Welcome to National Signing Day (Early Football)!

One of the most exciting moments for a student-athlete is receiving a verbal scholarship offer. Years of hard work have led to this moment. However, nothing is official until you sign the National Letter of Intent (NLI.) Not every school uses the NLI—about 650 NCAA DI and DII schools. It’s not mandatory to sign, but every year more than 48,000 student-athletes do. The National Letter of Intent is not affiliated directly with the NCAA; it was created by the Collegiate Commissioners Association to protect both the college and student from either party backing out.

Syracuse football offers transfer Juwaun Price, New Mexico State's leading rusher this year (247sports.com; Bailey)

Syracuse football has offered New Mexico State running back transfer Juwaun Price, he announced on Tuesday. Orange running backs coach Mike Lynch extended the scholarship opportunity.

The 5-foot-10, 195-pound Price served as the Aggies lead back this fall, taking 135 carries for 691 yards and 10 touchdowns as a third-year redshirt freshman. He saved his best performance for last, logging 156 yards and four scores in the team's season finale versus UMass. Price added 26 receptions for 181 yards and contributed as a kick returner, bringing recording 20 attempts for 398 yards with a long of 58.

A Peoria, Ariz., native, Price didn't play in 2020 as the program saw its season canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. He appeared in four games as a true freshman in 2019, going through his first collegiate season alongside now Orange safety Jason Simmons Jr., who transferred from NMSU last cycle.

As a Class of 2019 prospect out of Peoria High School, Price also received offers from Idaho, Northern Arizona and Western New Mexico.

Syracuse currently has three running backs projected to the 2022 roster in record-setter Sean Tucker, true freshman Josh Hough and verbal commitment LeQuint Allen. Allen, who recently garnered Gatorade New Jersey Player of the Year honors, is expected to sign with the program this week.

Early National Signing Day: Live updates on SU football 2022 recruiting class (PS; Mink)

Syracuse football will sign its first set of recruits in the 2022 class on Wednesday as part of Early National Signing Day.

At least 10 players are expected to sign this week, filing their national letters of intent beginning Wednesday morning.

Dino Babers is scheduled to meet with media members at 1 p.m. to discuss the new players and other topics.

Note: Refresh this page throughout Early Signing Day to see the latest updates

Good morning and welcome to the home of syracuse.com’s live coverage of early Early Signing Day.

The Orange is expecting to sign committed and uncommitted prospects today.

Names to watch include Denis Jaquez, who intended to sign with Northwestern but decommitted following a visit to Syracuse over the weekend. Jaquez, a 6-foot-4, 238-pound defensive end from Richland, New Jersey, will be making his decision public around 8 a.m.

Syracuse is also in play for a pair of linebackers from Georgia: Kadin Bailey, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound linebacker from Jefferson High School, and Garrison Madden, of Dutchtown High School.

Two more Syracuse football players seek a transfer (PS; Mink)

Two more Syracuse football players are seeking a transfer.

Defensive backs Ben Labrosse and Chase Atkinson have submitted their names into the NCAA’s transfer portal.

Neither has been with the program for weeks.

Labrosse left the team in September, with Atkinson following suit shortly after. Labrosse opened the season as a starter in the secondary, while Atkinson was a reserve cornerback.

By entering the transfer portal, other coaches can now formally contact them for recruiting purposes.

More than 20 players have left the SU football program since August (15 transfers, six departing seniors) as SU’s dwindling roster has led coach Dino Babers to trumpet a proposal circling in the coaching community: Adjust the rules around the transfer portal.

Syracuse will begin to replenish its roster on Wednesday when high school senior can sign binding letters of intent. At least 10 players are expected to sign this week.

Syracuse Football’s National Signing Day Preview – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Bonaparte)

Tomorrow is National Signing Day, a big day for any collegiate program. 10 players have verbally committed to Syracuse football, all are expected to put pen to paper during the early period which starts tomorrow. Make sure you stay locked on all of our platforms tomorrow, we’ll have updates on Twitter as well as our website covering all of tomorrow’s expected signees.

As of this moment, all of SU’s signees are known, but anything can happen on National Signing Day so make sure to continue to check our coverage, we’ll let you know if anything crazy happens.

This recruiting class is looking rather bleak for SU. Babers has never been a top recruiter despite that being something he was marketed as coming in, though you have to give some credit for what he’s accomplished with a grand majority of 3-stars. This year is no different, Syracuse’s class is made up of 100% 3-stars.

