Welcome to Monkey Day!

Monkey Day celebrates not only monkeys, but all simians, which include New World monkeys, Old World Monkeys, and apes. The day exists to bring awareness to the animals, and to show love and care for them. It was created by artists Casey Sorrow and Eric Millikin, when they were art students at Michigan State University in 2000. At first the day was celebrated by students at MSU, but it eventually gained a wider following after its creators' artwork and alternative comics, which featured Monkey Day, were published online and at exhibits. Today it is celebrated all around the world.

Syracuse National Signing Day Preview (SI; McAllister)

National Signing Day is rapidly approaching as college football programs across the country add to their rosters for the upcoming season. The Syracuse Orange has a bit more up in the air than in typical years, so here is a look at who is deciding during the early period, which commits are signing early versus late, and when players can sign.

EARLY SIGNING PERIOD

Starting at 7:00 a.m. Eastern, recruits can start sending in their signed National Letters of Intent. A signed letter is a binding commitment to that school by the player to officially join that respective program. While the common term is National Signing Day, the signing period actually stretches beyond just a single day. The early signing period starts on Wednesday, December 15th (National Signing Day) and goes until Friday, December 17th. That means recruits can sign anytime during that period.

DECISIONS, DECISIONS

Here is a list of Syracuse recruiting targets making a decision on National Signing Day or during the early period.

LB Kadin Bailey: Bailey is the son of former Georgia All-American linebacker Boss Bailey and nephew of NFL Hall of Fame defensive back Champ Bailey. He took an official visit to Syracuse in early December. He has also taken an official to Kansas State, and holds an offer from Tennessee.

QB Henry Belin: Belin has been committed to Duke since the summer. However, with their recent coaching change, whether or not Belin signs is up in the air. If he does, that is that and he will be a Blue Devil. If he does not, other schools could look to get back involved. Since the Orange recruited him previously and SU still needs a quarterback, this would be a situation to watch.

DE Denis Jaquez: One of the top defensive linemen in New Jersey, Jaquez had been committed to Northwestern for months. However, he announced his decommitment on Monday following an official visit to Syracuse. Jaquez also holds offers from Boston College, Maryland, Rutgers, Texas A&M, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest.

LB Garrison Madden: Madden took official visits to Syracuse and South Florida in early December before an offer from USC sparked an official visit this past weekend. He is expected to decide between those three schools on Signing Day.

OL Terrance McClain: The junior college offensive lineman was offered by Syracuse very late in the cycle, but never took a visit. He has a top five of Jackson State, Memphis, Utah State, Syracuse and East Carolina.

WR Chris Reed: The Utah commit was originally scheduled to take an official visit to Syracuse in December. However, following a trip to Utah, he cancelled the visit. If he elects not to sign early, perhaps the Orange could get a visit in January.

Which Class of 2022 prospects plan to sign early with Syracuse football? (247sports; $; Bailey)

Syracuse football will officially add its first wave of scholarship athletes for the 2022 cycle on Wednesday when the early signing period begins. The Orange currently has 10 high school seniors committed to its program -- a lower total than usual at this stage, but that trend extends nationwide as coaching staffs account for the boom in transfer availability.

Here's a look at who has confirmed they'll sign with the Orange this week. This list will be updated as news comes in:

SYRACUSE FOOTBALL: SIGNING DAY Wednesday December 15th 1 PM EST

A breakdown of Syracuse football's 2022 class - The Juice Online (the juice; podcast; Cheng)

The early signing period for college football is on Wednesday, and to see where Syracuse stands, we spoke to 247 Sports and CuseNation.com’s Stephen Bailey on this week’s The Juice on the Cuse Podcast, presented by SNY.tv.

Syracuse has only 10 commitments so far, and Bailey breaks down why the Orange has such a small class this season and whether it’s cause for concern.

Still, Bailey says that even with the lower amount of commits, some of the class may be ready to play right away, such as defensive back Dom Foster, one of Syracuse’s top rated recruits in this cycle.

Another class of 2022 prospect to watch for is running back LeQuint Allen, especially considering SU only has three scholarship running backs. He was recently named Gatorade Player of the Year in New Jersey.

The Orange will also be taking a class look in the transfer portal with a focus on the offensive and defensive lines, Bailey says. Recently, SU offered transfers Jared Verse and Tillman Weaver.

Bailey also chats about several other transfers in the portal who would be good fits with SU like one time commit Willie Tyler.

» Related: Syracuse continues to pursue Tapuvae Amaama, Avery Powell, Denis Jaquez

Finally, the Orange will likely add a few more 2022 recruits. One such potential flip will be New Jersey DL Denis Jaquez Jr., who recently decommitted from Northwestern, Bailey said.

Syracuse still needs to fill several assistant coaching positions, including at offensive coordinator. That, Bailey says, likely means the Orange won’t add many players on that side of the ball until the hire is made.

Afterward, editor in chief Brad Bierman calls in to discuss Syracuse basketball’s tough loss to Georgetown, which dropped them to 5-5 on the season.

