Welcome to American Beer Day!

American Beer Day is a day dedicated to drinking brews made in America. Over 200 million barrels of American beer are sold each year, and Americans spend over $100 million on beer annually. The United States is only second to China in the number of breweries it has and the amount of beer it produces. Beer consumption in America has ebbed and flowed, but as of the late 2010s, beer has been flowing more than ever.

Beer making can be traced to about 6,000 years ago in ancient Sumeria. At that time, beer was cloudy because of the lack of filtering, and it was drunk through a straw. By 2000 BCE, the Babylonians were brewing twenty types of beer. The Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans made beer, although wine became much more popular with the Romans—they considered beer to be the drink of the Barbarians and it was only popular on the edges of the Empire. Germanic groups were brewing beer by 800 BCE.

Syracuse Football: Orange can make a bowl, but path is an arduous one (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football evened its overall record during the 2021 campaign at 4-4 after a magnificent victory on the road against Virginia Tech this past Saturday afternoon.

With four games left on the docket in the 2021 regular season, the Orange (4-4, 1-3) can reach a half-dozen victories, and hopefully secure a post-season bowl berth, by grabbing two more wins in its final quartet of Atlantic Coast Conference clashes.

Considering that the ‘Cuse managed just one triumph in all of the 2020 stanza, that we’re sitting here talking about the possibility of the Orange getting into a bowl this term is remarkable.

Conversely, what’s frustrating to me and many other Syracuse football fans is that the ‘Cuse is a few plays away from being much better than 4-4. Realistically, the Orange could be 6-2 or perhaps 7-1, and ranked in the major top-25 polls. Oh well.

Here’s how Syracuse football reaches six successes and lands in a bowl.

On Saturday, Oct. 30, the ‘Cuse hosts long-time rival Boston College. Then the Orange has a bye week. After that, Syracuse football makes a trip to Louisville on Saturday, Nov. 13.

A week later, on Saturday, Nov. 20, the ‘Cuse is at N.C. State. To wrap up the 2021 regular season, Syracuse football will take on another long-term rival, No. 17 Pittsburgh, in Central New York on Saturday, Nov. 27.

Let me first just say that those are four pretty tough league encounters for the Orange. If the ‘Cuse is able to pick up two conquests, that would be a sizable feat in my opinion, and Syracuse football would absolutely deserve to go bowling.

Dino Babers Discusses End of First Half Blunder vs Virginia Tech (SI; McAllister)

While Syracuse knocked off Virginia Tech 41-36 on Saturday, the Orange had a major blunder at the end of the first half that almost came back to haunt them. Trailing 19-13, a Garrett Shrader scramble set Syracuse up with a first and goal at the Hokies' one yard line with eight seconds left in the half. Syracuse called timeout to stop the clock and set up a play to get the ball in the end zone.

When the Orange ran onto the field, however, there was some confusion regarding personnel. That led to Syracuse calling a second timeout without running a play, its last of the half. After an incomplete pass and Virginia Tech timeout, Syracuse elected to kick a short 18 yard field goal. Andre Szmyt's kick bounced off the upright and Syracuse was held scoreless on the possession.

During his weekly press conference, Babers was asked about that situation.

"Here's the deal," Babers said. "I'm going to look at the cup being half full. I look at that situation and it was not clean, obviously. The second timeout was to clean it up. Because we had an opportunity to do something that would have been really, really good. After that, we came to a situation where we wanted to kick a field goal and the field goal was no good. I think that there were some mishaps. There were some miscommunications, obviously, and that's the reason why I went with the second timeout.

Dino Babers on Damien Alford's growth, Garrett Shrader's mobility, crux of Syracuse's special teams problem (247sports.com; Bailey)

Syracuse football head coach Dino Babers touched on a variety of topics during his weekly press conference on Monday. Speaking two days after his team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 41-36 victory at Virginia Tech, Babers touched on the two heroes from the contest -- wide receiver Damien Alford and quarterback Garrett Shrader -- as well as the special teams woes that nearly cost SU the game.

