents can’t get 1st round bye
— Brett McMurphy (@Brett_McMurphy) June 10, 2021

While Notre Dame is a member of the ACC for all of the Olympic sports, they’ve been an independent in college football since 1899. They’re one of the biggest and most prestigious names and currently have a lucrative deal with NBC for their games. The pandemic forced them to play a full ACC schedule, a league they have an agreement each year to play six games a year.

For independents, the new format has its positives and negatives. While there are six at-large spots, they’re ineligible to get a first-round bye as one of the top-4 seeds. The Fighting Irish can host a playoff game if seeded 5-8 but what if they’re truly the best or second-best team in the country? Their path to the national title would be unfair if they end up with the 1 seed in the semifinals.

After spending a year with ACC football, could Notre Dame make the move permanently? If they joined now, they’d be a top-3 team in the conference, just behind Clemson who they actually defeated last season. It would make sense to officially join and work out a deal with NBC to have the four non-conference games televised there, including the longstanding rivalry with the USC Trojans.

Ticks-1068x559.jpg

An explosion of ticks in Upstate NY is ‘worst-case scenario’ for Lyme disease (PS; $; Coin)

In May 2020, New York residents mailed 442 ticks to Upstate Medical University’s lab to test for diseases.

This May, the lab received 1,548 ticks – more than triple last year’s number.

“Ticks are exploding,” said Saravanan Thangamani, who runs the testing lab.

It gets worse: Not only are there more ticks this year, but a greater share of them carries microbes that make humans sick, especially the bacterium that causes Lyme disease.

In the first five months of 2020, 22.4% of the ticks tested by the lab carried at least disease-causing virus or bacterium, Thangamani said. In the first five months of this year, it was nearly 37%.

“The individual number of ticks is one concern,” Thangamani said, “but the bigger concern is that the prevalence of agents in these is pretty high.”

And a crash this year in the population of white-footed mice, the tick’s favorite source of blood, means an abundance of hungry ticks are seeking any warm-blooded animal they can find.