Transfer Safety Bralyn Oliver Officially Visited Syracuse (SI; McAllister)

Transfer safety Bralyn Oliver took an official visit to Syracuse over the weekend. Oliver is transferring from Louisville but committed to Oregon State in late November. That commitment is non-binding, and he was able to get a close look at the Orange. Oliver is close friends with Syracuse defensive lineman Jatius Geer, and has four years of eligibility remaining.

Oliver signed with Louisville as part of the Cardinals 2021 recruiting class. He picked Louisville over offers from Arkansas, Colorado, Duke, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Illinois, NC State, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas Tech, West Virginia and others. In fact, Oliver originally gave a verbal to Georgia in August of 2019. Three months later he elected to reopen his recruitment shortly after visiting Alabama. In April 2020, he committed to Louisville and signed with the Cardinals that December before enrolling early in January 2021.

In late August, before the 2021 season began, Oliver chose to enter the transfer portal.

"First off I would like to thank the most high for giving me this opportunity most people don't get," Oliver posted on Twitter. "Second I would like to thank everyone connected to The University of Louisville for love and for the great time and allowing me to be here. With that being said I will be entering my name into the transfer portal. Once again thank you University of Louisville for the amazing opportunity."

Utah football gets commitment from Syracuse tight end transfer Landon Morris (desertet.com; Coles)

In the span of two days, Utah football has added two transfer tight ends to its 2022 recruiting class.

After landing 6-foot-3, 273-pound tight end Logan Kendall from Idaho on Sunday, the Utes added a commitment from 6-foot-6, 230-pound Syracuse transfer Landon Morris on Monday.

— Landon Morris⁸¹ (@LandonMorris81) December 13, 2021
Morris, a freshman this season, was a 3-star high school recruit out of Indiana and chose Syracuse over offers from Michigan, UCF, Boston College and Iowa State.

In August, he told 247Sports that his “experience on campus didn’t align with the role that SU’s coaching staff outlined to him during his recruitment” — as a pass-first tight end.

“I don’t feel like I was being utilized the way I was being recruited,” Morris said. “I was told I was going to be used as a stretch tight end/receiver, but it just didn’t play out that way. The coaches had nothing but good intentions on their part, however it didn’t work out. I know the strong parts of my skill set and I know I can be a valuable piece to the right puzzle.”

Miami Hurricanes Introduce Mario Cristobal as Head Football Coach | Full Press Conference )fanaticsview.com; video)

Miami University introduced former Oregon head coach Mario Cristobal as their new head coach. Miami has gone through some difficult seasons as of late. They have only won 1 of their last 10 bowl games. Cristobal hopes to lead the team in a direction similar to when he played for the Hurricanes. The Hurricanes secured two national championships during his playing days. Cristobal shared his passion for Miami University and showed he is ready to challenge those around him to improve this program.

UVA introduces new head football coach Tony Elliott at press conference (wnct.com; video; Reese)

New UVA head football coach Tony Elliott was formally introduced on Monday in a press conference.

The 42-year-old former Clemson receiver was a two-time national championship-winning offensive coach at Clemson. He most recently served as associated head coach and offensive coordinator.

He takes over for Bronco Mendenhall, who stepped down this year after going 30-32 over six seasons with the Hoos. UVA finished the 2021 regular season at 6-6 (4-4 in ACC) and will play SMU on Dec. 29 in the Wasabi Fenway Bowl at Fenway Park.

Jordan Addison earns consensus All-American status (cardiachill.com; Wilson)

Pitt wide receiver Jordan Addison was named a first-team All-American by the Associated Press on Monday, after earning the same honor from the Walter Camp Football Foundation and the Football Writers Association of America. Sporting News and the American Football Coaches Association have yet to release their lists, but with three of the five outlets placing the receiver on their first teams, Addison has earned consensus All-American status.

Addison racked up 1,479 yards and 17 touchdowns on 93 receptions in 2021. He also tacked on 28 yards and another score on six rushing attempts and managed to amass 185 yards on 11 punt returns. The receiver’s 1,479 receiving yards this year were the second-most ever accrued by a Pitt receiver in a single season. Only Larry Fitzgerald posted a higher single-season total, with 1,672 in 2003.

The sophomore pass-catcher played a pivotal role in the Panthers' success this year, as his connection with Kenny Pickett was the difference between victory and defeat on a number of occasions. The most notable of those was Addison’s four-touchdown, 202-yard performance in Pitt’s 48-38 win over Virginia, which clinched the ACC Coastal. In that primetime matchup, Pitt held a narrow 41-38 lead late in the contest, but Addison caught a pass from Pickett and took it 62 yards to the end zone to put the game out of reach for Virginia. He also went back for that pass, as it was short, and turned a likely interception into a game-sealing touchdown.

Virginia Tech football: 3-star S Malcolm Jones decommits from Hokies (gobblercountry.com; Manning)

On Monday, the Virginia Tech Hokies lost their third commitment from the 2022 recruiting class when three-star safety Malcolm Jones announced his de-commitment via Twitter.

