Does next year look any better? (PS; $; Carlson) The Syracuse football team started the season near the bottom of this list and it will finish that way too, moving up just one spot over the course of the season from No. 13 to No. 12 after finishing the year with three consecutive lopsided losses. Syracuse started slowly, built up hope in the middle and then struggled late, as injuries mounted and the Orange faced a stretch of three straight upper-half teams. I’ve included where I projected teams at the start of the season, so you can decide for yourself whether it’s worth following this list next year or if you want to get your insight somewhere else, as well as a little bit about what seems to lie ahead for each program. My biggest misses were at the top, where both Pittsburgh and Wake Forest surprised. I was pretty accurate at the bottom, much to the dismay of Syracuse fans, who will likely wind up hoping that trend doesn’t continue next year. [HEADING=1]1. Pittsburgh suffered its annual two head-scratching defeats to inferior teams but I didn’t anticipate the Panthers being good enough to beat everyone else on its schedule thanks to its customary run-stopping defense and the ACC’s best quarterback. The Panthers will lose future ACC Player of the Year Kenny Pickett but their success under esteemed offensive coordinator Mark Whipple will likely make Pitt an interesting place for any desirable transfer quarterback on the marker this offseason, and landing one should keep expectations high. 2. Syracuse won’t play football again until Sept. 10, 2022, against the UCONN Huskies. [HEADING=2]Offensive rhythmic woes[/HEADING] Syracuse’s defense held the Panthers’ offense, which averaged 43.9 points per game before playing the Orange, to 31 points and 333 total yards. SU appeared to solve its early scoring troubles after Courtney Jackson‘s opening drive TD to go ahead 7-0. But Garrett Shrader, who threw two touchdowns and 217 yards, and Sean Tucker, who gained just 29 yards on 13 touches, struggled to gain momentum after that. Jackson led all receivers with eight catches for 92 yards and two scores. The Orange only rushed for 25 yards on 30 carries between Shrader and Tucker. “I think we found a rushing attack (this season). I think we need to have an opportunity to be able to throw the ball, to match that so we can become more balanced and unpredictable,” head coach Dino Babers said. “(Pitt) is a good run-stop defense, but what they were giving us was massive throws all over the football field which we need to be able to take advantage of.” [HEADING=2]A senior send-off[/HEADING] Syracuse football recognized eight seniors who played their last game in an Orange jersey on Saturday night. No one had a bigger impact this season than defensive lineman Cody Roscoe, a transfer from McNeese State, who finished his second season in Syracuse with 7.5 sacks and 45 tackles. Offensive tackle Aaron Servais ended his Orange career with 60 consecutive starts: the longest active streak among FBS offensive linemen. “(We’re) obviously disappointed about the loss but really excited about the bridge that our super seniors left us,” Babers said. “They gave us an opportunity to rebound from that COVID year, that asterisk year, to get us back to where we can start to do some things.” ... Axe: Are Syracuse football fans buying what John Wildhack is selling? (PS; $; Axe) John Wildhack was at the podium again on Monday. If you play the first 12 really well the 13th game could be an ACC championship game and then you can play beyond that.” Wildhack cited progress by the Orange running game and defense, the potential of 18 of 22 starters returning and the competitive nature of the ACC, where Syracuse was one of seven teams to finish with either a 5-7 or 6-6 record, as reasons to stay the course. ... ACC Football Power Rankings, Nov. 29: Wake & Pitt get ready for title bout - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger) Here are the final ACC Power Rankings of the 2021 season — topped by the two teams headed to league’s title match. [HEADING=2]1. They represent our students, our University, our Oakland community and our City. An ACC championship for Pitt football is a reflection on us all.” Pitt earned its place in the 2021 ACC Football Championship Game with a 48-38 win over the University of Virginia on Nov. 20. They will play Wake Forest, the winner of the ACC Atlantic Division, at 8 p.m. on Dec. 4 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. Pitt - yes, the "Backyard Brawl" was a pretty good series, but let's be honest, that game was only moved to Rivalry Week when the Pitt/Penn State series was halted. The "Keystone Classic" is the REAL rivalry! Syracuse - I have no problem with Orange vs. Nittany Lions, but if Penn State is going to agree to a non-conference rivalry game, they have one far more important (see previous). So, which other team(s) might Syracuse play as an OOC rival? Plenty! I like Northwestern, Stanford, and USC from a cultural point of view, and if you're looking at geography, Rutgers makes a lot of sense. Boston College and Miami - BGB must've been thinking of Flutie-to-Phelan, but those days are long gone. If anything, BC vs. Syracuse makes a lot of sense; that game is played annually, and it's usually pretty good. As for the Hurricanes, while BC isn't a bad rival, a better one might be Houston or TCU. Notre Dame - for the Irish, Michigan State is too "friendly" to be a true rivalry. Yes, they've played almost 80 times, and yes, many of those games were quite good, but... if you want a pure hate-fest, this needs to be Notre Dame vs. Michigan. Maryland - this former ACC team should get away this easily! Navy may be in-state, but their rivals are Army and Air Force! The Terps, on the other hand, need to face a former rival from the current ACC. The Virginia Cavaliers are the obvious choice, but if you want to think outside the box, how about Virginia Tech, NC State, or even Miami? ... JHowell's 2021 FCG Picks (RX; HM) [HEADING=2]JHowell's 2021 FCG Picks[/HEADING] Below are the projections through the games of 12-4-21.