Here's a quick rundown of Babers' comments:

Alford still learning

Alford caught a 45-yard touchdown pass from Shrader with 19 seconds left that proved to be the game-winner in Blacksburg. It was a catch that the second-year Canadian said that he needed to make, as well as a play that builds confidence as Shrader -- the first-year starter who transferred in this spring from Mississippi State -- continues to develop a rapport with a balanced cast of pass-catchers.

Syracuse's clear-cut No. 1 receiver, Taj Harris, entered the transfer portal after Week 5.

"I think they realize there’s a vacuum and they realize there are opportunities to fill it," Babers said. "And everybody is working extremely hard from their standpoint and from a group standpoint to fill it. And I think so far, so good."

Alford's grab will garner spotlight -- stemming inside to get a step on his defender in the left slot, rising up above the Hokies defense back to catch the ball near its peak, galloping into the end zone as Shrader lay on the turf after taking a hard hit to the ribs. Babers, though, said the developing, big-bodied receiver is still working through the natural growing pains of being a young contributor.

He was, for instance, on a different page from Shrader just before halftime when Syracuse came away empty on a goal-to-go opportunity at the 1-yard line.

"He is the classic movie Bambi," Babers said. "You’ve got little Bambi and mom is taking care of him, right? And showing him the ropes. And then mom tells Bambi to run and mom doesn’t make it. And Bambi gets to the forest and then the big buck takes Bambi underneath his wings and Bambi grows into a big buck. Well, we don’t have that yet. We’ve still got Bambi with mom. And we’re looking forward to when he starts growing some horns.

"… He’s growing and he’s learning and he doesn’t even know what he’s capable of yet. But, hopefully, someday he does.

The win snapped a three-game losing skid and was SU’s fifth straight game decided by less than a touchdown. The team now prepares for Homecoming on Saturday against the Boston College Eagles. At 4-4, the Orange need to win at least two of their last four contests to become bowl-eligible.

Stock Up / Stock Down: Week 8 – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Eads)

It’s always more fun to take a trip to the stock market coming off a big win. Perhaps the market has more customers this week? Well let’s give the people what they want. The intel on who’s rising and who’s falling. If you bought stock in Sean Tucker or Garrett Shrader early on, you’re probably rich by now. So let’s find some more potential lucrative investments.

STOCK UP

QB GARRETT SHRADER

Was his stock down last week? Yes. However, there was a good reason to make that decision. Shrader was a non-factor as a runner against Clemson. Let’s be honest, the former four-star is not the type of quarterback that can move this offense by just throwing the ball. Was the 150+ yard rushing effort against Wake Forest an anomaly? Or was that output something to expect on a weekly basis? Well we now have our answer after Shrader led the team in rushing and crossed the century mark on the ground once again. Saturday marked the third time the signal caller has reached that mark in the last four games.

We have to give Shrader credit though. He passed for 236 yards against Virginia Tech. That marked a career high in his time at Syracuse. That output was also just two yards short of his best passing effort as a Bulldog.

WR/RET TREBOR PENA
Syracuse has its next ‘gadget’ player in Pena. The speedster has demonstrated his explosiveness as a kick/punt returner and a wide receiver. Last week we saw Pena score a long touchdown on a big reception in the fourth quarter.

This week the freshman failed to record a catch but he had a 17 yard run and a 51 yard kick return which swayed the momentum in SU’s favor. If Pena can provide a lift in the return game it can help this Syracuse offense astronomically. Great starting field position never hurts.

WR COURTNEY JACKSON
Another week, another new career set of career highs for Jackson. Seven catches for 86 yards for the slot receiver, oh and he also reeled in his first career touchdown against the Hokies. The Pennsylvania native is emerging as Shrader’s ‘security blanket’ and has flashed his ability as a reliable WR1 for this team. This is about as safe of an investment as there is.