I would like to give a thank you to all the coaches at Virginia tech who believed in me as well as the community thank you for all the support the everyone showed but it was a very hard decision but I had decided to de-commit from the university of Virginia. tech.@RecruitGeorgia
— Malcolm Jones (@mapp_302) December 13, 2021
Jones is a 6-foot-1, 185-pound safety prospect from Lee County High School in Leesburg, Georgia. He initially committed to Virginia Tech on June 21 after visiting Blacksburg on an official June 19.

According to the 247Sports’ Crystal Ball, Michigan State is the expected landing spot for Jones.

This is a bummer. Forget Jones’ star ranking for a moment and remember at one time he wasn’t even ranked. He can play. He’s athletic and physical. He was one of my favorites of every Virginia Tech commitment the Hokies landed this cycle. If you watch Jones, he jumps out at you and plays in the talent-rich state of Georgia.

MBB Michigan/UNC1.108
PGA Hero World Chall.0.955
Saudi Arabia Gran Prix0.923
MBB FSU/Purdue0.863
MBB Louisville/Mich St0.806

COMMENTS:

It's impressive that the SEC Championship drew a bigger audience than the lower-tier NFL games, although the audience for the NFL game of the week (CBS National Game) was still about 6 million more. The Big Ten Championship is in the same ball park, and the Big XII wasn't far behind.
The ACC Football Championship, where the stakes were almost zero, only drew 2.661 million viewers. However, just to put things into perspective, that's still twice as many as watched the highest-rated men's college basketball game, Duke vs. Ohio State. In fact, only one other basketball game - Michigan vs. UNC - drew more than the PGA Hero World Challenge and the Saudi Arabia Gran Prix. These are basically "garbage sports events" beating out the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, with the exception of the top two games.

From the NCAA:

7 "other" college football bowl games you can't miss

Here are the two ACC bowls that made their list...

Cheez-It Bowl — No. 19 Clemson vs. Iowa State

(5:45 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29 on ESPN)
These teams started the year in the top 10, with Clemson expecting another run at a national title and Iowa State seemingly primed for the best season in school history.
Both struggled at times, but the Tigers are on a 7-1 stretch and trounced Wake Forest 48-27 just a few weeks ago. Clemson's defense will be a tough test for the veteran Cyclones. QB Brock Purdy has 2,984 passing yards and RB Breece Hall comes in with nearly 1,500 yards on the ground. Hall finished 10th in the Heisman voting this year.

Gator Bowl — No. 17 Wake Forest vs. No. 25 Texas A&M

(11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 31 on ESPN)
As Wake Forest's Twitter account pointed out, coach Dave Clawson is the only coach in DI history to lead four different programs to 10-win seasons. This Demon Deacons team started 8-0 and climbed into the top 10 before losing three of the last five. Defense was often optional, looking at the Army (70-56), North Carolina (58-55)...and most other games on the schedule.
Good luck guessing how Texas A&M will do. The team that lost to Arkansas and Mississippi State in consecutive games? Or the one that upset No. 1 Alabama the next week? The Aggies appeared to figure it out after that by winning four in a row, but then they lost two of the last three. Texas A&M will have to slow down Wake QB Sam Hartman (3,924 passing yards).

Nick Paro, the next Salina supervisor, would like the state to consider a traffic circle like this one in its plans for rebuilding I-81.

Free Thruway tolls, traffic circle, cash: New Salina supervisor wants state to pay for loss of I-81 (PS; $; Breidenbach)

Nick Paro is not yet sworn in as the next Salina supervisor. But he’s ready to lay out his longshot demands for New York to repay Syracuse’s northern neighbor for damages caused by the rebuilding of Interstate 81 through the city.

For starters, Paro wants the state to drop the tolls on the state Thruway through Onondaga County.

State and federal transportation officials have a $2 billion plan to remove the aging I-81 highway overpasses and bring traffic to street level in Syracuse. Drivers who don’t have business in the city would use Interstate 481 to continue around Syracuse and much of Salina. State officials have said the plan will have minimal impact on the town of Salina.

Still, generations of Salina town officials have fiercely fought that idea, fearing a loss of traffic would gut the town of people, businesses and property taxes. They’ve suggested a tunnel and a skyway and the status quo to keep high-speed traffic headed north, but they appear to be losing.

Paro, 30 and about to graduate law school, is ready to negotiate.

A free ride on I-90, the Thruway, through the northern suburbs would provide a fast route through the new I-481 outer ring to 7th North Street, Electronics Parkway and Liverpool, Paro says.

Next, Paro wants a traffic circle to clean up what he considers a mess of roads as drivers leave the city and head up the shore of Onondaga Lake. A roundabout at the bottom of the lake would connect Onondaga Parkway, Old Liverpool Road, Buckley Road and Park Street. It would meet the state’s mission for a new highway to connect neighborhoods and improve streetscapes, he said.

He said the circle would provide a more “aesthetically pleasing” welcome to the town of Salina as drivers leave the city.
