Welcome to National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day!
On the morning of December 7, 1941, Japan launched a surprise attack on Naval Station Pearl Harbor, located in Honolulu, Hawaii, on the island of Oahu. National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day remembers and honors the 2,403 citizens of the United States who lost their lives there that day. Veterans and citizens have commemorated the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor since it took place, but the day became an official observance when Congress designated the day with a joint resolution on October 3, 1984. The resolution authorized and requested the President to issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States "to observe this solemn occasion with appropriate ceremonies and activities" and "to pledge eternal vigilance and strong resolve to defend this Nation and its allies from all future aggression." Accordingly, President Ronald Reagan issued Proclamation 5286 on December 4, 1984. Subsequent Congresses and presidents have passed resolutions and issued proclamations for the day. On the day, flags are flown at half-staff until sunset to honor those who died from the attacks. Events, including a commemoration ceremony, are held at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial.

With the Seattle Seahawks almost out of the playoffs, is it former Syracuse football star Alton Robinson’s time to shine?
The former Orange defensive end hasn’t gotten a lot of playing time this season, despite showing his potential when he’s on the field. He’s averaging less than 30% of snaps per game, according to lineups.com, but still has 19 tackles this year plus a sack and a forced fumble.
The Seahawks beat the 49ers on Sunday, improving to 4-8 this season and just barely keeping their NFL playoff hopes alive. (Seattle currently has a 3% chance of making the postseason, according to FiveThirtyEight.)
Sports Illustrated reports Seattle should focus on team-building for 2022 and beyond, allowing younger players like Robinson, 23, to get more playing time.
“If there’s one player who deserves the chance to start and showcase his skill set over the final (five) weeks, it’s criminally underutilized defensive end Alton Robinson. Newly crowned Atlantic Coast Conference champion Pittsburgh headlines The Associated Press All-ACC teams and individual awards for the 2021 season.
The 13th-ranked Panthers had a league-best seven selections in results released Monday after voting by 14 sports writers who cover the conference. That list included quarterback Kenny Pickett as the unanimous choice for offensive player of the year, as well as national receiving touchdown leader Jordan Addison being an unanimous first-team pick at receiver.
Pittsburgh won the program’s first ACC championship on Saturday night by beating No. 20 Wake Forest 45-21 in Charlotte. Demon Deacons coach Dave Clawson was voted as league coach of the year, while Florida State defensive end Jermaine Johnson II was named top defensive player and Miami freshman quarterback Tyler Van Dyke was chosen top newcomer.
Syracuse running back Sean Tucker, North Carolina State offensive lineman Ikem Ekwonu and Wake Forest kicker Nick Sciba joined Pickett, Addison and Johnson as unanimous picks to the 51-player squad. Clemson tied Pittsburgh with seven selections, while Wake Forest and N.C. State each had six picks.

Former Florida State quarterback offered by ACC school (SI; Lewis)
The Transfer Portal is mutually beneficial to schools and players. Schools can add experienced college talent while players can transfer to different situations to try and earn more playing time. Former Florida State quarterback Chubba Purdy made his decision to enter the portal on November 3 after spending the majority of his first two seasons in Tallahassee as a backup.
The Arizona native was anticipated to possibly make the quarterback battle interesting as a true freshman after he signed with Florida State over Louisville in December 2019. Instead, Purdy suffered a collarbone injury during fall camp and was unable to suit up until November. He ended up appearing in three games and starting one while recording 219 passing yards with two touchdowns and an interception.
Over the offseason, Purdy was limited by his reaggravated collarbone injury. He was not with the team in the spring while rehabbing. Purdy returned to the team over the summer and was cleared to participate in August.
Purdy only saw playing time in one game during the 2021 season in reserve duty. He went 5/5 for 98 yards and two touchdowns in a 59-3 victory over Massachusetts. Outside of that, the majority of the snaps went to starter Jordan Travis and veteran McKenzie Milton.
The 6-foot-2, 215-pound quarterback would've battled with Travis for the starting job in 2022. Instead, he's looking for a new situation where he can make his mark. On Monday night, Purdy was offered by another program in the ACC, the Pittsburgh Panthers.