Boston College @ Syracuse - Offense Preview (bcinterruption.com; Flannery)

Syracuse was expected to be a bottom-dweller of the ACC this season, but they managed to knock of Virginia Tech last week and have played FSU, Wake, and Clemson all within 3 points before eventually losing. The Orange aren’t a terrific team, but they’re a bunch of fighter not to be underestimated. Here’s what their offense has looked like so far.

Quarterback

Garrett Shrader is the starting QB for the Orange since their week 4 match-up with Liberty, when he took the offense to a higher level than it was under previous QB Tommy DeVito (or Tommy Defeato, if you like cruel nicknames). Shrader hasn’t been terrific, but the previous QB set a pretty low bar. He’s thrown for 180+ yards on average in each of his 4 ACC contests, The biggest upgrade has been the ability for Shrader to run. He ran for 137, 178, and 174 yards against FSU, Wake, and Virginia Tech respectively and has racked up 12 rushing TDs already. Given how badly BC struggled to contain Louisville’s mobile QB Malik Cunningham last week, Shrader could be in for a big day on the ground against the Eagles.

Running backs

While Shrader is already the team’s 2nd leading rusher after only starting the past 5 games, RB Sean Tucker is Syracuse’s clear lead back. Tucker already has over 1,000 yards on the year and shows no signs of slowing down. He’s had over 100 yards rushing in 7 of 8 games so far this season and has scored at least 1 rushing TD in 6 of those contests. Don’t think he’s enough of a threat yet? Tucker is also Syracuse’s 2nd leading receiver, catching 16 balls for 238 yards so far this year. It could be a miserable day on the ground for Boston College if Shrader and Tucker get hot.

Receivers

This is where the Orange are a bit lacking. They’ve only broken 200 yards receiving in one game so far (last week vs Virginia Tech) and they haven’t had a 100-yard performance by any receiver since Sean Tucker did it in week 3 against FCS squad Albany. The Orange have a bunch of somewhat capable guys who can catch the ball, and the passing has increased every week since Shrader took over starting QB duties, but it is just not the strength of this team. Expect BC to dare Syracuse to throw it into their strong defensive backfield.

On The Block On Demand 10-26 (ESPN; radio; Axe)

Brent starts the show explaining how the Heisman voting process works against Sean Tucker. Then, Tommy asks somewhere between three and six questions on The Blindside, including one about the worst baby name ever.

Syracuse's 1-2 punch of Tucker and Shrader tough to stop (AP; Kekis)

One wears No. 16, the other 34, though a lot of Syracuse fans wish that latter digit was 10 greater.

A year after the Orange suffered through an injury-riddled season that saddled them with 10 losses, new quarterback Garrett Shrader — he’s No. 16 — and record-setting tailback Sean Tucker have given the team a big jolt offensively and likely helped coach Dino Babers rest a little easier.

Syracuse (4-4, 1-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) is two wins from becoming eligible for the postseason, a significant turnaround from 1-10 in 2020.

Since Shrader replaced Tommy DeVito as the starter in Game 4 at home a month ago and led the Orange to a last-second victory over Liberty, the 6-foot-4, 230-pound transfer from Mississippi State of the Southeastern Conference has given the Orange something that’s been missing since Eric Dungey's career ended in 2018, something that was a big part of some of the program’s most successful seasons since the 1980s — a major running threat at quarterback. Think Don McPherson or Donovan McNabb.

In Saturday’s comeback win on the road over Virginia Tech, Schrader put up 411 yards offensively and was responsible for five touchdowns, running for three scores and 174 yards before throwing for two more in the final 2:28 to overcome a nine-point deficit. Tucker tacked on 112 yards and scored once in the 41-36 victory.

Their season totals are impressive.

Some numbers:

— The 5-10, 210-pound Tucker has gained 1,060 yards rushing, the only player in FBS this year to reach 1,000, his 1,298 all-purpose yards also lead the nation, and his six straight 100-yard games are a program record. He’s also averaging 6.1 yards per carry and his seven 100-yard games this season match a school record set in 1956 by Jim Brown, the man who started the tradition of greatness associated with Syracuse’s now retired No. 44, and equaled by Joe Morris (1979) and James Mungro (2001). It seems just a matter of time before Morris’ school season rushing record of 1,372 yards falls.