COMMITTED:

RB – LeQuint Allen
ATH – Dom Foster

Penn State Football’s top transfer portal targets (victorybellings.com; Santa Maria)

3. Taj Harris – Wide Receiver/Syracuse

Harris is a New Jersey native and had interest from Penn State Football as a three star recruit coming out of high school, but ultimately was never offered by Franklin.

Harris is a six-foot-two, 180 pound wide receiver who was very productive in his four seasons with Syracuse, catching 151 passes for 2,028 yards and ten touchdowns.

He entered the transfer portal early this season and has had a ton of power five interest from the likes of Kentucky, Ole Miss and Louisville to name a few.

Wide receiver is not at the top of the list of needs for Penn State Football, however with the loss of Jahan Dotson to the NFL, it could not hurt to add a proven commodity who can stretch the field with his speed and also has some size at six-foot-two.

parker Washington and Keandre Lambert-Smith will be back in 2022, but the position could use a infusion of experience as behind those two, they are very young at wide receiver.

Each ACC football program's highest-ranked 2022 commit (usatodayhss.com; Calvaruso)

USA TODAY High School Sports unveiled its top 100 recruiting rankings for the class of 2022 in September. With the beginning of the early signing period now just two days away, it is time to take a deeper look at the crop of prospects ascending to the college ranks in the coming weeks months.

3-star Will Hardy flips to UNC; Tar Heels chip away during UVA coach change - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

Back in April, Bronco Mendenhall and Virginia secured a solid commitment from 3-star S/LB Will Hardy. However, eight months later and with Mendenhall’s decision to step down, Hardy flipped his commitment; he’s now a part of North Carolina’s 2022 recruiting class.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Hardy played his prep ball for Norcross (Ga.) Greater Atlanta Christian.

Initially, Hardy picked Virginia over a host of other programs, including Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh, Boston College and Coastal Carolina.

Hardy checks in as the No. 837 prospect in 247 Sports Composite Rankings.

With early signing period fast approaching, Hardy is the 17th commit in UNC’s 2022 class, which ranks No. 8 nationally, per 247 Sports. Hardy is one of two prospects in the class from the state of Georgia; 4-star cornerback Marcus Allen is the other.

Obviously, this is something that new Virginia head coach Tony Elliott must be prepared to handle. With the coaching change, rival programs will look to poach UVA commits.

Tashard Choice leaves Georgia Tech; Geoff Collins must replace top recruiter - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

After three seasons as Georgia Tech’s running backs coach, Tashard Choice will leave for a job at USC.

Stating the obvious: things are not going well for Geoff Collins and Georgia Tech football. Collins just finished his third season with the Yellow Jackets: 3-9 (2-6 ACC). To close the season, Georgia Tech got blasted by a combined 100 points in loses to Notre Dame and Georgia.

Then, two weeks ago, running back Jahmyr Gibbs, the team’s best player and the most notable recruit of the Collins era in Atlanta, entered the NCAA transfer portal. Choice was instrumental in Gibbs coming to Georgia Tech, in the first place.

Georgia Tech running backs coach Tashard Choice is leaving for USC, @TheAthletic has confirmed. Huge loss for Geoff Collins’ staff. @On3sports first
— Jeff Schultz (@JeffSchultzATL) December 12, 2021
During the early 2000s, Choice was a star running back (2005-07) at Georgia Tech — after he transferred in from Oklahoma. Choice ran for 1,300+ yards and 10+ touchdowns in back-to-back seasons, too: 2006 and 2007.

It can be argued that Choice was the top assistant on staff at Georgia Tech. As the Yellow Jackets turn the page to Year 4 of Collins, things are in a very precarious position. This is a job/program to monitor.

From the NCAA:

7 "other" college football bowl games you can't miss

Here are the two ACC bowls that made their list...

Cheez-It Bowl — No. 19 Clemson vs. Iowa State

(5:45 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29 on ESPN)
These teams started the year in the top 10, with Clemson expecting another run at a national title and Iowa State seemingly primed for the best season in school history.
Both struggled at times, but the Tigers are on a 7-1 stretch and trounced Wake Forest 48-27 just a few weeks ago. Clemson's defense will be a tough test for the veteran Cyclones. QB Brock Purdy has 2,984 passing yards and RB Breece Hall comes in with nearly 1,500 yards on the ground. Hall finished 10th in the Heisman voting this year.