Reports: Emmett Jones leaving KU football; Lance Leipold hiring Syracuse's Terrence Samuel (kusports.com)
The interim head coach for Kansas football this past spring and the Jayhawks’ receivers coach each of the past three seasons, Emmett Jones reportedly is leaving the program to return to Texas Tech.
RedRaiderSports.com reported early Monday evening Tech and new head coach Joey McGuire are set to hire Jones as the Red Raiders’ next receivers coach. That news came shortly after another report, from Yahoo Sports’ Pete Thamel, that KU head coach Lance Leipold was hiring Syracuse receivers coach Terrence Samuel.
Jones, a Dallas native and key recruiter during his time at KU was hired by former coach Les Miles. Jones was a Texas Tech staff member from 2015-18.
Both Leipold and Samuel were assistants at Nebraska-Omaha during the 2004 and 2005 seasons. KU has not yet announced the hire, nor the departure of Jones.
Thamel labeled Samuel’s role at KU as an offensive staff position. With Jones reportedly leaving, Samuel would logically step in to replace him as receivers coach.
Prior to coaching Syracuse’s receivers this past season, Samuel was UNLV’s passing game coordinator and receivers coach in 2020, after spending 2011-19 at Michigan State, where he coached receivers the first eight years and defensive backs in 2019. Going further back, he coached running backs at Nebraska-Omaha in 2007, and defensive backs, outside linebackers and special teams between 2003 and 2005 at Nebraska-Omaha.
Jones was coming up on the end of the second and final guaranteed year on his contract with KU. Jones signed a restructured, six-year deal late in 2019. The final date of the second year is Feb. 28, 2022. KU Athletics holds options on additional years for the assistant.
Jones’ deal came with a hefty $600,000 buyout. Because his deal has not yet expired, Texas Tech would need to facilitate Jones’ buyout for that sum, barring some form of settlement between KU Athletics and the departing assistant.
This past offseason, KU Athletics and former offensive coordinator Brent Dearmon settled on a $100,000 buyout when Dearmon left for Middle Tennessee State. The figure was substantially less than the $500,000 buyout detailed in his contract.
Two days after the 2021 KU football season ended, Leipold announced other staffing changes, as the program moved on without defensive line coach Kwahn Drake and cornerbacks coach Chevis Jackson — both of whom were hired by former head coach Les Miles.

Pat Narduzzi and the Pitt coaching staff lost a key 2022 recruit on Monday, as Jordaan Bailey, a running back out of Hillsborough High School in Tampa, Florida, who committed to Pitt in June, decommitted from the program.
The 6’1”, 180-pound running back is a three-star recruit, and all three major recruiting outlets consider him one of the top 75 running backs in the country. ESPN ranks him No. 66 at his position, while Rivals places him at No. 50 and 247Sports has Bailey at No. 36.
In 2021, Bailey amassed 1,042 yards from scrimmage and 11 total touchdowns for a Hillsborough team that went 10-3. It was the third time in three years that Bailey was able to accrue 1,000 scrimmage yards.

Advisory for Syracuse area, surrounding counties calls for up to 5 inches of snow (PS; O'Toole)
The National Weather Services has extended its winter weather advisory to now include Syracuse and a number of surrounding counties, predicting up to 5 inches of snow and gusting winds.
The advisory, in effect from 8 p.m. Monday until 3 p.m. Tuesday, covers Onondaga County as well as Madison and southern Oneida counties.
There also is a winter weather advisory for Oswego, Lewis and Jefferson counties from 8 p.m. Monday until 4 p.m. Tuesday. Up to 8 inches of snow could fall in higher elevations, such as the Tug Hill Plateau. Wind gusts could reach 50 mph in Oswego, Lewis and Jefferson counties.
In Syracuse, Hamilton, Oneida, Rome and Utica, up to 5 inches of snow is possible, according to the weather service. The winds also will be strong, with gusts up to 45 mph.
“The hazardous conditions could impact the morning commute,” the weather service said. “Plan on slippery road conditions.”
Gusting winds Monday night likely will “cause areas of blowing snow” overnight, but by Tuesday morning the winds will diminish to under 10 mph, according to the weather service.