BC looks to win at Syracuse for third straight year - National Football Post (NFP; FLM)

Boston College and Syracuse renew their gridiron rivalry on Saturday afternoon when the Eagles visit the Orange in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup.

The longtime regional Big East rivals will meet for the 55th time and the third straight year inside the Carrier Dome.

While the Orange (4-4, 1-3 ACC) lead the all-time series 32-22, the Eagles (4-3, 0-3) have won the last two meetings and three of the past four.

Last season, Boston College held on for a 16-13 victory at Syracuse on Nov. 7 thanks to a pair of fourth-quarter field goals.

“We gotta compete with those guys, but we compete with a lot of other people as well. And the game’s a rivalry game, and it’s a recruiting battle as well,” Syracuse coach Dino Babers said. “But right now, it’s just a way for us to get one more win in the ACC.”

Syracuse is coming off a 41-36, come-from-behind victory at Virginia Tech last week. With just over five minutes remaining, the Orange trailed 36-27, but they rallied to take the lead on Garrett Shrader’s 45-yard TD pass to Damien Alford with 19 seconds remaining.

Shrader stuffed the stat sheet in the win, passing for 236 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 174 yards and three scores.

After an impressive 4-0 start, the Eagles have fallen back to the pack by suffering three consecutive losses, including a 28-14 defeat at Louisville last week.

Since losing starting quarterback Phil Jurkovec to a hand injury, Boston College has struggled to generate consistent offense under backup Dennis Grosel.

Grosel threw for 141 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions against the Cardinals. On the season, Grosel is averaging 160.4 passing yards per game and has thrown six TD passes and seven interceptions.

The three straight losses are a first under coach Jeff Hafley, whose team went 4-0 after defeats during his inaugural 6-5 season last year.

“I don’t want guys to change who they are,” Hafley said. “I want them to be (ticked) off — because I’m (ticked) off, and (the fans) should all be (ticked) off. But that doesn’t mean I turn into some raging lunatic. I think good leaders are guys that are consistent.”

The ACC in SP+, Week 8: Points are plentiful, as usual (backingthepack.com; Muma)

In several ways, this is an ideal ACC football season, at least from my narrow fan-based perspective: there is no dominant team, there’s plenty of offense, just about everyone is competitive, and Duke has reclaimed tomato-can status.

Now, not all of these circumstances are helpful for what NC State is trying to accomplish this season—Wake has the good fortune to have Duke on its schedule, for instance—but from an entertainment perspective, this type of year is tough to beat.

I mean, Pittsburgh is probably the best team in the league this year, with a Heisman candidate at quarterback. What is this, 1980?

Around the ACC: Week 9 (SI; Bowles)

The Seminoles are preparing to make the trip to Death Valley Saturday as they face Clemson for the first time since 2019. For the rest of the Atlantic Coast Conference, the divisional race is becoming more clear in the Atlantic and Coastal. Wake Forest and NC State are on a collision course in the Atlantic, while the Coastal seems to be in the hands of Pittsburgh, with Virginia not far behind.

Below, I listed each conference game and wrote a short preview on where each program stands.

Atlantic:

Syracuse (4-4) vs Boston College (4-3) - Saturday, 3:30 p.m.

The Orange, who had lost their previous three games by a combined nine points, finally earned a win last Saturday. Head coach Dino Barbers and Syracuse defeated Virginia Tech 41-36. Running back Sean Tucker ran for 112 yards for one touchdown. Tucker has hit the century mark on the ground in six consecutive games.

Boston College has lost three straight, including a 28-14 loss to Louisville last Saturday. When these two met in 2020, the Eagles won 16-13.