Gator Bowl — No. 17 Wake Forest vs. No. 25 Texas A&M

(11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 31 on ESPN)
As Wake Forest's Twitter account pointed out, coach Dave Clawson is the only coach in DI history to lead four different programs to 10-win seasons. This Demon Deacons team started 8-0 and climbed into the top 10 before losing three of the last five. Defense was often optional, looking at the Army (70-56), North Carolina (58-55)...and most other games on the schedule.
Good luck guessing how Texas A&M will do. The team that lost to Arkansas and Mississippi State in consecutive games? Or the one that upset No. 1 Alabama the next week? The Aggies appeared to figure it out after that by winning four in a row, but then they lost two of the last three. Texas A&M will have to slow down Wake QB Sam Hartman (3,924 passing yards).
__________
OT (sort of), from Sports Business Journal's Sports Media:

Take them to the bank: My predictions for ’22

Big Ten signs deals with CBS and Fox.

Fox, which owns 51% of Big Ten Network, will step up to take a bigger package with that conference than it has had previously. CBS wants high-quality college football games for its Saturday afternoon window. Fox and CBS will have the first pick of games every other week starting in 2023, but Fox will carry the Michigan- Ohio State game every year. NBC and WarnerMedia will make big runs at the Big Ten, too.

SEC leaves CBS a year early.

After CBS signs its Big Ten deal, it will negotiate a deal that allows the SEC to move to ESPN a year early. CBS’s SEC deal runs through the 2023 season.

Disney will not spin off ESPN.

Speaking of deals that won’t happen in 2022 … It’s been well reported that Disney executives have looked into the possibility of spinning off ESPN. It won’t happen this year, but could be fodder for my predictions column in coming years.

The 12 bars of Christmas: CNY spots that put you in the holiday spirit just walking through the door (PS; $; Miller)

This is the time of year where we occasionally knock off early from work to gather at a nearby bar for a cup of holiday cheer and celebrate the Christmas season.

But after taking last year off because of the pandemic, we’re going to make up for lost time with a good old-fashioned bar crawl. And not just any pub crawl. Imagine going from bar to bar in a one-horse open sleigh. With jingle bells on!

We’ve picked 12 bars throughout Central New York that have reclaimed Christmas from the Covid grinch. These dozen businesses have decked their walls with boughs of holly, ribbons and LED lights. Some have gone out on a Christmas tree limb to prepare a festive cocktail list for us.

So put on your ugly sweater, draw candy canes to pick a designated driver and put together a killer Christmas music playlist that doesn’t include Mariah Carey.

When we’re done with this bender, you’ll have 12 fun places to visit with co-workers you haven’t seen since you started working from home.

Now, let’s be on our way, shall we?

Kitty Hoynes

The 12 Bars of Christmas

An Irish coffee from Kitty Hoyne's in Armory Square. (Charlie Miller | cmiller@syracuse.com)

Address: 301 W. Fayette St., Syracuse. (315) 424-1974
Hours: Tuesday-Saturday 11:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. Closed Sunday and Monday

Cheers! Is it possible the that first stop on such a trek could be the best? It sure seemed like it at the time. It’s hard to beat the Irish Coffee ($8) here, especially on a Saturday morning. They dissolve brown sugar with Tullamore Dew Irish whiskey, and they warm it up with Cafe Kubal dark-roast coffee. The bartender finishes it with a dollop of fresh unsweetened whipped cream.

The delicate breakfast drink easily bridged the gap into lunch. By then, the Syracuse Gaelic football team poured through the doors to start its own downtown pub crawl (photographed above). With that caffeine jolt, it’s time to move along.

Coleman’s

Address: 100 S. Lowell Ave., Syracuse.(315) 476-1933
Hours: Tuesday-Saturday 11:30 a.m. to 2 a.m.; Sunday noon to 2 a.m.

Cheers! The mood at Coleman’s during the Christmas holiday season is as lively as during the St. Patrick’s Day holiday season. Instead of green Coors Light below lit-up shamrocks, we’re drinking Great Lakes Brewing Company’s Christmas Ale ($6) below mistletoe and flashy garland. This seasonal brew will warm you up with its hints of ginger, cinnamon and sweet honey. Well, that and its 7.5% alcohol content.

Peter Coleman, the longtime proprietor, died in August. Many longtime regulars last week said they still feel his spirit when they walk through the front door and catch a glimpse of the mammoth Santa next to the stars.

On any given Friday and Saturday night after Thanksgiving, Peter would greet customers from his chair opposite the bar. He’d speak proudly of the time he and his employees spent hanging the lights and ribbons in every room of the pub. “We did this together,” he would say. “It’s a family event. From our family to yours.”