Former Florida State quarterback offered by ACC school (SI; Lewis)
The Transfer Portal is mutually beneficial to schools and players. Schools can add experienced college talent while players can transfer to different situations to try and earn more playing time. Former Florida State quarterback Chubba Purdy made his decision to enter the portal on November 3 after spending the majority of his first two seasons in Tallahassee as a backup.
The Arizona native was anticipated to possibly make the quarterback battle interesting as a true freshman after he signed with Florida State over Louisville in December 2019. Instead, Purdy suffered a collarbone injury during fall camp and was unable to suit up until November. He ended up appearing in three games and starting one while recording 219 passing yards with two touchdowns and an interception.
Over the offseason, Purdy was limited by his reaggravated collarbone injury. He was not with the team in the spring while rehabbing. Purdy returned to the team over the summer and was cleared to participate in August.
Purdy only saw playing time in one game during the 2021 season in reserve duty. He went 5/5 for 98 yards and two touchdowns in a 59-3 victory over Massachusetts. Outside of that, the majority of the snaps went to starter Jordan Travis and veteran McKenzie Milton.
The 6-foot-2, 215-pound quarterback would've battled with Travis for the starting job in 2022. Instead, he's looking for a new situation where he can make his mark. On Monday night, Purdy was offered by another program in the ACC, the Pittsburgh Panthers.

Reports: Emmett Jones leaving KU football; Lance Leipold hiring Syracuse's Terrence Samuel (kusports.com)
The interim head coach for Kansas football this past spring and the Jayhawks’ receivers coach each of the past three seasons, Emmett Jones reportedly is leaving the program to return to Texas Tech.
RedRaiderSports.com reported early Monday evening Tech and new head coach Joey McGuire are set to hire Jones as the Red Raiders’ next receivers coach. That news came shortly after another report, from Yahoo Sports’ Pete Thamel, that KU head coach Lance Leipold was hiring Syracuse receivers coach Terrence Samuel.
Jones, a Dallas native and key recruiter during his time at KU was hired by former coach Les Miles. Jones was a Texas Tech staff member from 2015-18.
Both Leipold and Samuel were assistants at Nebraska-Omaha during the 2004 and 2005 seasons. KU has not yet announced the hire, nor the departure of Jones.
Thamel labeled Samuel’s role at KU as an offensive staff position. With Jones reportedly leaving, Samuel would logically step in to replace him as receivers coach.
Prior to coaching Syracuse’s receivers this past season, Samuel was UNLV’s passing game coordinator and receivers coach in 2020, after spending 2011-19 at Michigan State, where he coached receivers the first eight years and defensive backs in 2019. Going further back, he coached running backs at Nebraska-Omaha in 2007, and defensive backs, outside linebackers and special teams between 2003 and 2005 at Nebraska-Omaha.
Jones was coming up on the end of the second and final guaranteed year on his contract with KU. Jones signed a restructured, six-year deal late in 2019. The final date of the second year is Feb. 28, 2022. KU Athletics holds options on additional years for the assistant.
Jones’ deal came with a hefty $600,000 buyout. Because his deal has not yet expired, Texas Tech would need to facilitate Jones’ buyout for that sum, barring some form of settlement between KU Athletics and the departing assistant.
This past offseason, KU Athletics and former offensive coordinator Brent Dearmon settled on a $100,000 buyout when Dearmon left for Middle Tennessee State. The figure was substantially less than the $500,000 buyout detailed in his contract.
Two days after the 2021 KU football season ended, Leipold announced other staffing changes, as the program moved on without defensive line coach Kwahn Drake and cornerbacks coach Chevis Jackson — both of whom were hired by former head coach Les Miles.