NC State (5-2) vs. Louisville (4-3) - Saturday, 7:30 p.m.

The Wolfpack traveled to South Florida and dropped a 31-30 cross-divisional game to Miami. In order to catch up to Wake Forest for first in the division, NC State must win out and hope for some luck.

After a 28-14 win against Boston College, head coach Scott Satterfield and the Cardinals are back in the win column after dropping two games straight. Louisville had two 100 yard rushers in quarterback Malik Cunningham (16 attempts, 133 yards, three touchdowns) and running back Trevion Cooley (13 attempts, 112 yards).

ESPN to Offer ACC Football Game In 4K - The TV Answer Man! (tvanswerman.com; TVASM)

TV Answer Man, do you know what the ESPN 4K game of the week is during this week? — Teresa, Reno, Nevada.

Teresa, as you note, ESPN does one game per week in 4K during the college football season. The 4K broadcast is available on special 4K channels from select pay TV providers, including DIRECTV, Verizon and YouTube TV. (Unlike Fox, ESPN does not provide a 4K stream on its app, ESPN+.)

And this week’s ESPN 4K game is…Florida State vs. Clemson in an all Atlantic Coast Conference matchup which begins Saturday (October 30) at 3:30 p.m. ET. Clemson enters the game with a 4-3 record while Florida State is 3-4. If you’re the wagering type, Clemson is a 10-point favorite.

ESPN will simulcast the game in HD on the main ESPN channel. Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III will join Mark Jones and Quint Kessenich on the call for the sports network.

By the way, ESPN’s 4K broadcasts are ‘native 4K,’ meaning it’s produced in the format on site as well as transmitted to the home in 4K. In contrast, Fox produces its live sporting events in 1080p HD and upscales them to 4K for the home tranmission.
Many videophiles say the upscaled 4K picture is not as sharp as the native 4K image. But the inclusion of HDR can offer heightened colors and vividness. ESPN’s 4K broadcast does not include HDR.

Teresa, hope that helps. Happy viewing, and stay safe!

Suddenly there's a surge in Syracuse restaurants named 'Luna something.' What's up with that? (PS; $; Cazentre)

If you’re planning to check out that new place called “Luna something” in or near downtown Syracuse, you better make sure you know where you’re going.

Three food establishments that have opened in Syracuse in the past few months start with the word “Luna.” They are not related.

The first was Luna Loca. It opened in June at 304 E. Onondaga St. near Columbus Circle. It’s in the spot that had been home to The Mission Restaurant for many years. It offers California-Tex-Mex cuisine.

Then, last month, the Luna Cafe, a restaurant with a cat lounge (yes that means there are felines on the premises), opened at 1001 E. Fayette St. just north of the Syracuse University campus. The food, which includes signature meatballs, is served in a separate space from the cats.

Finally (we think), Luna Food Lover opened earlier this month at 105 W. Fayette St. in downtown Syracuse. It’s a fast-serve, grab-and-go place that offers sandwiches, a pasta bar and more in the spot that had been a Jimmy John’s.

“It’s hilarious”, Luna Cafe owner Josh Davis said. “My family told me, ‘You lived there for 18 years with no place called Luna, and then you open one when everyone has a place called Luna.’ ”

How did this happen?

Luna, the Latin word for moon, has certainly become a popular name. It’s trendy with pets and may be the most popular name for baby girls in 2021 according to some reports. Perhaps that started when model Chrissy Teigen and singer John Legend named their daughter Luna five years ago.

But restaurants?

“I didn’t know there were other Lunas in Syracuse when I picked the name,” said Shadi Tabala, owner of Luna Food Lover. The name, he said, is inspired by his daughter. Her given name is Lina, but the family often calls her Luna.

Davis said he named his cafe after his cat. That Luna is 18 years old “and still kicking,” he said. “How could I not name it after her?” he said.

The origin of Luna Loca is a little more complicated, said Ryan Benz, who owns that restaurant with his wife, Leigh Ann. Luna Loca means “crazy moon.”