This time the rumors were true. Miami has replaced Manny Diaz with Mario Cristobal, formerly Head Coach of the Oregon Ducks. Here it is from the horse's mouth...Cristobal just had his Ducks team in the Pac-12 championship game (they lost - badly - to Utah). He is considered to be an excellent recruiter and far more experienced than Diaz, who was about to begin his first job as a head football coach when Miami hired him (see: Temple).
The Hurricanes have scheduled a press conference to announce the new football coach...

We mentioned in a previous post that the Fighting Irish finally have what appears to be a favorable match-up in a New Year's Six Bowl game: Oklahoma State, in the Fiesta Bowl. A slam dunk? No, but a slight favorite (by one point, according to JHowell's computer).We also mentioned that are on a lengthy losing streak when it comes to NY6 Bowl games. In fact, the Irish have lost 8 straight New Year's Six or BCS Bowl games, dating back to the 1994-95 Fiesta Bowl loss to Colorado. The last time the Golden Domers actually won a major bowl is either the 1993-94 Cotton Bowl win over Texas A&M (not recognized as a major at the time) or the 1991-92 Sugar Bowl win over the Florida Gators. While I like a good streak as well as the next fan, I feel like this is the year Notre Dame can finally get the monkey off their backs. Despite losing their head coach, I feel good because the rest of the Irish coaching staff remained intact.

would be a good hire. His defense only gave up 22 more yards per game with Syracuse talent and playing the same schedule. know he's given us fits. In 2019, even with Trevor, it took a while for our offense to get going. Then again, with TE our offenses, even with Trevor, would have long dry spells. But the Syracuse defensive coordinator has put up some good numbers. |

Jordaan Bailey backs off of commitment to Pitt (cardiachll.com; Wilson)
Pat Narduzzi and the Pitt coaching staff lost a key 2022 recruit on Monday, as Jordaan Bailey, a running back out of Hillsborough High School in Tampa, Florida, who committed to Pitt in June, decommitted from the program.
“First and foremost, I would like to thank the head man, Coach [Pat] Narduzzi and Coach [Cory] Sanders and Coach [Andre] Powell also Coach Graham [Wilbert] for taking their time recruiting me and believing in me when I didn’t believe in myself and building such an amazing bond with me,” Bailey said. “After a long talk with my family, I decided to decommit from [the University of Pittsburgh].”
The 6’1”, 180-pound running back is a three-star recruit, and all three major recruiting outlets consider him one of the top 75 running backs in the country. ESPN ranks him No. 66 at his position, while Rivals places him at No. 50 and 247Sports has Bailey at No. 36.
In 2021, Bailey amassed 1,042 yards from scrimmage and 11 total touchdowns for a Hillsborough team that went 10-3. It was the third time in three years that Bailey was able to accrue 1,000 scrimmage yards.

Advisory for Syracuse area, surrounding counties calls for up to 5 inches of snow (PS; O'Toole)
The National Weather Services has extended its winter weather advisory to now include Syracuse and a number of surrounding counties, predicting up to 5 inches of snow and gusting winds.
The advisory, in effect from 8 p.m. Monday until 3 p.m. Tuesday, covers Onondaga County as well as Madison and southern Oneida counties.
There also is a winter weather advisory for Oswego, Lewis and Jefferson counties from 8 p.m. Monday until 4 p.m. Tuesday. Up to 8 inches of snow could fall in higher elevations, such as the Tug Hill Plateau. Wind gusts could reach 50 mph in Oswego, Lewis and Jefferson counties.
In Syracuse, Hamilton, Oneida, Rome and Utica, up to 5 inches of snow is possible, according to the weather service. The winds also will be strong, with gusts up to 45 mph.
“The hazardous conditions could impact the morning commute,” the weather service said. “Plan on slippery road conditions.”
Gusting winds Monday night likely will “cause areas of blowing snow” overnight, but by Tuesday morning the winds will diminish to under 10 mph, according to the weather service.
